Dear Parents and Guardians,
It was a pleasure to host the visit of our incoming Head of Primary, Mr Marcus Sherwood, and his family over the past
few days. The Sherwoods enjoyed their time at the school and are greatly looking forward to arriving in August. Marcus
will be a vital addition to our senior leadership team and will work closely with Mr McNamara and Ms Taylor to further
improve standards across the DUCKS and Junior School sections of the College. He brings with him an impressive track
record of educational achievement from his current school in Malaysia and is already full of excellent ideas for Dulwich
College Seoul. His two daughters will join us in Year 3 and Year 5.
This week also saw the visit of our new Music Co-ordinator, Mr Russell Grant, who was accompanied by Shane O’Shea
who is now working to co-ordinate music performances across all of the Dulwich Colleges. We have an impressive array
of concerts planned for next year and the Music team will be planning these over the coming weekend.
The highlight of the past week was the Year 5 and Year 6 production of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. The children, staff and
parents worked so hard to deliver an enjoyable performance with around 20 different songs, as well as the dancing and

acting. The production was a great team effort, with the students also involved in designing the set and backdrop for
the performance. Many parents also worked extremely hard on making some wonderful costumes for the night,
so I would like to thank them once again, as well as the FoD for providing refreshments on the night. Finally, our
congratulations go to our musical director, Ms Barrie, and especially to Ms Chow, who directed the whole performance,
for making the evening such a great success.
Primary to Secondary Transition
As we approach the end of the school year, many of our students start preparing for their future life in a different part
of the college. This transition process is most important for our Year 6 students as they prepare to enter the Senior
School from next August. I therefore recommend that Year 6 parents attend the Junior-Senior School Transition
Meeting next Friday at 8.30am in the Multi-Purpose Room, which will seek to explain the different challenges and
requirements the Primary students will face as they graduate to Secondary School education. If any parents are unable
to make the meeting, the Year 6 class teachers will be happy to provide them with any key information about this
transition at a later date.
School Holiday
Please be reminded that the College will be closed on Thursday 6th June for the Memorial Day public holiday.
Finally, may I say how much the students and myself are looking forward to our Founder’s Day celebrations next
Saturday 8th June. The day is always such a wonderful family occasion and one that brings together our whole school
community. I do hope that everyone will be able to attend on the day at some point in the afternoon and enjoy the
wonderful performances, stalls, food and drink that will be on offer - I’ll see you all there next Saturday June 8th!
Yours faithfully,

Alice the Musical
Over the past few weeks, the Year 5 and Year 6 students have been walking through the corridors humming the tunes
from ‘Alice’; we have all had ‘Alice’ on the brain! The main characters have been working hard in their ECA not just to
deliver lines, but to transform themselves into actors and they truly rose to that challenge! The classes themselves did
an incredible job learning the lyrics to songs and performing the dances on stage. Each class took on the music and
choreography of 9 songs and, in the end, performed them beautifully! We are so proud of the hard work and
accomplishment of our students this week. Drama plays a very important role in education as it helps children develop
a great sense of confidence and allows for the practical application of many areas within our curriculum. It was a great
learning and bonding experience for all of Upper Key Stage 2, staff and students. Thank you to all those that contributed
to the successful show!

Dulwich College Seoul performed a musical of Alice in Wonderland on Wednesday this week. We did two performances
in one day! We practised a lot and completed many rehearsals to prepare for the show. The rehearsals were sometimes
challenging because the classes and actors had to know when, where and how they had to get on stage. Also, everyone
had to know what costumes they had to wear. For example, if you were a teardrop, you had to know whether you wore
a light blue, sky blue or dark blue costume. We also had to rehearse with backing tracks and no stage, which was
difficult because we did not know exactly where the stage was going to be. We only had black crosses to tell us where
the stage and the extension were going to be.
For the school performance, it was the first time we performed the musical in front of an audience. We did not have an
intermission between the two acts, which made it difficult because we had to set up the chairs and table so quickly and
everyone thought it was the end of the show. During the school performance, the audience did not laugh as much
because they did not understand the humour as much as older people would, but they still did laugh for Andrew Do’s
“Beautiful Soup” solo. We thought it was easier to perform in front of children because we know most of them and often
play with them.
The parent performance was way more nerve wracking! We knew that Mr Sherwood was in the audience and it was his
first time seeing a production at Dulwich College Seoul. We wanted to make a good first impression on him and his
family. We were really nervous while we were waiting to get on stage, but once we got on, it was just as we had
rehearsed. Everyone knew their lines, songs and dance moves. After all that hard work we had a successful evening.
Thank you to everyone who helped with the performance and gave us support during this thrilling rollercoaster ride!

The children in 5TC recorded their immediate impressions after the completion of the production. They selected one
extract from every child and organised their thoughts into a performance poem. This is their poem.

Our Time to Shine
I came to school with no worries
I could see the lights going off one by one
I can not even describe it in words
When I saw the mums and dads I was worried
It was our performance
But all those worries turned into confidence
I felt like I was a real actor
My head was filled with so many thoughts, but they flew away instantly
The words went wrong and the conversation didn’t make sense, but the music just played
At least the audience did not notice, or did they?
My heart pounded
It did not matter that I had almost no energy left; I was going to give it my all
I was amazed at the fact that I had made it to the end without making the same mistakes I had made before
Everybody helped
I was so happy that my mouth was smiling from ear to ear like a Cheshire cat
The whole experience was hard but it paid off on stage
Lead role? Does not matter
Minor role? Does not matter
No role?
Who cares!
All you have to do is make your audience happy.

On Friday 24th May, Class 3H presented an assembly about looking after your teeth and the consequences of it if you
did not. They told the story of a young girl, Chloe, whose love of all things sweet resulted in her getting toothache and a
visit to the amazing Dr. Floss. After having a filling, Chloe (Ellie Park) decided to look after her teeth more by brushing
them twice a day and having regular check-ups with the dentist.
Our intrepid explorers then took everyone inside the mouth to see what the different teeth did and the teeth performed
a ‘mouth machine ‘dance. Plaque paid a visit too but was successfully beaten by the fluoride in toothpaste.
Finally the teeth enjoyed a refreshing and relaxing mouthwash before singing ‘My Shiny Teeth’.
‘I felt quite nervous at the start but when we got further into the show I felt relaxed and enjoyed it when people
laughed at our assembly. I had two parts. I loved my part holding the chupchup lollipop and having to skip around with
Chloe.’ Caitlin Finucan
‘I felt nervous at first but I got used to being Chloe and became more confident. My favourite part was the drilling as I
liked to wobble!’ Ellie Park alias Chloe

Fire Service Visit Year 1 Students
A week last Tuesday, Year 1 children were fortunate to have a team of fire officers from Seocho Fire Station visit
Dulwich College Seoul to provide them with an invaluable experience. The fire officers were accompanied by a 14
metre length vehicle which was turned into a building and an ambulance.
After Ms Taylor welcomed the officers, the Year 1 children participated in the activities in small groups. Firstly, the
children were shown how to use a fire extinguisher and some children were invited to have a go. Then they dressed in
jackets and helmets and experienced what to do, and how to escape from a building in the event of a fire. Almost all the
children and staff practised using the tunnel slide from the top of a ‘building’ to reach safety. Afterwards, the students
had the opportunity to see inside an ambulance. It was a thoroughly enjoyable educational experience for all the
children and staff.
Year 1 would like to thank Mr Steve Kim for helping to organise the visit, and Ms Anna Lee and Ms Amy for acting as
interpreters during the session.
