Play this game, get scary wholeheartedly Mohammed Zafran/DTNN zafran@dt.bh Manama n a mammoth step in the world of game designing, a Bahraini youngster has created a horror game that defies all conventional standards. Information and Communication Technology student Mahmood Saeed Saleem Al Sarhani’s ‘Conscious Heart’ alters the gameplay by reading the player’s heart beat rate. “Using Virtual Reality and Biofeedback technologies to read biological responses, the game turns more scary and challenging as the player’s heart beat rises,” Al Sarhani explained. According to him, the game is the only 3D Virtual Reality Biofeedback-dependent horror game that has ever been made. “The game is likely to give the players an interesting and unique experience,” he said. “The game increases the player’s awareness of their body’s biological I responses while delivering an immersive and unique challenging experience. The more afraid you are, the scarier it becomes. The game continuously monitors your heart rate and adapts accordingly,” he said. Citing an example, he said, “When the player is calm, all lights appear normal. But when you panic, the lights start to flicker. There are many more such complex effects in the game,” he elaborated. His research on virtual reality and bio-dependent technologies inspired him to make the game. “I am very interested in both the technologies and I noticed no games have so far been developed integrating both of them. And through discussions and brainstorming, I developed the idea to what it is right now,” he commented. To him, the Mahmood Saeed Saleem Al Sarhani A view of main menu next step was to conceive his idea into a game, which he says was no easy task either. “I borrowed some equipment from my University (Bahrain Polytechnic) and purchased some others. I used a game engine called Unity and an IDE (Internal Development Environment) called Visual Studio to establish the communication between the different devices,” he added. Al Sarhani believes that his game will be loved, simply because it is unique. “As far as I have researched, no other games use both Virtual Reality and Biofeedback technologies together. The closest I would say is a game called Nevermind that uses Biofeedback in a similar manner. The major differences is that my game is more immersive with the use of Virtual Reality,” he said. He is currently researching psychology, advanced technology and other aspects involved in the game to enhance it. “The game will serve two types of people - enthusiastic gamers, who want to have a new experience and the other, people who suffer from stress-related issues, trying to control their emotions well. It will serve as a means of entertainment, that also helps them control the problem through self-teaching,” he remarked. Al Sarhani has big plans for the future, to improve his game and also to make more such games. 5 RED CARPET FOR RUSSIAN COS TO EXPLORE OIL FIELDS Friday, September 18, 2015 There will be an open tender bid for the Russian firms: Al Saati Muhammad Azam/DTNN Manama ussian companies will soon be invited to explore oil and gas fields in the Kingdom of Bahrain, said Former MP and Ambassador Designate to Russia Ahmed Al Saati. Instead of meandering markets echoing with the sound of haggling, huge shopping malls boast multiple floors of retail space, enormous underground parking lots and children’s play zones. Developers have broken ground on an estimated 400 modern shopping malls across Iran in recent years -- 65 of them in Tehran alone. They have transformed the shopping habits of many Iranians, but now an even bigger change seems on the way after the country’s nuclear deal with world powers. Experts say the expected lifting of sanctions imposed over Iran’s disputed n u c l e a r programme will open the door to a potential retail bonanza, especially for imported Western goods. “Iran has a well-educated population with an T unquenched thirst for foreignbranded consumer goods,” PricewaterhouseCoopers said in a report earlier this year, highlighting the buying potential of the country’s youthful population. “People are looking for variety and want more choices,” said Mohammad Gholi Yousefi, an economics professor at Allameh Tabatabai University in Tehran. “When the sanctions are lifted and more investors enter the market, Iran is expected to become the commercial centre of the region,” he said. Even before the lifting of sanctions, Iranians have been embracing shopping centres like the Palladium Mall in Zaferanieh, one of Tehran’s most upmarket neighbourhoods. ‘To another level’ Besides 11 floors of retail space and 1,000 underground parking spots it boasts a food court and restaurant where patrons relax by gazing at the scenic snow-capped Alborz mountains to the north of Tehran. “Because there are so many shops, you have more options and the goods are more up-todate and fashionable,” said Paria Goudarzi, 19, dressed in a chic white coat outside Palladium. “Today, we came to eat at the food court. You can park your car comfortably and have great food,” she said. “I hope the situation will be even better after sanctions.” S a m Kamalvand, a civil engineer shopping at the Palladium, said he was looking forward to having more options once sanctions are lifted. “If sanctions go, and more brands come, definitely the shopping will rise to another level here,” he said. While Iran has not released recent figures on consumer spending, many An Apple outlet Iranians have the disposable at an Iran mall income to shop and malls are considered profitable. With sanctions making investments in other areas difficult, many of the country’s biggest investors including banks have turned to shopping malls, Yousefi said. “The banks used to put people’s investments in housing projects, but with stagnation in that sector, they turned to malls which are still profitable,” he said. Two Iranian shopping centres -- one in the central city of Isfahan and another in the southern city of Shiraz -- rank among the 10 largest in the world in terms of sales area, behind giant malls in China but ahead of those in Dubai, according to a ranking published in August by magazine Business Benchmark Middle East. The only thing missing has been the plethora of Western brands much-desired in the country of 78 million despite historic tensions with the West. Such goods are available but must be smuggled in through middlemen in places like Turkey or Dubai so are sold at vastly inflated prices. Iranian businessmen like Majid Lak -- whose Caspian Mode Group represents brands including Turkish apparel-maker LC Waikiki and Italy’s Benetton -- see big opportunities if Iran’s trade barriers come down. More choice, more support “Because of the sanctions there are numerous top fashion Isafan City Center mall in Iran companies in the world, many of which are either American or have a large American market, that won’t deal with us,” said Lak, sitting at an elaborate wooden desk and surrounded by energetic young aides. “We still want to connect to the world.” Saeid Baghayi is a 24-year-old electronics seller at another major shopping centre that opened this year in Tehran called Charsou. He said the lifting of sanctions will do more than just lower prices for electronics. “We source our products through the networks we have known in recent years, some of them official and some of them not,” Baghayi said. But “we really do face problems,” he added. “Spare parts get here with a lot of difficulty and at high prices.” Shoppers at Charsou, like 24-year-old fashion photographer Mohammad Metri, said they were looking forward to having more choice and better support for the products they buy. “I choose this mall for the variety of products and better support these big shops provide. I think after the removal of trade obstacles, the quality of services would be even better,” Metri said. 12 Friday, September 18, 2015 Energy Minister Dr. Abdulhussain bin Ali Mirza received yesterday the US Ambassador to Bahrain, William Roebuck. The I am doing things that ar m with is being only thing I have a proble labelled -Johnny Depp Los Angeles M att Damon has apologised after his remarks about diversity in film-making caused widespread outrage on Twitter. “My comments were part of a much broader conversation about diversity in Hollywood and the fundamental nature of Project Greenlight which did not make the show,” he said, in a statement on Wednesday. “I am sorry that they offended some people, but, at the very least, I am happy that they started a conversation about diversity in Hollywood.” At last Sunday’s premiere for Project Greenlight which sees Damon, Ben Affleck and fellow panellists offer first-time filmmakers the chance to direct a feature film - Damon had a heated discussion with a fellow panellist, black producer Effie Brown, after she queried the choices of an all-white creative team in respect of a black character. Damon repeatedly interrupted Brown and talked over her: “When we’re talking about diversity, you do it in the casting of the film, not in the casting of the show,” Damon said. To which Brown responded: “Wow.” Stockholm E llie Goulding dropped into Radio 1 this morning to premiere her new single, On My Mind. The first track from her third album, Delirium, it was co-written and produced in Sweden by pop overlord Max Martin (Britney Spears’ ...Baby One More Time, Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off). It’s a stuttering, dynamic piece of chart pop - powered by a staccato guitar riff and a multilayered vocal from Goulding. But it’s also, quite clearly, a response to Ed Sheeran’s hit single, Don’t. Don’t, you may remember, was about Ed’s relationship with Ellie, and how she (allegedly) left him for One Direction’s Niall Horan, while they were all staying in the same hotel. It sounds like this. Ellie’s song is also set in a hotel, where an unnamed suitor is making grand declarations of love. She, however, isn’t impressed. “You wanted my heart, but I just liked your tattoos,” she sings - although she later confesses: “I could have really liked you.” So far, the pop star hasn’t revealed who the song is about... but we’re looking forward to hearing Niall Horan’s version of events on the next One Direction record. He cares about Bulger and convinces him to slip the feds valuable information that can help make the town almost crime-free. Connolly plays a key part in that he manages the uneasy link involving the secret deal between Bulger and the FBI. The deal is double-edged as Connolly knows that they are indirectly making Bulger more powerful and in a way, doing his dirty work for him by eliminating his rivals, legally of course. Connolly keeps placating his boss McGuire (Kevin Bacon), who grudgingly accepts this slightly dubious witness protection arrangement. Bulger can do whatever he likes, but there is an extent to which Connolly can protect him. Easier said than done though, for Bulger gets progressively bolder with his activities as his rivals are taken off the streets. In his career thus far, Johnny Depp has essayed a wide variety of characters ranging from the sublime to the bizarre, with consummate ease. However, as Whitey Bulger, he is in a word, mesmerizing. The level of immersion he has achieved in playing Bulger (aided in a big way by painstakinglycreated facial prosthetics) is near-flawless. You’ll forget that it is Depp who is onscreen. And Edgerton (recently seen in The Gift that he starred in, wrote and directed) just seems to get better with every consecutive movie role. One of the two attacks struck close to the entrance of a marketplace near Tayaran Square. Most of the victims were civilians but at least one policeman was among the dead. The other hit the central Wathba Square, outside B government offices where retired people were queueing to collect their pensions. Police said the bombings took place less than 25 minutes apart. IS, which overran swathes of Iraq in June 2014, claimed the bombings in an online statement. The jihadist group said the attacks were carried out by two suicide bombers, whom it did not identify. Both Tayran and Wathba squares are in mixed Sunni-Shia neighbourhoods, and the motive for the bombings was not clear. IS frequently targets Iraq’s majority Shias, whom it considers heretics, fuelling sectarian tensions in the country, and often strikes areas such as markets and cafes where crowds gather. The last major bombing in Baghdad was more than a month ago. On August 15, a car bomb in a Shia-majority area of north Baghdad where people gather to buy and sell vehicles killed 11 people and wounded at least 68. That blast hit Sadr City, the same district where a massive truck bomb ripped through a wholesale vegetable market just two days before, killing at least 54 people. Iraqi forces backed by a US-led coalition and Iran have regained significant ground from IS north of Baghdad, but much of the country’s west remains outside government control. British airstrikes kill 330 IS fighters BLOW TO TERROR UK’s Tornado assault aircrafts in action (File) London ritish air strikes in Iraq have killed around 330 Islamic State (IS) group fighters since they began in September 2014, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said in a statement yesterday. “The estimated number of IS fighters killed as a result of UK strikes from September 2014 to August 31, 2015 is around 330,” the minister said, in response to a question from Green Party MP Caroline Lucas. “We do not believe B No Stain there have been any civilian casualties as a result of UK strike activity,” he added in the reply, which was published on parliament’s official website. Britain currently has eight Tornado GR4 fighters and several Reaper drones conducting strikes, as well as a Sentinel and an Airseeker -both surveillance craft. Fallon confirmed in August that Britain had carried out more than 250 airstrikes in Iraq. The Democratic presidential frontrunner described Donald Trump’s campaign -- that of a billionaire businessman with no political experience, a penchant for a loose, nasty tongue and no specific policy agenda -- as nothing short of stunning as he leads the H crowded Republican field by a healthy margin, leaving traditional pundits flummoxed. Clinton, appearing on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, was asked by the host how long she thought Trump would last in the long campaign leading to the US presidential election in November 2016. “Well, look, I think that he’s going to go as long as he wants to go,” Clinton said. “And so, he’s making the most out of it. The country joined others in the region, including Cuba, Chile, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru, which have ended similar restrictions in recent years. The announcement represents a second reprieve for the squadron of ageing Tornado GR4 fighter bombers currently based in Cyprus which was due to be disbanded first this year and then next, and will now be kept on. “We want to ensure we maintain this crucial operational tempo and so we will extend the lifetime of Number 12 Squadron for a further year to March 2017,” Fallon told the BBC during a visit to Baghdad last year. The Tornado jets are carrying out airstrikes, reconnaissance and surveillance over Iraq as part of US-led operations. Britain is not currently taking part in airstrikes on targets in Syria, although it was announced last week that a Royal Air Force (RAF) drone over the country had killed a British jihadist planning attacks on Britain. In 2013, Prime Minister David Cameron’s plan to join international military action in Syria was defeated by the House of Commons due to opposition from the Labour party. Prime Minister David Cameron is now mulling a second vote to gain support for Syria strikes this year. He hopes the new Labour chief could give him the support needed to get the move through the House of Commons, where he has a majority of only 12. Parliament approved the Iraq air strikes last September. An Iraqi policeman displays the heavily damaged vest of a colleague who was killed in a suicide bomb attack perception that had led to the initial ban. “What we are doing today is scientifically and technically accurate,” he continued, and is “based on a medical approach that replaces that old concept of ‘risk groups.’” The policy change was made “in order to move toward a national blood system that is safe, caring and inclusive” Gollan had said in a statement Tuesday. You might wonder what the big deal is since what they’re arguing over matters seem rather silly. If you feel up to it, get your friends out of their emotional chaos and view the subject objectively. It might not calm them down, but you’ll have done something! LEO 20th July - 20th Aug Today you might find it necessary to turn down an invitation to a social event, and the host might for some reason seem offended. Your friend is probably overworked and apt to overreact to just about anything. Explain things to your friend and then propose that you get together at another time. That’s all you can do now. SAGITTARIUS 20th Nov - 20th Dec An call from someone who lives far away might catch you off guard today. In your mind, the person has no reason to be angry and is blowing things out of proportion. If they won’t listen to reason, say as calmly as you can that you’ll get in touch tomorrow. Let this person calm down before even trying to straighten things out. TAURUS 20th April - 20th May Someone may skip out on responsibilities today, causing extra tasks to fall to everyone else, including you. This might stir up some anger and it’s definitely going to cause stress. Delegate tasks. Put yours in order of urgency and then take them one at a time carefully. If the less important ones have to wait until tomorrow, so be it! VIRGO 20th Aug - 20th Sept Have you been doing a lot of walking lately? If so, your feet may be sore. This could affect your energy level considerably, not to mention your ability to get any work done. Concentrate on routine tasks that require little thought and can be done sitting down. Stay out of any squabbles! Relax in a hot bath tonight. CAPRICORN 20th Dec - 20th Jan Today you might spend a lot of time looking for a lost object. This item may only have sentimental value. This isn’t a good day to search. You’re in a rather frenzied state and could look right at it without seeing it. Wait until tomorrow to look. What you seek is probably nearby and just hidden in some way. GEMINI 20th May - 20th June If you’ve been planning to set off on a trip soon, make a list of what you need to do beforehand and check off each task as you complete it. Otherwise you might panic at the last minute because you’ve forgotten something important. Stay calm even if it seems impossible. You’re less likely to forget anything if you stay focused. LIBRA 20th Sep - 20th Oct An event could find a love partner paying a lot of attention to others. You might feel neglected, as though your friend is doing this to hurt you. That isn’t the case. Your partner is just trying to be sociable and doesn’t realize that it upsets you. Do some mingling. Your friend might have same reaction as you and come running! AQUARIUS 20th Jan - 20th Feb A minor, but trivial quarrel or separation could take place with a love partner. It’s likely to get your dander up to the point where you may never want to see this person again. Go for a brisk walk to clear your head, and view the situation more objectively. Then phone your friend and work it out. CANCER 20th June - 20th July You may have been worried about money lately. Today a family member could make an ‘unnecessary’ expenditure. Know that all may not be as it seems! If you look at the situation objectively, you may see that you aren’t in dire financial straits and the expenditure didn’t take that much out of the family coffers. SCORPIO 20th Oct - 20th Nov Do you sometimes go about things backward? Are you caught up in the rat race of trying to have more money with the idea that eventually you’ll earn the freedom to do what makes you happy? It actually works in reverse. You must first be who you are and take the actions in order to have what you really want. PISCES 20th Feb - 20th Mar Too much stress from work could have your nerves on edge. When someone makes an offhand remark, you might see insult where none is intended. Don’t get so jumpy that you imagine traitors everywhere. Work alone, and take a walk to clear your head. This will put you in a better frame of mind and a more relaxed space. 19 Friday, September 18 , 2015 CROSSWORD Across 1Just manages, with “out”; 5Jason’s craft; 9Memory unit; 13Italian bread?; 14One on slopes; 15Make; 16Taverns; 17” Mule Train” singer; 18Tatum’s dad; 19___ Fideles; 21Part of RSVP; 22Clublike weapon; 23Electrically charged particles; 25Biblical twin; 27Tree planting day; 31Make beloved; 35It’s a gas; 36Fencing weapon; 38Class of Indian society; 39Russert of “Meet the Press”; 40Way to cook; 42Rata___; 43Out of favor; 46Queue after Q; 47Wife of Shiva; 48Fortified feudal residence; 50Awful; 52Mahjongg piece; 54And others, briefly; 55Toiletries case; 58Bambi’s aunt; 60Fourth highest peak in the world; 64Excuse me; 65Worth; 67Aromatic fragrance; 68Boot bottom; 69Kett and James; 70Baseball family name; 71Very, in Versailles; 72At hand; 73Tears; Yesterday’s solution Down 1” East of Eden” director Kazan; 2Compassionate; 3Seagoing eagle; 4Official sitting; 5Wanted poster abbr.; 6Reformer Jacob; 7Bottled spirit; 8End of a threat; 9Group of islands in the Atlantic; 10Divine Secrets of the ___ Sisterhood; 11___ II (razor brand); 12Feminine ending; 14Thin; 20Craggy hill; 24Flavor; 26Mandela’s org.; 27Caper; 28Queen of Spain; 29Explosive weapons; 30Brewer’s need; 32Cornerstone abbr.; 33In any way; 34Knot again; 37Cosmetician Lauder; 41Shelled reptiles; 44Occasionally; 45Half of MCII; 47Unit of pressure; 49Cricket team; 51Cheering word; 53Related on the mother’s side; 55Bridge seat; 56Son of Odin; 57River to the Ubangi; 59Neighbor of Sask.; 61Anklebones; 62Sow chow; 63Big birds; 66Nasser’s org.; LIFE IS LIKE THAT ONLY DILBERT R BEETLE BAILEY S U D O KU R How to play: Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine. SPORTS Friday, September 18, 2015 Europa League Paris iverpool conceded a late equaliser as they began their Europa League campaign with a 1-1 draw at Bordeaux, while 10-man Celtic drew 2-2 away to Ajax yesterday. Back-to-back losses to West Ham and Manchester United in the English Premier League had increased the pressure on Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers but Adam Lallana’s sublime second-half goal in France looked destined to hand the Reds all three points in their Group B opener. The visitors were pegged back nine minutes from time though as substitute Jussie slammed a loose ball beyond Simon Mignolet to salvage a point for Bordeaux. Celtic also surrendered a late goal in Amsterdam after being forced to play out the final 15 minutes a man down following the dismissal of Emilio Izaguirre. Israeli midfielder Nir Biton silenced the home crowd with an eighthminute opener before Viktor Fischer hauled Ajax level on 25 minutes. But Honduran international Izaguirre was sent off for a second yellow after taking out Anwar El Ghazi and Lasse Schone earned Ajax a share of the spoils six minutes from the end. The late setback was all the more frustrating for Ronny Deila’s side as group favourites Fenerbahce crashed to a 3-1 defeat at home to Norwegian outfit Molde. Borussia Dortmund made it 10 straight wins under new coach Thomas Tuchel after the Bundesliga leaders came from behind to beat Russian outfit FC Krasnodar 2-1 in Group C. Dortmund, who came through two rounds of qualifying to reach the group phase, fell behind after just 12 minutes in Germany as Pavel Mamaev converted a Fedor Smolov cross. But Matthias Ginter equalised for the hosts right before half-time after heading in a cross from Park Joo-ho and the South Korean capped off his Dortmund debut in style with the winner three minutes into secondhalf stoppage time. (AFP) US Open match was a win, not a loss: Serena New York erena Williams says her recent US Open defeat was not a loss, but a win and a learning experience and that she’s happy for the opponent, Roberta Vinci, who derailed her quest for a Grand Slam. “We should be happy for each other, you know what I mean?“ Williams said in an interview Tuesday after presenting her second collection for her fashion line, the Serena Williams Signature Statement Collection for the HSN network, at a high-profile runway show that drew influential Vogue editor Anna Wintour and other fashion heavyweights, not to mention rapper Drake. “We gotta build up each other. We can’t be angry .“ “I mean, I won four Grand Slam (tournaments) in a row, and got to the semis in another one, and I’ve done that twice,“ Williams said. “I mean how many people have done that? So, yeah, it wasn’t a loss for me, it was a win and a learning experience. And I tried hard. Unfortunately the girl I played just outplayed me that day , you know ... She probably deserved it. And I am happy for her.“ Williams, who won last year’s US Open as well as the next three Grand Slam tournaments after that, also said designing was a great break from the pressure of her tennis career. “I love what I do obviously , but I also sometimes need a break from that and I love fashion,“ she said. “It’s something I have a passion for.“ Not that there wasn’t also pressure coming from the fashion world.
