Community dialogues about early childhood, part of the national Raising of America campaign, will be presented at Camano Island Library
at 6:30 p.m. The Raising of America: Early Childhood and the Future
of Our Nation is a media/public engagement project that aims to reframe the way Americans look at early child health and development.
The event will start with a 30-minute excerpt from the documentary
series “Raising of America.” The five-part series will be broadcast on
PBS this fall. More information about the campaign is available online

presents a program on the art and history of tin cans.

bites. They are
also grown all
over the world:

except Antarctica), to be exact.
It’s not strange to be talking about bats, the only flying mammal,
in the fall, especially around Halloween. It is also not strange to see
bats flying during the winter because we do have a species (Myotis
californicus) that is active all year round (pictured above). The Pacific
Northwest is home to 15 different species of bats, most live here on
the west side with us. All of our bats eat insects.
There is no firm information about where our local bats go during
the winter but, bats will roost in wood piles and backyard umbrellas.
There is a species, Hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus), which likes to burrow
under leaf litter, so a bat siting when you are raking up those autumn
leaves is possible. This bat is the largest in the Pacific NW. Most of our
bats are so small people who find them think they are baby bats.
Baby bats are born in the spring and must be able to fly and eat in
a short period of time in order to migrate or find a place to hibernate.
If the mom bat finds a location that is hot (100 degrees +) it helps the
pup mature faster. This is why some attics become maternity roosts.
It’s not good to have bats in your house. The ideal situation would be
to let them mature and fly away in the fall, then, do an exclusion so
they can’t return to the attic. If you could put up a bat house near the
attic, they would probably move into the new house. Bats are very
loyal to roosts.

If you find a bat on the ground, please do not touch it. Bats can be

History
The Sternwheeler Gleaner at dock in Stanwood, c.1910-1928. The
Gleaner was built and operated by Capt. McDonald of the Skagit
Navigation Co. It was one of the fleet of launch steamers in Puget
Sound operating between Mt. Vernon and Seattle. It delivered
goods and people to the area. It was built along the Stillaguamish
River on the property in Stanwood currently owned by the Hamilton
Lumber Co. The Gleaner was stranded in December 1940, snagged
and sunk upstream from the North Fork Bridge on the Skagit River.

Area Historical
Society.
As a boy Clarence Hartley moved around a good deal. His father
took jobs where he found them, usually in lumber mills or warehouses. Born in Clear Lake, Washington on January 6, 1933, Clarence attended grammar schools in Mt. Vernon, nearby Burlington,
Everett, Stanwood and Napa, California. After graduating from East
Stanwood’s Lincoln grade school in May 1948, he spent his freshman year at Twin City High School before the family moved back to
Clear Lake. Dissatisfied at his new school in Sedro-Woolley, Clarence
dropped out and enlisted in the army on March 15, 1950 receiving
his basic instruction at California’s Fort Ord. Clarence last visited his
mother in September 1950, who by this time was living on Camano
Island, before being sent to Korea and the bloody conflict which took
his life. He told her not to worry; “Just always remember that I’m coming home,” he said.
South Korea’s communist neighbor to the north had invaded on
June 25, 1950. A United Nations’ force led by American troops deployed in support of the South Koreans. PFC Clarence Hartley was
assigned to C Company, 7th Cavalry, 1st Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division. Trained as a bazooka gunner, he was sent to the front lines September 12th where his unit was assigned to support a tank battalion.
The war and initial allied success changed dramatically on October
25, 1950 when thousands of Chinese troops crossed the Yalu River
to rescue their faltering client state. South Korean forces buckled under the swift advance and numbers of Chinese forces jeopardizing
withdrawal of the U.S. 8th Army down the Korean peninsula. The job
given the 7th Cavalry was as a rear guard to protect the Army’s extraction before they were cut off.
Numbing temperatures settled on the regiment the night of
November 29th as it dug in on frozen, snow covered, high ground
alongside a critical road junction just north of Sinchang-ni. Initial
probes by the enemy were beaten back by Company C but near midnight outposts mistook approaching Chinese troops for Americans.
Suddenly the air erupted with the blare of bugles and whistles as
Chinese attackers drove a wedge between two battalions, overrunning two command posts. However, the division and the 7th regiment regrouped and held. The fighting that night and the next day
took 42 American lives with 140 wounded and five tanks destroyed.
The Chinese reportedly lost over 1600 men. When Lydia Hartley returned home from the Camano Chapel on December 21st, a telegram waited, brutal in its simplicity—the government regrets. Just a
month earlier she had sent Clarence a cake and presents to mark the
18th birthday he never saw.
Battalion Surgeon Capt. John Rourke remembered that some of
the most frantic hours of his military career came during the attack
at Sinchang-ni. We don’t know, but it is entirely possible that as the
captain worked to save those cavalry troopers who poured into the
aid station, one face he may have looked into, in the early hours of
November 30th, belonged to PFC Clarence Hartley.

Materials Needed: newspaper, coffee filters, glue, thin cardboard
(like a cereal box) poppy seeds, twigs from the garden, felt, tempera
paint, brushes, art shirt, wax paper
Directions: 1. The first thing you have to do is paint your newspaper
and/or coffee filters. We used liquid tempera paint. We tried watercolor but the color was too light. 2. Let dry. We left ours outside and
it dried lickety split. 3. While the paint is drying, take your thin cardboard and trace out two circles. I used a small ice wine glass. 4. Cut
them out. 5. Take one of the circles and use it as a template to cut
out a circle of felt. Try to make it slightly larger than the cardboard
one. Set aside. 6. Cover one of your cardboard circles with glue and
sprinkle on some poppy seeds. Try to cover the whole area and
press them down into the glue. Set aside to dry. 7. We tried dried
beans for the center but they didn’t look as good and they made
the center too heavy. Lentils or sesame seeds might work to make a
Sunflower with a different colored center. 8. Take your dry painted
newspaper and/or coffee filters and cut into strips about 3-4 inches
wide. Then using the accordion fold fold them up. 9. Cut thru all the
layers. Cut a nice petal shape. You may need to do this several times
to make enough petals. 10. Start gluing the petals onto the edge of
the other cardboard circle. We alternated the painted side with the
non painted side cause we liked how it looked. You could alternate
with the painted filters or do one out of unpainted newspaper for a
different look. 11. Keep gluing you need about 3 layers to get a nice
full look. When you have all the petals you want glued on put some
glue in the middle and add your poppy seed center. 12. Let the glue
set for a little while and then turn over and glue on your twig. 13.
Glue on your felt circle. This will help get your twig attached to your
flower. 14. Let dry and that’s it. Make a bunch and you have a nice
display.

The Shed
Sitting by the sea shore soaking up the sun,
She shed her cozy sweat shirt just for fun.
As she watched the claims begin to squirt,
She heard the symphony of the sea and then removed her skirt.
Wiggling her toes into the sand,
That’s when her “ah ha” moment began.
I need a place to be alone,
A special place to call my own.
Yes, the sea shore was empty as far as she could see,
But she knew this wouldn’t always be.
So she headed for home at a healthy trot.
It was then she decided to build a little shed on her own beach lot.
She built a little shed that was designed just for her.
She filled it with all the things she loved, including a rug of faux fur.
She knew that men had their “man cave”,
A place where they could misbehave.
But she knew her special shed was a place to relieve life’s strife.
So she found a piece of driftwood and carved a name with her little
handy knife.
Proudly she hung her sign above the door just above her head.
With a smile upon her face she stood back and looked at her very
own “she shed.”

Recently my wife Michele and I started a new chapter in our
lives by moving to Camano Island. We also decided to start working
together. We thought, what better way to strengthen our marriage
than to spend every waking minute of every single day together
– eating, playing, sleeping and now working? What could possibly
go wrong?
Okay, I know what you’re about to say: What were you thinking?
But before you question our wisdom, I should point out that our
skill sets are remarkably complementary. On the one hand, my wife
is an extremely talented portrait artist. And on the other hand, I am
the husband of an extremely talented portrait artist.
My wife wanted someone to oversee marketing so she could
spend more time painting – and shooting down every marketing
idea I came up with. (I still think my idea for her to parade the sidewalks of Stanwood in a sandwich board handing out coupons for
$10 off a portrait would have worked. But alas, we’ll never know
because she squashed that idea.)
I’m excited about my new career opportunity. Oh sure, the pay
is not the best – my salary rivals our cat Dusty’s annual income. But
the benefits are great, by which I mean I get to stay in our home,
watch The Big Bang Theory over lunch and sleep with the boss (so
long as I promise not to file a sexual harassment lawsuit).
You may think my wife just handed me the job, but nothing could
be further from the truth. She put me through a grueling interview
to make sure I was the right candidate for the position:
My wife: So, tell me, why should I hire you for this position over
some other more qualified candidate?
Me: Because I will work for donuts.
My wife: What would you say are some of your greatest strengths?

Me: Did I mention I will work for donuts? Also, I don’t snore in bed,
and I won’t ask you for a raise in six months – ok, ever. Besides, I have
tons of great marketing ideas. Please don’t hold the sandwich board
idea against me. I was having a brain freeze from a cherry burst Slurpee that impaired my thinking.
My wife: What would you say are your biggest weaknesses? Actually, never mind. I can answer that myself. Think I’m going to need
another pad of paper, however.
Me: Thank you. Hey, did I mention I write a humor blog?
My wife: I am aware of that, but I won’t hold it against you when
considering your qualifications. So where do you see yourself in five
years?
Me: Hopefully lying on a hammock on some tropical beach with
one of those umbrella drinks…. Oh, you mean, career-wise? Ah, got
it. Well, at this stage, it’s hard for me to imagine any respectable
business wanting to hire me. And as for my idea about starting a
business selling chicken ‘n cheese frozen yogurt, I’m pretty sure that
ship has sailed. So, probably stuck with – er, I mean, collaborating
with you.
My wife: What would be the first thing you would do if I brought
you on board as my marketing director?
Me: Other than doing a Krispy Kreme donut run?
My wife: Yes, other than that.
Me: Probably ask for more vacation time.
My wife was a tough interviewer, but I’m pretty sure I aced it because she picked me for the job. I clearly was way more qualified
than the other finalist she was considering – our cat Blackie. His
cover letter wasn’t even legible.
I started work last week and so far it’s going great. I even have
my own office. Technically, it’s a storage closet in the basement, but
if I hit my quarterly sales target, the boss has promised to consider
possibly letting me have an office with a window – and maybe even
a chair.
It’s going to be a fantastic partnership – my wife sitting at her
easel painting amazing likenesses of governors, university presidents and captains of industry, and me in my storage closet getting
caught up on past episodes of CSI Miami on my cell phone. I have to
go. I think I hear my boss coming down the hall. Darn, and just when
I was about to break my record score in Candy Crush.

Stanwood Camano Food Bank Announces
Home Pickup for Food Donors
Starting October 12, volunteers will collect food from households
that want to donate food to Stanwood Camano Food Bank six times
a year. The program is called A Simple Gesture because it makes it
easy to give food to needy families. A Simple Gesture will provide a
reusable green bag for donors to fill and leave on their front porch
for pickup on the scheduled pickup dates. It will no long be necessary to drop off your food donations at the food bank or remember
to bring items for a food drive. Simply complete a registration card,
mail it in and gather food to fill the bag. The first pickup will be on
Saturday October 10th between 9:00 am and noon. The next pickup will be in two months on December 12th, 2015, and every two
months thereafter on the second Saturday of every even numbered
month. This service will start on Camano Island October 10th and
will expand to the 98292 zip code next year. The service is intended to make it easier for people to donate food for hungry families
served by the Stanwood Camano Food Bank in our local communities. The A Simple Gesture program is offered in approximately 30
areas throughout the country and is a completely volunteer effort.

Construction begins on new StanwoodCamano YMCA
Construction has officially begun on the new Stanwood-Camano
Family YMCA, at 7213 267th St. NW in Stanwood. Efforts to bring
a YMCA to the Stanwood-Camano community have been in the
works since 2010. The new 43-48,000-square-foot full-service facility
will provide aquatics, wellness and fitness, youth sports, teen, older
adult, and family programs. Working with volunteers, community
leaders, and the Stanwood-Camano School District to identify community needs, the YMCA has provided programs in the StanwoodCamano community since 2012. Provided site development and
fundraising benchmarks are achieved, the Y has an expected open

and Silent Auction Fundraiser to be held on March 5, 2016. This auction enables the PTO to sponsor activities that enrich the educational experience of our students and allows us to add enhancements
to our music department, computer lab and other school programs.

The Cama Beach Foundation is looking for another amateur astronomer to help us expand the very popular “Night Skies” events
at Cama Beach State Park. We’ve been offering evening programs
since purchasing an 8” Dobsonian telescope a year ago. The response has far exceeded our expectations. As a result we’re looking
for another volunteer amateur astronomer and we’ll probably be

Despite numerous moves toward fire protection dating back to
the big fire of 1892, it was not until December 1908 that Stanwood
had an officially organized volunteer fire department, complete
with constitution by-laws, fire hall and modern equipment of that
era. First efforts toward protection began with hook-ups with the
McLaughlin Mill, steamers at the dock and a few hydrants near the
water front. These progressed to a hose cart, more hose and more
hydrants, until the fire that swept the James Astel home in 1907.
The inadequacy of the situation then stirred the town resulting in
a 25-horse power engine and accessories, plus more willing volunteers. Come 1908, lots had been purchased for a fire hall, which was
built in 1909 at the cost of $888.77 and equipped with a modern fire
engine and pump at a tab of $1,643.54. Meantime the department
of volunteer fire fighters was enlarged and reorganized to man the
shining new equipment. A banquet was given for the fireman, and
the first Firemen’s Ball was staged to provide additional funds. An
official fire alarm system was set up and advertised in the Tidings
as follows:
“Fire-Fire! In case of fire continuous quick ringing of the fire bell will
call out the Fire Department, Anyone may ring the alarm. The signal
to call Firemen to drill will be three long and two short rings of the
bell repeated four times.”
In January 1910 a Hard Times Ball was given by the Fire Department
to raise money for more needed equipment and paraphernalia. Tickets were $1, supper was 50 cents a plate, Nordenstrom’s furnished
the music. Hats, coats, and equipment arrived presently and as far
as recorded, Stanwood had an official and well equipped volunteer
department. Much to the joy of residents, September brought a
general reduction on insurance rates on all town property, because
of the new Fire Department. The town was re-surveyed by insurance
companies who then allowed a decrease of 10 to 60 cents Per hundred on property in town.

“People make it fun” says Leslie Borg, this month’s volunteer. Leslie started at Morgan’s Tales in November of 2005. She has had other
assignments at the Resource Center, but likes being in the book
store most of all. She enjoys reading and would probably spend her
time reading if she did less volunteering.
Leslie volunteers at the Food Bank Thrift Store as well as at Morgan’s tales. In both places she likes the socializing that is often lost
when a person retires. Leslie and her husband share a passion for
older British cars and often take one or two to car shows. They also
travel with car club groups as they did on a recent trip to Albany,
Oregon to see the hot air balloon festival.
When asked what she would say to others who are thinking about
volunteering, she points out that you meet so many people. Some
become regulars and some are just passing through. But everyone
has a story. Sharing those stories helps with the person-to-person
contact that is such a valuable part of any interaction.

Have you ever wondered about the shapes of wine bottles? Are
they shaped differently for a reason or is it just random artistry? As
is often the case in wine, tradition is the major player for the different bottle shapes. There are four main types:
Bordeaux bottles have high shoulders with straight sides for
wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc
and Pinot Grigio. The high shoulders were created to help trap
sediment due to prominent tannins in most of these wines. These
bottles are made of thick glass with a high punt (indentation on the
bottom of the bottle).
Burgundy bottles are tall and wide with sloping shoulders for
wines like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Chablis and Pinot Gris. Much like
Bordeaux bottles, these are made of thick glass. Purportedly, Burgundy bottles were the first to be created and the sloping shoulders
made for easy stacking as well as achievability for glass blowers.
Champagne bottles are wide with low shoulders for wines like
Champagne, Cava, and Prosecco. These bottles were created out of
necessity due to the pressure inside the bottles (roughly 70-90 psi).
They are made of thick glass, have a high punt and low shoulders
to contain the immense pressure inside the bottles. By the way, the
thick corks and cages securing them are no mistake either.
German/Alsatian bottles are narrow and tall with gentle sloping
shoulders for wines like Riesling and Gewürztraminer. The slender
shape and lighter weight of these bottles were made for convenient stowing on ships during their voyage along trade routes in
the early years.
Hopefully this bit of trivia may make shopping easier - especially
the next time you and your fellow wine shopper are both trying to
spot that last bottle of Bordeaux!

INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. penne pasta • 3 T. unsalted butter, divided • 1 c.
onion, finely chopped • 1 c. 100 % pumpkin puree (not pumpkin
pie filling) • 3/4 c. unsweetened almond milk • 1/2 c. sharp cheddar
cheese, shredded • 1/2 c. Parmesan cheese, shredded and divided •
1/2 tsp. nutmeg • 1/2 tsp. ground thyme • 1 tsp. salt • 1/2 tsp. pepper
• 1/4 c. panko breadcrumbs • Fresh parsley, chopped
DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 13x9-inch
baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. 2. Cook penne pasta al
dente, according to package instructions. Drain and set aside. 3.
Meanwhile, melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until tender, about 3-5 minutes.
4. Reduce heat to low and add the pumpkin puree, almond milk,
cheddar cheese, 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, nutmeg, thyme, salt,
and pepper to the skillet. Stir to combine ingredients until cheese
is melted and the sauce is smooth. 5. Add the drained penne and
stir to evenly coat noodles in the sauce. Pour into prepared dish.
Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter in a small bowl and add panko
breadcrumbs. Stir to combine and sprinkle evenly over top of the
penne. 6. Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes until heated through.
Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup Parmesan and chopped parsley
before serving. Serves 4-6.

CAKE: 1 c. margarine or butter • 2 c. granulated sugar • 2 lg. eggs • 2
1/2 c. all purpose flour • 2 tsp. baking powder • 1 tsp. baking soda
• 1/8 tsp. salt • 2 tsp. ground cinnamon • 3 c. finely chopped apples
• 1 c. chopped walnuts • 2-3 T. milk
GLAZE: 3/4 c. granulated sugar • 1/2 c. margarine or butter • 1/4 c.
buttermilk • 1 T. light corn syrup • 1/4 tsp. baking soda • 1 tsp. vanilla
extract
DIRECTIONS: 1. Cake: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour
a 9x13-inch pan. 2. In a large bowl, cream together margarine and
sugar. Add eggs, beat until well combined. 3. In a separate bowl,
combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon.
Add dry ingredients to the margarine mixture, blend well. Stir in
apples walnuts and milk. 4. Spread cake batter evenly in prepared
pan. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. 5.
Glaze: While cake is baking, combine sugar, margarine, buttermilk,
corn syrup and baking soda in a medium pan. Stir and cook to a rolling boil. Remove from heat and add 1 teaspoon of vanilla. 6. Pour
and spread glaze over hot cake as soon as the cake is removed from
the oven. Let cake cool completely before serving. The longer it sits,
the better it gets!

Weather and PAIN?
How does weather affect our joints and energy? Did you ever know
someone who could “smell” snow or rain before it came? What they
“smell” is a change in the electrical charge in the air. All atoms have
either a positive or negative charge so they can bind to form molecules. As the barometer falls, the positive charge, or “ions” increase
which causes a depletion of cortisone in the body. This happens to all
creatures that have adrenal glands—in other words, all mammals. It
means that the pressure against our body drops as well, and our joints
and areas that are injured can begin to swell. Did you ever notice how
your cold or pain gets worse at night? Mine does. I understand pain,
as I have arthritis and fibromyalgia. This will happen because our bodies slow their production of both adrenaline and cortisone in the evening so we can go to sleep. It’s part of our circadian rhythm. So what
can we do to manage this? Well, depending on the problem, whether
it is pain, mood, or energy, there are some solutions. If the problem
is simply energy, then it will be useful to stay away from simple carbohydrates such as sugar, starches, and junk food. Eat foods that will
sustain you and not bring the “crash” you feel after that morning donut or muffin. Don’t assume that caffeine is the answer, either. Chronic
pain, chronic fatigue and depression all present unique challenges.
They all can be affected by nutrition, exercise, sunlight and barometric pressure. A good support is exercise; simple stretching, gentle or
seated yoga, meditation. Essential oils in a bath or shower help tremendously. Heatbale wraps and socks also are great tools. Come into

We don’t have many rules down here on the anarchic South End.
Don’t need em, don’t want em, won’t obey em anyway. But there
IS one unwritten one, maybe not something Moses brought down
from the Mountain, but if he were around today, he’d probably
make it the 11th Commandment: Do NOT do plumbing prior to arriving guests.
Plumbing looks easy. Seems like you take off a coupler here, exchange a faucet, replace a gasket, nothing to it…. If you think that,
you’ve never done plumbing and you don’t live down here at the
butt end of an island where the nearest plumbing parts are 10 miles
away and the nearest SERIOUS plumbing parts stores are 40 miles
away. Plumbing Repairs for the Complete Idiot states emphatically:
no repair project requires LESS than 3 trips to the hardware store.
It is a Law of the Universe, right up there with E= mc squared. It is
inviolable. I know, believe me, I know.
I got company coming tomorrow. Don’t ask me why, but … yeah,
I broke the 11th Commandment. I thought it would be a no-brainer,
a piece of cake, a walk in the park. Just pull our old pitted pedestal
sink and replace it with my new 100 year old mint-condition porcelain beauty, a $12.50 score at the RE-Store. All I had to do was
disassemble the brass fixtures, put em on the new one and voila’, a
Martha Steward golden moment.
Course, the old parts, being 100 years old and corroded beyond
belief, proved a bit recalcitrant, but I patiently worked with pliers,
screwdrivers, vise grips, monkey wrenches, hammers, hacksaws,
spit, curses and pitiable prayers to the implacable gods of plumbing. Half a day later I had the old sink literally in pieces. The pieces,
of course, didn’t match up to the new sink. You can trying mating
disparate parts of corroded brass with stripped threads in multiple
arrangements, but … guaranteed, they won’t mate up, not in an
hour, not in a day, not in the puny time left to you and me in this
human lifetime.
So I went to the hardware store. Not once, not twice … you KNOW
how many if you believe in PHYSICS. Meanwhile, our company is en
route. I guess they can wash up with the outside hose. I suppose
they’ll be understanding. Or … maybe this just a South Ender’s
strategy for shortening their visit.

Bonny Roots
When doing genealogy five years ago, I fantasized going to the
Bonny Cravat in Woodchurch, England, a pub run by my Fullagar ancestors in the 1700-1800s. It had been a smuggler’s inn back then
with a priest hole to stash things and a tunnel in the basement that
led to the church across the street. I have the money to go, so I “drove
by” on Google maps street view, imagining going in.
This year, my sister, Lynda, surprised me with a birthday present: a
trip to explore our British ancestors’ stomping grounds and to quaff a
brew at the Bonny Cravat. Although my birthday was in January, we
traveled in September and just returned.
We lucked out when planning the trip; a distant cousin, Bob
Chown—who’d researched the family back to 1500—offered a private tour. He and his wife, Pat, drove us around many towns, pointing out homes, pubs, farms, churches, and graves of many generations of the Fullagars of Kent County.
We stopped at the Bonny Cravat for lunch. The pub looked like
the image on Google maps: white plaster walls, clay-tile roof, and
paned windows. Inside, ancient ceiling beams were festooned with
hops. On the wall hung a framed document listing innkeepers and
publicans from 1690 to the present, including many Fullagars.
I asked our barmaid if the place was haunted. She laughed but didn’t
think so. What about the tunnel in the basement? Gone. Part of the
basement had been filled in.
Sigh. I contented myself with my pint, cottage pie, and good company.
Bob said, the English are reserved and don’t talk to each other
until you get them in a pub. “It’s our natural home.”
Many Fullagars ran pubs, offering a place to relax and be at home
with each other. I’ll drink to that.
