The Arts Fund: all things art “All Things Art”- This year’s Arts Fund theme speaks to the reality that arts surround us, are part of us, and we couldn’t survive without them. You don’t think that’s true? Think for a moment. When you woke up this morning, you opened your eyes to your painted bedroom adorned with art, which someone in your home chose with artistic decisions. If the arts weren’t important to us all smart phones would come in one color, cars would all look the same, and music, fashion, and movie industries would not exist. People create because we have to- it’s as important to our being as eating and breathing. Because the Allied Arts Council understands the importance of a vibrant arts community, it has conducted an annual Arts Fund campaign since 1982. This year’s funded agencies, Allied Arts Council, Creative Arts Productions, Midwest Artist Association, Performing Arts Association, RiverSong, St. Joseph Community Chorus, and Saint Joseph Symphony, need your help in raising $213,000. Art is not just drawings, dance and the “pretty things.” Science, history, and communication all use art. The way a poem flows, the design of an app, they are all full of art. “In my own philanthropy and business endeavors, I have seen the critical role that the arts play in stimulating creativity and in developing vital communities… the arts have a crucial impact on our economy and are an important catalyst for learning, discovery, and achievement in our country,” Paul G. Allen, co-founder, Microsoft. The arts foster positive mental health and provide an outlet for self-expression. “Arts education aids students in skills needed in the workplace: flexibility, the ability to solve problems and communicate, the ability to learn new skills, to be creative and innovative, and to strive for excellence,” Joseph M. Calahan, Xerox Corporation. The arts not only help educate and stimulate creativity with the children in our community, they also stimulate our economy. “Performing Arts Association brings national and international touring artists to the Missouri Theatre. Over the course of our season, we bring in several thousand residents from within and outside the community to the theatre. Those who travel to the city to see a performance will eat at the various restaurants and shop at local retail stores, bringing solid economic growth to St. Joseph,” said Beth Sharp, Performing Arts Association Director. Every contribution no matter how big or how small impacts the funded agencies. A $20 donation provides an Artists in the Schools presentation in our community. A $30 donation allows ten children in our community to have their first symphonic experience. A donation of $125 provides one scholarship to the Creative Arts Productions’ summer theater camp. There are many ways to support the Arts Fund. Brett and Missy’s lives revolve around their two young children, Brodie, 4 ½, and Allie, 21 months. “We want our children to understand the value of All Things Art. We want our children exposed to the benefits the arts provide: self-confidence, social interaction and creativity,” said Missy Lackey. Both Brett and Missy are excited about chairing this year’s campaign. “There are so many well deserving places where people can donate their money. Educating the community about what the arts bring in will definitely be fun,” said Brett Lackey. “When we moved to St. Joseph three years ago, we were surprised to see how vibrant the arts were in the community.
