As citizen scholars, students and adults, we contribute to the continual improvement of the school and the community at large. Hillside Children’s Center is our lead agency partner at School #8. The Student and Family Support Center at Roberto Clemente School 8 has a wide range of programs/services to support students and their families. The following agencies/programs are represented: Hillside CC: Individual/group counseling and case management services Primary Project: Early intervention services The Eastman Dental Smile Mobile The Children’s Institute:- PATHS Curriculum and Coping Power groups YMCA : Afterschool Program Center for Youth: Individual/family counseling Center for Youth: Alternative to Suspension staffing Center for Youth: Prevention education groups “Funding provided by NYS Department of Education’s Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention Grant” 2 31 Student & Family Support Center Mission and Vision Statement The School 8 Student & Family Support Center’s mission is to support students who have barriers to success in the areas of academics, behavior, or social skill development. Support staff at School 8 and in the Student and Family Support Center provide individual counseling, case management, parent outreach, and therapeutic groups to assist students and their families. Staff in the School 8 Student and Family Support Center work closely with teachers and school staff to define areas of concern and develop a plan for identified students. Goals are set for students and these goals are reached by increasing support to students and their families, identifying and treating mental health issues, and helping students to develop effective problem-solving and conflict management skills. We have a unique collaboration between school staff and community service providers through our Student and Family Support Center. Through our SFSC, a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, we work together to meet the social and emotional needs of our student population and to help students reach their academic and personal goals. In the following pages you will have an opportunity to get acquainted with several of the staff, service providers and programs available to students and their families at School 8. School Secretary lynann.gouveia@rcsdk12.org Ext. 1190 Mrs. Gouveia is the head secretary at School 8. She coordinates and supervises all of the secretarial and main office functioning of the school. Mrs. Gouveia also provides support to the administration and the school community. Laura Stam Office Clerk laura.stam@rcsdk12.org Ext. 1191 Mrs. Stam assists with all aspects of the main office functions at School 8, including transportation, special education records, attendance and information verification. In addition to regular physical education classes our three PE teachers assist with coaching. 28 School Principal mark.mathews@rcsdk12.org Ext. 2101 Mark Mathews is the Principal of Roberto Clemente School 8. Mr. Mathews believes in creating a stable and consistent school atmosphere that is built on the foundation of a strong academic environment. He works to ensure that every student has an opportunity to be involved in something at school, from student government, to athletics and academic clubs. These opportunities help to develop a sense of pride in being a School 8 student. 5 Art Assistant Principals Peter Veitch Corynn O’Connor Our art teachers offer fun and creative forms of self expression for all students at School 8. Shawn Walker Assistant Principal Grades PreK-2 shawn.walker@rcsdk12.org Ext. 2153 Shawn Walker is the Assistant Principal of grades PreK-2 at School 8. Ms. Walker works closely with teachers to improve student academic achievement and conduct. Ms. Walker also works closely with the parents of her students and can be contacted about any concerns or issues that parents have about their students in grades PreK–2. 6 Music Nancy Belec Mrs. Belec teaches general music to all students in grades K-8 and runs the School 8 choir. 27 Health Office Assistant Principals Donna Fritz Mindy Carde School Nurses Ext. 1053 donna.fritz@rcsdk12.org mindy.carde@rcsdk12.org Rm. 105 Ms. Fritz and Ms. Carde are responsible for monitoring the health needs of students at School 8. They provide daily triage, give first aid, and administer medication as prescribed. They also conduct screening for various health needs, provide consultation about health issues, refer students for medical followup or special services and maintain updated health records. In addition, our nurses develop individual health care plans for students with special health needs. 26 Shanta Rutland Assistant Principal Grades 3-5 chanta.rutland@rcsdk12.org Ext. 1180 Chanta Rutland is the Assistant Principal of grades 3-5. Dr. Rutland understands the importance of helping parents become more involved in their child’s learning, and she works hard to keep students on track. 7 Assistant Principals Teacher Coordinator of Special Education (TCOSE) Kevin Hayes TCOSE kevin.hayes@rcsdk12.org Ext. 3133 Mr. Hayes coordinates special education services at School 8. He helps to manage the Committee on Special Education process and services. Christine Caluorie-Sickles Assistant Principal Grades 6-8 christine.sickles@rcsdk12.org Ext. 3123 Christine Caluorie-Sickles is the Assistant Principal of grades 6-8 and is also involved in many school-wide initiatives. She can be contacted about any concerns related to academic achievement, social-emotional development and overall classroom and school-wide conduct. 8 Occupational Therapy Wendy Irwin Occupational Therapist wendy.irwin@rcsdk12.org Ext. 2220 School-based occupational therapy is designed to enhance the student’s ability to fully access and be successful in the learning environment. Wendy Irwin, occupational therapist of School 8, helps students to work on areas of fine motor and visual motor skills, visual perceptual skills and sensory processing. 25 Alternative to Suspension Program Primary Teachers: General Education Lawrence Hammond Classroom Teacher larry.hammond@rcsdk12.org Ext. 1340 J. Shapira Pre-K Mr. Hammond is a NYS Certified teacher who is responsible for ensuring that every student maintains their educational requirements while attending the ATS program. Mr. Hammond receives lesson plans from teachers of students in the suspension room and makes sure that they receive proper instruction and support in order to help them make a successful transition back to their classrooms. Ben Kadar Social Learning Specialist Center for Youth bkadar@centerforyouth.net Ext. 1340 Mr. Kadar acts as a liaison between students, their teachers, and their parents. He works with students who are assigned to the ATS room on activities that help foster effective social skills, coping skills, and problem-solving skills that will enable them to make positive choices on a daily basis. 24 A. Morales 7th/8th Grade Center for Youth The Center for Youth provides our Student and Family Support Center with a Youth and Family Therapist who provides individual child and family therapy sessions. Sessions focus on a comprehensive assessment of needs and cultivating the strengths of the individual and family through engaging sessions utilizing techniques such as play and art therapy. YMCA staff emphasizes caring, respect, honesty, responsibility, fun and friendship among individuals. The YMCA hopes to create a sense of community by involving individuals and families of all ages. 19 Primary Project Student & Family Support Center Christina Molinero Child Associate christina.molinero@rcsdk12.org Ext. 2333 Ms. Molinero works with children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade to help them get a positive start in school. Primary Project focuses on helping children gain self-confidence, develop social skills, and learn to solve problems effectively, which helps them to become more successful learners and students. Parent Liaison Sara Eck SFSC Coordinator sara.eck@rcsdk12.org Ext. 3211 Sara Eck is the RCSD liaison to the School 8 Student and Family Support Center. Sara works closely with students in the older grades and provides crisis intervention and linkages to community resources. Sara maintains data on student referrals and provider involvement. She acts as a liaison between the school and the community and encourages parental involvement and participation at school to ensure the success of all children who attend School 8. 18 Mrs. Zeeman-Golden’s role in the SFSC is to be responsible for the planning, day-to day operation, management and coordination of agencies’ services. She takes the lead on communication with other community agencies who are providing services onsite. She is responsible for overall program effectiveness and agency accountability. Judy handles the processing of referrals and ensures that agency providers are responsive to the needs of students/families and the school. 15 Social Worker Gloria Johnson-Hovey School Social Worker gloria.johnson-hovey@rcsdk12.org Ext. 1051 Ms. Hovey works with students on various goals including improving social skills, developing coping strategies, and learning effective decision-making skills. Ms. Hovey acts as a liaison between home, school, and the community. She conducts psychosocial assessments, facilitates individual and group counseling sessions, assists with crisis intervention and makes referrals to community agencies as needed. Speech & Language Mrs. Caputo-Schwarz and Mrs. Upright are responsible for evaluating students who are referred for speech/language concerns. They also work with students in small groups and individually to improve their language skills in many areas. Ms. McCortney is involved with the creation and implementation of behavioral plans and the CSE process.
