The Story of Our House Unfolds One Family at a Time
Red Shoe Shindig was a wonderful
T heevening
of great food, drinks, music
and raising more than $375,000 for
the House that Love Built! Arrowhead
Stadium’s North Club was colored crimson
at the event, hosted by CEO of Scout
Investments Andy Iseman and his wife,
Shelly.
Everyone in the room was touched with
the story of strength and courage from
the Jeng family. We had several families
present in the room and focused the
evening on the children and families we
serve, which climaxed with the Sponsor
a Family portion of the evening that
raised more than $90,000. Sponsor
a Family allowed guests to raise their
paddles in support of families served by
RMHC-KC from a range of $10,000 to
$100. This money goes directly toward
keeping families together.
With the help of Stricker’s Auction
Company and Nigro Brothers, the live
auction was an incredible success. To
top off the evening, guests got moving
in their red shoes to tunes from the KC
All-Stars.

for children. Camp ChiMer, in its 27th
year of existence, is designed with that
in mind: a place to allow children with
kidney disease the chance to experience
something many others their age take
for granted-going away to summer camp!
for the families staying at the Houses,
host fabulous events and volunteer in
the General Store. Red Shoe Society
is a great opportunity for members to
get connected with other philanthropic
professionals who are committed to
enhancing awareness throughout the
Kansas City community.
We had a fantastic event on July 18 at
the Dark Horse Distillery – thanks to
all who came. It was a great night of
fashion! Hosted by KC Live’s Michael
Mackie and Michelle Davidson, we were
thrilled to have special guests from
Sporting KC, Aurelin Collin, Kei Kamara
and Lawrence Olum, participate in the
night. Special thanks to Dark Horse
Distillery, Platinum Productions and
Elite Sounds Entertainment for making
our show such a great success!
Help us continue to grow this great
group by signing up or passing the word
along to friends or family who may be
interested. The money that you pay for
membership will go directly to help
families stay together and provide them
a home away from home when they are
facing their child’s medical crisis.
In partnership with Children’s Mercy
Hospital, RMHC-KC hosted camp for
the first time this year at Lake Doniphan,
a 100-acre privately owned facility
near Excelsior Springs, Mo. Forty-five
children, from Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska
and Kansas, participated in a variety
of on-site activities including arts and
crafts, leadership challenges, campfires,
sports, swimming and fishing. In addition,
campers were able to attend two very
special off-site activities – a dinner and
dance hosted by The Elms Hotel and
Spa and a baseball game at the T-Bones
stadium.
Staffed by physicians, nurses, dietitians,
social workers and a host of volunteers
all activities are medically-supervised
and dialysis treatments are provided
on-site. Campers form friendships and
share common bonds and experiences
with others who are “just like them,” all
while enjoying the therapeutic benefits
of the great outdoors.

Mission Minute
Onofre Quiñones Gonzales
Quiñones Gonzales family arrived
T hein Kansas
City on July 1, 2013 after
their 12-year-old son, Onofre, was
sent via helicopter to Children’s Mercy
Hospital. Onofre had been experiencing
symptoms of a “very strong cold” that
would not go away. After many trips to
the doctor in their rural community did
not improve his health or illicit answers
about his worsening condition, Onofre’s
parents sought medical care at the largest
hospital in their area of Southwest
Kansas. He was flown to Children’s
Mercy Hospital in Kansas City where he
remained hospitalized for nearly 2-anda-half months. His diagnosis: Ewing’s
Sarcoma cancer.
Due to both Houses being filled to
capacity, Onofre’s parents and 10-yearold brother had to wait for one week to
receive a room at a Ronald McDonald
House. Nearly 3 months later, staff met
Onofre for the first time and enjoyed
getting to know this young man as he
continued to receive outpatient care in
Kansas City. Onofre and his family left
our House last week to return to their
own home. He left this letter about his
experience at RMHC.

“My name Onofre Quiñones and I am 12
years old. I was recently diagnosed with
Ewing’s Sarcoma cancer. One day we
were given a room at the Ronald
McDonald House and everything was
different because my mom and my
brother could go to their room and rest
just like they would at home. I really like
that my family is able to be with me day
and night. My mom cooks for us very often
in the kitchen and now that I am finally
out of the hospital I am very happy
because I’m in this house that I consider
my home. I am receiving weekly Chemotherapy. Thank God I am feeling much
better.”

years. As long as there is a need
in our community, the strength,
stability and continuity of service
we provide must be maintained
for future generations.
The purpose of planned giving and
Tomorrow’s Hope Legacy Society is to
continue to strengthen the mission with
giving opportunities.
What is Planned Giving Anyway?
Planned giving is finding ways to make
charitable gifts now or after your lifetime
while enjoying financial benefits for yourself.
Planned gifts are sometimes
referred to as “stop-andthink” gifts because they
require some planning
and, often, help from your
professional advisors.
Unlike cash donations,
they are typically made
from assets in your estate
rather than from disposable
income, and come to fruition upon your
death.

A misconception is that planned giving
is only for the “wealthy.” The truth is,
even people of modest means can make
a difference through planned giving.

Thanks for Your Service
21-member Board of Directors meets nine times a year and provides
R MHC-KC’s
necessary oversight and decisions to steward our resources in order to fulfill our
mission. Besides the nine meetings conducted each year, all board members participate
on committees in the areas of resource development, programming, finance and
board development. Board members are eligible to serve up to 6 years and have the
opportunity to be voted in to serve as chair of the board or on the executive committee.
This year, Diane Gallagher will complete her term as board president and turn the
gavel over to Curtis Landherr. Over the past two years, Diane has led us through a
strategic planning process and the decision-making strategy to build a new 20-bedroom
Ronald McDonald House. Other board members completing their board terms in
December are Marsha Laner and Jon Lewis. We are grateful for their years of service
and look forward to their continued engagement with the charity.
Volunteer Corner
New Deck at Cherry Street
brought about an important
S eptember
milestone for Ronald McDonald
House Charities of Kansas City: our
Cherry Street House turned 25! After
a quarter of a century, The House that
Love Built was beginning to show its
age. One company stepped forth to lend
their expertise as well as some serious
volunteer power to replace the deck,
a large undertaking given its size and
second story location.
Spanning two full weekends, ten volunteers
from Synergy Construction arrived
ready to work. The old deck was torn
off and replaced with a long-lasting
composite material deck product. The
decking material was donated by Timber
Tech and the delivery of the lumber as
well as all of the hardware was donated
by McCray Lumber. This entire project,

What a fun couple of months we’ve had here
at the House. So many great volunteers and
friends have come by lately, I’m afraid my tail is
going to go flying right off my body!
Here’s the most exciting news: we’re going to
build a new House! One of my best friends,
Holly, even showed me the plans for the new
place. When I heard it will hold 20 new families,
I gave it my official paw of approval. What can
I say? I’m the Director of Love and Compassion,
and that’s a pretty powerful position. As long as I get to keep cuddling with
kids—and being paid in dog treats—I’m happy.
Well, back to work. I have some serious playing
to do. I’d love to see all of you great volunteers
soon—why not come by the House and cook a
meal for our families? I’ll even try out a bite or
two for you. That’s just the kind of nice dog I am.
