Special Edition
Weekly Planner 2014
For our people the church is a sacred place,
in which they worship God on Sundays and other feast days; they find solace and peace of mind
in their hours of suffering; they send up their
gratitude to the Lord in their days of joy; they
sanctify the most important and unique moments of their lives.
It was this reality that inspired Roger Tourte, French painter with a Greek soul (19031972), who, in a work of invaluable artistic, historic and national importance, depicted the
beauty and the light of the islands of the Aegean
with his incomparable talent and his rich palette
in watercolours (gouache). Through the grace of harmony and of chiaroscuro, and an inconceivable wealth of colours,
the Philhellene painter, who lived in Greece for 35 years, depicts ancient monuments, historical churches, out-of-theway countryside chapels and monasteries, traditional architectural elements.
Of all this work, which remained scattered, his creations on the islands of the Aegean are preserved in the Gennadius Library of Athens. The Apostoliki Diakonia of Greece, within the fram ework of its cultural activities, sought the
collaboration with the Gennadius Library with which it has published this unique present work in order to promote
Greek culture, Orthodox spirituality and the tradition of our people; because, if we have nothing to propose on the level
of culture, then this void will automatically be filled by the imported globalized subculture.
The work of Roger Tourte bears witness to the intertwining of art with the charismatic wealth of Theology, to the liaison between life and ethos; it connects the Eucharistic perception of life and the expectation of the Resurrection, indicates the integration of the creation in the mode of existence of the uncreated, and exalts the mode of transformation of
biological survival into a living relation of Christian love (agape) relationship. This is what culture is about!

Meet Us
The Apostoliki Diakonia was founded in 1936 and is under the supervision of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Greece. According to the Charter of the Church of Greece, it attends to the planning, organisation and implementation of the missionary, catechetic,
educational, cultural and publishing work of the Church.
The Church has never separated its Truth from its life. Every single phase of ecclesiastic life, whether administration, art, philanthropy or
monastic living, is a live manifestation of the overall Truth; they each reveal the Truth of the overall Church. The actual structures or forms
of expression of ecclesiastic life arose from the “function” of Eucharist assemblies and the implementation of this Truth by the faithful congregation. They were established as potential means of revealing this Truth, and not intended to serve any organizational expediencies.
The sole necessity that prompted structures or institutions, texts, dogmas and regulations within the Church, was the esoteric need to
manifest the Church as the body of Christ and to unite man with God. Thus, the operational hierarchy of every administrational structure
has always been in the service of this singular esoteric need, in the same way that the formality of worship, or hagiography, or temple architecture has served it.
The publications and other activities of the Apostoliki Diakonia are consequently serving this same need: they provide a description
(without this description actually exhausting or replacing the fullness of the Church’s life) of its caring, philanthropical stance towards
mankind, which stems from the victory over death, and Resurrection in Christ.
