The BDOC Christmas Party and Have a Go Day was held on Sunday November 30th. Club members and
their dogs were encouraged to try the various dog sports offered by the Club, and much fun was had by

Session 5 Agility Report
We have reached the end of another fun filled agility year. There have been many local
trials and some of our members have trialled interstate including at the Agility National
in Queensland.
We have held 2 intakes each including around 20 new starters to agility this year in
Session 1 and 5. Given that we have a very small number of agility instructors this has
been a big undertaking.
On October 18 the club held a fundraiser agility/jumping/games trial and income trial
was approximately $2080 which includes entries, raffle and kitchen. Thank you to Loris
and Lucy who are BDOC agility instructors and ANKC agility judges for judging, Charlie
for trial managing, Barbara for looking after the food side and Anne for looking after
the raffle. All the other donations to the raffle, stewarding, etc, helped make the day a
success so thank you to everyone who contributed.
At our October trial there was much fun and some new BDOC triallers entered for the
first time and had a great time. Strategic Pairs is one of the events which we all enjoyed.
We had a number of passes including the rookies who all enjoyed their first trialling
experience.
Agility participated in ‘Have-a-go day’ on November 30th and there were a number
of dogs of different shapes and sizes and their humans eager to try out our basic
introductory courses. We had a few people fill out their waiting list forms on the day. We
hope to see these club members at our next intake in 2015.
We welcome three new agility instructors to add to our small band of Pam McDougall,
Barbara Brown, Lucy Williams, Geoff Woodman, Julie Rebbeck, Di Adams, Jenny Drake,
Loris Cameron, myself. Congratulations to Sue Moore, Kate Johnson and Louise Cargill
for qualifying as instructors.
At the club award presentations on Sunday 30th November the following dogs
received title awards: Peter Wiggins and Milo, Sue Moore and Diamond, Melissa Tuite
and Pez, Scott Gledhill and Willow, Barbara Brown and Dazzle, and Geoff Woodman and

Agility finished the year with a Party night on Monday December 1st. Everyone involved
with agility classes or trialling was welcome to the party. Christmas dress-ups optional,
some nibbles and/or drinks to share and join in some agility fun. There was a tunnellers
game for all to participate in, including beginners. It is traditional we have a Kris Kringle
which can be for dogs or their humans. Lots of fun!
Over the holiday break we expect all our agility members to train. This can consist of
(for example) stay/waits; recalls; working dog on the flat on both sides; jumping and of
course continue weaving training.
Some of our contact equipment is to be rubberised on Sat 13 & Sun 14 December. This
is for safety reasons so that the dogs don’t slip when negotiating the contact obstacles.
A few agility folk have volunteered to help. Thank you to Barbara Brown and John
Williamson for organising this and for spending many hours rebuilding one of the
Aframes, seesaws and table. John with Barbara’s help replaced the old heavy tops with
lighter weight ones to make it easier to move this heavy equipment. The committee has
decided to close the grounds whilst we are doing this as drying takes time and we will
need to leave items outside overnight.
More rubberising will be planned for next year as it is
likely that under the next ANKC agility rule changes that
it will be mandatory for all contact equipment.
2015 classes resume on 2 & 4 February. For those already
in classes, you will receive the class lists much closer
to the time. The agility session calendar is on the shed
notice board and in the clubhouse on the agility board.
Any members who are interested in participating in the
fast and exciting sport of agility, please fill in the form at
the office. Dogs need to be at least 10 months of age to
sign up for agility.

Call for Recipes!
Do you have a secret family recipe that you are willing to unveil? Do you make your
own dog treats? If so, what’s your dog’s favourite recipe?
As a fundraising effort, BDOC would like to put together a recipe book for humans
and our hairy four-legged kids. If you would like to submit a recipe, please send
them to martymustang@iinet.net.au by 31st March 2015 for inclusion in the
book.
Recipes should be an original creation. If they are not, please include the reference
from which the recipe was sourced.

belconnen dog obedience club 9 Dances with Dogs Mock Competition
Belconnen Dog Obedience Club and Companion Dog Club held a mock Dances with Dogs
competition on Sunday 2 November 2014. This was to assist in Judges training for aspiring ACT DWD
Judges Jane Richardson, Cheryl Neal, Niccola Hardaker, Angela Hagedorn, Linda Harper and Bruce
Chapman, but it was also a useful exercise in learning to run a DWD competition!
The competition began with four Freestyle Starters routines, three of whom had never performed
before. Raelene Stewart with French Bulldog Paris (Frogwyck Bella Paris) performed a stunning routine
to I feel like a woman by Shania Twain. We were then dazzled with two very different performances to
Robbie William’s Puttin on the Ritz. First was Gabby Luksza with Shetland Sheep Dog, Amber
(Hortonpark Chasing Dreams), followed by Jody Asquith with Jack Russell Terrier, Flynn.
Heather Swinbourn completed the starters round with miniature poodle Charlie (Elire Nevada Kid)
performing an entertaining routine to the Charlie Chaplin Walk by Sounds of the Circus.
Next up, and last of our freestylers, was our first ‘Judge’ (three of us also provided a performance). Jane
Richardson and the delightful Miss Jazz reinvigorated their Novice-passing routine, Good Morning
Starshine, by Oliver.

belconnen dog obedience club 10 We then moved into Heelwork to Music with our second not-so-often-seen breed in the competition,
a Lagotto Romagnolo, Obi (Incavale Obsession) performing a catchy number with mum, Melinda Ford,
to Star Wars Cantina Band by John Williams and the Boston Pops. Another first time performance!
Judging aspirant Niccola Hardaker followed with her Welsh Cardigan Corgi Zimri (CH Llandwyn
Crescent Moon (AI) to Can’t Fight the Moonlight by LeAnn Rimes.
At Intermediate level, we had a taste of country with Gabrielle Meyer and her cavoodle Charlie
performing to I Like It, I Love It by Tim McGraw.
And I closed the day with my Border Collie Rosie (Arajoel Zara) performing Advanced HTM to A-Tisket
A-Tasket by The Manhattan Transfer.
The aspirant Judges scores were collated and provided, along with videos of all the performances, to
National DWD President, Barb Murfett. We were pleased to see that we were all in the same ballpark
and had picked up on, and considered, the same issues. All the competitors passed the mock
competition bar one, but we know that team will be back stronger next time and the routine structure
was really strong and entertaining.
We ended the day by handing out several Judges Awards with every competitor receiving an award
and a great prize donated by our Judges and also by Lisa Hilliard from Polite Paws. This included Most
Creative Routine, Happiest Team, Best Costume, Best Storytelling, Most Promise, Most Innovative
Move and The Dog That Had Really Good Time!
Our venue was a wonderful indoor facility on the southside of Canberra (about 20 minutes drive from
any part of Canberra!), a multi-use sporting facility and indoor archery centre over 40m long and 30m
wide with non-slip flooring and great lighting. Easy access to the out door areas, lots of dog walking
space and parking right out the front.

belconnen dog obedience club 11 While we shared with the table tennis club down the other end, I don’t think a single dog even lifted
an ear to the sound of ‘ping’ or ‘pong’. And the TT club lent us their fantastic dividers!
A big thank you to Ann Shannon for providing heaps of information that we were able to use in
setting up our own documentation. We even have the start of a Guide to hosting DWD competitions!

The week after our mock DWD competition two BDOC teams headed to Sydney to compete in the
final Dogs NSW competition for the year.
The Saturday 8 November double am/pm competition was held in the Amenities Building at Erskine
Park, and was judged by Andrea Yerbury, Judy Turley and Tony Turner.
« Gabe Meyer and Charlie (CD RE, HTM.N, DWDF.N, Cavoodle) gained their INTERMEDIATE
HEELWORK TO MUSIC TITLE with two (uncontested) first place qualifying scores. Charlie
performed to I like it, I love it, by Tim McGraw. Gabe says that she and Charlie will now be having
a break from DWD after a challenging time working through Charlie’s ‘shut downs’. She is
looking forward to retirement next year and who knows what the future beyond that holds.
The Hagedorn conglomerate had four entrants, two in Freestyle Starters, one in HTM Novice and one
in HTM Advanced; needless to say it was a full on day with many quick costume changes!
I also had the wonderful experience of car camping – sleeping in the back of my SUV – for the first
time with all four dogs. Unfortunately Jazzy decided to be on guard duty until 1am, albeit very quietly
glaring out the windows. However, one still wakes up when a German Shepherd sits on them several
times!
« Heather (Eweturn Highland Fling AD JD, Border Collie) gained a qualifier and her FREESTYLE
STARTERS TITLE in the morning (146.5, 3rd place) and an extra pass in the afternoon (143.5, 1st
place). Heather performed to Spanish Lady by Celtic Woman.
« Jazzmine (Titoki Jazz at Nite, German Shepherd) gained a further qualifier in the morning
(136.5) performing to Beside the Seaside, but the late night and heat caught up to her in the
afternoon and we withdrew shortly into the routine.

(uncontested) first place HTM Intermediate passes (156.5 & 151) in Hernandos Hideaway by
Doris Day.
« Rosie (Arajoel Zara CCD. RN. HTM.I. DWDF.N., Border Collie) also gained two qualifiers (158.5 &
155), and second places, in Advanced HTM with A-Tisket A-Tasket by The Manhattan Transfer.
Everyone enjoyed the day, which was low key and relaxing (for those with less than four dogs at least).
AND BIG NEWS!!!!
Canberra will have its first DWD comp on Saturday 21 March 2015!!!! This will be a double
(am and pm) competition featuring two Judges from Queensland and one from NSW
as well as shadow Judging from the six ACT aspirant Judges.

belconnen dog obedience club 14 Fundraising for BDOC - PartyLite Candles
BDOC hosted a PartyLite candle party on Friday 12th September 2014 and while attendance was low,
those that did attend came to the party with outside orders from friends, family or colleagues. All up, the
club sold over $2000 of candles and candle accessories which gave the club over $960 in credit (including
party host bonuses which vary each month) to spend on goods to include in club raffles – and all just for
hosting a party. This was an awesome fundraising effort and has assisted the club enormously.
PartyLite has a wide range of scents; however a popular one in the BDOC community is the Pet Perfect
odour neutralising range. Perfect for dog owners for eliminating pet smells through neutralisation rather
than just covering up the smells like a number of other products. The odour neutralising range is available

Do you and your buddy participate in a
dog sport? Maybe flyball? Agility? Doggy
dancing? Or even just enjoy a good long
walk together? Well dogs can get stiff
muscles after exercise, just like humans.
Do you like to give your dogs a rub down
after exercise but don’t really know what
you are doing? Do you want to make sure
that your massage techniques are helpful
not harmful?
If you answered yes to any of these
questions… then this course is for you!
On 2nd and 3rd August 2014, the
Belconnen Flyball Bullets hosted Dr
Sandi Rogers from the National College
of Traditional Medicine in Victoria to
run a two day workshop in Canine
Myofunctional Therapy (aka therapeutic
dog massage).
Over the course of two days, participants
learnt observational skills in identifying
functional restrictions in their own dog,
as well as gained hand-on experience
in how to release tension and stretch
muscles to improve functional movement
by the use of massage techniques. There
was a significant change in many of the
dog’s movements after
Sandi’s techniques
were implemented by
the owner.
So does it really work?
Sandi’s teachings, techniques and tips are
the Belconnen bullets secret weapon in
their flyball competitions. All attendees
have noticed considerable improvement
in their dog’s movement and techniques
in their sport as well as improved running
times in flyball. Those who attended
the course found it invaluable and as an
added bonus, have further enhanced the
special bond between dog and owner.

We are also seeking expressions of interest in the National College of Traditional Medicines one-day
Canine nutrition course, for peak performance in your dog. If you are interested in this course, please

Kinya (OC Kingsway Double Jeopardy UD AD JDX RA)
Kinya was picked up from the south of Canberra over 15 years ago. I can still hear her
screeching and crying from the crate in the back of the car. I didn’t know how long
and nerve-wracking a drive across Canberra could be! When I arrived home my sweet
little cocker spaniel puppy was wet with tears and as miserable as a puppy could be;
however, the silky terrier, Harriet, soon licked her face dry and gave her a conducted
tour of the yard. It wasn’t long before she was bouncing around happily again.
Kinya soon outgrew Harriet, but there was no doubt who the boss was: when Harriet
said ‘jump’ Kinya jumped. Still, Harriet was a patient and lively ‘mother’ so there was
plenty of romping and exploring to be done together as well as the manners to be
learnt.
I discovered on the second day she was with me that she had great natural retrieving
instincts. Not only did she run after the ball I had rolled across the floor but she picked
it up and brought it back. Retrieving became the best game in her life. It was so easy
to exercise her in a limited amount of time and reward her for good work and she
would quiver in anticipation when I reached into my bumbag for her ball. She also
had a penchant for my thick explorer socks which she would ‘liberate’ from the dirty
clothes basket to take to her bed to keep her company during the long hours I was at
work. (What Harriet thought of having their shared favourite spot by the front window
decorated with smelly socks I don’t know!) When it came time to do the washing
I would send Kinya around the house to retrieve the socks she had gathered until
everything was paired up – she so enjoyed that game. It did mean that my socks were
extra thick with cocker hair, but what are a few extra hairs between friends?
Her natural retrieving ability stood her in good stead when I trained her for obedience
competition. She excelled in retrieving her dumbbell and her gloves and in adding
in the scenting element for scent discrim and seek back in both UD and UDX. I also
did some basic marked retrieves for gundog work with her, where again her inbred
instincts came to the fore.
I competed with her in obedience and agility and when rally obedience started I
brought her out of retirement to compete in that too. She certainly showed the true
cocker temperament as she worked – I received many compliments on her bustling,
merry attitude in the ring. Her accomplishments were many – she graces the clubhouse
wall and the trophies and ribbons in my cabinet attest to her
abilities. What I miss most, though, is watching her sheer delight
and enthusiasm with her nose down and her tail (well her whole
backside really) wagging furiously as she followed the mysterious
trails on her walks and the time at the
end of the day when she would sit
beside me on the couch just to keep
me company.
