like a child again last fall in the halls of the Croatian Museum of Naive Art in Zagrab. I wanted to run home and begin painting. Here we
have 4th of July celebrations at Freedom Park, a zip-line experience,
New Year’s Eve parties at Jack Archibald’s, a Friday farmer’s market,
a near-by fly-in, a crazy rubber duck race down the Stilly, a soap box
derby, a bicycle hill climb, and openings at Karla Matzke’s Gallery.

animals and birds do we find in our yards? Camano Wildlife Habitat Project is offering an informal presentation about the common
animals & birds we find in our yards. A Discovery Pass or a Day Pass
is necessary. Many of the park’s bird mounts and nests plus animal
skulls and pelts will be on display. Two local naturalists will talk
about the displays. Weather permitting, a scope will be available
to observe shorebirds on the bay. This program is for both adults
and children and is part of a public education series hosted by the
Camano Wildlife Habitat Project, sponsored by Friends of Camano

Camano/Stanwood Area Birding Field Trip
8:30am - 3pm. Meet at the Stanwood QFC parking lot at 8:30 a.m.
Visit Camano Island & Stanwood hotspots (English Boom, Utsalady
boat ramp, Maple Grove, Iverson Spit and Eide Road). Habitats include extensive salt water, mudflats, marsh and beach, along with
shrubs, cropland, and forested hillsides. We’ll walk about a mile on
easy terrain. Expect to see a variety of waterfowl, seabirds, raptors
and passerines. Bring boots, lunch and liquids. Scopes are a plus.

the draft update to the Transportation Element of the Comprehensive
Plan. The Transportation Element is an assessment of the County’s current transportation system, as well as a guide for improving it over the

ensure that Island County can continue to have an exceptional transportation system in the future. An update to the Freeland sub-area’s Transportation Element is also being developed. Meeting locations and dates

meeting venue will open at 6:00 p.m. A presentation will start around

Area Historical
Society asks,
“Did You Know?”
This is a
continuing
history series.
The year of 1890 will undoubtedly stand as one of the most important years here. The coming of the railroad and the locations of
them - the Northern Pacific and Great Northern - was a very powerful factor in shaping our future.
The railroads arrived here a little later than the rest of the county,
but had no less an impact. There were rumors of railroads reaching
even Utsalady. A land company thought this so much a certainty,
it created maps of them. However, the mill at Utsalady closed in
December, 1890 so any hope of prosperity that the railroad might
bring to Camano was lost.
It was a Great Northern subsidiary, the Seattle & Montana R.R.,
that finally negotiated the connections and put together the track
from the Skagit River to Port Gardner. To the great dismay of Stanwood, which was located near the mouth of the river, the railroad
did not quite reach the town. Despite an alleged offer of $4,000
the railroad could not be convinced of the importance of putting
a track directly into Stanwood. The railroad had stops in Silvana,
Norman, and Milltown for milk, mail and passengers, but it built a
depot a mile east of Stanwood.
Near the depot there were a few houses, the remains of a lumber camp and a deep quagmire, water, and brush. An attempt was
made my D.O. Pearson and George Ketchum in 1892 to plat and
locate a town near this depot and establish a new road between it
and Stanwood; but this was during a depression and there was apparently not enough incentive at the time. The existing road was
described as a dust bowl in the summer and a bottomless mudhole
in the winter. In around 1894, a Mr. Rabel cut planks for making it
about 18 feet wide and was eventually graveled and then bricked.
When the spur from the depot that was talked of never materialized, merchants and farmers boycotted the railroad and began
to ship by steamer. In 1893, farmers banded together and bought
a steamer which they named the City of Stanwood. All went well
until January 1894 when the ship burned at the water’s edge of
Port Susan Bay. East Stanwood eventually began to be formed but
that did not solve Stanwood’s need for its own transportation to
the depot. As a result, Stanwood started the H & H street railway In
1904 that ran until the mill’s decline in the 1930’s.

GOT URINE?
I got a buddy who’s required to take a drug test before he’s hired
on as a consultant for an oil consortium. He worked ramrodding
the construction site for the same oil companies for decades up
at Prudeau Bay where part of his job was making sure the riggers
stayed drug and alcohol free through long days and longer nights.
Sorta like Wyatt Earp asking the cowboys to stick with Coca-Cola
Saturday nights, if they wouldn’t mind….
So now that he’s retired and going back for consulting, I guess the
Big Boyz are worried he’s fallen into decadence and drugs along
with the rest of us South Enders. The required test is given in Bothell so my pal dutifully makes an appointment, navigates the I-5
bumper car gauntlet, arrives with a full bladder of freshly filtered
latte which he desperately wants to unload ASAP, but, unsurprisingly, is told to wait. Short time later, long past that anguished outcry of a Guernsey with 10 gallons of unpasteurized backed up past
an udder while the farmer is out drinking with his Scandihoovien
reprobate buddies, the secretary comes in with the bad news that
the urinary nurse in charge of the drug testing doesn’t come in
on Fridays. Yah, shure, you guessed it --- it’s Friday. Can I leave you
the sample? he asks through clenched teeth, bent over in pain and
growing anger. And … well, sure, you guessed right again and no,
sir, that would be against the rules.

peeing his adult diapers and trying to come to grips with What Is
Wrong With This Picture? Do they suspect him of Viagra dependency? Do they merely want him to understand his real place in

All I can say is, my buddy must really want to avoid retirement to

This article will appear to be self-serving. It is not. (Trust me,
I’m a lawyer.) The State of Washington in its infinite wisdom determined that all people from any walk of life have a right to be
a lawyer. Now everyone has a right to act as their own attorney.
They do not need to hire an attorney and . . . they subsequently
have a “fool for a client” but that’s another story.
In an effort to aid the less than fortunate amongst us the State
has implemented forms to aid a person is obtaining a divorce, custody, support and virtually every other aspect of family law. When
you go to obtain those forms you are provided a two inch stack
of instructions referred to as a “manual.” In essence it attempts to
boil down the practice of divorce law so a layman can understand
it and allow that layman to go into court and become a lawyer
for his/her case. (I wish you the very best with that.) So I now
must sit in the courtroom and watch person after person appear
before the court with the wrong documents, or untimely filed
documents, or no documents at all or a myriad of other problems
which the Commissioner by law cannot help you with. It becomes
a nightmare for the courts, the public, the court staff and everyone
else associated with divorce law.
Here are a few tips to help you with your decision to go it alone
or get an attorney:
1. If you have a very short marriage, no kids, and no accumulated
community property, no issues of spousal maintenance, go for it.
You should be able to handle the process . . . maybe.
2. If you children and there are issues of child custody that you and
your spouse have NOT agreed upon, get a lawyer.
3. If you have issues about the amount of child support you should
receive or pay, get a lawyer.
4. Do you think you will need spousal maintenance, get a lawyer.
5. Are there potential issues of abuse? Get a good lawyer.
6. Are there issues as to who is the father or where the father is,
get an attorney.
The alternative is repeated trips to the courthouse, repeated trips
to the law library, repeated appearances before the Commissioner,
and the most grievous brain damage one could ever experience.

1. Get Active! It’s no secret that professional athletes are in top
shape. (Have you seen Maria Sharapova’s legs?) But did you know
that watching the pros do their thing can also be motivation to
get you up and moving? After watching the Olympic triathletes,
didn’t you feel inspired to swim, ride and run right along with
them? It’s true. Watching professional athletes at the top of their
game motivates us to pump up our workout routines and get to
the top of ours as well.
2. Watching Sports: A Sport in Itself. Even if watching your favorite
team duke it out doesn’t motivate you to hit the gym, it can still
help you shed some calories. Think about any given trip to your
local sports stadium or arena. Any large venue requires walking
up and down countless flights of stairs to your seat. Standing and
socializing is also a relaxed, low-impact means to shed some cals.
Can’t make it to the live show? Not a problem. You can burn a few
extra calories just by tuning in from your living room! Your heart
rate will accelerate at those tense moments and you’ll jump, cheer
and clap during the highlights – all without even trying! You just
have to make sure you aren’t eating all those calories back with
salty pretzels, goopy nachos or greasy pizza. If you need to nibble,
opt for a nutritious trail mix instead. Light beer is also a better option (in moderate amounts, of course).
3. Relationship-Building. Being a sports fan is all about coming
together as a community. Bonding over the highs and lows of a

Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death among
children between 1 and 4 years old. Age is one of the major risk
factors for drowning. This relationship is often associated with
a lapse in supervision. Globally, the highest drowning rates are
among children 1-4 years, followed by children 5-9 years. Each day
in the United States, nine people drown. Participation in formal
swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among
children ages 1-4.
Top Tips: 1. Never leave your children unattended around water.
We know it sounds strict, but there is no room for compromise on
this one. Babies can drown in as little as one inch of water. 2. Put
the cell phone away, forget about all the other things you have to
do and give young children 100 percent of your attention when
they are near or around water. 3. Empty all tubs, buckets, containers and wading pools immediately after use. Store them upside
down and out of children’s reach. 4. Keep toilet lids closed and use
toilet seat locks to prevent drowning. It’s also a good idea to keep
doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed. 5. Parents have a
million things to do, but learning CPR should be on the top of the
list. It will give you tremendous peace of mind – and the more
peace of mind you have as a parent, the better.

Just in Time – Family Stories
I love to visit my aunt, Mildred. She’s thrilled to see me although she’s
not sure who I am. Mildred has dementia. She lives in the moment.
A few years ago, I started interviewing Mildred. Dad was gone; only
his sister could tell our family stories from Nebraska’s dustbowl to a
fresh start in Oregon. But she was already forgetting.
By the time I composed our history and returned, Mildred had no
memory. I preserved her stories, but was too late with my gift. I felt
awful but read them to her anyway.
Once Mildred rode Diamond to the neighbor’s to get the Sunday
funnies. She held reins tight to control the ornery stallion. Things
went well, so she read the funnies on the ride back. Reins slackened
and Diamond charged straight home, galloping across fields and flying over fences while Mildred held on for dear life. “Amazing!” Mildred
exclaimed.
My dad rode a horse by the railroad tracks that skirted their farm. A
small, white dog rustled out of the bushes and jumped behind Dad on
the tall draft horse and rode home. The dog, left behind by the circus,
danced and rode horses. “Really!” Mildred laughed.
In Oregon, 1965, Mildred sold encyclopedias. She sold enough to
get round-trip airfare to a Chicago convention where some lucky rep
would win a Cadillac. She traded her ticket for two one-way tickets so
her husband could help her drive home. Incredibly, Mildred’s name
was drawn and they drove that Cadillac home.
As I finished reading, Mildred burst out saying, “This is the best
story I’ve ever heard! And to think, it’s about me!” Although I was as
delighted as Mildred, I had to fight back tears. I wasn’t too late. I was
just in time, without a moment to spare.

OLYMPIA - The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
(WDFW) has re-established a hotline to report dead, sick or injured
swans in three northwest Washington counties as part of its ongoing effort to assess the impact of lead poisoning on trumpeter
swans.
People can call (360) 466-4345, ext. 266, to report dead, sick or injured swans in Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties. Callers
should be prepared to leave a message including their name and
phone number, and the location and condition of the swans.
The hotline is available 24 hours a day through the end of March.
Some trumpeter swans in those three counties, and in southwestern British Columbia, die each winter from lead poisoning after
ingesting lead shot in areas where they feed.
Lead shot has been banned for waterfowl hunting in Washington
for more than two decades. But swans can still pick up and ingest
lead shot while foraging in shallow underwater areas in fields and
roosts where lead shot is still present.
People who observe dead, sick or injured swans are advised not
to handle or collect the birds, said Paul DeBruyn, WDFW wildlife
biologist for Skagit and Whatcom counties.
Instead, people should call the hotline, he said. WDFW and Puget
Sound Energy employees, as well as volunteers from the Trumpeter Swan Society, will pick up the birds.
WDFW and other agencies and organizations have been working
since 2001 to locate sources of toxic lead.

What you’ll need:
Felt • craft stick • scissors • craft glue • googly eyes • paper cup
What you’ll do:
1. Cut a piece of brown felt to create the groundhog. Glue it to
cover the top half of the craft stick. You can cut the nose, ears and
mouth out of different colors of felt to add some features to your
groundhog.
2. Glue the googly eyes along with your other features into place.
3. Cut green felt or construction paper big enough to wrap around
the outside of your cup with about a 1-inch overhang at the top.
Cut slits around the edge of the felt to create the “grass” and then
glue the felt around the cup.
4. Cut a slit into the bottom of the cup and then stick your groundhog on the craft stick through the hole. Your child can hold the
bottom of the stick and push it up and down so that the groundhog plays peek-a-boo.

grew up with an inborn love of art and music. Growing up in Kansas, she was involved in band, orchestra, chorus and piano. No
art classes.
Jan graduated with a BA in Elementary Education from the University of Kansas. While teaching 5th grade, her favorite time in
the classroom was Friday afternoon, when she could introduce
art projects to her students.
While a stay-at-home mom, Jan took her first formal art classes from internationally known artist Elinor King Hookam. She
learned and fell in love with all mediums, but decided to concentrate on Watercolor, as that was the most challenging.
In 1988 the family relocated to the Northwest, and for the next
20 years she worked full time in the Aerospace Industry as the
Document/Data/Software Management team leader.
Immediately after retiring in 2000, she sought out art again.
Since that time she has had classes with Diane Hill and Michelle
Cooper, as well as workshops with Eric Weigardt, Tony Couch, and
Kathy Collins. While living in Bellevue Jan was a member of EAFA,
Eastside Association for Fine Arts. Jan is currently a member of
SCAG, Stanwood Camano Arts Guild, and Camano Roaming Artists. She has participated in Art by the Bay, Art Aloft, Art in the
Schoolhouse.
Jan especially loves to paint the wildlife and scenes of the Pacific Northwest. Visit her work at the Guilded Gallery in Stanwood.

ANIMAL SHELTER - part 2
LIFE INSIDE CAMANO’S ANIMAL SHELTER
You may not know the important role the Camano Animal Shelter
Association (CASA) plays in the community or what makes our organization different. One way to find out is to visit our shelter.
As you enter the shelter lobby you are greeted by kitties and staff.
Staff can help direct you to either the dogs through the door on one
side or cats in rooms off to the other side, around the lobby, and even
in the bathroom. They will try to understand the type of pet you are
looking for and will help direct you toward ones which may be a good
fit.
If you’re there for the dogs, you will head left into the dog building.
CASA is home to an ever-changing number of dogs. We take stray and
impounded dogs from Camano Island, transfers from other area shelters like the Everett Animal Shelter, and also surrendered dogs from
the Island and beyond. If you are interested in a dog, the staff will take
you and that pooch to our dog yard for a little one on one. That very
dog yard is getting a serious makeover right now which will provide a
UV resistant and sunny roof over the main area.
If you fancy more of a feline friend you will find yourself carefully
searching among our free roaming cats. As some lounge around the
lobby, other shy or special needs cats are in luxury cat condos by the
window. The Purple Cat Room around the corner is where cats get
away from lobby traffic and kick their paws up on towers or “cloud”
shelves. That new dog yard roof will also cover our new “Catio”. This
cat-secure patio is where they can have safe outdoor access to lounge
in while they wait for their forever homes. The Catio will be accessible
just off the Purple Cat Room via a cat door for them and a sliding glass
door for you.
Outside of that room is our Laundry Room, which is really work-central. It is home to the washer and dryer, refrigerator and where towels,
bedding, blankets, crates and stock items are stored. This area also can
house a small number of cats who may be waiting to hit the adoption
floor. The last room is CASA’s Isolation Room which we simply call
“ISO”. This is where we intake stray and surrendered cats, manage triage, perform assessments, blood draws, in-house labs like FeLV and
Combo blood tests and skin scrapes, medicate, vaccinate, and take
care of other medical needs. This room also has a desk which serves as
the office of the shelter manager, treasurer, and bookkeeper.
Returning to the lobby, you will often find it still filled with guests.
If you gave not been able to find just the right pet the staff may try
to take a quick look at what other shelters around may have up for
adoption. While you have taken a little time to peruse the animals, the
staff, usually just two people, have likely been answering the phone,
greeting more public, encouraging spaying and neutering, and selling county dog licenses. They may have also been taking in stray pets,
reuniting missing pets with their owners, helping people keep their
pets instead of giving them up, or consoling someone who must
give theirs up. They are doing dog-introductions between shelter
dogs and applicant dogs, processing adoptions, taking care of animal
medical needs, or a number of other things that pop up in any given
day. Generous donors are also stopping by to donate litter, food and
monetary gifts. We hope you will take the time to come in and enjoy
CASA too.

meet Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson & Cooper Helfet! Dylan was
at Children’s Hospital for a short stay this week and was fortunate
enough to be visited by some special VIP’s. Russell Wilson shared
that he had been at Children’s when he was nine (the same age as
Dylan)and assured Dylan he would get through it. He told Dylan
to, “Dream Big!” We’re happy to report Dylan is home today and
resting up to come back healthy and ready to go in the new year.

You can help us save lives. Domestic pets do not thrive without
the help of humans. Without us, pets can slip through the cracks
or end up living out their lives on the streets. With the local economy in hard times too many people are left with the decision to
give up their pets. Many are too embarrassed to ask for help, and
some pets are left at the homes their owners had to leave behind.
Many cats who are left behind do not find their way to the shelter. Often they learn to survive out in the wild and either start or
join a feral/wild colony. Feral colonies on our island are prevalent
and heavily contribute to the shelter’s Kitten Season. CASA tries
to help save, bottle feed and wean as many motherless kittens as
possible during our warmer months. We depend completely on
people willing to foster and nurture these kittens around the clock
until they are old enough to come live at the shelter and find their

Probably the most important and most often overlooked position
for your local Little League is that of the Umpire. After all, a game
(above Rookies) cannot be played and counted as an “official”
game if an umpire is not presiding over it. Too often people are
forced into umpiring for games in our District without the proper
training, attire, background checks or many other issues that we
owe to our kids who love playing this game. Fill the hole of that
missing piece for SCLL ...and become a trained Umpire through
Washington District 1 Little League’s Umpire Clinic in Mill Creek,
taking place 2/27, 2/28 and 3/1. And SCLL will even cover your
cost for registration -- which includes a lunch each day. Signing
up as an umpire for SCLL means working games in Stanwood/Camano only. We NEED you. The kids NEED you. Completion of the
clinic and registration with SCLL as a 2015 Umpire will also earn

bluff property, the marine life on your beach and the watershed

Animal behaviorist, Temple Grandin
to speak at Country Living Expo Jan. 31. The annual Country Living
Expo and Cattlemen’s Winterschool Jan. 31 will offer more than 185
workshops and classes. The full-day expo will be at Stanwood High
School. Keynote speaker Temple Grandin will discuss her work on
understanding animal behavior and her desire for animals to have
more than just a low-stress life. She wrote a book about being autistic and is a world-renowned authority on animal behavior. “Our
program has grown to include not only rural farmers and cattle
producers but also homeowners, backyard farmers and urban
apartment dwellers,” said Joan DeVries, program coordinator with
Washington State University Extension in Skagit, Snohomish and
Island counties. “Many people in the area are making the decision
to grow and harvest their own fresh, healthy food.” For registration

District will offer a 2015 Habitat Stewards Training Program on
Camano Island. Habitat Stewards Training empowers volunteers
to become stewards to help the community create, preserve, enhance, and restore wildlife habitat. The training includes topics
ranging from native plant identification to creating a personal
backyard wildlife sanctuary at your own home. The Habitat Stewards Training will take place at the Camano Multipurpose Center,
141 N. East Camano Drive, Thursdays Feb. 12, 19, 26, March 5, 12
from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m., and include two Saturday field trips (8:30
to 11:30 a.m.) Feb. 21 and March 7. There will also be optional
hands-on work parties offered at the Camano Wildlife Habitat
demonstration gardens (Four Springs Lake Preserve and Camano
Center). The training costs $40 for course expenses and includes

The early line coming out of Las Vegas for Super Bowl 49 had
the NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks as a two-and-a-half point
favorite over the AFC Champion New England Patriots, it quickly
dropped to one point. and then went to a pick.

Seahawks
(14-4) came up
with the biggest
comeback in
championship
game history
and won it after
trailing 16-0 in
the third quarter.
The Seahawks
won it on a 35yard touchdown
pass from Russell
Wilson to Jermaine Kearse in
overtime. Wilson
was moved
to tears when
talking about the
comeback with
sideline reporter
Erin Andrews
after the game.
Some on-line sites, such as iodds had the line set during the third
quarter of New England’s blowout win over Indianapolis in the
AFC title game and then dropped it as the Pats continued to pile
it on the Colts.
The over/under point total opened at 49 and remained steady.
This will be the sixth trip to the Super Bowl in the Bill Belichick/
Tom Brady Era for the Patriots. They have been favored four times
and were an underdog just once.
New England was a heavy underdog to the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI, but pulled off a 20-17 upset.
The Patriots were favored by a touchdown in both of their Super
Bowl XXXVIII and XXXIX wins over the Carolina Panthers and the
Eagles, but won both games by just three points.
New England was also favored in both of their Super Bowl losses
to the Giants in Super Bowl XLII and XLVI.
So while the Pats are 3-2 in Super Bowls under Belichick/Brady,
they are just 1-4 against the spread; 1-0 as an underdog and 0-4
as a favorite.
Seattle was an underdog to Denver in last year’s Super Bowl and
blew out the Broncos, 43-8.

Enjoy these delicious brownies while rooting for your favorite team!
INGREDIENTS: 8 (1 oz. squares) unsweetened chocolate • 1 c. unsalted butter • 5 eggs • 3 c. granulated sugar • 1 T. vanilla extract • 1
1/2 c. all-purpose flour • 1 tsp. salt • 2 c. chopped pecans or walnuts,
toasted • 2 c. M&M candies, I roughly chopped about 1/2 of them
DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 9 x 13-inch
baking pan. 2. Melt chocolate and butter in a saucepan over low
heat, set aside. 3. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat eggs, sugar, and
vanilla, on medium-high speed for 10 minutes. Stop the mixer, and
pour in the melted chocolate mixture, flour and salt, blend until just
mixed. Stir in the nuts by hand. Pour into prepared pan. 4. Bake for
35-40 minutes. (Don’t over bake.) Cool for 5-10 minutes, then top
with 2 cups M&M’s, lightly pressing them into brownies. Makes 24.

The average groundhog is 20 inches long and normally weighs

Young Groundhogs are usually born in mid-April or May, and by

Pennsylvania’s earliest settlers. They brought with them the legend of Candlemas Day, which states “For as the sun shines on Candlemas day, so far will the snow swirl in May...”. The settlers found
that groundhogs were plentiful and were the most intelligent and
sensible animal to carry on the legend of Candlemas Day.

I Remember Memories

I remember lots of things that I have never known;
Orchids in the window box before the weeds had grown
And memories of preschool days and tigers painted green
The arm my Uncle Louie lost in the candy cane machine.
The horses ran. The trees stood still. The gophers dared not
speak.
The same things happened differently, 11 days a week.
An Charlemagne, a winsome lass devoid of any feature,
Portrayed with child-like modesty, the black lagoon-ed creature.
I remember – no, I don’t – at least I can’t recall
The times we laughed and squashed the spiders on the wall.
Suspended from her earlobes, they gypsy’s earrings hung.
A picnic lunch for Paul Revere that no one else had brung.
Because we all have hopes and dreams and tired blood and blisters
And if we were not brothers all, we’d be each other’s sisters.

Twas the Monday Night Football, we have all waited for
The Saints vs Seahawks and the #12’s roar
The fans were all wearing, their green, white and blue
Watching the Saints record, fall to 9-3, not 10-2
When all of a sudden, the sight of our boys
Brings the fans to their feet. With their deafening noise
As the crows gets louder, and ready for battle
You know without a doubt, you must be in Seattle
As the team takes the field, lead by a man in Hawks apparel,
You hear the loud cheers, For the head coach Pete Carroll.
The offense includes Unger & Tate,
Baldwin, Rice, Kearse, and Harvin as of late.
And who’s the running back, about to explode?
