Dear Friends,
When
the
vibrant
leaves fell from the trees
around Temple Israel this
past fall, our custodial
staff raked them into
dozens of paper lawn
bags. Throughout the
Rabbi Zimmerman neighborhood,
similar
bags lined up next to garbage cans. Lawn
by lawn and bag by bag, thousands of tons
of compostable yard waste were collected
and hauled away as part of the City of
Minneapolis’s waste removal program.
Those leaves will spend the winter becoming
nutrient-rich compost, and in the spring,
will help to nourish new shrubs, flower
beds, vegetable gardens and trees throughout
Minnesota.
The wisdom of this practice seems obvious
to us now. But twenty-six years ago, when I
first came to Temple Israel as Rabbi, things
were much different. In 1989, residents of
Minneapolis could voluntarily separate
their yard waste for special seasonal pickup by private waste haulers. Once a month,
residents could recycle newspapers, cans, and
glass bottles—but only if those newspapers
were tied into neat bundles, and the bottles
were separated by color. Plastics, tin foil,
office paper, food cartons, magazines, and
cardboard—and many, many leaves—went
into the garbage.
Judaism, at its heart, created the playbook
for what we today call “Environmentalism.”
Our texts teach us over and over that we are
stewards of the land that God has given us.
That means we are to care for the earth—in
doing so, we are partners with God. I could
fill the pages of every Hakol with primary
Torah, Talmud and rabbinic texts that speak
to the concepts of sustainability. For this
Hakol, we only have to look at what is right
in front of us: the celebration of Tu BiSh’vat.
Tu BiSh’vat is the Jewish Arbor Day—
the day we celebrate the planting of trees
and sustaining of the earth. Each year,
Tu BiSh’vat gives us the opportunity to
renew our commitment to environmental
awareness and “green” habits. On
Tu BiSh’vat this year, Temple will
be celebrating our commitment to
environmental responsibility in a brandnew way.
In early 2015, Temple Israel will begin
collecting organic waste for recycling.
Funded by a grant from Hennepin County,
this initiative aims to reduce Temple’s trash
output by 30% in one year, and we expect
that number to climb as we all learn new
habits for disposing of waste. You will soon
see throughout the Temple building new
waste containers specifically designated for
your compostable trash.
• You will find them in the restrooms—
the paper towels can be composted!
• You will find them in the lobby—
your paper coffee cup and cardboard
sleeve can be composted!
• You will find them in the kitchen—
food scraps from your Kiddush luncheon
can be composted!
• You will find them in Jacobs—napkins
from Oneg Shabbat can be composted!
At first, we may each have to take an extra
moment or two to be sure our compostable
trash and other recyclables go into the right
containers. Those moments can be, with
practice, moments of prayer—opportunities
to live our values and honor the holiday of
Tu BiSh’vat each and every day.
B’virkat Shalom—With Blessings of Peace,
Rabbi Marcia A. Zimmerman

The Women of Ashkenaz: Love, Labor, and Life in the Middle Ages
(1095-1348) in German-Speaking Lands
Saturday, February 21, 10:30 a.m. • Free and open to all
Join us for lively discussions of some of the most important
events in Jewish history with Dr. Joseph Goldman, a noted
historian and regular lecturer at Temple Israel.
Modern American Jewish women of all religious identities
can relate to their sisters living in the lands encompassing
German speakers, known as “Ashkenaz” in Hebrew. From
coping with religious massacres since 1095, to honoring
‘arranged marriages’ by family patriarchs, from keeping a
‘religious home’ and child rearing to partnering, to running
the family business with her husband or father, Ashkenaz
women from all social and cultural backgrounds were unique.
How and why will be questions raised for us to seek answers.
Kabbalah Sparks
Monday, February 23, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Join Rabbi Glaser for study and meditation on Kabbalistic
themes. Some familiarity with the basics of Jewish mysticism
is encouraged, but all inquisitive seekers are welcome. Free
and open to all.

Tu
BiSh’vat:
The
New
Year
for
the
Trees
Tuesday evening, February 3 - Wednesday, February 4, 2015
Tu BiSh’vat or the “New Year for Trees” is Jewish Arbor
Day. The holiday is observed on the 15th (tu) of the Hebrew
month of Sh’vat. Scholars believe that originally Tu BiSh’vat
was an agricultural festival, marking the emergence of
spring. In the 17th century, Kabbalists created a ritual for
Tu BiSh’vat that is similar to a Passover seder. Today, many
Jews hold a modern version of the Tu BiSh’vat seder each
year. The holiday also has become a tree-planting festival
in Israel, during which Israelis and Jews around the world
plant trees in honor or in memory of loved ones and friends.

Call Sisterhood President,
Beth Birke at 952-215-4076 for the latest
on Sisterhood membership or programs .
Letter from Sisterhood President, Beth Birke
Happy New Year to all of you! I want to thank you for
making our 2014 Sisterhood year an extraordinary experience
for all who participated. We have had some wildly successful
programming because of our stellar Executive Committee
and you, the attendees! The best news of course is that there
is more wonderful programming to come in the next
few months.
Our biggest focus will be on what lies just ahead, the
holiday of Purim. Purim is on Thursday, March 5, and we
at Sisterhood prepare months in advance! Purim fits in
perfectly with our mission:
“To bring together the women of Temple Israel to serve
our Temple, support our community and enrich our lives
throughout personal growth and friendship.”
Purim has four main Mitzvot and we, at Sisterhood, are
focused on #2 and #4 of these gems!!!!
1. MEGILLAT ESTHER – we read the story of Purim in the
evening and the next day. And whenever Haman is mentioned,
we make as much noise as possible to blot out his name and
his memory!
2. SENDING GIFTS OF FOOD to at least one friend or relative,
because Purim is a time of love and friendship between Jews.
3. GIVING GIFTS OF MONEY TO THE POOR because Purim
is a time of sharing and caring and helping.
4. EATING A FESTIVE PURIM MEAL – the special holiday
meal eaten on Purim afternoon.
We are going to bake hamantaschen by the hundreds and
sell them at our pop-up bake shop in the Temple lobby,
and offer shipping across country. (Check off mitzvah
number 2!)
Please consider volunteering your time to help create these
delicacies (or even help with packaging, shipping or sales)
and make new friends at Temple. Marsha Seltz and Kayla
Wright will welcome you with open arms for your time
and talents!
Sisterhood will also be offering more chicken soup and
Challah making classes throughout the next few months to
tantalize your inner epicurean! Watch your email and check
our Facebook page. Deb Bomberg and Jenni Friedman will
be happy to talk with you in detail for more information.
(Check off mitzvah number 4!)
So there you have it! We look forward to fulfilling our
mission…meeting our fellow Temple members, doing some
mitzvot together and creating some great friendships and
memories along the way.
Hag Sameach!

Eighth Grade Na’aseh V’nishma Students celebrated their commitment to
community and global service at We Day, a thrilling gathering of youth volunteers.
On November 12, 2014, students and staff attended this one-day conference,
sponsored by Free the Children. Students earned tickets by their acts of
volunteerism and by promoting community and global efforts. Na’aseh V’nishma
students were recognized for their social action and social justice efforts of
Tikkun Olam.
The conference included inspirational speeches from several celebrities, such
as Malala Yousafzai, Kweku Mandela, Magic Johnson, Spencer West, JR Martinez
and Martin Sheen. It also included performers, such as Band Perry and iLuminate.
We Day hosted more than 18,000 students from over 500 schools across
Minnesota and the entire Midwest.
There were several Temple Israel members who helped make this event
possible. Among them were Minnesota co-chairs Dean Phillips and Hutton
Phillips; Minnetonka Moccasins (the Miller family), who sponsored a scholarship;
Zoe Stern, Associate Director of Business Development for Free the Children/
We Day; and Ellen Luger, General Mills Vice President of Global Philanthropy
and Volunteerism.
Hannah is the daughter of Bobbi &
Robert Polk; the granddaughter of Jane
& the late Mark Anderson, Robert Eder,
Sandra & the late Frederic Polk; and the
sister of Macey . Hannah enjoys playing

A Connection to Community
Jean & Phil Freeman Oneg Shabbat Fund
“Food was always important
to my parents, Jean & Phil, and
especially to my dad in his last
years. My siblings and I thought
that a donation that involved food
in some way would be appropriate.
We always had a strong foundation
with religion, and while my parents
were pillars of Mount Zion Temple,
I have been involved with Temple
completing it. We want to provide
food for the onegs on those weeks
when there are no B’nai Mitzvah
and to help those who need it for
their joyous occasions.”

An Attitude of Giving
The most quoted portion of the Mishneh Torah is the
“Laws of Gifts to the Poor.” Maimonides lists eight levels
of tzedakah that guide us in helping those in need and in
creating a more just and righteous world. We are urged
to aspire to higher and higher levels of giving.
1.
A person gives but is not happy to do so.
2.
A person gives cheerfully but gives less than he should.
3.
A person gives but only when asked by a person in need.
4.
A person gives without being asked. The recipient knows
who gave the help, and the giver knows who benefited.
5.
A person gives without knowing the recipient. The
recipient knows the giver.
6.
A person gives knowing the recipient. The recipient
does not know the giver.
7.
A person contributes anonymously to the tzedakah
fund, which is then distributed to the person in need.
8.
The highest level of charity is to give money to prevent
another person from being in need. For example,
teaching a person a trade or finding them a job.
