If US drops Iran deal, dollar could
suffer: Kerry
If the United States cancels the Iran nuclear deal, as some members of Congress
urge, the blow to its credibility may be
such as to hasten the end of the dollar’s
reign as the world’s reserve currency,
Secretary of State John Kerry warned

Humaidan explained that
the total number of employed
during the second quarter of
the year had reached 6,706
people monthly with an
average of 2,235 citizens,
compared with an average
of 2,317 citizens in the first
quarter of 2015.
The month of April
gave the best performance
during the second quarter
of 2015, where the number
of employed people reached
2,395
compared
with
2,211 citizens in June, this
in addition to employed
females at the end of each of
the first and second quarter
of 2015 which remained at
34pc, one of the highest rates
achieved.
He added that in the first
half of this year, the results
indicated an increase in
the number of both sexes
employed by 9pc between
December 2014 and June
2015.
The Minister also stated that
there was a gradual decline in
the number of unemployed
during the second quarter
of the said three months.
While the number was 6617
a citizen in April 2015, fell
to 6561 citizens in May, and
then to 6051 citizens in June,
compared with 6943 citizens
in March.
It’s a decline of 13pc
between the months of March
2015 and June 2015, and by
18pc between December 2014
and June 2015. It is a sign that
reflects the positive results of
the recruitment and training
efforts undertaken by the
Ministry in cooperation with
various institutions involved
in the public and private
sectors.
The labour market’s
decline in unemployment saw
a number of 4735 vacant job
posts in April to 5269 posts
in June 2015. The number
of vacancies in June saw an
increase of 11pc than in April
2015 and the percentage
increase of 13pc from the
number at the end of the first
quarter of this year (March
2015).
As for the available
vacancies at the end of
this quarter (June 2015),
the vacancies for females,
declined from 23pc in April
to 19pc in June (from 1068
to 1016 vacant posts). The
total gender ratio was 45pc,
in which males accounted
for 36pc, which means that
64pc of the vacancies are for
females.

Hackers made millions
Washington
An international hacking ring armed with tens
of thousands of corporate
secrets pocketed more than
$100 million from illicit
trades, targeting a core vulnerability of the financial
system in one of the digital
age’s most sprawling insider-trading schemes, federal
investigators said Tuesday.
Since 2010, more than 30
hackers and traders across
the U.S., the Ukraine, Russia
and other countries coordinated to steal and profit
from more than 150,000
press releases, which were
scheduled to be delivered to
investors from corporate wire
services Business Wire, PR

With advance details on
financial performance and
corporate mergers the team

CHINESE BIZMAN TAKES
BAHRAIN ROUTE TO THE US

Bahrain is a better place to invest than Dubai, says Liu Jiahui
Muhammad Azam/DTNN
Manama
C
hinese businessman Liu
Jiahui, who is on a fiveday business tour to Bahrain,
is enamoured with the business
milieu in Bahrain. “Bahrain is
a better place to invest than
Dubai,” he feels.
Liu had come to Bahrain to
explore business opportunities,
with a special focus on
establishing an export business
from Bahrain to the US, owing
to its Free Trade Agreement.
He had gone to Dubai also
and received many invitations
from there. But after comparing
both the places, he was
convinced that Bahrain was a
better place to do business.
According to him, Dubai
is far expensive than Bahrain.
“Dubai has made its name
only because of its business
propaganda the world over.
Meanwhile, Bahrain offers
many big facilities to the
foreign investors,” he said, and
added that he liked the way
foreign investors are treated
here.
Liu, who owns two big
factories of ceramics and
garments in China, said: “I will
come back again in October
with some proposal of a viable
export to the US.”
He said that he wanted
to make Bahrain the centre
of his business in the whole
Gulf region. Liu had planned
to send his son, who had just
finished his high school, to the
USA for learning English. But
now he has changed his mind.
“I will bring him here with
me where he can learn English
from the British Council.”
Abdul Karim Al Fulaij, who
helped Liu visit the industrial
area of Bahrain and understand
the Bahraini market, said that
Liu was a very big businessman
in China and he knew him for
the last 15 years.

He has two factories there –
in Foshan and Ghanzhon. “He
has full support in Guangdong
Chamber of Commerce. He is
willing to do a joint venture
because of the Free Trade
Agreement with the US,”
Fulaij said, and added that Liu
wanted to bring aluminium
tiles here, quite famous for the
decoration of houses.

THE FUN DAYS OF SUMMER!

earning is not always
boring. It can be fun
too. Over 1500 students are
participating in Bahrain’s
largest summer camp to learn
new exciting arts and sciences.
Youth City 2030, which is in
its sixth edition, has attracted
hundreds of students from age
9 to 25.
Various arts and sciences
are being taught at the camp
by experienced teachers.
The classes include painting,
leadership, public relations,
cooking, fashion designing,
technology, writing, video
production and photography.
The camp, which will end on
August 28, is organised under
four sections; Art, Science,
Leadership and Media.
“The turnout has been great.
The students are impressed that
we have over 100 programmes
and they pick according to
what they like. Currently we are
having elections for heads of
L

each section. The heads will be
given various responsibilities of
functions of the meeting. This
will teach them responsibility
of being leaders as well as give
them the experience of earning
the right to lead their team,” an
organiser said.
An instructor at the camp,
Mahmoud Badour, said he
was teaching the students
leadership.
“This is a great opportunity
to teach the students leadership
as they are away from their
academic
responsibilities.
We are teaching the students
the basics of leadership and
teamwork. We have many
activities including games.
They are also asked to give
speeches in front of a group,”
he said.
He said that many kids
joined because of the pressure
from their parents.
“But now they are enjoying
themselves. We give individual
attention to each student and
work on their strengths and
weaknesses,” he added.
Another unique aspect of
Youth City 2030 is the large
number of students who are
volunteering to make the event
a success. More than a hundred
students have volunteered to
help organize the event.
Participants engaging in various activities
What the volunteers have to say
“This has already been
an enriching experience.
I chose to come and volunteer here because I
wanted to be active during the summer vacations. If I did not take
part here, I would probably be at home playing
video games or wasting time in other activities.
So I am glad I am here. Here I am helping in the
overall event organisation. It has taught me
many lessons and has given me good experience.”
“It was a little bit hard
at first to organise the
children and to direct
them and to get them
to follow instructions.
But later, it got much
easier. This is the fist
time I am working with
children and I find this a
wonderful experience.
The children are beautiful and sweet and I loved
working here.”
“I work in the art section
where we teach the students colouring, painting and handicrafts. For
older students we teach
courses such as Arabic
calligraphy, oil painting, mosaic as well. We
have highly qualified
teachers who do the
advanced teaching. I teach children in the lower
levels. I also help in organising the whole event,
which has been a great experience for me.”

Investing in the Power
of Young People
T
oday, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund,
commemorates International Youth Day, under the theme,
“Youth Civic Engagement,” by celebrating the actions young
people around the world take to improve their well-being and that
of their communities.
In 65 countries, more than half the population is younger than 24.
Denying these young people the right to meaningful participation
in decision-making is a gross violation of their human rights and a
failure of the democratic process. It is also a waste of human capital
that can propel nations towards development.
Young people are driving change towards a better future for
all in every corner of the world. They are leading global action on
climate change, campaigning to end discrimination, speaking out
to uphold democracy and the freedom of speech, connecting our
world with innovations in information technology, and building
peace in societies ravaged by war.
In a world of increasing conflict, young people must be our
strongest partners if peace and security are to win out over war.
We need their fullest capability and broadest engagement for
people, the planet and prosperity to flourish.
The next 15 years offer a unique opportunity for a demographic
dividend that will accelerate conflict-recovery and sustainable
economic growth and development in many countries if we empower,
support, educate and create employment for young people today.
Young women and men need protection from violence, and they
have a right to access essential education and health services, including
for their reproductive health. They also have the right to be at the
tables where decisions and peace are made.
Yet, for the most part, young people remain excluded from
decision-making processes. Although 16 per cent of the world’s
population is 20-29 years old, this age group represents only 1.6 per
cent of parliamentarians, most of whom are men. Young people rarely
join political parties, and the majority do not vote in elections.
It is misleading, however, to conclude that young people are
uninterested or simply do not care. Today’s young people are
better educated and volunteer more for causes than previous
generations. They are also a key driving force behind making
companies, organizations and governments more socially and
environmentally conscious.
To fully participate in the lives of their communities, young
people need to overcome multiple legal, social and cultural barriers
and discrimination. Adolescent girls, in particular, are often
burdened by child marriage, violence, unplanned pregnancies and
HIV, preventing their full civic engagement.
In September, world leaders will formally adopt Transforming
Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a
historic, transformative, inclusive, universal agenda for our people
and the planet. To have any chance of succeeding in building
a better future for humanity, we must remove the obstacles
confronted by young people and invest in their health, wellbeing, education and livelihoods to unleash and leverage their
full potential as global citizens. We must ensure that all young
people have access to reproductive health and rights, including
comprehensive health education.
UNFPA is proud to work with networks of adolescents and youth
to mobilize support for the United Nations Secretary-General’s
Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health.
Our efforts to promote youth leadership and participation
enable young people to develop the skills, knowledge and support
needed to make informed decisions about their bodies, lives,
families, communities, countries and the world.
Together, we can ensure that the post-2015 development
agenda promotes the human rights, health and well-being of the
largest generation of young people in history.
Together, working in partnership with young people, we can
enable them to survive, thrive and transform our world, and
deliver a better future for all of us.

he word breakfast literally

supported by research

StepS to
change
With kelly
Kelly Armatage is the inventor of A.S.K. - A
Serenity Kit. This Therapist in a KIT is a 3 step
subconscious re-wiring technique that creates
major change. See www.aserenitykit.com
Each week, Kelly will show us the “3 Steps To
Change” on a specific life subject.
3 Steps to Change - Negative Thinking
1. Knowledge
Our thoughts create
our emotions. We can
have between 50-70,000
thoughts per day. So if you
are feeling angry, anxious
and sad a lot of the time,
then 40,000+ of those
thoughts are negative. Now
you have knowledge of this
information, it is easy to
go forward to solve your
negative thinking.
2. Get Mind
Cleaning
Our minds have power
yes, but with an applied
effort; we have 100%
power over the mind. So
if you have practised a
negative mindset up until
this point, you have the
power to establish and
practise a positive, strong
and happy mindset.
3. Look for Ways
There are many ways to clean up
the negative thoughts in the mind
- praying, meditation, affirmations,
cognitive behavioral therapy, neuro
linguistic programming, listening
to audiobooks. It is a continual
practise, but as you practise and
practice and practise, old behaviours
fall by the wayside, your happiness
goes up several notches and with
a dedicated commitment; even
enlightenment can be obtained.`

Q&A with RBH
Dr.Nada Jawahery-Chief Dietician answers our readers’
questions pertaining to a wholesome lifestyle
Kauser A- Is there some
way to avoid food borne
illness or food poisoning.
My children love eating from
fast food joints and I am just
worried that the more they eat
from outside, the more they
are prone to getting ill.
Dr.Nada: Many parents are
worried that the more their
children eat outside, the more
likely they will be to getting
food borne illness. It might
help to choose a fast food place
that has an open kitchen, so
people can see how the food
is prepared, and whether the
food preparation staff washed
their hands before preparing
the food. It is safer to eat
food that is cooked, because
cooking can destroy harmful
bacteria. Avoid raw sliced
fruit, vegetables, uncooked
sandwiches, and raw meats.
Raw foods are sources for
food borne illness because the
vegetables and sliced fruit may
not be washed properly. For
example, choose to order a well
done steak or burger, with a
side of cooked vegetables.
Salma Fahd- Are there really
added advantages of eating fruits
and vegetables that are provided
at the local farmer’s market?
Dr.Nada:
There
are
advantages to buying fruits and
vegetables from a local farmer’s
market. A local farmer can
provide fruits and vegetables
that are in season. In season
fruits and vegetables are usually
more budget friendly than
buying fruits and vegetables that
are out of season.
Stuart F. Is it true that fatty
acids in olive oil convert to
trans fatty acids when heated?
Dr.Nada: It is true that when
extra virgin olive oil is heated
to a high temperature, that
the healthy fats can convert
to trans fatty acids. Other oils
can also lose their nutritional
benefits when cooked at a
high temperature. Oils that
can withstand heat better
and retain their nutritional
qualities in cooking, include
corn oil and sunflower oil.

tickled with new and exciting recipes is a
challenge, one which can be mastered by a
person of any gender, as long as they know
the difference between delectable food and
just food.
“Men’s Kitchen” is not your ordinary
cooking show. It is an Arabic educational
cooking programme, hosted by young
Bahraini men, that gives a fun twist to
your typical cooking presentation. The
show is presented by Hamad Abdulla
and directed by the talented Anas Janahi
and produced by Shabaka TV. While it
aims to promote the idea of having male
cooks in the kitchen, it is also encouraging
Arab males to break the barrier and the
stereotype of having just females in the
kitchen and showcase how they can make
the most out of this habit.
Seeing as people adopting the healthy

Saffron Drink

an
expensive
one too. People
mostly use it for
its unique flavor
in food such as
refreshments. It
has very significant
nutrients
and
chemical compounds
which are beneficial in providing
medicinal benefits.
One of the main saffron benefits
when used in cooking food is that it
contains many plant derived chemical
components which are known to prevent
diseases. It is also used as therapeutic
remedies that make our body lose its
depressing characteristics making it a
dietary necessity sometimes. In many
religions, saffron is not just
considered a spice. It is
used in various types
of therapies like body
healing, detoxification
and also in the spas.
Saffron also helps maintain
the blood pressure and
keeps heart diseases at bay,
as well as helps cell formation

ost people think that yoga is a set of fancy moves that
typically “posers” like to practice, and in some cases, it
is. True yogis, however, know that there is more to be done
off the mat in yoga than on it. Yoga is a lifestyle, an attempt
to bring union into our mind, body and soul but also union
with all that is. It is a commitment to go through a personal
journey of self-discovery and hopefully self-realization.
There are eight limbs to yoga, one of which is Niyama
(in Sanskrit) or devotion. The beautiful thing I find about
Niyama is most teachers will ask you to contemplate on
what Niyama means to you personally in your own unique
experience on your spiritual path.
To me Niyamas are a beautiful act of faith, it is not tied to
an end result, and it is unconditional dedication. I realized
this while reading the Aleph by Paulo Coelho (yes, it really
is something) and in his second chapter he explains that
Chinese bamboo grows in a very unique way. A tiny shoot
grows shortly after a seed is sown and remains the same
size for five years. During that time, this tiny shoot grows a
complex root system that goes deep into the earth to support
the shoot later in life. Suddenly, almost magically, five years
later, it shoots up 25 meters at once! What would happen if we
started treating our objects of devotion like a bamboo shoot?
What if we water it with faith, sing to it, and treat it with love,
even on the days it looks like pathetic tiny few leaves? What
if we trusted that once we have paid all our dues on the effort
scale our bamboo sticks will outgrow us twenty times over?
What does that have to do with the fancy pose in the
picture? I’m getting there… This pose is called Hanuman,
it is dedicated to the monkey God Hanuman, King Rama’s
greatest devotee. Rama’s wife, Sita, was abducted by the
demon king of Sri Lanka, Ravana. Hanuman demonstrated
his devotion and love for Rama by taking a giant leap from
India to Sri Lanka to save Sita. The simple lesson is: “Power
comes from Devotion”. This pose, to me, beautifully shows
the manifestation of devotion as you gently go beyond what
you thought humanly possible of your body, when you accept
pain as it arises and offer your efforts as each breath arises
and unfolds.

YOUR STAR TODAY
ARIES
20th March - 20th April
Listen to what other people
have to say to you today. There
are valuable experiences waiting
for you around the corner. The important
thing for you to do now is simply recognize
the opportunities when they come. Roads
to success aren’t always well marked. Take
a chance on one that has no signs at all.
LEO
20th July - 20th Aug
Be careful of how your words
come across to others. You
might not realize how much
other people’s feelings are being affected until it is too late. You might consider just backing off for a while and
taking a break from your normal stage performance. Sit at home to practice your lines.
SAGITTARIUS
20th Nov - 20th Dec
Things may seem a little cloudy
from your vantage point today, but
this is no reason to be blue. It could be
that adjustments need to be made before you
are able to smoothly relate to others. Take
this opportunity to attend to things that you
normally wouldn’t think of dealing with.
TAURUS
20th April - 20th May
You might find that your emotions are more in tune with the
world around you today. It could
be that you are even feeling a bit psychic. Go
with your hunches. You will find that rational
thinking may not be the best way to handle
situations right now. Be the sensitive one who
feels things out before taking action.
VIRGO
20th Aug - 20th Sept
Today could be the day that you
have been waiting for. Realize
that you have the tender, gentle,
and sincere nature necessary to sweet talk
your way through any situation. Indeed,
if there is something that needs resolution in your life, now would be a good
time to work to smooth things over.
CAPRICORN
20th Dec - 20th Jan
Try not to see all the negative
things in everything today. Reverse this trend and concentrate on
the positive. You will be picking up on subtle
signals from others that can be very helpful as
you gather data throughout your day. As you
proceed through it, keep in mind that everything need not be a race to the finish line.
GEMINI
20th May - 20th June
You might find that you are
second-guessing yourself today. Voices in your head are
louder than usual, and it could be that
you are the one who is putting the brakes
on your own train. Intuitions are trying
to break through. Do more feeling instead of thinking. Give your mind a rest.
LIBRA
20th Sep - 20th Oct
Something is clicking in your
brain today that is urging you
to take action. You may feel a bit
of restlessness in the air that makes you
want to get up and go. The problem is, the
place you need to go may not be so obvious at first. Tender emotions may be
getting in the way of decisive action.
AQUARIUS
20th Jan - 20th Feb
Try to curb your tongue today.
There is no reason to lash out at
others. You will find that the more
sensitive the approach you take, the farther
you will get in your pursuit of whatever it
is you are aiming for. Today might find you
feeling a bit moody, and it could be that
your emotions are running away with you.
HA HA...HEE HEE...HO HO...!

If a man opens the car door
for his wife, you can be sure of
one thing: either the car is new
or the wife.
CANCER
20th June - 20th July
Today is an excellent day for
you, in which you will find that
things flow naturally in the exact
way you have visualized. You might even
find that things actually go much better than you had envisioned them! Go
about your endeavours with confidence.
The whole world is not out to get you.
SCORPIO
20th Oct - 20th Nov
You will find that your emotions
are much more under control today. You are able to strike a happy balance and avoid extraordinary extremes that
scare others away. In fact, quite the opposite
is true. People will be attracted to you as you
provide a life raft on these turbulent waters.
PISCES
20th Feb - 20th Mar
Your thinking is clear today,
and you will find that generally
things are running smoothly. Your
watery perspective on everything is very
much in line with where you need to be at
this time. In other words, you are doing
everything exactly right. Be yourself and let
other people adapt to your way of thinking.

abeel Rajab recently gave an
interview to a local Arabic
newspaper where he claims that
“through his meetings with the officials
of the Bahrain Ministry of Interior
(MOI) in prison that the government
is convinced of the necessity to find a
solution for this crisis”. He claims that
his objective is to merely find “solutions
for the human rights issue in Bahrain”.
How does Nabeel expect the people in
Bahrain or the government to believe
his empty words? How can he expect
the country to forgot the damage that
he is responsible for? How can he be
forgiven for making statements that do
not reflect the reality of his actions?.
Nabeel, together with his loud hailers
in the West, are responsible for
ruining this country’s reputation. He
and his followers have used Western
powers and NGOs to wrongly attack
the government and the people. He
knows the people behind the violence,
and he is aware of the facts but yet, he
has not taken the time to defend the
honour of this country and its people.
If Nabeel wants the people and the
government to accept he has turned
a new leaf - he will need to prove his
worth.

reporting since 2011 by condemning:
l The gangs of “peaceful” protestors
who went into expatriate areas and
dragged innocent workers out of
their homes and took them to GCC

and abused.
l The group who fired an iron rod home
through a home made launcher that
penetrated skull of a young lady.
l The attack on Arfan, who is in a
vegetative state after being beaten with
an iron rod and his tongue cut out.
l The death of an elderly taxi driver at
the wheel of his cab after being attacked
by a group of “protestors”.
l The murder of policemen and those
injured after being attacked with petrol
bombs, home made bombs and other
deadly weapons.
l Dr. Ali AlEkri and Dr. Ghasan Dhaif.
AlEkri and other medics who celebrated
“victory” by dancing in the corridors of
Salmaniya Medical Complex,.
l Teachers who took children out from
schools and encouraged sectarian
attacks.
l Medics who exposed patient
identities to the media and refused to
treat non-Shi’a patients.
ou may be surprised
to learn that dogs
need protection, too. Dogs
naturally have protection
from their fur, but that
doesn’t mean they can’t be

be painful, and they can also
increase your dog’s risk of
cancer.

Rajab’s destructive sectarianism and
false allegations have created undue
fear and concern within Bahraini
society. So, the message to Nabeel
Rajab, on behalf of Bahrain is:
l Retract your false allegations against
the government of Bahrain.
l Make a public announcement to the
international media and human rights
organisations to correct the manipulated
information against Bahrain.
l Tell the youth on the streets to go
back to school and not indulge in
criminal sectarian terrorist acts.
l Tell Isa Qassim to withdraw his fatwa
to “crush the police”.
l Expose Al Wefaq’s sectarian agenda
and policies.
l Condemn the attacks on security
personnel.
l Condemn the armed militia and
coalition groups that carry out terrorist
acts and expose their identities.
l Expose the link to Chalabi.
l Surrender your Iranian passport.
Then and only then, maybe the people
and the government of Bahrain might
be inclined to consider the possibility of
accepting Nabeel Rajab’s words.
Until then, Nabeel Rajab does not
represent the people of Bahrain who
continue to strive for a peaceful future.
Bahrain was not built on sectarianism
but through freedom and equality,
which is enshrined in the constitution
for all, regardless of gender, colour,
creed or nationality.

KEEPING YOUR CAREER
AND PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT CONTINUOUS
By Rhona Dabu
Training Adviser
Al Moalem
Institute
21
More than 22 countries
under one roof!
I
n a progressively competitive job
market, continuous professional
development is necessary. Employees
are continually being evaluated on
their knowledge, performance and
skills. So how can you stay on the
game?
With busy schedules, training
is seldom to think about but it is
important to consider your personal
vision where you would like to be
and want your professional growth
to go. Proper training is fundamental
part of keeping your competency,
employability and keeping your
development continuous.
Here are ways to start your
development.
1. KEEPING YOUR PROFESSIONAL
KNOWLEDGE UP-TO-DATE
l When is the last time you read
trade magazine? How long has it
been since the last seminar you
attended? We need to improve our
skills and knowledge in order not
to lose our credibility. To stay in
line for development consider the
following:
d READING TRADE PUBLICATION
d ATTENDING INDUSTRY EVENTS
d USING SOCIAL MEDIA
2. UPGRADING YOUR
PERFORMANCE
l You need to know areas of your
job and review your performance
to improve developing the areas
that may direct you for a course
or workshop, or even online study
in order to stay aware with new
technologies,
regulation
and
procedures.
3. BENCHMARK THE JOB MARKET
l According to Corinne Mills
we should be aware of the changing
needs of the job market. We need to
check posts to find out what skills
qualifications are asked similar to
your position to assess your fair
market value.
Professional development should
be continuous part of our career
and should not be underestimated.
“If you don’t focus on professional
development, you won’t be
marketable in your field in five
years” says Alexandra Levit. We
always have to be looking ahead
to what is going to be required in
your promising next role. You need
to protect employability, you need
to take charge of your Personal
Development.

addition, the volunteers were wearing
their country’s traditional clothes.
Besides that, small and live shows
were performed varying between
traditional songs and dances.
The event had a lot of interaction
between the international volunteers
and the public. aimed at cultural
and religious acceptance and creating
global mindset in the society.
“Amani” who was part of the public
that visited the event says: that the
event made her realise that the world
is really a small village. And then she
adds, the event was really fun and
enjoyable due to the interaction with
the foreigners.
While the international volunteer
“Pie” from China says that the event
gave her the opportunity to get to
know the Bahraini culture through the
interaction with the public.
Notably, AIESEC runs community
development programs through out
the whole year and brings international
volunteers from all over the world to
volunteer in order to activate the projects

INNOVATION, TECHNOLOGY
FOCUS OF FINANCE FORUM
World Islamic Banking Conference in December
DT News Network
Manama
he world’s largest and
longest-running gathering
of global Islamic finance leaders
is set to connect the industry
with pioneers and innovators in
the financial technology space.
Supported by the Central Bank
of Bahrain the World Islamic
Banking Conference (WIBC)
will focus very prominently on
the changing face of financial
services in the digital age.
The internet and now near
ubiquity of mobile phones
are challenging the banking
sector at an exponential pace.
Mobile money, crowdfunding,
peer-to-peer lending and
other new business models
allow individuals to perform
traditional banking services
outside of the formal banking
system – and WIBC 2015 is
considered the definitive
platform to address these
T
challenges.
At the helm of WIBC is
Dr. Sayd Farook, who was
recently appointed the new
Vice-Chairman and CEO
of ME Global Advisors, an
intelligence platform serving
the emerging & frontiers
markets within the Middle East
North Africa Southeast Asia
(MENASEA) region.
Dr. Farook brings to WIBC
extensive industry experience,
including
developing
technology platforms to
provide practical insights and
spearhead the new age of digital
banking for the industry.
Speaking ahead of the event

UAE is top expatriate destination in the world: study
Dubai
here is no other country
in the world that attracts
more working expatriates than
the UAE, according to a new
report.
The latest careers website
LinkedIn study, which covers
more than 380 million
T
members around the world,
shows that the UAE remains
the most popular destination
for professionals seeking
greener pastures abroad,
beating other job markets
like Canada, Australia and
Singapore.
LinkedIn came up with the
findings after looking at every
position that was added to
its member profiles between
January 1, 2014 and December
31, 2014. Based on LinkedIn’s
list, the UAE saw the biggest
entry of professionals, posting
a gain of 1.89 per cent of its
total workforce.
In contrast, other countries
saw their professionals move
away, with India losing the
most talent, at 0.23 per cent
of its workforce, France losing
0.20 per cent and Italy 0.19
per cent. Most professionals
who moved into the UAE
landed roles in professional
services, architectural and
engineering, financial services
and insurance, technology
(software) and retail and
consumer products sectors.
They were hired mostly
as salespeople, marketing
specialists, project managers,
corporate finance specialists,
accountants, consultants and
mechanical engineers.
“This is the second year that
the UAE has been revealed as
the most attractive destination
for professionals,” said Ali
Matar, head of talent solutions,
LinkedIn Middle East and
North Africa (Mena).

Islamic

Banking Group (ABG) has
announced a net profit of
US$150 million for the first
half of 2015, reporting an
increase of 5pc over the net
profit of the same period
of last year, while the net
income of the second
quarter of 2015 reached
US$82m, increasing by
19pc over the net income
of the first quarter of
2015.
The balance sheet items
achieved moderate increases,
as total assets increased by 2pc,
total financing and investments
by 2pc and customer accounts
by 1pc at the end of June
2015 compared to the end
December 2014. These results
reflect the Group continues to
achieve the excellent profit and
operational results, benefiting
from the large diversification
in income sources from
different core businesses,
where the income from these
sources witnessed remarkable
growth during the first half
of 2015, despite the effects of
currencies devaluation and
fluctuation in financial and
economic situations regionally
and internationally.
Commenting on these
results, Sheikh Saleh Abdullah
Kamel, Chairman of Al
Baraka Banking Group, said,
“The unstable political and
economic situations continued
during the first half of 2015
regionally and internationally
offset by noticeable and
perseverance international
efforts to enhance recovery and
growth prospects in developed
and emerging countries and
amid restricted regulatory and
supervisory environment. All
these created challenges for
the banking environment in
the markets where we operate.
But we nevertheless note
with satisfaction that ABG
continued to achieve good
results, which reflects the
Group success in following the
sound Islamic banking model

strategies that enabled it to deal
wisely with these developments
and to continue expanding its
business.”

the noticeable increases in

to diversify its income

“This is a long overdue
move by Google,” said Larry

marketing at Pace University.
“It allows them to incubate
these other businesses in a way
that doesn’t detract from its
core revenue.”
While Google is known as
the dominant player in Internet
search, it has launched a variety
of projects in recent years that
are marginally related at best to
its core operation.
The projects include selfdriving cars, Google Glass,
Internet balloons, drones,

and its Google+ social network,
among others.
Many of these “moonshots”
are likely to fail, according to
Chiagouris, but any failure
would not end up hurting the
Google brand.
“They don’t want to see the

other entities,” Kay said.
“Google really only has one
business, which is search and
advertising. The rest is what I
call science projects.”
The new structure means
that “if they are not making

merge that with something else
or spin it off,” Kay said.

group, with executive chairman
Eric Schmidt doing the same.
The Google unit, to be
headed by current company
vice president Sundar Pichai,
will include search, ads, maps,
YouTube, Android and related
technology infrastructure.
The new units will include
Google X (for self-driving cars
and other new technologies),
Calico (for research on aging),
Nest (for home automation),
Fiber (for high-speed Internet)
and others.
The new operating structure
“will be introduced in phases
over the coming months,”
according
to
Google’s
regulatory filing, and will mean
separate financial statements
from the Google unit and its
parent.
Jan Dawson at Jackdaw
Research said that with the
transformation, “it will finally
become clear quite how large
and unprofitable all the noncore initiatives at Google are,
which might well increase
pressure from shareholders to
exit some of those businesses.”
Dawson said the move is
also “personal” for Page and
his Google cofounder Sergey
Brin, who becomes president
of Alphabet.
“Larry and Sergey have
quite clearly been increasingly
uninspired by merely running
a search engine and advertising
business, and this finally aligns
their job titles with what they
actually want to spend their
time doing,” Dawson said in a
blog post.
Ben Thompson, a technology
analyst and consultant, said on
his Stratechery blog that Page
“is not a strategy and business
nerd” but “for lack of a better
description, a change-theworld nerd, and it seems clear
that he found the day-to-day
business of managing a very
profitable utility to be not only
uninteresting but a distraction
from what he truly wanted to
do.”
The reorganization comes
amid concerns that Google’s
dominance of the tech sector
may have peaked as the
landscape evolves.

The jet came down at 0738 GMT in

Tokyo ends nuclear shutdown
Tokyo
apan yesterday restarted its nuclear
power programme after a shutdown
triggered by the 2011 Fukushima crisis,
as the government pushes to return
to a cheaper energy source despite
widespread public opposition.
Utility Kyushu Electric Power
turned on a reactor at Sendai, about
1,000 kilometres (620 miles) southwest
of Tokyo, at 10:30 am (0130 GMT).
The 31-year-old reactor – operating
under tougher post-Fukushima safety
rules – was expected to reach full
capacity around 11:00 pm yesterday
and would start generating power by
Friday.
Commercial operations would
begin early next month, a company

at the Fukushima plant, prompting
the shutdown of Japan’s stable of 50

The accident sent radiation over a
wide area and forced tens of thousands
from their homes – many of whom
will likely never return – in the worst
nuclear accident since Chernobyl in
1986.
Decommissioning of the crippled
Fukushima reactors is expected to take

ISRAEL POLICE QUIZ EXTREMIST CHIEF
Jerusalem
srael police questioned
yesterday a Jewish extremist
leader who condoned torching
churches amid an uproar over
recent hate crimes, including
the deadly firebombing of a
Palestinian home.
Benzi Gopstein, who heads farright group Lehava, has not been
linked to any recent attacks, but
his comments regarding churches

A formal complaint to Israeli
Attorney General Yehuda

the body in charge of Catholic

SAUDI REJECTS RUSSIA CALL
No team-up with Assad against IS
Moscow
audi Arabia’s foreign
minister yesterday poured
cold water on Russian calls
to join forces with the Syrian
authorities against Islamic State
jihadists, insisting it would
never work with President
Bashar Al Assad.
Moscow – one of Assad’s few
remaining allies – has called
for coordination between
the Syrian government and
members of an international
coalition fighting the extremist
group, which controls swathes
of territory in Syria and Iraq.
But Saudi Foreign Minister
Adel Al Jubeir insisted there
would be no cooperation with
the Syrian regime after meeting
Russian counterpart Sergei
Lavrov in Moscow.
“As for a coalition in which
Saudi Arabia would participate
with the government of Syria,
then we need to exclude that. It
is not part of our plans,” Jubeir
said in comments translated

has not changed... there is no
place for Assad in the future of
Syria,” Jubeir said.
“We think that Bashar Al

added.
Saudi Arabia is part of a
US-led coalition that began an
air campaign against IS in Syria
last September.

240,000 lives.
The two ministers last
met in Qatar on August 3
when Lavrov, Jubeir and US
Secretary of State John Kerry
held a three-way meeting, with
Syria topping the agenda.
Lavrov said Moscow was not
looking to establish a formal
alliance against the radical
group but warned a failure to
cooperate could open the door
to extremists.

that his country was open for
investment as firms signed deals
worth more than $22 billion on
his visit to China.
Despite
his

reputation, Modi moved to
engage with Beijing, seeking to
deliver on election promises for
foreign investment.
China is India’s biggest
trading partner with two-way
commerce totalling $71 billion
(62 billion euros) in 2014. But
India’s trade deficit with China
has soared from just $1 billion
in 2001-02 to more than $38

CARRARD NAMED AS REFORM CHIEF
Paris
IFA yesterday appointed
Swiss lawyer Francois
Carrard, who helped restore
the Olympic movement’s
credibility after the Salt Lake
City scandal, to lead the world
football governing body’s
Reform Committee.
Carrard, 77, previously
guided the International
Olympic Committee through
its own governance reforms in
the wake of the bribery scandalhit Winter Olympics of 2002.
FIFA is currently reeling from
its own corruption turmoil
after seven football officials
were arrested in a raid on a
Zurich hotel on the eve of a
FIFA congress in May.
“It is vital for the future of
global football to restore the
integrity and reputation of its
governing body,” said Carrard.
“It’s a very significant crisis,
on a par with what I came
across at the IOC between
1998 to 2000,” he told a teleconference call.
F
Francois Carrard
“Once again we have
accusations of corruption,
structural reforms to put in
place, interference from the
political world and sponsors.
“There are similarities (with
the Olympics), even if the
situations are different and that
the world has changed in the
past 15 years.”
He said he had accepted
FIFA’s call to help as he
considered it “important
to find reforms which are
acceptable to all to restore
FIFA’s credibility”. “I’ve got
this experience of already
having sporting crises to
manage,” he added.
Carrard was appointed
following consultation with
the six football confederations
and he will be assisted by
representatives from two of
each. “As the independent
chairman, I am committed

The newcomers look solid
Sometimes, it’s hard to gauge how good the three
newly promoted teams are in the first few weeks, as the
excitement and adrenaline of playing in the Premier
League course through them. But if their first games
are anything to go by, this year’s batch stands a decent
chance of living to fight another season.
Bournemouth looked good in their home game
against Aston Villa. And it took two big Brad Guzan
saves to conserve the stalemate in the first half.
Ultimately, a 72nd-minute Rudy Gestede goal gave
Villa the points. But the wonderfully nicknamed
Cherries held their own.
“It was a really good performance from us,”
Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe told the press after
the game. “I can’t be too critical. We created chances
and got into good areas. When you get those chances
you have to be clinical.”
Watford played to a 2-2 tie at Everton, which needed
two equalizers in the final 15 minutes just to salvage the
draw. “I’m very happy with the players and the result,”
new Norwich manager Quique Flores told the media.
“We have only been working together for six weeks and
we have lots of different nationalities.”
Norwich, meanwhile, was controversially disallowed
an equalizer that would have brought the game back
to 2-2 after an early 2-0 deficit, before Yohan Cabaye
made it 3-1 to Crystal Palace. Which is to say that the
Canaries might well have gotten at least a point, had it
not been for that call. And perhaps they deserved more.
“We dominated the game at the start and we had
to take our chances,” manager Alex Neil said. “But we
didn’t do that.”
We got some lovely goals
Everton’s first equalizer came on a Ross Barkley laser.
Odion Ighalo then made coveted Toffees defender
John Stones look stupid on Watford’s second go-ahead
goal. Cabaye’s aforementioned goal was nice, too.
And, finally, Willian’s cross, which deflected off
Federico Fernandez and looped into the top corner
behind Lukasz Fabianski wasn’t so much pretty as it
was weird. So maybe take a look at that as well.
Everton could be in for a long ride
Two seasons ago, during Roberto Martinez’s first
campaign after succeeding David Moyes, Everton
finished fifth, a well-deserved reward for a year of
strong performances. Last year, however, the Toffees
languished at mid-table all year and never really put
it together.
Everton should be better than that, especially
considering the wealth of talent in its squad. But
against Watford, Martinez’s men hardly gave the
impression that they’ve shaken their sluggishness from
last season. The draw, frankly, flattered them. And
while the back line is loaded with three England
players, it looked shaky again.

Claudio Ranieri might still have it
Leicester City’s first season back in the top
flight last year was a weird one. The Foxes lost just
one of their first five games and then dropped 11 of 13
– while tying the other two. They then went unbeaten
in three games and followed that up by going winless
in eight, losing six of those. And then they finished the
season by winning seven of nine. They had been dead
last for 19 consecutive weeks but wound up placing
14th. Nigel Pearson was fired all the same.
Enter Ranieri, the “Tinker Man” who hadn’t
worked in England since he was succeeded
by Jose Mourinho at Chelsea in 2004. He
was seen as the last man to manage
Chelsea before the club got big and
sometimes mocked a tad for his
studious ways. But upon his return,
his side smashed four goals past
Sunderland in a 4-2 win. Many
had tipped Ranieri as the first
manager to be fired this
season.
The big clubs were
underwhelming
In the first game of the
season, United eked by
Spurs on an own goal
in a most forgettable
game. Neither club
gave a strong account
of itself, nor did they
convince
anybody
that some sort of title
challenge might lurk
inside them.
In the late game,
Chelsea gave up two
leads to Swansea City
and played much of the
second half with 10 men
after Thibaut Courtois
got himself sent off. The
defending champions had to
settle for a 2-2 tie.
Jose Mourinho’s men weren’t
very impressive, either. They got
their goals on a low Oscar free kick
that snuck through traffic and bounced
in at the far post and on that strange
deflected own goal. Swansea, meanwhile,
created chances aplenty, outshooting Chelsea
10-3 in shots on goal. Andre Ayew was allowed
to take two shots from up close for the first goal
and Bafetimbi Gomis converted his own penalty after
Courtois clumsily hacked him down at the edge of the
box. (Yahoo)

Barcelona-5, Sevilla-4
Argentinian Lionel Messi (centre) vies

Tbilisi
edro shrugged off rampant
speculation over his future
to score the winner in extra
time and help Barcelona lift
the UEFA Super Cup yesterday
with a 5-4 win over Sevilla.
Amid reports that Pedro
requested to leave Barcelona
with a transfer to Manchester
United nearly complete, the
forward came off the bench
to slam home the winner on
a rebound following a Lionel
Messi free kick in the 115th
minute.
The dramatic late winner
came after Messi had already
scored on two free kicks for
the first time in his career, and
Sevilla had rallied back from
three goals down in the second
half.
Ever Banega had given Sevilla
a surprise lead with a free kick
of his in the third minute, but
P
Messi quickly reversed the
scoreline in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Luis Suarez drew a foul at
the edge of the box and Messi
placed his free kick over the
wall to equalise in the seventh
minute.
Messi’s second goal was
impressive as he curled the ball
in from 30 yards to beat Sevilla
goalkeeper Beto into the top
corner in the 15th minute.
Barcelona added a third
goal just before half-time when
Suarez broke away free on goal
but had his shot saved by Beto.
Suarez then collected the ball
and crossed to Rafinha, who
started in place of Neymar, to
tap home.
Suarez found the net himself
after being played through by
Sergio Busquets in the 52nd
minute to make it 4-1 but
Sevilla were not finished.
Jose
Antonio
Reyes
responded five minutes later
by redirecting a Vitolo cross,
and Kevin Gameiro closed the
deficit to one with a penalty in
the 72nd minute after Jeremy
Mathieu hauled down Vitolo.
Sevilla kept pushing and
found the equaliser nine
minutes from time when Ciro
Immobile slipped a low cross
through Barcelona’s defence
for Yevhen Konoplyanka to
score. Pedro’s winner came as
Messi was lining up another
free kick, which initially
rebounded off the wall and
came back to Messi, whose
second shot was saved by Beto,
only for Pedro to put the ball in
the roof of the net.
Coke had an opportunity to
equalise for Sevilla late on but
his free header drifted wide,
and Adil Rami saw another
chance narrowly miss the net
at the death. (ESPN)
