Deep South All Breed Obedience Training Club Newsletter Message From Our President John Long Our Next Scheduled Meeting Date: October 11, 2010 Time: 7:30 PM Location: Johnny Bright Playground 3401 Cleary Avenue, Metairie, Louisiana The November meeting is tentatively set/ scheduled for November 8, 2010. October, November and December will be busy months for our club. An important event will take place in each Weather and Class Information Hotline Sunday, November 14 will be Pet Fest in Lafreniere Park. Deep South has been very active in Pet Fest almost from its inception and this year is no exception. The Drill Team will perform and we will have other demonstrations and games during the day. We want to interact with the public in most of our activities so we will try to design them so that the average dog owner can take part. We are also planning to sponsor Therapy Dog International Certification at Pet Fest so we will need lots of help with this event. This is a lot fun for dogs and people alike and everyone has a great time. Get in touch with Marlane Mayo if you would like to help out. We will set up on Saturday afternoon and take down Sunday evening, these are the times when the work is most physical and we need more able bodied help. Please come out and give us a hand, you will have a good time. October 16 &17 will be our Obedience and Rally Trials in Mandeville, La. in The Castine Center at Pelican Park. Debbie Boyd is trial Chairman and Secretary and she is looking for lots of help with the trial. Even if you have never been to a trial before the work is not that difficult and we give on the job training. We especially need help early Saturday morning with setting up and on Sunday afternoon with breaking everything down and putting it away. The park is only 5 or 6 miles from the North end of the causeway so it isn't that far. Please come out and help your club, it will be a rewarding experience. The Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter and the Jefferson SPCA held a pet adoption weekend on Saturday, September 18, 2010 and Sunday, September 19, 2010 at the Royal Palms Center Shopping Center at 1901 Manhattan Boulevard in Harvey, Louisiana. The adoption event times were from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day. There was a good turnout of DSABOTC members to work each day, and we worked along with other volunteers and students working for community service credits from Ursuline Academy. Provisions for the day in terms of canopies, drinks, pizzas, and water were provided by Jefferson Feed, Pet and Garden Center. Everyone who worked this event had a great time, and helped get a total of 14 dogs adopted for the weekend. No cats were brought for this adoption weekend, as we were located out in the parking lot/grass area. Six dogs were adopted out on Saturday, and eight dogs were adopted out on Sunday. The flow of potential adopters was moderate both days, but we were pleased with the results for the weekend. A special thanks goes out to Lynn Morvant of Jefferson Feed, Pet and Garden Center for the provisions; and thanks to all of the DSABOTC members who participated and made a difference this weekend. On page 4 are photos taken at the adoption event. (cont. next column) Page 3 In the left column are pictures from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter West Jefferson Pet Adoption Weekend, held at the Royal Palms Center Shopping Center on Manhattan Boulevard in Harvey, Louisiana on September 18 and 19, 2010. Several Deep South members participated in this event and had a good time making a difference for 14 dogs, who are now in loving homes. Thank you members for caring!! Attention!! Important Information!! Membership Chairperson Jody Legendre wants to notify the membership that hardcopy Membership Lists are available for distribution. You may pick one up at Training Class on Tuesday night or at our regular monthly club meeting. Contact Jody at (504) 7383831 to request a copy to pickup. Help the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter The Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter (hereafter JPAS) has some urgent needs for supplies; to include food, blankets and towels, toys for puppies, and either money donations for medications or donated medications. DSABOTC President John Long has approved a program to collect items and cash for the JPAS on a regular basis. We will be collecting at our monthly club meetings and at our regular Tuesday Night Training Classes; followed by the physical delivery to the JPAS several times per month. The shelter is in need of blankets, towels, washcloths, Science Diet dry and canned dog food, toys for puppies, and money for medications. I have been appointed as the club liaison to the JPAS, and will keep in touch with them on their needs. Please donate to help the dogs in the shelter. Thank you. Edwin M. Mayo, Jr. Editor On the Web http://www.deepsouthobedience.com/ Mailing Address Deep South All Breed Obedience Training Club, Inc. P.O. Box 277 Kenner, Louisiana 70063-0277 Paw Prints Newsletter Editor Send all submissions to the following email address: deepsoutheditor@yahoo.com Page 4 ADDITIONAL CLASSES FOR ADDITIONAL DOGS By Jody Legendre (504) 738-3831 At the September 13, 2010, meeting, the Club voted to reinstate an old policy which gives more structure as to how members can enroll additional dogs (still at no additional cost) that they own into classes after they have completed classes with their first dog. The “Membership Agreement” form is also used for a “Class Reservation” form. So a form must be completed for each new dog going into a class for the first time. You can obtain this form from on our website, www.deepsouthobedience.com and click on “Application”, or get a copy from me. Give the completed form plus proof of current shots (Rabies, Parvo, & Distemper) to me for your class assignment. Please indicate if any of your membership information is new: i.e., address, phone numbers, e-mail, etc. Your dog cannot be assigned to the appropriate class until I have these documents. Several members have told me they would like to be in the next Beginner’s Obedience class (probably October, 2010). Those of you that have told me this need to get these forms to me, as this policy is in effect now. Also, and I am very sorry to say, my memory is not so good, and I may have already forgotten you. Now the responsibility is yours for your dogs to get into classes. Please get these papers to me at class on Tuesdays, or mail them to me (sorry, no faxes). As always, if you have any questions you are welcome to call me at home or see me at class. More and more of you members are taking advantage of the club’s benefits, and I will truly appreciate your cooperation with this policy. Now, don’t forget to come out to our club functions and give a helping hand if you possibly can. We always need lots of hands. We do “on the job training” and you will enjoy the activities, plus seeing our dogs in action. It all goes into what makes this a really great club, but you’ll never know what you are missing if you never participate! The more of us there are, the easier it is to have these events.
