The family owned company has a strong balance sheet with net assets in excess of £60 million ($90m) and no net debt. The board of the William Hare Group firmly believes that the company is well placed to take advantage of the recent economic recovery in both the UK and overseas markets, whilst also targeting operational improvements and efficiencies. 18 In the UK the Group is supported with bank facilities from Lloyds Banking Group, and surety facilities long-term from four of the largest providers, to a combined value in excess of £100 million ($150m). The businesses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai are supported by local bankers and insurers. These facilities assist the business in securing and performing on contracts of all sizes for its varied customer base. hare.com PROJECT MANAGEMENT William Hare’s project management teams have a depth of experience across all sectors and industries, and an intimate knowledge of the challenges of steel construction. Each project benefits from the appointment of a Project Sponsor at Director Level with ultimate authority for the delivery of the project. This provides the client with the comfort of a single point of contact. At all times the Project Sponsor will keep in mind the objectives from the client’s perspective. The family owned, hands-on managed nature of the business results in a strongly connected organisation and a high sense of ownership which is responsive to the client’s needs at all levels. The detail of each project is established with the preparation of a Project Execution Plan (PEP) by the assigned Project Team. The further review of this by multi-functional peer teams ensures that a robust plan is in place for each project right from the outset. All Project Managers work within a framework of detailed procedures with a strong process for change management, which nevertheless provides scope for individual free thought and the flexibility to respond to the specific needs of the client. The in-house Hare Data System (HDS) provides real time tracking at all key stages throughout the process. Continual monitoring of the actual status against the PEP ensures the successful delivery in terms of safety, programme, quality and cost every time. GLOBAL LEADER IN ENGINEERED STEEL SOLUTIONS 19 ENGINEERING DESIGN & DETAILING William Hare’s business approach is to work as part of an integrated Engineering Team with its clients. This, together with its ability to work with conceptual information, helps to ensure an optimum design solution with clarity and certainty of detail that greatly enhances efficiency, project delivery and cost certainty. It is with these objectives in mind that the Group sustains a technically excellent in-house engineering resource which is one of the largest engineering resources of any steel fabricator worldwide. Engineers can be deployed to any location in the world to facilitate face-to-face design development and information harvesting to overcome technical challenges. Formal model signoff meetings with all participants prior to commencing fabrication ensures full coordination with other parties / sub-trades, providing effective change management, avoiding unnecessary retrofit and mitigating the risk of delays or disputes down the line. The success of William Hare’s approach was ably demonstrated by the Air W1 (Quadrant 3) development in London. This complex refurbishment project of 3,000 tonnes was completed without a single clash occurring between the service holes and the M&E plant which is unprecedented for a project of this size. Overall the project was delivered four months early and 20% under budget, with Hare’s use of BIM technology being recognised as a major factor in this. The project was widely recognised, winning the both the 2013 Structural Steel Design Awards & Best Practice Award in the 2012 British Construction Industry Awards. Group engineering resources comprise over 350 technical staff spread across the four core operating centres of Bury, Abu Dhabi, Chennai and Manila. They provide a fully computerised design and detailing service that is directly linked to the production centres, providing a seamless transition from CAD to the shop floor. Key areas of technical expertise include the following: Care is always taken to value engineer all projects in conjunction with the client so as to expedite and manufacture them more efficiently in the best interests of the overall project. William Hare is a leading user of collaborative Building Information Modelling (BIM) techniques in which the steel frame is considered as a part of the whole construction scope. Invariably the client input model is used as the starting point, and effective use of modelling protocols ensures that the information can be fed back into the client master model. These capabilities have further extended to other areas of the business via the use of ‘4-D’ time-specific parameters which can be used to monitor the state of progress of both shop fabrication and site construction, with VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) being used to manage the interaction with other trades. 20 • • • • • • • • • Optimised structural solutions Primary frame analysis and design Steelwork connection calculations and specialist fabrication drawings 4-Dimensional structural modelling Clash detection and interface of other trades Engineering project management Fire engineering Cellular beam designs in cold and fire conditions Temporary works designs hare.com SUPPLY CHAIN The reputation of the William Hare Group is built upon its proven project delivery performance and inherent flexibility which ensures the company can respond to clients’ changing requirements. The company has a developed global supply chain which supports successful project delivery and execution worldwide. Preferred supplier agreements are in place for steel, bolts, paint and other major bought in items. The benefits to the client include security of supply, shorter lead times, improved cost performance and assured compliance with all quality, safety and environmental requirements. The in-house HDS system is fundamental to managing the supply chain, and systems have been integrated with those of key suppliers. Mutual investment and co-operation on new product development, together with the introduction of improved working practices, recognises that the company is not only in direct competition with other steel fabricators but that the steel industry as a whole must continue to innovate to remain competitive against other forms of construction. Some of the key partnerships that the company has entered into include: • Development of new paint products to provide more cost effective solutions for the fire protection of buildings • Further development of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to include sub-trades such as cladding and floor grating resulting in faster, error free delivery of these products • Development of off-site cutting of floor decking to speed up on-site activity and further reduce environmental impact and improve safety For large international projects, the company also embraces local supply initiatives. For example, during a project executed in West Africa, local fabricators benefited from the company’s support. Such arrangements represent a win-win for both the local community and the client who benefits from a local resource which is able to respond quickly to any changes to the project. GLOBAL LEADER IN ENGINEERED STEEL SOLUTIONS 21 PRODUCTION William Hare’s production facilities provide the very latest manufacturing technology for fast-flow production with more traditional fabrication skills. These capabilities allow the Group to offer anything from mass produced components at highly competitive rates to complex bespoke fabrications of extreme size, shape or weight. The production facilities make use of the latest plant equipment, including high speed drill lines, plasma cutters and automated layout marking PeddiWriters to efficiently produce each component with the minimum of human intervention. Plant is driven via Raptor software which reads its data directly from the Tekla 3D CAD model. This approach greatly streamlines the process flow in comparison to traditional approaches and ensures that revision control is more carefully managed. A system of bar codes is used to track all individual items through all stages of the production process. Full material traceability is offered as default for all projects regardless of the client’s specification requirements. This extends from the initial supply and allocation of material, and continues through all manufacturing processes to the final inspection of the completed steelwork. Records are maintained via the Workshop Operational System (WOS) module of HDS. All items are assembled to the highest quality levels by a workforce that has been fully trained in its respective areas of expertise. In the case of larger, more complex components, survey equipment linked to 3-D model provides the means to accurately complete each assembly via a virtual trial erection so that all items can be delivered to site with a high degree of confidence. All output produced by William Hare is certified to the highest levels of quality. In addition to its pre-existing ISO 9001 certification, the company was the first UK fabricator to achieve a certified Factory Production Control (FPC) system in line with BS EN 1090-1 for European CE Marking. Both UK and UAE regional centres can undertake projects in line with CE Marking Execution Class 4, ensuring they can deliver to the highest standards of fabrication as required for safety critical projects such as nuclear developments, stadiums or structures located in seismically active areas. 22 hare.com TREATMENT William Hare’s treatment facilities cater to the growing need in the market for specialist painting systems including intumescent fire retardant coatings, highly durable epoxy systems and decorative finishes for architecturally exposed elements. Led from the dedicated paint facility at Grantham, all William Hare paint facilities have been equipped with automatic roller conveyor shot blasting machines, supplemented by manual blasting facilities. The resulting quality of the shot blasted steel regularly exceeds the requirements of ISO 8501-1: 2007 standard SA 2½. William Hare are members of the Industrial Coatings Applicator Training Scheme (ICATS) and all William Hare painters are ICATS trained and certified. The company is also accredited to the National Highways Scheme Sector 19A. All operations are conducted under an Environmental Permit in which the company reports its ‘Mass Balance’ back to the local authority. Initiatives such as solvent reclaim from paint and thinners ensure that actual performance is driven below the target levels. All treatment specifications are reviewed both for technical compatibility and to minimise Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions to acceptable levels. GLOBAL LEADER IN ENGINEERED STEEL SOLUTIONS The range of coating systems applied varies from simple single coat primer systems to multi-coat systems involving different paint products. Conventional paint products are applied using the latest airless spray pumps that can apply high performance coatings to suit any environment. The application of intumescent coatings is done via twin post ram high pressure airless units. All treatment facilities include extensive laydown areas in which curing times between coats and/or final delivery can be closely managed. Final inspections are carried out by both William Hare QA staff and independent auditors. All facilities are equipped with the latest inspection and monitoring equipment to ensure that the necessary wet and dry film thicknesses have been achieved and that all finishes are of the required consistency, durability and visual appearance. In cases where the steel has to be galvanized, William Hare nominates a preferred galvanizing sub-contractor with a proven track record to undertake this work. Services can be further supplemented through the use of approved sub-contractors to include concrete encasement and the application of cementitious products. 23 CONSTRUCTION William Hare was originally founded in the 1880s as an erection company and has gained extensive experience in site construction all over the world. It has a core of directly employed site labour wholly allocated to erection activities, supplemented by specifically chosen and vetted specialist installation supply chain partners. Within the Construction Department, emphasis is placed on detailed planning of erection schedules and preparation of method statements and health and safety risk assessments.
