More families now have a “home away from home” for support while their children are recovering in the hospital thanks to the hard work of so many. With the adding of 26 new guestrooms for a total of 38, there is no longer a waiting list for families needing to stay with us. In addition, the kitchen has doubled in size, the living room and dining room areas have been expanded, there are two more laundry rooms, a new computer lab, a new workout room, a new playroom and more! A Grand Opening celebration is planned for May 3rd through 5th with event details and official invitations to follow. Ronald McDonald House of Mobile truly is the “House that Love Built” and a lot of love went into building our expanded house. -Volunteers ranging from interior decorators, McDonald’s employees, students and lawyers worked together to make the rooms cozy… Amazing! -Many rooms have been furnished by donations from local furniture companies, individuals, and groups including: Bronstein’s, Interiors Now, LaPlace, La-Z-Boy, Standard Furniture, The Medical Alliance of Mobile, and the Pendleton family. …Amazing! -A new pla with a fa yroom for ou rc b the wall ulous mural p hildren ainted o s by a lo n c Spradli ng…Am al artist, Steph -Our family waiting list to stay at the House anie azing! disappeared overnight…Amazing! I am thrilled and honored to begin my journey as Executive Director Paul Giardina of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mobile. As a ten year veteran of non-profit organizations, I appreciate just how special an organization this is and how important our mission is to the families of hospitalized children in our area. It is an exciting time to be a part of our Ronald McDonald House as our expansion is now complete. Thank you to everyone who has made this growth possible. I hope each of you will be able to attend our Grand Opening celebration to share the joy of our increased capacity to help more families - that you made possible. As the new kid on the block, I have been so impressed by the supporters of our House. From the donors and volunteers to the Board of Directors and staff, everyone is focused on supporting our families as they focus on their children’s recovery. Ronald McDonald House of Mobile truly is the “House that Love Built” and I am privileged to be a part of its continued success. The Cowan Family Story.... Jadyn Brianna Cowan was born June 28, 2010 weighing 1lb 7oz and 14 weeks before her due date. I had developed HELLP Syndrome which is an extreme form of pre-eclampsyia and the only cure was to deliver the baby. My first concern of course was for my beautiful baby girl but, what I also struggled with was where I would stay while my baby was in the hospital and how in the world could we afford it. My husband found out about Ronald McDonald House and quickly put us on the waiting list. I can’t tell you what a relief it was to get a room. I don’t know if I would have been as strong mentally and emotionally if we had not gotten in. I truly believe that staying close to my child made a difference in her survival. It was really nice to be able to talk to people who could identify and be a friend when I was so far from home and felt as though my fragile world could crumble at any moment. The staff and my new friends made me a stronger person which allowed me to do more for Brianna. Ronald McDonald House helped take my mind off everything that could happen, and focus on what wonders were taking place with not just my child but her “friends” in the NICU. We brought Brianna home on October 17, 2010 after 118 days in the NICU. She is a beautiful, happy, thriving baby girl who now weighs more than 14 lbs. and is very outspoken. I truly believe the Ronald McDonald House is a blessing. It allowed me to be closer to my child, but also opened me up to a world of people and friends I could never replace. I am a stronger mother for my experiences and the people I met at Ronald McDonald House. Meet Our Staff!! Including a few new faces... Ronald McDonald House is no stranger to Brewton. Numerous families over the years have stayed with us and under the guidance of Marcia Degraaf at DW McMillan Hospital the city of Brewton holds the record for collecting the most tab tops for our House. The citizens of Brewton have collected well over 3,000,000 tab tops over the years and they are still going strong. We knew a fundraiser in Brewton would be successful but we underestimated the extent of its success. Under the awesome guidance of Margaret Ann Smith the McCheers committee was formed and the rest is shall we say, history. The decorations were wonderful transforming the beautiful Club into a cozy pub. Clifton Morrissette provided food that was simply delicious and the committee put together a silent auction that had something for everyone. We toast Margaret Ann and her “McCheers” committee for raising $27,000 for Ronald McDonald House of Mobile, with the first $25,000 going to name The Brewton Room in the expansion. Fundraising at Ronald McDonald House of Mobile has hit the road! We decided to try something new with our fundraising efforts and hosted 2 new events, both in cities an hour away from the House. February 11-13, 2011 Racquets for Ronald was held in Ocean Springs, MS. We thought this would be a little more challenging since we were crossing state lines but quickly found the opposite to be true. Racquets for Ronald turned into an extremely rewarding venture for all involved. Under the leadership of Ronald McDonald House Board Members, April Evans and Tracy Roth, this tennis tournament was a tremendous success. In the beginning we were told that if we could get 90 – 120 players our tournament would be considered a success. We had an overwhelming 176 players and 218 events! The three day tournament was the definition of fun! There was a player’s party Friday night complete with food, drinks, music and a silent auction! Saturday was packed with awesome tennis, more food, more drinks and a visit from Ronald himself. The finals were held on Sunday and believe it or not more Drinks and a little more food. Racquets for Ronald was a “Grand Slam” for the House raising $38,500 in its first year. The first $25,000 will go to the capital campaign to name a room in the expansion The Mississippi Gulf Coast Room in memory of Sophia Mohler. The remainder will go to the operating costs at the House. 2011 March Newsletter Draft 2.indd 4 3/14/2011 4:00:45 PM Miracles by the Bay Charity Golf Classic returns to The Marriott Sponsored by: Grand Hotel Resort & Spa!! When she heard about our expansion needing a special touch, she jumped in with two feet, creating a home-like feeling in each and every nook and cranny of our expansion and now vows to spruce up the “old” House. With the help of many extremely talented volunteers, she has helped create a comfortable homeaway-from-home for our families. (Dyann Munoz pictured seated in middle of first row.) SCHOOL University of South Alabama Students from the University of South Alabama School of Business, Josh Logan, Jodi Long, Rosalyn McBride (not pictured), and Nick Taylor did a wonderful class project for Ronald McDonald House. These students produced and starred in informational videos about house rules and check-out procedures for families so that they can watch them on DVD from the comfort of their rooms. Thank you to these students and their professor, Dr. Marjorie Icenogle for this much-needed project to help our families. BUSINESS Dollar General Dollar General has truly been a blessing to our House over the past couple of months. They had a toy drive in December that supplied stocking stuffers for the families. In January they collected pre-stuffed bags for the House that were filled with snacks, toiletries and paper products. The employees enjoyed this so much that they had another drive and collected more toys and Easter items for the House. Thank you Dollar General for being such a dear friend to Ronald McDonald House. 2011 March Newsletter Draft 2.indd 8 3/14/2011 4:01:09 PM bUnNy HoP Grab your basket and hop on over for one “egg-citing” afternoon.
