Taking it personally… At Alliance we believe in people. Be it our customers that we build strong relationships with or our family of winemakers from all over the world that bring our portfolio to life. The wine trade is about people and we forget that at our peril. We are a local wine merchant selling to the local community. We are still based in Glasgow and have not forgotten our roots. Though we now sell far and wide we are still involved in local markets throughout the country, and also around the world. Being local isn’t necessarily about where you are from, but how you act and appreciating the people you meet. This is the reason why we set up our Green Principals program last year. We want to celebrate those producers who not only make great wine, but value their people and value the land that they work. So with all this talk of people, we would like to introduce our new producers and their wines for you to discover this year. There will be wines to excite and tempt you, and stories to educate and entertain you. There are also some honest insights from our buyers, the people who found these wines. If that is not enough, then head to our website where you can find full information on all of our wines. Just type in the product code of the wine to discover all you need to know. We think 2016 is going to be an exciting year and we look forward to sharing it with the people that matter: you. Fergal Tynan M.W. 3 People DIRECTORS SALES - LONDON BUYING Fergal Tynan M.W. A who’s who Our buyers and MWs are vital to what we do, but often act behind the scenes, away in foreign lands, discovering the next big thing and hunting down that elusive parcel. So here is a chance to get to know them a little better and see what makes them tick. Garech joined Alliance Wine in 2006, and with the vaulting ambition of a young Macbeth, he quickly rose through the ranks. As surely as cream, amongst other things, floats to the top, Garech recently became the “Brown Owl” of the buying team with responsibility for Italy, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Hungary and any other country in which he fancies a holiday. Fluent in Italian, Garech learned the canals of Venice. Despite the glamour of the job, and as many free Cornettos as he could eat, Garech knew that wine was his passion and on his return to the UK he dedicated himself to the wine trade. Garech’s talent for spotting a great wine at a great price is world renowned and frankly, we are lucky to have him. 6 Garech Byrne the lingo while working long hours as a gondolier on Liz joined Alliance Wine some 19 years ago at the tender age of 11. For the last 6 years or more she has been wandering the vineyards of France, USA, Chile and Argentina seeking out those amazing, food friendly wines that have come to be her signature. The “arguably-too-old-to-be ‘Enfant Terrible” of the buying team, Liz speaks fluent French and passable Spanish, allowing her to mingle with the locals virtually Liz Donnelly everywhere she goes. Sniffing out these vinous jewels is no easy task and Liz attributes her success to her very keen sense of smell: “From the minute I set foot in someone’s house I can tell if they keep a goldfish” boasts Liz, confidently and frequently. Pablo is about as Spanish as an 18-30 rep in Magaluf. However, he is a wee bit more classy, cultured and fun. For many, many years Pablo ran his own company, ‘Rhone to Rioja’ and it was sheer magnetism that drew him closer and closer to Alliance Wine until recently his Spanish portfolio and Paul, himself, Pablo’s passion for Spanish wine and food radiates from him and there is officially no one who knows more about Spain than ‘oor Pablo’. The new, exciting wines that Paul has brought to Alliance are a testament to his expertise and enthusiasm. Pablo dances Flamenco at the highest level, but sadly only takes to the stage biannually these days. Paul Shinnie merged with Alliance. 7 Since staggering over the Giant’s Causeway to the UK some 16 years ago, Fergal has been drinking his way to Fergal Tynan MW success! He is now also the captain of the ship at Alliance Wine. Underneath Fergal’s affable exterior lies a sharp business brain and the obsessive attention to detail that is necessary to keep Alliance sailing smoothly. Now based in the cool climate of Scotland, Fergal still likes to travel to warmer climes to ensure that he has his finger on the pulse of the wine producing world. “Gilo”, as he is affectionately known, loves his pig legs and you may have spotted him at the Alliance tastings merrily carving up the jamon. Underneath his serious, straight laced exterior, Giles is in the disco bars of Düsseldorf during Prowein. He claims to need just “fumfteen” minutes sleep after a marathon session to be back on top form for his next meeting. As our other resident M.W., Giles heads up our winemaking projects in Australia. Between his Antipodean travels and his two young daughters running rings round him, Giles doesn’t know if it’s New York or New Year most of the time, so he likes to go fishing for salmon and trout to get some peace and quiet. 8 Giles Cooke MW something of an animal - podium dancing till dawn We believe that the inescapable context for all decisions about wine production and selling wine has to be whether the activity is rational, fair & caring. Making the best wine possible with the least intervention is only the start, be that organic, biodynamic or natural. It is not only about the environment. It is about ensuring beneficial relationships for all involved, giving due consideration to people and working with an innate sense of integrity. Fundamentally the wine business is about people: we pride ourselves on working with producers and customers who really value their people. At Alliance, many of our producers share these values. We call them our Green Principals, working with us to build a Better World of Wine. all the information right at your fingertips! They have had a bumper year and we thought that we should highlight them here to give them the respect they deserve. Adegas Pazo do Mar, DO Monterrei, Spain Over 30 years the family’s hard work, while respecting age old Ribeiro winemaking traditions, but retaining a fresh spirit and vision have created delicately flavoured wines of unbeatable quality. A diverse mix of great regions and styles that should excite and surprise you. Quintas do Homem Vinho Verde, Portugal Domaine Loustale Jurancon, France Founded in 1949 at the foot of the Pyrenees, the winery has become, over time, a distinguished landmark in Béarn and asserts a responsible and forward thinking approach to viticulture. Their meticulous efforts, including harvesting by hand, shines through in the wine. A booming family business with two small vineyard areas focusing on local varietals aims to create wines that are full of vibrancy and life. Just what you want to start the evening. Venturini Baldini Emilia Romagna Italy Positioned on the foothills of Emilia, the farm has been certified organic since 1985. All harvesting is done by hand and collected in small baskets. It’s a great story to tell and when you try the wines you will want to tell it too. Albourne Estate Sussex, England This new boutique producer of exciting and distinctive single estate wines is located on the edge of the South Downs in Sussex. We are almost giddy to have these wines in our range as we think their potential is huge. Félicette Southern France 1963 witnessed France entering the feline space race via a cat named Félicette. Now immortalised on a wine that pays homage to those that think outside the box, Félicette is for all those who dream to be a little different. 10 Casa Marin San Antonio, Chile Casa Marin is a boutique, family run winery established in 2000, founded by the formidable María Luz Marín, who fought to create this innovative winery to express the land and its terroir. She has succeeded and her wines are now highly regarded throughout the world. Mora & Memo Sardinia This beautiful estate sits high in the hills in the South East of Sardinia just a few kilometres from the sea. Focusing on indigenous Sardinian varieties (Cannonau & Vermentino) they create elegant, vibrant mineral wines - very different from the rustic Sardinian norm! Famille Morin Languedoc, France The estate has existed since 1330. Originally owned by the Order of the Holy Spirit nowadays it is Caroline Morin, the dynamic young winemaker, who tries to express the fabulous terroir through wines of great finesse and minerality. Still a spiritual experience. The Drift Farm Overberg Highlands South Africa Driven by a desire to make truly individual wines, Bruce Jack has set out to assiduously craft them using only the grapes grown on the farm. He has ensured superb quality wines with exceptional character. Guillaume Gonnet Southern Rhône France Bodegas y Viñedos Tinedo La Mancha, Spain We are proud to have secured Guillaume’s range of wines which puts minimal intervention and organic principals at their heart. He has grand plans for the future and his current range stretches across the Southern Rhône including Cote de Rhone, Cairanne, Tavel, Lirac & Chateauneuf du Pape. Tinedo is the AlvarezArenas’ family estate in La Mancha. The family are now renovating the 19th century heart of the winery bringing it into the present day, creating wines with history, but a wonderful modern touch. Domaine Sainte Irénée Languedoc, France More than 2000 years ago vineyards were established by the Romans who had already guessed at the outstanding terroir of this area. Marquis de Roux realized this in 1942 when he bought the estate to revitalise the Domaine. 11 CHAMPAGNE & SPARKLING I used to advocate that there is so much more to sparkling wine than Champagne, now I seem to be arguing that there is more to sparkling wine than Prosecco. It’s true that this most democratic of sparkling wines is still going strong. Sales growth that a FTSE 100 company could only wish for, and without any loss of quality and flavour profile in the wines too (check out our selection from Mabis if you have any doubt). Yet there is so much more out there. Is there a ‘Cava Comeback’ about to happen? If you try Sumarroca’s Pinot Noir Rosé, you might have to agree. Argentina Domaine Baumard’s wonderful pair of Cremant de Loire wines confirms beyond doubt that there is life beyond Valdobbiadene. 3 So, I would say the future is bright and full of choice. But it is no longer just about the grape, like all great wine regions, it is now a question of defining the great “terroirs” and making wines that really express them. ARGENTINA Both Viña Cobos and Zuccardi are at the forefront of this movement and we are very proud to represent these wines. Sebastian Zuccardi is part of the “Now Generation” of young winemakers in Argentina, working tirelessly and with awe-inspiring passion to make wines that are truly 4 San Juan Córdoba It is a fantastic example of top winemakers and viticulturists Zuccardi working together to make ever better wines. All have their place and should be experienced, just don’t wear a cork hat if you want to fit in. AUSTRALIA Australia may be the largest wine importer to the UK, but look beyond that statistic and there are a myriad of sub-regions, unexpected varieties and great value wines to be had. From the iconic offerings of Domaine A and Thousand Candles to the fresh style of Thistledown in the Adelaide Hills and the quirkiness of Suckfizzle from Stella Bella, there is quality and difference to be experienced everywhere. The food culture is more vibrant and varied than ever, with Sydney now following Melbourne’s lead and the wines are there to match. This isn’t homogenous, this is hip, different and all the better for it. I wish it was closer for weekend visits. Exploring its differing terroirs and new coastal plantings, it is clear that they are offering truly cool wines – in every sense. CHILE Its most progressive wineries, like the boutique Casa Marin which is new to us this year, prove that Chile is capable of producing the very finest wines, with a real sense of place. At Alliance we want to shout about these attitudes and aspects and show you the exciting side of Chile. Our own production project, the Espinos y Cardos wines, have undergone a facelift to ensure that the packaging matches the quality of the wine. We are also very proud to introduce a new tier within that range: our single site Pinot Noir from Santa Macarena which is just 5 kilometres from the coast. Odfjell wines continue to deliver fantastic quality and their Carignan Orzada is an excellent example of the old vines that are so important to Chile’s wine heritage and future. Whichever way you turn in Chile there are wines that are truly world class. This windblown land of hot stones and deep valleys has Condrieu 1 Château Grillet RHÔNE always fascinated me. Its rich history, good food and modern ingenuity (have you seen the Millau Viaduct?) is only equalled by the sheer breadth and depth of the wine produced here. Our latest recruit is Guillaume Gonnet. St-Joseph NORTHERN RHÔNE A local who has also spent much of his youth globetrotting through international vineyards. During his travels he fell in love in Australia, but does have another love to match that of 2 Tain l’Hermitage Tournon Crozes-l’Hermitage his antipodean wife: Grenache. The couple have high hopes Cornas for this grape and if their current selection of Southern St-Péray Rhone stars are anything to go by, there will be a lot more Valence history to write! The point I am trying to flippantly make is that there is a lot more to NZ than Sauvignon Blanc. Not to dismiss this unique, world class variation on the white wonder grape, but there is more out there to discover. Take Mount Edward for example. Here Pinot Noir, amongst other things, is grown in the most marginal of climates, far south in Central Otago. It is most definitely done for love and is all the better for it. You have to be slightly mad to even consider growing grapes in this environment. For that reason alone you must explore their range, just to see what great wines can be nurtured with a bit of madness and a lot of proper kiwi stubbornness. Portugal is a country brimming over with rocks and stones. 1 Vinho Verde The distinctive character these soils can impart to the wines is indigenous grape varieties in the world, we have a country full of beguiling, sometimes charming, sometimes challenging wines. The producers we work with demonstrate this perfectly – Dao from Julia Kemper is all organic and fiercely individual. I didn’t realise you can age a mountain and certainly don’t know how to. Do you count its rings? What is clear is the quality of wine that is coming from South Africa. We are proud to have added The Drift Farm to our portfolio this year. This family farm owned by Bruce Jack, up in the Overberg Highlands, produces vegetables & fruit, as well as incredible cool climate wine. The ruggedness of Mount Hood, the orange scented air of Central Valley, the Monterey of Steinbeck are all as wondrous as any vinous experience you care to have. That is not to make light of Paul Hobbs’ reputation, who we are very proud to count as one of our producers and long standing friends. He is a shining light of how great Californian winemaking can be. Up and coming areas such as Paso Robles, where Eberle are based, highlight the opportunities on offer and that it is not only Oregon and Washington that deserve our attention from the new wave. Please ensure that you read and understand these Terms of Sale before you submit an order, because you will be bound by these Terms of Sale once a contract comes into existence between you and us (no previous written or oral agreements will apply to that contract). 1. PLACING YOUR ORDER 1.1 Making & accepting orders: You can place orders for wine by telephone, email, fax, via our website or directly with our sales representatives. Your order is deemed to be an offer by you to enter into a legally binding contract with us. We are free to accept or decline your offer at our absolute discretion. These Terms of Sale shall form a binding contract between you and us only when we either issue you with express written or verbal acceptance of your order or we deliver the wine (or make the wine available for collection, where applicable), whichever is the earlier, at which point a contract shall come into existence between you and us (our receipt of payment does not constitute our acceptance). Contracts can be concluded in the English language only. 1.2 Minimum order quantity: Unless otherwise expressly agreed by us, we will not accept orders for less than 3 cases containing 9 litres of wine in each case. Where we accept orders for less than this quantity, a delivery surcharge is payable by you, as detailed in clause 2.2. 4.3 Returning defective products: In the unlikely event that our wine does not conform to the quality standards above, is otherwise defective or is not what you ordered, please let us know promptly after delivery. If you notice a mistake made by us after you have received the wine, we would appreciate it if you would please notify us within 48 hours. You must make any rejected wine available for collection by our courier if we request and take reasonable care of it pending collection. We will promptly refund any payment made by you for defective or incorrect wine that we have supplied. If, however, you reject wine which is not defective or incorrect (and you are not otherwise entitled to cancel your order), we reserve the right to charge you the direct cost to us of collecting, testing, storing and redelivering the rejected wine. 4.4 Errors made by us: We try to ensure that our descriptions and prices are accurate. If, prior to delivery to you, we discover an error in relation to the wine you have ordered, we will contact you as soon as possible to give you the option of either confirming your order subject to correction of the error or cancelling your order (and receiving a full refund of any prepayments you have made). If we are not reasonably able to ascertain your preference, your order will be treated as cancelled. 4.5 Correcting your mistakes: If you want to correct any mistakes you made in your order, you must inform us by telephone or by email prior to both your order being accepted and the wine being delivered. If you inform us of your mistake after your order is accepted or after the wine is delivered, we may, at our sole discretion, agree to amend your order (but we reserve the right to charge you for recovering the wine from you and for delivery of its replacement to you, where applicable). 1.3 Availability of wine: All of the wine we offer is subject to availability from our suppliers. We will try to contact you promptly if we are unable to supply the wine that you have ordered and we will give you the option of either varying or cancelling your order. 5. LIABILITY DISCLAIMER 1.4 Age restriction: It is illegal for us to sell wine to anyone who is, or appears to be under the age of 18 years. By placing an order, you confirm that you are at least 18 years of age: we reserve the right to cancel the contract between you and us if we or our couriers are unsure of whether you are at least 18 years old. 5.1 Extent of this disclaimer: Nothing in these Terms of Sale shall in any way limit our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence; for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or for any other matter for which it would be illegal or unlawful for us to exclude or attempt to exclude our liability. 1.5 Cancellation: If you are a consumer, you can cancel your order for any reason up to 7 working days from the date of delivery of the wine, provided that all of the bottles are unopened and intact. We will refund the full price you have paid to us for that order within 30 days from the date of cancellation. Any wine delivered must be made available for our collection and we reserve the right to charge the cost to us of recovering the wine. If you are not a consumer, we might, at our sole discretion, still permit you to cancel your order if we decide that this will not adversely affect us: please contact us promptly if you wish to cancel. 5.2 Liability restriction: If you or we do not comply with these Terms of Sale, neither you nor we shall be responsible for any loss of income or revenue, loss of business, loss of anticipated savings, any waste of time nor other losses that the other suffers as a result which are not a foreseeable consequence of the failure to comply with these Terms of Sale. 2. PRICES AND PAYMENT 2.1 Our prices: The price payable by you for our wine will be, unless otherwise agreed in writing, the price set out in our price list published at the time the wine is ordered. We may alter our prices at any time prior to delivery to account for factors such as VAT, excise duty, market and currency fluctuations and in such cases we shall endeavour to contact you promptly and give you the option of either paying the revised price or cancelling your order. Our prices are quoted exclusive of Value Added Tax and VAT will be charged where applicable at the prevailing rate (unless exempt from VAT or in the case of a sale transaction under bond where zero vat rate applies). 2.2 Other charges: Duty and the cost of delivery to either mainland Great Britain or mainland Northern Ireland are included in the prices we quote, unless otherwise stated. If we accept an order from you for less than 3 cases of wine to be delivered to an address in mainland Great Britain or mainland Northern Ireland, an additional delivery surcharge of £9.00 plus VAT will be imposed. If you require delivery be made to a destination which is not in mainland Great Britain or mainland Northern Ireland, please contact our customer service department. 2.3 Currency: You must make payment to us in the same currency as the price quoted by us at the time you placed your order. We reserve the right to make any refunds in the currency you used to make payment to us. 2.4 Making payment: Unless otherwise agreed by us in writing, payment for all wine must be made in advance in cleared funds (without any deduction by way of set-off or counterclaim). We accept payment by all major credit cards except American Express. We also accept payment by cheque payable to “Alliance Wine Company Limited”, by Direct Debit or by bank transfer (our bank details are available on request). Payment can be made in cash directly to our local representatives: please don’t send cash by post. 2.5 Late payment: Where we agree that payment may be made in arrears but you fail to make the payment due to us in full by the due date for payment, we reserve the right to charge interest to you on the overdue amount at the rate of 4% per year above the base lending rate of the Bank of Scotland from time to time. This interest shall accrue on a daily basis from the due date until the date of actual payment of the overdue amount, whether before or after judgment. You must pay us interest together with the overdue amount. Without limiting any other remedies or rights that we may have, if you do not pay us on time, we may cancel or suspend any outstanding order until you have paid all outstanding amounts. We reserve the right to withdraw any credit facility provided and all monies will become due and payable with immediate effect. 2.6 Transfer of ownership: Ownership of the wine will only pass to you when we receive payment in full of all sums due for the wine, including delivery charges, where applicable. You may however resell the wine in the ordinary course of your business after we have delivered it to you (but you must not deal with the wine in any other way, nor may you permit any lien, charge or encumbrance to be created over the wine, until, in any such case, payment has been made to us in full). If you fail to make payment to us in full within 30 days of the due date for payment or if the contract between you and us is cancelled or otherwise terminated for any reason prior to payment being made to us, you agree that, without limiting any other remedies or rights that we may have, we (and our agents) shall be entitled to enter any premises where you store wine to ascertain whether any of the wine we own is stored there and to inspect, count and recover that wine. 2.7 Return of Goods: Return of goods is solely at company discretion and must be agreed prior to return. Any transportation cost for returned goods will be your responsibility unless otherwise agreed. 3. DELIVERY 3.1 Date for delivery: We will try to deliver the wine you have ordered promptly (or otherwise as agreed by our customer service department at the time you place your order): however, any delivery dates we provide are estimates only. If we cannot supply the wine you have ordered (where applicable, by making it available in accordance with any Incoterms we have used, as explained in clause 3.3) within 30 days of receiving your order (or by any alternative date we have agreed with you), we will contact you as soon as possible to give you the option of either accepting a later delivery date or cancelling your order. If we are not reasonably able to ascertain your preference, your order will be treated as cancelled. 3.2 Delivery location & risk: Unless otherwise stated by us, deliveries will only be made to addresses in mainland Great Britain or mainland Northern Ireland and all risks to the wine will be your responsibility from the time of delivery. This does not apply where we incorporate Incoterms, as explained below. 3.3 Our use of Incoterms: Where stated in our price list (or in contract terms agreed by us), our wine will be supplied: • • • • Ex-Works (also referred to by us as “Ex-Cellar” or “Ex-[name of cellar]”); Free On Board (also referred to by us as “FOB”); Free Carrier [place] (also referred to by us as “FCA”); or Cost, Insurance and Freight [named destination port] (also referred to by us as “CIF”). These expressions shall have the meaning given to them in the International Chamber of Commerce’s ‘International Commercial Terms’ / ‘Incoterms’ and, where these expressions are used by us, the applicable responsibilities set out in the most recent version of Incoterms in effect when ordering shall apply in addition to the provisions in these Terms of Sale (and in the event of any conflict, the provisions of Incoterms shall prevail). More information regarding Incoterms is available at http://www.iccwbo.org/incoterms. Failure to accept delivery: We may use an independent courier of our choice. If you fail to accept delivery of the wine you have ordered within 3 days of our first attempt to deliver the wine to the specified address, we may charge you for any consequential storage costs reasonably incurred by us (unless your failure is caused by events beyond your reasonable control) and we shall not be liable for late delivery. 4. The revised version will apply to orders placed after the revised version is published and, where required to enable us to comply with the law, to any orders you have already made which we have not yet fulfilled. 6.3 Unenforceable provisions: If any of the provisions in these Terms of Sale are held by any competent authority to be unlawful or unenforceable in whole or in part, the remainder of the provision in question and the remaining provisions of these Terms of Sale shall continue in full force and effect to the fullest extent possible. 6.4 Insolvent customers: We may at any time, by giving you notice in writing, immediately terminate any contract made with you if the applicable order was made on behalf of a company and: 6.4.1 that company passes a resolution that it be wound up or dissolved or it makes an arrangement with its creditors (other than, in each case, for the sole purpose of a scheme for a solvent amalgamation of that company with one or more other companies or the solvent reconstruction of that company); 6.4.2 the Court makes an administration order or winding up order in relation to that company; an administration, administrative receiver, receiver or manager is appointed by a creditor or by the Court in relation to that company; or possession is taken of any of the property of that company under the terms of a floating charge; or 6.4.3 any event analogous to the events described in clauses 6.4.1 or 6.4.2 above occurs in any jurisdiction in which the relevant party is incorporated or resident or does business. 6.5 Law and dispute forum: These Terms of Sale shall be governed by Scots law and you and we both agree to submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the Scottish courts. 7. Credit Accounts and use of personal data The following information is applicable if you apply for a credit account with us: 7.1 Information we use: If you apply for a credit account with us, we will search the records we hold and your records at credit reference agencies: they will give us shared credit information, fraud prevention information, and public information (such as details of English County Court Judgments, bankruptcies and information from the electoral register). If an application for a credit account is being made by or on behalf of a company, partnership, or other such entity, we may use credit reference agencies to check the details of the individuals who own and/ or control that business. You must ensure that they are all aware that their details may be used in this way. Please contact us if you want details of those credit reference agencies from which we obtain, and to which we pass, information about you. You have a legal right to these details. We may use credit scoring or other automated decision-making systems to assess your application. 7.2 Sharing information about you: We may share your information with credit reference agencies. This information remains on the agencies’ files for 6 years after our credit arrangement with you is terminated. Whether or not your application proceeds, the agencies will add to your record details of our searches and your application. This record (but not our name) will be seen by other organisations when you apply for credit in the future. A large number of applications within a short period of time could affect your ability to obtain credit. We will also add to your record with the agencies details of your business’ agreement with us, the payments your business makes under it, and any default or failure to keep to its terms. 7.3 Use of your credit reference information: The information held by the credit reference agencies we use will be disclosed to us and other organisations (in the UK and in other countries) to, for example prevent fraud and money laundering; trace your whereabouts; recover debts that you owe; manage credit accounts and other facilities; or to make decisions on credit, insurance and other facilities, about you, your financial associate(s), members of your household or your business. 7.4 Linked information: The information credit reference agencies give us about you may already be linked to information about someone else you have had a joint account or similar financial association with, including members of the same household. By submitting an application you confirm that their finances will not affect our decision. We may check this and may turn down the application if we find it is inaccurate. An ‘association’ between joint applicants (between you and your business partner, for example) will be created at credit reference agencies. This will link your financial records, each of which will be taken into account in all future applications by either or both of you. This will continue until one of you successfully applies to the agencies to have the association removed.
