Stitches in the Sand - Beach Cities Quilters Guild
Stitches in the Sand MEETING DATE — Thursday, May 14, 2015 MEETING START - 6:30 PM GUEST SPEAKER - JENNIFER RAPACKI Based in Santa Maria, CA, Jennifer Rapacki is a tech-savvy fabric artisan specializing in combining traditional quilting techniques with technology driven designs and inkjet printing on fabric. Jennifer teaches classes in Photoshop Elements for Quilters, Electric Quilt, Fabric Weaving & Tatting. She also has a lecture which explores the use of modern technology in quilting and includes a trunk show featuring quilts showing some of the possibilities. PLEASE JOIN US FOR DINNER WITH JENNIFER RAPACKI ON THURSDAY EVENING, MAY 14 AT 4:30 P.M. PEPPINO’S ITALIAN RESTAURANT 27782 VISTA DEL LAGO, MISSION VIEJO RSVP – MARTHA HURLBURT 949-349-9437 marthahsews@gmail.com What a wonderful Members' Showcase we had in April. Having the two different friendship groups really gave us quite a variety of techniques and ideas. The Bobbin Babes have been together a long time and have had quite an opportunity to build up a great deal of UFOs. We probably all feel better after seeing the double digits displayed by some of the ladies regarding their number of UFOs. I know I do! The Batik Freaks have only been meeting for a short period of time, but have really been busy. Friendship groups are a wonderful way of sharing ideas and developing relationships with other quilters. I hope everyone enjoyed the presentations by these fine groups. I am writing this before our Spring Tea and Tour event, but I know it will be a wonderful event. Thank you to Julie Greenspan and her committee for all of their hard work. Thank you for the input regarding the dues increase that I talked about at the April meeting. I am grateful for all of the suggestions and ideas. Any other comments you may have are welcome and should be sent to movedandleftnoforwardingaddress@cox.net. Just kidding! I like to see if anyone is actually reading the newsletter. Contact me anytime at gailtbrunell@gmail.com and thank you again for your support. My email address MUST include my middle initial t or the email will go to a different and very confused Gail Brunell. A QUICK THANK YOU As I write, the Spring Tea Event is quickly approaching! I would like to take a moment to thank and acknowledge those who worked so hard to make this time-honored member’s event so successful. It really does take a village, here are my villagers! A special thank you to Candy Crain for her efforts in bringing us the amazing donation from the Pugh family and to Margaret Gordon, financial wizard and credit card enabler! PAST PRESIDENT NO RULES CHALLENGE Now that the wonderful challenge quilts have been turned in, judged, and celebrated, it is time for a challenge for those who don't like rules. This year's challenge theme is Off-Beat National holidays. Many of us really enjoyed that special exhibit at Road to California (who knew there was a National Mitten Tree Day holiday?) and our imaginations are ready to go. Did you know that April 12 is National Windy Day day? Here is what you need to do: 1) Select an offbeat holiday;(No--it can't be Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween) 2)sign-up with Elaine Pappas-Puckett either at Guild, by phone (831-1072) or via email jelj@cox.net.3) Make your quilt and bring it to the October meeting. Make it whatever size you want (12 inches by 12 inches is just fine). Use whatever fabric you want. Put the name and date of the holiday on your quilt. (If you don't want it on their permanently, then make it removable). You can google off beat national holidays or weird national holidays for some suggestions. OR, if you know you want to make a fall quilt or a Halloween quilt, google words like "national pumpkin day" or "national ghost day" and find a holiday that matches the quilt you want to make. Also, off beat can include holidays like National Nurses Day, Flag Day,etc. Call Elaine Pappas-Puckett with questions. WORKSHOPS JUNE: Maggie Ball. This month we well be using a new template-free method for cutting and piecing Kaleidoscope blocks. It is easy and fast and does not require triangular rulers. Cut enough kite and wedge shaped pieces from 10” squares to yield sixteen or more 8” blocks and play with the layout. The design possibilities are numerous and are fun to explore. This will be a one day class, held on Friday June 12th at Community Presbyterian Church in San Juan Capistrano. Class fee is $40.00, plus a $5.00 pattern fee, which will be paid to the teacher during class. JULY: Join Susan for her most popular workshop and discover the many joys of working with colour in an exciting new technique that is full of surprises. Stacked and sliced fabrics combined with bold, contrasting strips create visual excitement in your quilt. Students can work with a planned colour palette or make it scrappy, every fabric is perfect for a Shattered Angles quilt! Finished size and layout is flexible, make it big or small. Students will be given lots of options for quilt design and finishing. Shattered Angles is the perfect quilt for fat quarters or a secret stash of wonderful fabrics! Susan’s book “Accent on Angles-Easy Strip Set Quilts” from Martingale & Co. is based on this technique. AUGUST: Jacquie Gering. Want to quilt your quilts on your home machine and maybe free motion quilting isn't for you? Come discover the joy and creative possibilities of quilting with your walking foot. Straight-linequilting has a long history and is making a comeback in both modern and traditional quilts. Learn tips and tricks for successful quilting with your walking foot along with creative quilting designs that can be accomplished on your home machine. Please give them to Sandy Corbin or Kathleen Walker. These will be used as a fundraiser for the guild. Thanks, Sandy and Kathleen PHILANTHROPY REPORT Beach Cities Quilters Guild had another great month of Philanthropy work. We donated 52 quilts, 20 NICU blankets and 28 handmade stuffed animals. 33 baby quilts and the stuffed animals went to a baby shower for Camp Pendleton families. The remaining quilts went to: St. Michael’s Hospice (5), UCI Oncology (4), Prototypes (4), Royale Therapeutic Treatment Center (2), VA (2), and United Cerebral Palsy (2). The NICU blankets went to Saddleback Hospital. BCQG received a lovely thank you plaque from Operation Showers of Appreciation – the organization that presents the majority of the baby showers for the military families. Last year we gave them almost 200 baby quilts, plus lots of other items (baby clothes, handmade toys, commercially made stuffed animals, receiving blankets, burp cloths). Because we have been short on long-arming capability recently, we have been working on alternative quilt styles. We have made numerous strip quilts for little kids and babies. We have used Jenny Doan’s quilt-as-you-go technique posted on the Missouri Star Quilts website. We have also used a process of baffling, which uses strips (great use of leftover strips) of batting. One of our members just made a lovely quilt-as-you-go quilt using a pattern from Prairie Sky Quilting, called “Easy Diamonds Quilt”. We’re having a good time expanding our horizons. We really appreciate all the domestic machine quilting on some of the small quilts. Check out the Philanthropy page on the BCQG website. Thanks to Michelle Naas, it is being updated. Our thanks to Candy Crain and Brenda Wey for all their work on making the many changes. Pictures will follow. In the meantime, there are links to preparing quilts for the quilting, the philanthropy process and the United Cerebral Palsy Recognition page. Our next sewing day will be Monday, May 4th, at the Laguna Niguel Library, 30341 Crown Valley Parkway, Laguna Niguel, 92677. We will be there from 10:30 until 4:00. Please join us for as much of the day as fits into your schedule. It’s a great way to make friends and participate in such a good cause. Phone: 949-306-5450 MONTHLY MINI April Monthly Mini won by Stacy Russell May Monthly Mini - Keri Follmer Sewing runs in my family and I love quilting. I started hand sewing doll clothes when I was about five or six and learned from my grandma Elsa who was an amazing, self-taught seamstress who made her own patterns and Vogue-style clothes. She sewed lots of quilty-things for my dolls. I would get a Barbie-size version of whatever outfits the actresses wore on the Charlies Angels and Starsky & Hutch TV shows. My great grandmother was a hand quilter from Arkansas and I have a few of her quilts; they are treasures to me. I got the quilting bug in 1996, made quilts for my baby girls on my Singer, and attended a Beach Cities meeting after spending a lot of money at Leah’s in Mission Viejo. I sew on my late grandmother’s Viking, which she gave me when she couldn’t use it anymore. I love applique and scrappy quilts, but have switched to perfecting machine applique due to my carpal tunnel issues. My husband Russ and I have been together for 27 years, we have two daughters ages 16 and 13. They came to Guild meetings when they were very little and thought it was a “cookie club” because of the all the treats on the Hospitality table. “Blooms and Vines” is peachy-pink sweet and was designed by Lori Smith. It’s hand quilted with a “big stitch”echo design. I love the rustic look and hope BCQG members do too. SECRET SISTERS: Thanks to all those who participated in April's Reduce, Reuse and Recycle gift exchange! Our theme for May is May Magazine. So bring a copy of your favorite magazine (which doesn't have to be sewing/quilting related). Be creative! Show us your other hobbies and interests (gardening, home decor, cooking, etc.) Please don't forget to write your name on your gift; you want your fellow guild member to know who it's from! Mike and I enjoyed 54 years of marriage filled with wonderful memories. Many of you have expressed your sympathy and empathy as you too have cared for and lost your husbands to debilitating illness. I appreciate your support and examples of your success in living positive and productive lives. I hope quilting will provide comfort and creative energy to carry me through this difficult time. Snowflakes BCQG Block of the Month May 2015 – Block # 7 By Barbara Green MAKE 2 BLOCKS Unfinished Block Size: 20‐½”x 6 ½” Finished Block Size: 20” x 6” Supplies: 22x”x 8” Background Fabric A 22x”x 8” Background Fabric B Assorted Fabric Scraps of White for Snowflakes Directions: From each of the background fabrics cut two 6‐½” x 7‐½” pieces, and one 6‐½” x 6‐½” piece. The snowflakes are cut actual size and are applied using raw edge fusible appliqué. They do not need to be reversed. Trace snowflakes using the templates onto paper‐backed Fusible Web (Heat and Bond Light was used). Following the manufacturer instructions, apply the paper‐backed Fusible Web onto the wrong side of each fabric. Cut on the drawn line. Make 6 snowflakes, total (3 of each style). Fuse snowflakes to right side of the background fabrics, 3 of a style onto same color fabric. Refer to the picture for placement as necessary. Edge stitch with straight stitch around snowflakes. Sew snowflakes into rows, making sure 7‐½” piece is length‐wise, top to bottom, same color. Insert 6‐½” piece with opposite snowflake pattern, and opposite color into center of row. Make second row, same as first, using remaining snowflakes and fabric. You end up with 2 rows, each 3 snowflakes, different styles, colors, in centers. Trim completed block to 20‐½” x 6 ½”.
