The Coyote – A Pet`s Best Friend!
201 FALL 0 Now, thanks to MSW Interactive, you can visit us online at www.daslakeoftheozarks.com The Coyote – A Pet’s Best Friend! Smiles widen, all eyes turn to see the lucky shelter dog or cat who’s about to have their moment in the spotlight. The warm welcomes from Rounder, KC and The Rev put the animal more at ease as it enters the unfamiliar room full of people. The studio lights go up so the web camera can get a good shot of the Radio Pet-of-the-Week for folks to view online. Once inside, the animal is let loose from its leash or carrier to explore every nook and cranny at will. A favorite nook for the dogs is usually found pretty quickly, under KC’s side of the table – a big bag of aromatic treats! The cats often find the soundboard to be a more fascinating (and potentially disruptive) thing, and warm to lie on too! Nearly every Thursday morning just after 8:00 for the past 3 years, this happy scene has taken place during the KC and The Roundman Show in The Coyote radio station studio on the square in Camdenton. Each pet brings his or her own adventure! 107.9 isn’t called “the station that has more fun” for nothing! On their website, 1079thecoyote.com, you can find a long picture list of most of the animals that they have featured on the air. Coyote Nation is huge; the station has a faithful following in Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Rolla, as far north as Versailles and all of the Lake of the Ozarks area! Many lucky pets have been adopted as a result of this wonderful donation of promotion by 107.9 The Coyote! The Caldwells, who own The Coyote, initiated contact with Dogwood nearly five years ago from their station in Lebanon, offering to post photos of our adoptable pets on their website. Three years ago, in a search for new ways to promote shelter pets for adoption, I approached KC and Rounder for a regular spot on their show, hoping for a reduced rate for the advertising. The two men exchanged an amused look, and then Rounder said, “If you will bring the animals to the studio each week, we’ll do the spot for free.” And so, the pets were on! Turns out, they’re real “animal people” – you know the kind; adventurous (translated to mean “enjoying a little chaos”), fun loving, considered a bit crazy by some, and with an easy smile for everybody, especially furry-bodies! When I asked about their own favorite pets, the long list of names was recalled without effort, each pet’s name bringing distinct memories. Rounder recalled a story about one of his first pets as a child. There were elements of deceit and treachery in this story that cannot be repeated, but suffice it to say that a dog that desperately needed help was saved. To them, as with many of us, it comes naturally - Their hearts go out to disadvantaged animals. The thing is when they believe in something, they put their resources to work for it. Rounder says their business philosophy is to do the right thing first, then find a way to support it through sponsorships. They ‘re community minded business people who believe in helping where they can. Dog party! Seven dogs, one bag of treats! Roundman was swamped with dogs! Who knew KC was an accomplished kitten herder as well as a popular radio personality?! The Rev, a natural dog magnet, gets an exuberant kiss! RIPLEY on the air! Now he’s been adopted! We’re very grateful to the nice folks at 107.9 The Coyote! They help find wonderful homes for many of our pets, and help promote our main source of income, Dogwood Thrift Shop. They say that Dogwood originally got their attention because of its no-kill policy. They’ve seen other shelters throughout the midwest, and claim Dogwood is the nicest facility of its kind that they’ve seen. They worry about the dehumanizing effects of environments where workers must routinely euthanize those that depend on them. These are folks who believe in the power of happiness, and actively avoid bogging down in the sad stuff of the world– you know that just by listening to their show! They routinely fill their studio with guests – the more the merrier! They banter and jest, report off-beat funny news, play crazy games and loud music, and just generally have a good time with their guests and listeners! Dogwood’s no-kill policy was a natural attraction for them because it’s a happy place where pets and people can relax and connect. Happiness opens up so many possibilities! A new perspective to consider as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches; Dear God, Please have Martha Stewart include this tip in her magazine: “Next Thanksgiving, when you’re enjoying your turkey, why not serve your cat his own roasted quail, delicately stuffed with pan-seared jumbo Panamanian shrimp and surrounded by rosettes of foie gras nestled on little cups of catnip leaves, fresh-picked from the cold-frame herb garden I told you how to build last month. Your cat so richly deserves it!” ~Groucho (adapted from “Pet’s Letters to God” by Mark Bricklin) • • • • • • • • • • • • Linda Addotta and gang at Osage Beach Culvers for hosting a fun and successful fundraising “PUP-cake breakfast” in honor of National Homeless Pet Day. I’m happy to announce that someone’s finally found me—after 6 whole years here at Dogwood! I’VE FINALLY BEEN ADOPTED! I’m so grateful to Dogwood’s staff and volunteers for all the treats, toys, walks and TLC— and to YOU, for your donations and support so that Dogwood could care for me all those years! I have a lot of great canine friends back at the shelter. I hope my adoption gives them new hope that there really is someone out there for every one of us! A PLEA FROM THE KENNEL DOGS Dear Humans, My name is Brownie and I wanted a chance to clear some things up with you. You see, there are a lot of kennel dogs who never get a fair shake at impressing visitors to the shelter. We all try very hard to get your attention, but not speaking English is a hindrance to those efforts. So, the following are examples of what you see and hear compared to what we are actually doing and saying: • • • • • When we jump up on our kennels you see a dog with no manners; we just want our bellies rubbed and to know you see us. When you hear loud barking you think we are mean or loud; we are just saying hello and don't know what an "inside" voice is. When you see a dog hiding in the back of their kennel you think it's been abused or is skittish; actually we're giving up and keeping our feelings from getting hurt again. When the kennel doors open you hear everyone barking at the same time; we are just crying out "pick me, pick me!" When you see a dog turning circles in a kennel, you think there is something seriously wrong with that dog; what we are trying to tell you is we would love to go on a walk with you and get to know you better. Now that we've translated some typical misconceptions for you, we all hope to see you soon with fresh eyes and a new perspective! Remember, October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, when most of us can be adopted for $50; spayed or neutered, current vaccinations and microchipped. It’s a great time to check us out! Thanks for listening, Brownie & the rest of my kennel-mates. On The Rise Bakery & Bistro Mike & Cheryl Castle and their wonderful crew at the 2008 event! On The Rise Bakery & Bistro will again host the Pajama Breakfast for Dogwood Animal Shelter this coming December 12! This is one of Dogwood’s best fundraisers and a lot of fun! Watch our website for details; www.daslakeoftheozarks.com We recently received the following update on a recent adoption. We thank the parents of Ashley for sending this touching letter... “Enclosed (above, right) is a picture of Luke and our daughter. I am writing beAshley and Luke cause I wanted to share the outcome of this adoption. My daughter had been in a serious car wreck and lost a dear friend. Even though she was healing physically, emotionally she was not. Through the school’s work program with Dogwood Animal Shelter, she met Luke. For weeks we heard about this 80 pound Akita/Shephard mix she felt she had a connection with. We finally discussed it and my husband said, “you know, if we bring the dog home maybe it will help her heal. If we don’t, we will never know—and if it doesn’t, oh well. We’ll have another dog. Luke came home in April 2010. Ashley spent the next several months hiking the trails at Ha Ha Tonka Park with Luke at her side, painting at the park with Luke at her side; just being together. Eventually, the light in Ashley’s eyes has come back. Luke made a difference. He helped her heal. Luke will always have a place in our hearts for what he did, that we couldn’t seem to do. A BIG THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for caring for Luke for the year he was at the shelter. That’s why the dog is so joyful, and why the cat purrs. Mitch Spence photographs many of Dogwood’s dogs and cats as a donation aimed at helping promote them for adoption. With patience, talent and skill, she manages to beautifully portray their unique personalities. We’re grateful to her! Or find her link on Dogwood’s website at www.daslakeoftheozarks.com Thanks to Dogwood’s supporters, eighty area classrooms are receiving KINDnews this school year; a humane education monthly newsletter which is published by HSUS.
