In Saturday’s Miami Independent Schools event, the junior from Ransom Everglades swam in four of the eight events won by the host Raiders on their way to a fifth consecutive team title. Ransom Everglades finished with 160 points to easily outdistance runner-up Westminster Christian (69 points) and third-place finisher Carrollton (29). The Raiders also captured the boys’ division, earning 107 points. Miami Country Day was second with 87, followed by Mater Academy (70) Burgos, who finished third in the Class 1A meet last year in the 50-freestyle, is aiming to win that event, as well as the 100 freestyle, in this year’s state meet. ‘‘I think I’m right on track,’’ she said. ‘‘I’ve been training really, really hard. But I also think this year’s team is stronger.’’ BY ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ a1fernandez@MiamiHerald.com The focal point of Northwestern’s offense this season was supposed to be running back Antwain Easterling. The highly-recruited senior hasn’t disappointed so far. But it’s likely Northwestern wouldn’t be winning with ease without an unknown burgeoning star quarterback Jacory Harris. Harris, a 6-3, 175-pound junior, threw three touchdown passes that helped Northwestern rout Columbus 42-0 on Saturday night at Traz Powell Stadium. The Bulls (6-0), the top-ranked team in the state in Class 6A and The Miami Herald’s South Florida Top 20 poll, routed another MiamiDade County power behind another effective performance. The Explorers (4-2), ranked 14th in The Herald’s Top 20 poll, were held to 82 total yards, and quarterback Chris Masson was sacked three times and intercepted once. Easterling, Miami-Dade County’s leading rusher entering the weekend, ran for 132 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns. But it was Harris’ accuracy that neutralized Columbus. ‘‘My receivers got open and the lineman gave me time to throw,’’ Harris said. ‘‘A lot of times I feel like I have all day to throw and it’s because of our offensive line.’’ Harris completed 15 of 17 passes for 245 yards. He connected on his first 11 throws. His first incompletion came in the second quarter when receiver Aldarius Johnson caught a pass in the back of the end zone, but he couldn’t keep either foot in bounds. ‘‘His actions speak for themselves,’’ Northwestern BARBARA P. FERNANDEZ/FOR THE MIAMI HERALD OUT OF THE WAY: Northwestern’s Aidarius Johnson avoids would-be Columbus tacklers for extra yardage. coach Roland Smith said. ‘‘He’s the one who makes our offense go. People stack the box and try to take away [Easterling]. But when you play us you better defend across the board because we don’t have just one guy on offense.’’ Harris was the Bulls’ backup quarterback last season during Northwestern’s run to the Class 6A state semifinals after starring for a year as a quarterback at Northwest Boys Club Optimist. Before that, Harris said he had never played the position. Harris completed passes to six receivers Saturday. Johnson caught the most with four receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson was also the recipient of Harris’ most impressive throw, which came in the third quarter when he zipped the ball into triple coverage to Johnson, who jumped caught it and ran 73 yards for a touchdown. Southwest 25-16, 25-9: Winning the tournament wasn’t the only thing special for Florida Christian’s Sam Seco. Despite leading her team to the victory, Seco was more excited looking in the stands than she was playing on the court. ‘‘My brother was in a serious motor cycle accident, and he just got out of the hospital after three months,’’ said Seco, the tournament’s MVP. ‘‘He came to watch and that motivated me.’’ Also motivated was Stephanie Rodriguez, who stepped up in the first game and made five consecutive service points to give the Patriots a quick 5-2 lead. But after pulling ahead 14-6, the team struggled after Southwest (10-10) called a time out and came back to cut the lead to 20-16. But five consecutive points by Jessica Melendez and a game-winning kill by Seco sealed the win. In the second game Rodriguez put the match away early by scoring 10 of the first 11 points on serves for the Patriots (15-1). •All-Tournament Team: Heather Byrd, Hollywood Christian; Diana Rojas, Lourdes; Audrey Brogles, Pines Charter; Juliett Melo; Coral Reef; •Boys’ results – Ransom Everglades 107, Miami Country Day 87, Mater Academy 70, Westminster 43: 200 medley relay: Mater Academy •North Miami 20, Braddock 13: Pleading for his players to step up and become leaders, Pioneers coach Leonard Graham got just that as his team rallied to score 24 fourth-quarter points, putting away the Bulldogs at North Miami Stadium. Coming out of half time scoreless, North Miami’s do-it-all quarterback Junior Mertile fielded the opening kickoff at the 1-yard line and advanced to the 10-yard line before fumbling and Braddock took possession. Then Braddock senior running back Jermaine Marcellus took an end around 10 yards into the end zone, putting the Bulldogs ahead 7-0 with 11:41 left to play in the third quarter. With North Miami failing to convert on a 4thand-1 at the 6-yard line, it forced Braddock to march the length of the field. After an 11-play drive, North Miami came up with a big stop of its own, stopping Braddock on a 4th-and-5 play. Pioneers senior tail back Warren Wilson, who had just 17 yards rushing in the first half, took the first snap of the fourth quarter 40 yards for a touchdown. After a three-and-out by Braddock, Mertile led North Miami down field, capping a quick three play drive, hitting Mike Jean-Louis on a 10-yard slant for the 14-7 go ahead score. Warren added his second touchdown of the game after Braddock quarterback Anthony Semino fumbled the snap on the Bulldogs’ 14-yard line with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
