The Home with a Heart Keeping familes together when they need each other the most. . usly The Quarterly Newsletter for the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana Fall 2011 Friendships Help Children Cope Being a kid isn’t always easy. Nine-year-old Christiana Lykins knows that better than anyone. That’s because the Camby, Ind., girl has had to carry the stress and emotional pain of watching her newborn brother suffer breathing problems caused by a birth defect. “It’s my second time being a big sister, so I felt a little more prepared this time,” said Christiana, the oldest of three kids. But Christiana’s family wasn’t prepared for the news that her now four-month-old brother Andrew was born with Pierre Robin Sequence, a condition in which the lower jaw is either smaller in size or set back from the upper jaw, resulting in a displaced tongue that impedes breathing. Christiana’s family has stayed at the Ronald McDonald House for the past four months while Andrew recovers from corrective surgery. Instead of spending her days with friends, singing and dancing at recess and playing ‘American Idol’ on the playground, Christiana has had to make a new home-away-from-home at the House, with her other younger brother and mom. It was an unexpected stay, to be sure, but a welcome haven filled with friendly, caring and compassionate volunteers and families experiencing similar situations. With services offered 24 hours a day, the Ronald McDonald House aims to keep the spirits of siblings of ill or injured children high, because experts say healing happens faster when families are together and their burdens lighter. Christiana isn’t the only youngster at the House forced to grow up faster than a child is expected to. Families soon discover the House is a place where brothers and sisters can keep a sense of normalcy, knowing they are all in this together. There’s 10-year-old Faith Howard, who has been staying at the Ronald McDonald House for more than 10 months now. Faith’s sister Heaven has been in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Riley Hospital for Children, which means she and her family spend a lot of time at the hospital. “The thing I miss most about being home is not being updated on all the new shows on TV,” Faith said. “I also miss being able to play outside with my friends.” Because of sometimes unexpected surgeries and the resulting odd-hours of visitation schedules, time spent at the House is hardly consistent for each family. Families with kids like Faith and Christiana sometimes have to endure erratic sleep schedules. “Sometimes I don’t go to bed until two,” Christiana said. “Then we wake up at noon and I feed myself breakfast in the kitchen the next day.” Despite the differences in needs and schedules of siblings staying at the Ronald McDonald House, they all have at least two things in common: Each child needs their family to stay strong for their ill brother or sister -- and for themselves -- and each child will remember the Ronald McDonald House as their home-awayfrom-home in a time of need. Families soon discover the House is a place where brothers and sisters can keep a sense of normalcy, knowing they are all in this together. They can still play and laugh with other children in a loving and caring environment, which in turn sparks a sense of hope in the hearts of their parents and loved ones. From Left: Christiana and Faith enjoy spending time together playing games and hanging out. The two have become friends while their families stay at the House. 230895 NL.indd 1 And maybe, that means staying a kid just a little bit longer. 10/21/11 3:18 PM From the Executive Director Dear Friends, Once again we have zoomed through the year and it’s fall again! Personally, this is my favorite time of the year with the cool, crisp evenings and the beautiful colors. It is also the time of year when kids are back in school, participating in fall sports, and enjoying the fun activities the season brings. For most kids this is an exciting time full of all the anticipation and preparation that goes with it. But for a few children, they face a unique challenge - a serious illness. At the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana (RMHI), we help children and families whose lives have been turned upside down by a serious illness. Normal concerns of homework and what to wear to school are replaced with hope for a positive diagnosis and a chance to go home healthy. You can help keep families together during these challenging times by supporting RMHI through a cash donation. By giving to RMHI, you will be giving families a home-away-from-home close to their seriously ill children. That means children will spend less time alone in their hospital room and more time with the people they love the most. Please consider supporting our families in their greatest time of need by making a gift today. Thank you for your support and generosity! Warm Regards, Small Acts Can Have a BIG impact From collecting pop tabs to selling lemonade at a neighborhood garage sale, to making goodie bags and writing special notes to the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, we are blessed to have the support of many young people in our community who want to make a difference. Visit our website at www.rmh-indiana.org to find out more. Nicholas organized a bike ride in his neighborhood to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House. He came up with the idea, coordinated with other kids in his neighborhood and went door to door asking for donations. Olivia, pictured with her mom, Stacey, coordinated the donation of 50 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to the Ronald McDonald House at Riley and personally delivered them to the House. 2 230895 NL.indd 2 Students from Hebron National Junior Honor Society collected and dropped off more than 1 million pop tabs to the House. Then they returned later in the day to prepare dinner for our guest families. Bishop donated his birthday presents and gift cards from his eighth birthday party to the Ronald McDonald House. This was the second time that Bishop donated his gifts from his birthday party to a local charity. 10/21/11 3:18 PM Car Do B Kev Den Jill Ap Do Vir Joe Ro Lor Den Bar Ho Ch H Jud Jul Ste Joe Eve Lyn We Jas Ro Kat Nar Mi H Pau Tho Ali Phy IBT Jen S Jerr Kap E Sam Ro Lin Sha Dav C Kn Jus Tan Kar Kri A LaLaw 9 Tho Kar Sco Yui Suz Ru Bet Ch Peg Ro M Reb Deb Pat Jen Rev Har Haz Mi S Bra Ad Bar Sus Mo U Joh Ma Ter Lin Lin Phi Ali Co Ori C Gar Oli Dav Her Psi C Qu Do Riv Sus Nan Jan Rya She The Jay Sec JO U R N E Y S T O S P A I N An evening of fine Mediterranean wines, food, art, entertainment and silent auction. utt z, P es ho g cki on rr You are cordially invited to join us for "A Taste...Journeys to Spain", benefiting the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana, on the evening of November 4, 2011 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom.
