The ministry said this is under a ministerial order on the adoption of the Gulf Technical Regulation to reduce the use of luminescent lights with low efficiency. The energy-efficient bulbs would reduce pollution rate by up to 180,000 tons per year, according to data I Al Zayani during inspection conditions of industrial areas. This led to the creation of an industrial foundation that contributes in the development and growth of the national economy and creation of job opportunities in the local market, he said. He stressed the need for coordination between the industrial tenants and those in-charge of industrial areas to find suitable solutions for anything that hinders economic development. “The achievements of Bahrain in the industrial and commercial sectors were part of the positive cooperation between the private and public sectors, in addition to facilities and privileges the government provide to attract investors,” the minister highlighted. The 100,000-square metre Sitra roundabout industrial area has about 19 tenants, while the 1,500.000-square meter South Alba industrial area has 162 tenants. The programme will reflect positively on the consumer with lower power bills provided by EWA. The new programme will reflect positively on the consumer and reduce the operational cost of bulbs, maintenance, and electricity bill. The ministry indicated there will be regulatory programme on every light bulbs sold in the Kingdom. The ministry stated it took sufficient time to study and prepare the new regulations for lighting lamps and notified the World Trade Organization to make necessary adjustments. 10 Tuesday, August 18, 2015 NEED A LOAN? BE GOOD TO YOUR FACEBOOK FRIENDS FB receives patent allowing it to calculate credit worthiness of friends on social media Tahir Haneef tahir@dt.bh Manama our Facebook (FB) friends could determine your eligibility for a loan: not at the moment, but possibly in the near future. The social media company recently received a patent from the US patent office that will help them understand the credit worthiness of your FB friends. Even though, the patent also grants FB the ability to undertake other functions including filtering of spam messages; the ‘credit equation’ has created uneasiness among its users. Head of Bahrain office, Al Tamimi Foutoun Hajjar, opined that the use of social media sites to determine the credit worthiness raises ethical concerns. “The credibility of Y Foutoun Hajjar Mahesh Balasubramanian judging an individual’s credit worthiness based on his/ her connections is at best questionable,” she said. Mahesh Balasubramanian, Audit Partner at KPMG Fakhro said the information available on FB and other social networking sites may not really be accurate and reliable adding, “It is also important to note from regulator perspective how the credit score determined will be permissible under banking norms.” He said that “Information privacy or data protection laws prohibit the disclosure or misuse of information held on private individuals. The US is notable for not having adopted a comprehensive information-privacy law but rather having adopted limited sectorial laws in some areas.” Ms Hajjar is of the opinion that the financial institutions may face a backlash of public criticism if they attempt to use this type of technology. “The big banks know that this type of profiling is a ‘dangerous game’ which may backfire,” while also pointing out that the use of social media to gauge an applicant’s credit worthiness is unnecessarily punitive.” It can mean the difference between lending someone a significant (sometimes life changing) loan or not. Although this technology is not new – it is used in the US and other countries by various types of non-bank lenders, banks and other financial institutions may find themselves in breach of privacy laws if they start implementing this type of tool across social media sites. Further, banks open themselves up to public criticism across social media networks in the event that an applicant is refused a loan based on his/her social connections.” The patent awarded to FB may not be easy to implement in practice as the information collected should follow certain basic principles of data protection, the Audit Partner at KPMG Fakhro added. For all data collected there should be a stated purpose, the information thus collected cannot be disclosed without The ‘credit equation’ has created uneasiness among its users prior consent and data should be deleted if not needed for the stated purpose. “The lack of information about the parameters for the patent’s use — how many friends will be polled and how, for example — also leaves many privacy questions unanswered,” Balasubramanian said adding data collection and dissemination needs to be to be governed by an ethical framework and should be continuously monitored by regulatory supervision. Big Screens- Getting Bigger & Better W ith the world pushing the boundaries of cutting edge technology, moviegoers and cinema fanatics are relishing in world class entertainment options. The experience has intensified tenfold and is now much more than just a night out with popcorn and soda. Added amenities like in-theatre dining, 3-D films, gigantic digital screens and comfortable seating arrangements are keeping the cinema industry thriving. And for a country like Bahrain-that has its fair share of diverse cinema going audience- Novo Cinemas, an exciting new concept, is offering Bahrain its ‘two’ firsts: an IMAX theatre - the world’s most immersive big-screen experience - and a Novo 7-Star theatre - offering luxurious comfort and personalised service. In an exclusive interview with DT News, Novo Cinemas, CEO Debbie Stanford-Kristiansen, shared why cinemas are here to stay and how Novo Cinemas remains on its toes, giving viewers cinematic experience that is out of this world. DT News-How does Novo cinemas manage to remain a pioneer in investing time and money into innovative entertainment options? Debbie-We were the first cinema to bring online booking and cinema e-kiosks to the Middle East, the first to offer a cinema dedicated mobile app, the first to offer IMAX in the UAE; and we’re certainly looking forward to continuing that legacy in Bahrain with IMAX, 7-STAR, and hopefully much more to come. DT News- What would you tell the Bahraini people to assure them that watching a movie at Novo Cinema would be a memorable experience for them? Debbie-Our NOVO 7-STAR theatre offers an exclusive and premium cinema experience: only 30 seats - all fully-reclining, luxury leather seats including a blanket and pillow for extra comfort; individual iPads for easy ordering; a private lounge and personal butler service. There’s no better way to treat yourself and your friends than the experience of the latest blockbuster movie from the exquisite comfort of our 7-STAR theatre. DT News-With entertainment options coming to us in large and varied ways, do you feel it is becoming harder to get people entertained now or movies at big screens will never get obsolete? The advancement of time has certainly brought a lot of technological updates and, how do you manage to remain on your toes to keep the public hooked to cinematic experiences. Debbie-There will always be demand for cinema – to experience the thrill of a blockbuster with family and friends or as part of a group. Like a sporting event, or any artistic performance, cinema is a shared experience, and whatever emotions the filmmaker is guiding you towards are magnified by the sheer fact that you’re feeling them with hundreds of others. At Novo Cinemas, we go one step further by offering patrons a ‘complete’ cinema experience, not only during the movie, but from the moment they step into the theatre. At Novo Cinemas, a great movie is just beginning. We want to offer moviegoers ‘A Great Time Out’. DT News-What has been the most challenging aspect of your position as the CEO of Novo Cinemas? Debbie- I always try to look at challenges as opportunities, and I always encourage my team to do the Brushing shoulders with the stars same. You would be amazed what great things can come out of changing your perspective, and adopting a more positive outlook – you become far more proactive as a result. I guess my biggest challenge was changing industries from the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) industry to Entertainment, but I immediately saw the opportunity: that there are major synergies between the two, and at the end of the day it’s all about ensuring you give your customer the best experience possible. I’m a people person, passionate about my team and passionate about delivering for our customers. I’m committed to going above and beyond expectations, and making sure we deliver great customer service, experience and satisfaction. That’s what drives me every day. DT News-What has been the most rewarding? Debbie-There have been so many rewarding experiences. First would be our rebranding exercise from Grand Cinemas to Novo Cinemas – the entire team worked on this project with the Branding Agency, and we all learned so much along the way. It was tremendously hard work but extremely rewarding. We wanted to create a funky, hip brand that was more in touch with our customers and their needs, and as a team we achieved it. It’s also very rewarding to see new locations developed, growing a new project from the concept to inception. I’m also very proud of our accomplishment earlier this year in organising Middle East’s first celebrity attended fan premiere. With our sister company, movie distributor Gulf Film, we hosted Liam Neeson for the Dubai premiere of his blockbuster movie, Taken 3. Over 2,500 fans attended the event; it was a fantastic night and Liam was a true star. DT News-Are the movies played in IMAX and IMAX 3D, specifically created to be viewed in this format? Is it hard to gain the rights to feature such movies and how do you decide on what movies will be screened by Novo Cinemas. Debbie Stanford-Kristiansen Debbie- There is absolutely no question about it - movies played on the IMAX screen were made for the IMAX screen. They haven’t just been enlarged to fit the big screen; they’ve been completely transformed. IMAX works closely with filmmakers by providing them with IMAX’s extremely high-resolution cameras or in a process called digital re-mastering, which enhances hundreds of details in every frame. Through our partnership and long-standing relationship with IMAX Corp, we receive an evergrowing line-up of movies - usually the year’s biggest movies - to screen for our IMAX audience. DT News- Has the technology advancement played a positive role in making cinematic experience better and bigger? Debbie -When we set out to ensure that we have the latest movie-viewing technology, our prime objective is to make the experience more and more immersive. This means allowing viewers to completely lose themselves in the experience - to be transported to different places, and to have no distraction from that emotional journey. Whether it’s advancements in image projection technology, or audio engineering, or even seat comfort, there will always be a way to improve the experience. Although there have always been great movies, from the time of silent pictures and black and white features, but of course we have to move with the times, and provide the latest and best technology. DT News-Does it impose any challenges as well? Debbie- There will always be advancements in technology, but the trick is to know when to invest. Is the latest technology a fad, or something that’s here to stay? Is there going to be another advancement in technology five minutes after you invest in the latest one? Probably. But you can’t ever fall behind. DT News- When it comes to enjoying movies on the big screen, do you have your specific type that you like to see? Are there any new releases or upcoming titles that you are looking forward to watching at IMAX? Debbie- I love action and adventure, romance and comedy almost all genres, really, except for horror. I’m really looking forward to the new James Bond movie, SPECTRE, which will also be showing in IMAX this November. I can’t wait to see it. Tuesday, August 18, 2015 Movie review TECH TALK 13 hash ag gaming By Abdulwahab Basil A snapshot from Battlefield 3 First Person shooter W not so Fantastic aFter all! Abdulwahab F antastic Four has always been my least favorite franchise of the Marvel hero universe. The 2005 release of the same concept, didn’t appeal to me, however I still went ahead to watch this rebooted version, expecting that maybe the advanced technological techniques would come into full visualization and change my mind about the franchise. Boy was I wrong! Not only was the movie’s monotonous direction and presentation horridly conducted, the special effects made it look like a feature from the nineties (make it eighties or even earlier than that). The film is a fantastic bore, fantastic drag and a fantastic yawn. Even when it starts good, looking a tad promising, it quickly plummets down albeit ending horribly. The film: The actors I had high hopes for were Miles Teller and Toby Kebbell. Since watching Toby in RocknRolla (2008) I loved his acting abilities. Same goes for Miles Teller after watching Whiplash (2014). I thought Toby would be another Heath Ledgers Joker in the making, sadly no. I felt that the actors portrayed no emotion, nothing really, they were boring to watch as if they were forced to act at gunpoint; not a glimpse of passion could be seen anywhere. I especially felt that Kate Mara had no business in this film, a miscast really. I’d say that Jessica Alba from the previous films had performed better. Michael B. Jordan was here and there, nothing special. To be frank I slept somewhat between halfway and minutes before the climax of the film- that just comes to show how boring this flick was. But when the super heroes fail miserably, we look at the nemesis-the second biggest aspect in a superhero movie besides the hero is the villain. Many villains that I was thrilled to watch, case in point were the Joker from The Dark Knight (2008) played by the legendary Heath Ledger, Thanos from Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) played by the wonderful Josh Brolin and a few others, who can easily carry the movie on their shoulders. I was expecting since Toby Kebbell was playing Doctor Doom, his acting would be on par with these great villains or at least somewhere near. Unfortunately that was nowhere to be seen, Doc Doom was Doc Lame. The villain is what makes the film in this particular genre along of course with the hero, although sometimes I am more interested in watching the villain. I was deeply saddened by this underwhelming portrayal of what I assumed would have been the only saving grace of this movie. The CGI: If it is one thing that I have come to despise in the film is the computer generated imagery aka CGI. Don’t get me wrong CGI is awesome when done right and used proper, when overused and bland it creates a movie like Fantastic 4 which really isn’t at all fantastic. The effects were weak and flavorless. For a budget of $200M (including marketing) I expected much eye candy. Take a look at other films released in the same timeline, Terminator: Genisys and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, the effects were superb especially in Terminator, I was lost for words when I saw the recreation of scenes from Terminator 1 and 2 put in Genisys. The effects here were as if done by students, scratch that students would have done better. I for one was expecting a lot more from one of my favorite directors ‘Josh Trank’ as I am an avid fan of his earlier film Chronicle (2008), the effects are much better in comparison to Fantastic. Also the climactic battle between the hero and villain was unconvincing; Doom was laughable as a supervillain. He would have made other villains like Thanos, Joker, and Green Goblin laugh at this utter weak performance combined with cheap CGI. All in all, a major disaster. Conclusion: Do not waste your time unless you want to sleep in the theatre, the film was not short of anything but a horrid experience. Leave it to Marvel to make the films not Fox or Sony because they just ruin it. Verdict: 2/10 elcome to another week of gaming! This week I’ll talk about First Person Shooters, more commonly known by the abbreviation FPS. Video gaming was mostly kept to arcades and then slowly a small spark was lit when companies started manufacturing home consoles and computers after which that spark exploded into a big bang of personal computers and consoles in almost every home! Gaming spread like wildfire pretty much like the Television during the 1950s in the United States. In the same way the television boomed some 60~70 years back, so did videogames. Historically it started with the game Pong (1972) but I will highlight the game DOOM (1993). DOOM (1993) Doom essentially epitomized the genre of first person shooters. The other day I was in Euphoria (DVD store in Seef Mall) and I was digging through their bargain bin and found Outlaws (1997). It was such a bargain and a must have for my library of games, a great addition to the collection of videogames I proudly own. Outlaws is basically Doom in the Wild West, instead of fighting monsters and aliens you’re fighting outlaws and bandits also shooting chickens! These games started evolving though with the My purchase from Euphoria, passing of the years, fps games included Outlaws (1997) stories both in-depth character driven such as Half Life (1998) and superficial campaign run and gun style fps like Call of Duty. And let’s not forget a major driving factor in fps games-multiplayer! In all honesty I believe if you ask any gamer out there about FPS games they’d most certainly cite Counter-Strike. Counter-Strike was and is a revolutionary title in the world of videogames. One thing worth noting is that the FPS genre is not all about ‘run and gun’ type style game there are a plethora of more serious nature such as the Elder Scrolls franchise, Half Life series and Thief as examples. I will certainly cover more of FPS in the next two columns showing you what it’s like to play this Counter-Strike (1999) awesome genre. 14 Tuesday, August 18, 2015 es ast as a heroine who do I don’t want to be typec t tha ny But yes, I won’t de at I a certain kind of cinema. wh romantic comedies are are romantic love stories or use as an audience those ca be t, os m the ing do enjoy e watching the kind of films that I lik - Deepika Padukone Kabir Khan is like JP Dutta: Saif Ali Khan Mumbai mkara actor Saif Ali Khan says that director Kabir Khan has similarities with veteran director J.P. Brazil GDP contraction to last through 2016 Brasília he outlook for Brazil’s economy worsened yesterday with GDP contraction forecast to extend into next year and inflation projections also slightly rising. A central bank survey of economists showed the economy is on course to shrink 2.01 per cent this year and for the first time indicated that the contraction will continue through 2016 with a shrinkage of 0.15pc. The survey also showed that inflation remains forecast at 9.32pc this year, but it raised the 2016 projection for price rises to 5.44pc from 5.43pc. The numbers come as the world’s seventh largest economy is struggling with a political crisis and a massive corruption scandal that has badly damaged state-owned oil giant Petrobras. Gross domestic product T grew 2.8 per cent compared to a year earlier between April and June, in-line with a forecast from analysts polled by Bloomberg News but down from three per cent in the previous quarter. Growth also faces “major constraints” for the rest of 2015 after China’s devaluation of its currency will likely increase competition for Thai exports, the National Economic and Social Development Board said. China’s central bank shocked world financial markets last week when it devalued the yuan, sparking fears of a currency war in Asia in which countries vie to keep their exports competitive. In response, Thailand’s planning agency trimmed its growth forecast to 2.7-3.2pc for the year, down from 3.04.0pc. BUSINESS Tuesday, August 18 , 2015 25 Citigroup to pay $180m as settlement New York S securities regulators ordered two Citigroup affiliates yesterday to pay $180 million to settle charges that they defrauded investors by falsely claiming a pair of hedge funds were low-risk. Citigroup collected nearly $3 billion from 4,000 investors by claiming the ASTA/MAT fund and the Falcon fund were low-risk investments akin to investing in government bonds, said the US Securities and Exchange Commission. In 2008, both funds collapsed during the financial crisis. “The funds were not bond substitutes, and an U investment in the funds carried significantly greater risk than a bond investment,” the SEC said. Both funds used “significant amounts of leverage” and were classified in an internal Citigroup rating system as having “significant risk to principal.” “That rating, however, was not shared with the majority of investors and financial advisors,” the SEC said. The SEC criticized Citigroup for poorly overseeing fund management staff to ensure communications were “accurate and not misleading.” The order also faulted fund employees for dishonest statements about the funds’ financial condition when they came under strain in 2007. “Advisers at these Citigroup affiliates were supposed to be looking out for investors’ best interests, but falsely assured them they were making safe investments even when the funds were on the brink of disaster,” said Andrew Ceresney, director for the SEC’s enforcement division. Citigroup said through a spokesman that the bank is “pleased to have resolved this matter.” Representative picture Toyota factory lines shut in Tianjin, workers injured Tokyo oyota yesterday said more than 50 employees were injured after two giant explosions last week in the Chinese city of Tianjin, where the carmaker’s factory lines will remain closed until at least the T end of Wednesday. Production at Toyota’s Tianjin subsidiary -- including a factory line 70 kilometres (44 miles) away that depends on parts from the main operation -- was halted due to evacuations from the city, Toyota said. This photo taken on August 16, 2015 shows rescue vehicles behind rows of burnt out cars at the site of the explosions in Tianjin. When the accident happened, Toyota’s operations had been shut for a week’s summer holiday, with production due to restart Sunday, so there was no immediate impact on production from the disaster. The main Tianjin factory, which produces several models including the Corolla and Vios sedan, has about 12,000 employees and manufactured 440,000 vehicles last year. The deadly blast also damaged a pair of Toyota dealerships that required them to temporarily close, while some other Japanese firms including Panasonic and carmaker Mazda reported minor damage at their operations in Tianjin. “We have now heard that over 50 employees who live in the surrounding area...have been injured, but we are still verifying the details regarding the number of employees injured and the extent of the injuries,” a Toyota spokesman in Tokyo said. ArthVeda launches US$250m realty fund DT News Network Manama rthVeda Fund Management, an asset management firm, yesterday launched a US$250 million real estate fund offering GCC investors an opportunity to develop mid-income residential properties in India. STAR Fund II, according to the company, is the first realty fund to be offered in Gulf and other overseas markets, following the recent amendments to India’s FDI policy in the realty segment. “The mid-income residential segment in India is considered to be the sweet spot offering lower risks and high returns in a relatively short fund life. Thanks A to huge demand and absorption of mid-income property across India, investments in this segment have low cyclicity and low average investment ticket size – exactly the opposite of premium residential real estate – and that makes STAR Fund II a prudent and growth-oriented investment opportunity for global investors,” said Bikram Sen, Chief Executive Officer of ArthVeda STAR Fund II has projected an IRR of 18-21 per cent in dollar terms with maximum fund tenure of 60 months. The fund would make 35-40 investment across 11 cities in India like Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Coimbatore, Jaipur, etc… The fund will have two closures, the first one three months after the launch or upon reaching an investment milestone of US$ 100 million, whichever is early. The second and final closure will be six months from the first closure or upon total commitments to the tune of US$250 million, whichever is early. The fund targeted at institutions, large corporate houses, sovereign wealth funds, family houses and High Net worth Individuals (HNI) in the GCC and other foreign markets has a minimum investment size of USD 500,000.00. “We can confirm that no deaths have been reported.” As for the “impact on imports and exports to and from Tianjin, we are still assessing the situation,” he added. The spokesman said the 50 injured were either Toyota employees or Toyota-related personnel. Consumer electronics giant Panasonic said there was minor damage to its plant in the industrial city and that it was halting operations Monday for safety checks. The industrial zone of Tianjin, one of China’s biggest cities with a population of 15 million people, hosts car plants, aircraft assembly lines, oil refineries and other service and production facilities. Pro-government and rebel forces have for months fought over Taez, seen as crucial gateway to the rebel-held capital Sanaa. But clashes in the city have intensified in recent days after pro-government forces made sweeping territorial gains against the Iran-backed rebels in southern Yemen. Sources in the city said that the bodies of 50 rebels and allied fighters were recovered from Taez Monday and that 31 progovernment fighters had been killed. H Backed by air strikes from a Saudi-led coalition, the loyalists have been pushing hard to take Taez, seizing several strategic locations on Sunday. Coalition strikes continued to hit rebel positions in the city yesterday, witnesses said, as well as in other Yemeni provinces. On Sunday the loyalists seized sites, including the local intelligence headquarters, a fortress from which the rebels had been shelling Taez and the highest peak overlooking the city, according to Rashad al Sharaabi, spokesman of the progovernment militia there. Military sources in Taez reported fierce fighting using heavy weaponry around the rebel-held presidential palace and the city’s airport. Sergeants Ali al Ghazwani and Sarwi Al Saeed were “martyred while carrying out their duty in protecting the country’s borders from rebel aggressors” on Sunday, the official SPA said, quoting a statement by the Saudi-led coalition. They were killed in the Jazan district bordering Yemen, it added without giving details. T Loyalist and rebel forces have fought over Taez for several days east but rebels still controlled entrances to Taez, including its eastern gate to Sanaa. Heavy fighting also took place in a town on the northern gate of Taez, witnesses said. The town is a stronghold for troops loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh - a key backer of the Shia Huthi rebels. Other clashes also raged in the oil-rich eastern province of Marib as well as Baida in central Yemen, residents reported. Jayapura n Indonesian passenger plane that crashed at the weekend in Papua was transporting about 6.5 billion rupiah ($470,000) in cash to distribute to poor families in the eastern province, a post office official said yesterday. “Four of our personnel were escorting the funds,” said Haryono, the head of Jayapura post office, who goes by one name. The money was in four bags, he added. Meanwhile, bad weather hampered efforts yesterday to reach debris in remote eastern Indonesian mountains believed to be from the plane that crashed carrying 54 people. More than 250 rescuers had tried to battle through dense forest to reach what is thought to be the wreckage of the Trigana Air plane, which disappeared on Sunday during A Passengers’ relatives have been waiting for news at Setani Airport in Jayapura a short flight in Papua province. The ATR 42-300 twinturboprop plane was carrying 49 passengers and five crew on the journey from Papua’s capital Jayapura to Oksibil, a remote settlement in the mountains to the south. The plane disappeared about 10 minutes before reaching its destination, soon after the crew requested permission to start descending in heavy cloud to land. It is just the latest air accident in Indonesia, which has a poor aviation safety record and has suffered major disasters in recent months, including the crash of an AirAsia plane in December with the loss of 162 lives. A plane yesterday spotted debris engulfed in smoke in the mountains near Oksibil and search teams, including soldiers and police, set off in the early hours to reach the site, which is at an altitude of 8,300 feet (2,500 metres). But thick fog, which reduced visibility to one metre (three feet), and rain hindered the bid to reach the crash site, the head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency Bambang Soelistyo said. Efforts to reach the location, about 15 kilometres (nine miles) from Oksibil, were called off for the day at 5:30 pm (0830 GMT) and would resume Tuesday, he added. 80-yr-old woman bungee jumps off 190m bridge spectacular natural views all around. Cairo nder pressure from a jihadist insurgency, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al Sisi has boosted police and judicial powers with a new anti-terrorism law that also imposes hefty fines for “false” media reports. Rights groups, which have accused Sisi of imposing a repressive regime since the army ousted president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, fear the new law could be used to further muzzle dissent and target critics. Sisi ratified the law on Sunday, as the country faces a growing wave of deadly attacks on security forces and civilians, led by the Egyptian branch of the Islamic State group. The government sped up the passage of the law after state prosecutor Hisham Barakat was assassinated in a car bombing in June, followed by a large-scale jihadist attack in the Sinai Peninsula days later. Indian PM Modi addresses 50,000 Indians in Dubai Dubai ndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday addressed the Indian diaspora at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. About 50,000 Indian expatriates had registered for ‘Marhaba Namo’ — a grand public reception held for the visiting Prime Minister. Braving high temperatures and humidity, they filled the stadium waving Indian flags as their premier gave a speech in Hindi, drawing loud applause. “You are the people who have worked hard... some for 10 years, some for 20 years and some for 30 years. You are not only earning your living, but also making India proud,” Modi told the crowd. “Even if it rains a I little more in India, then the Indian living in Dubai, opens his umbrella. In times of natural disaster, the Indian in Dubai can’t sleep properly,” he said of their response to catastrophes at home, quoted by UAE media. Pitching for a “decisive battle” against terrorism, Modi asked countries to choose if they are with sponsors of the menace or against them as he underlined that dialogue is the only way to resolve all issues with neighbours. “We (India and the UAE) have spoken in one voice against terrorism,” Modi said. He added, “Those who can understand will understand ... We are victims of terrorism for 40 years. Many innocent people have lost their lives.” “Those who indulge in terrorism must be punished. That is the message resonating here today,” he said and emphasised that gone were the days when a nomenclature of good and bad terrorism would be accepted. “Good terrorist, bad terrorist, good Taliban, bad Taliban, this won’t work. A decision has to be taken: are you with terrorism or humanity?” Modi said that India wants good relations with all neighbouring countries. Thousands of others watched on giant screens outside the Dubai Cricket Stadium in the economic hub of the United Arab Emirates, where Indians, many of them labourers, account for about 30 per cent of the eight-million population. Modi is the first Indian premier to visit the UAE in more than three decades. The late Indira Gandhi travelled to the Emirates in 1981. During a two-day visit, he met with Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan, crown prince of oil-rich Abu Dhabi. Modi also told a gathering of Emirati businessmen of the potential for $1,000 billion worth of investments in India, with its massive infrastructure projects, in the agricultural sector and in housing. The premier said he would despatch India’s commerce minister to discuss any problems faced by UAE investors in his country. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivers a speech SPORTS Tuesday, August 18, 2015 Preview MAN UNITED SET TO START AFRESH Manchester he Champions League theme music will boom out over Old Trafford again today when Manchester United return to the competition against Belgian side Club Brugge in the play-off round. After a first season out of the competition in 19 years, United have been led back by Louis van Gaal, who won the Champions League with a brilliant, young Ajax team in 1995 and took Bayern Munich to the final in 2010. Fourth in the Premier League last season, United have opened the new campaign with 1-0 wins over Tottenham T Hotspur and Aston Villa, and Juan Mata believes Friday’s victory at Villa Park showed the team’s readiness. “I think we can improve, but six points from six points is a very good start for us and now we have a lot of confidence ahead of the Champions League play-off,” the Spanish midfielder told MUTV. “The clean sheet is a very positive factor. We’re talking about having new players at the back and they’re doing great as well.” It is a year and four months since United last played in the Champions League, losing to Bayern in the quarter-finals in April 2014, and it says much about the profound change the club has undergone since then that only four of the players who played in the 3-1 second-leg defeat in Munich are likely to line up against Club Brugge. Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Darren Fletcher, Shinji Kagawa and Danny Welbeck have left the club, while David Moyes is no longer in the dug-out, having been sacked 13 days later. Of those who made it onto the pitch against Bayern that remain, Phil Jones is currently sidelined with thrombosis, Antonio Valencia and Javier Hernandez are out of favour and goalkeeper David de Gea has been removed from the team after becoming unsettled by Real Madrid’s interest. That leaves Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling, Michael Carrick and Adnan Januzaj, a late substitute at the Allianz Arena, who came in from the cold to score the winner at Villa after disappearing from view in Van Gaal’s first season. Januzaj is one of two Belgian players in Van Gaal’s squad alongside Marouane Fellaini, who is serving a three-match domestic suspension but could feature today. Billionaire Chung slams Blatter, Platini at FIFA campaign launch Chung Mong-Joon Paris outh Korean billionaire Chung Mong-Joon yesterday launched his campaign for the FIFA presidency with a blistering S attack on outgoing leader Sepp Blatter and his rival to head football’s world governing body, Michel Platini. Chung, who said that Platini is too close to Blatter’s legacy and the ills that have hit FIFA, vowed to clean up the scandal-tainted body in one four-year term and then stand down. The election campaign, however, is becoming increasingly bitter. “Today FIFA is undergoing a profound crisis. Under these circumstances, the FIFA president must be a crisis manager and a reformer,” the 63-year-old Chung, a former FIFA vice president, told a Paris press conference. “The problem at FIFA is that those mired in corruption, the only thing they are interested in is hiding the corruption,,” he added. “The real reason FIFA has become such a corrupt organisation is because the same person (Blatter) has been running it for 40 years. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” FIFA has been embroiled in corruption turmoil since 14 FIFA and sports business executives were charged by US authorities in May over more than $150 million in bribes allegedly paid for television and marketing deals. Seven FIFA officials have been detained but Blatter has not been linked to any corruption case. Chung, a member of the family that owns the Hyundai conglomerate, vowed that if successful in the election on February 26, 2016, he would serve just one term. “I can change FIFA in four years. That is my pledge to football fans in the world.” Manchester United players during the Premier League Bahrain Endurance digs deep for weekend podiums DT News Network Manama ames Cunnama and Paul Ambrose both dug deep on the run to get onto the podium at Embrunman and Ironman Mont Tremblant, respectively. Dhawan, who hit a century in the first innings at Galle, will miss both the second Test starting at I the P. He would require four to six weeks to recover from the injury,” a statement from the team management said. Team director Ravi Shastri said it was “unfortunate” to lose the in-form left-hander for the key Tests ahead. “Shikhar showed a lot of courage at Galle,” Shastri said. “That’s what I look for in a player. It is unfortunate to lose him.” No replacement has been named. The injury to Dhawan left India in a spot of bother after the other opening batsman, Lokesh Rahul, was dismissed for seven and five in Galle. First-choice opener Murali Vijay missed the Galle Test with a hamstring injury but is expected to recover in time for the second match. Top-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara is waiting in the wings, while India had already summoned all-rounder Stuart Binny to join the squad as the 16th member before Dhawan’s non-availability was confirmed. SPORTS Tuesday, August 18, 2015 31 Andrew Gibney profiles a dozen young players who might find first-team opportunities limited again this term... Jonas Hofmann (Borussia Dortmund) Tom Carroll (Tottenham) Over the past few seasons, Tottenham have gone through their fair share of central midfielders – yet still the 23-year-old Carroll has scarcely featured. The creative Carroll has been with Spurs since he was a schoolboy, but has played only 23 times for the Lilywhites and turned out for four different clubs on loan since the 2010/11 campaign (including Leyton Orient, Derby and QPR). After his spell at Swansea last time out (where still first-team football wasn’t a given), Carroll will be hoping to push his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s thoughts. Benjamin Stambouli’s departure will give him hope, but he still has Ryan Mason, Mousa Dembele, Nabil Bentaleb and now Dele Alli to displace – not to mention the two weeks remaining in the transfer window. All signs point towards another season of angst. Marc Bartra (Barcelona) Under Jurgen Klopp, 23-year-old German winger Hofmann only featured in two Bundesliga games last season, leading to a loan deal with Mainz which was ruined by a knee injury. It’s expected that he will play more with Thomas Tuchel in charge, which he has done so far with three appearances in cup competitions. But with Kevin Kampl, Marco Reus, Jakub Blaszczykowski and Kevin Grosskreutz also vying for contention out wide, it seems like now or never for the 23-year-old to make his mark at the Westfalenstadion. Born and bred in Barcelona, Bartra has been part of the Blaugrana setup since he was 11 years old. From Carles Puyol and Gabriel Milito, to Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano – the centre-back has seen them all, and now aged 24 is still waiting for a proper run in the club’s starting XI. His appearance numbers actually dropped by six games last season, and even with Barça’s transfer embargo his minutes don’t look like improving this time either. When midfielders are being picked in front of you, at some point you need to think about your future. Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid) In his second full season with Real Madrid after returning from Bayer Leverkusen, Spanish right-back Carvajal cemented his place in the first team, featuring in 30 league games for Los Blancos last term and five in the Champions League. The 23-year-old has impressed with his ability to play at both ends of the pitch, proving himself a capable tackler and willing runner in attack. But despite signing a new deal to 2020, Carvajal will now compete with Brazilian right-back Danilo – a €31.5 million summer arrival from Porto – for a place in Rafa Benitez’s team. It’s hard to believe that the 24-year-old has left Portugal for a backup role. Bertrand Traore (Chelsea) Two loan spells at Vitesse Arnhem saw Blues youngster Traore score 17 goals for the Dutch club. This season he’s been cleared to play for Chelsea – handed the No.14 shirt at Stamford Bridge – but it’s hard to see where the Burkina Faso international will actually fit in. Jose Mourinho can call on PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard, Willian, Jose Cuadrado and even Victor Moses in the forward roles, while highly rated new Brazilian signing Kenedy has now secured a work permit to play. Even without his fellow youngster to compete with, there seems an awful lot of competition for the exciting 19-year-old. WAITING FOR P31 A KICK-OFF 32 24 Tuesday, August 18, 2015 SPORTS Liverpool-1, Bournemouth-0 Liverpool hristian Benteke scored a contentious first Liverpool goal as his team shaded promoted Bournemouth 1-0 at Anfield yesterday to claim their second victory of the Premier League season. The teams’ first ever league meeting was settled by £32.5 million ($50.8m, 45.8m euros) striker Benteke’s 26th-minute strike in front of the Kop, but Bournemouth felt that in attempting to play the ball before it reached his teammate, Philippe Coutinho had been offside. C Having previously won 1-0 at Stoke City in their opening game, Brendan Rodgers’s Liverpool moved level on points with Manchester City, Leicester City and Manchester United at the top of the twogame table. As well as Benteke, who later hit the crossbar, Rodgers also gave home debuts to Nathaniel Clyne, James Milner, Joe Gomez and substitute Roberto Firmino, but lost new captain Jordan Henderson to injury early in the second half. Bournemouth have lost both of their first games, but manager Eddie Howe will have been heartened by the pluck and enterprise shown by his side, who struck the post through the tireless Matt Ritchie in the second period. The last time Bournemouth had played at Anfield, in an FA Cup replay in January 1968, it was under the banner of Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic, but they were quick to make themselves at home. It was the away fans who made all the noise in the early stages and in the fifth minute they thought they had a first ever top-flight goal to celebrate, only for captain Tommy Elphick’s header to be ruled out after he used Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren for leverage. Playing with a new directness first seen at Stoke on the opening weekend, and with an unchanged team, Liverpool looked to hit Benteke at the earliest opportunity. The former Aston Villa hitman struggled to make the ball stick, but after lashing wide from the edge of the box, he opened his Liverpool account by stabbing Henderson’s leftwing cross home from close range at the back post. Liverpool penalty claim The goal, however, should not have stood. Coutinho made a clear attempt to play the ball in front of visiting goalkeeper Artur Boruc and according to new guidance on the offside rule recently introduced by rulemaking body the International Football Association Board, the Brazilian was offside. For Bournemouth, the goal had the doubly unfortunate effect of galvanising their hosts, who finished the half with a flourish. Henderson, Steven Gerrard’s successor as skipper, grazed the bar with an improvised shot from distance and was then unfortunate not to win a penalty for a barge by Max-Alain Gradel, while Coutinho curled a loose ball wastefully wide. Ritchie sought to sound the revolt for Bournemouth with a couple of potshots early in the second half, but although Liverpool lost Henderson to injury, with Emre Can taking his place, they continued to threaten, Milner scuffing wide from Jordon Ibe’s drilled cross.
