Our mission will be led by Fr. Michael Zielke. Please plan to join Fr. Michael as he helps us learn the
process of growing closer to God. He will be with us for three evenings starting on Sunday, September 13th at 6:00 PM & Monday & Tuesday, September 14th and 15th at 7:00 PM. Refreshments
will be served on Tuesday evening following the last session.
The Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is error, the truth;
Where there is doubt, the faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

The “Prayer of St. Francis” is a well known prayer that uses
symbols and ideas to create a prayer that teaches us how to be
people of God. It gives us a chance to pause, pray and reflect
on who it is that we are and what it is that we are created to do.
It first appeared around the year 1915 A.D. and embodies the
spirit of St. Francis of Assisi’s simplicity and poverty. The prayer
is a teaching that teaches us to walk in the footsteps of Saint
Francis and become more of a person of God. We can look to
St. Francis as a role model and teacher and can follow his
teachings to lead a better life style for ourselves and others.
Feast of the Nativity of Mary
The Catholic Church celebrates the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary on its traditional fixed
date of September 8, nine months after the December 8 celebration of her Immaculate
Conception as the child of Saints Joachim and Anne.
Mary was born to be the mother of the Savior of the world, the spiritual mother of all men,
and the holiest of God's creatures. Because of her Son's infinite merits, she was conceived and born immaculate and full of grace. Through her, Queen of heaven and of
earth, all grace is given to men. Through her, by the will of the Trinity, the unbelieving receive the gift of faith; the afflicted are tendered the works of mercy; and the members of
Christ grow in likeness of their Head. In Mary all human nature is exalted. We rejoice in
her birthday, as the Church has done from the earliest times.
"Today the barren Anna claps her hands for joy, the earth radiates with light, kings sing
their happiness, priests enjoy every blessing, the entire universe rejoices, for she who is
queen and the Father's immaculate bride buds forth from the stem of Jesse".

Reflecting on God’s Word
Perhaps you saw the movie The King’s Speech about the future king of England, George VI, whose speech impediment
was so severe that it reduced him to tears of anger and humiliation. His wife, Elizabeth, found a speech therapist who
was able to help him by using some unorthodox methods, such as rolling around on the floor, cursing, and singing. It is
a profoundly moving experience when King George finally addresses his people over the radio and delivers a speech
flawlessly, giving courage to his people on the eve of World War II.
The story in this Gospel tells us how Jesus helped a man to find his voice. The man whose tongue Jesus touched with
his spittle (an element believed to ward off demons) came to speak “plainly.” Another word for “plainly” would be
“rightly,” in the sense of correctly or truly. “Be opened!” Jesus says, and it happens (Mark 7:34). The man then spoke
the truth of what Jesus did for him, and honored him.
As we hold firm to our faith in the Lord, Jesus calls us to both speak and act “rightly” in the eyes of the world, caring for
those who have little and treating them with the same dignity as those who have much. We are called to imitate Jesus
by reaching out tenderly to touch those who have been wounded by life and burdened by the rejection of others. Helping others to hear the sound of love can be done in many quiet ways and with little fanfare.

God’s Word Today
Each week when we gather for Mass the Lord has something to say to us. Today's Gospel recounts the familiar story of
the curing of the deaf man who had a speech impediment. This miracle story is surely meant for us to ponder the meaning of what occurs when we are "opened," like that deaf man, to the power of God. We need look no further than the
second reading to discover this meaning. Saint James gets to the heart of it all when he tells us that God chose the
poor in this world to be rich inheritors of the kingdom of heaven. James exhorts us to treat people fairly and not to judge
based on outward appearances. At our baptism, we experienced what the Church calls the "Ephphatha Rite," a rite that
is inspired by today's Gospel story. At that time, the priest or deacon touched our ears and mouth, praying that we
would "be open" to professing the faith we hear. Let us pray that we will see with new eyes, hear with new ears, and

WE WELCOME OUR NEW SUPERINTENDENT
Last week Archbishop Blase J. Cupich announced that
Jim Rigg, Ph.D., has been appointed Superintendent of
the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools effective
October 5, 2015. Dr. Rigg was most recently the Director
of Education Services and Superintendent for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Catholic Schools for the past five
years and has seen it through a five year Strategic Plan
with measurable improvements in academics, Catholicity
and financial stability. Prior to his work at the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Dr. Rigg worked in Catholic school
systems in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Memphis,
Tennessee. Dr. Rigg has received several awards for his
work in education, including the Nancy A. Hemminger
“Hope” Award for Inclusive Education, Cincinnati and
the Lighthouse Award for Exceptional Leadership, Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs, among others. As Superintendent, Dr. Rigg will oversee the 230 Catholic
Schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago, which serves
close to 83,000 students and is the largest private school
system in the U.S. and the recipient of the greatest number of U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon
Awards of any school system in the nation.
WHAT’S NEW AT COS THIS YEAR?
We are continuing to enhance our Technology Department. We recently purchased 25 HP all in one computers
for “The SEA” (The Student Enhanced Academic Lab).
That will free up 24 computers to be placed in classrooms
to assist in our Blended Learning Technological curriculum. We are purchasing 25 portable notebooks that can
be moved into classrooms as needed or used in the new
third technology lab on the first floor for an entire class.
Our students supplement their textbook learning with
computer licenses for the following online programs for
reading and math: Think CERCA, Sumdog and Think
Through Math.
SEEKING - CRAFTERS AND VENDORS for the annual COS Craft Fair and Vendor Show. The show will be
held on Sat., Nov. 7, 2015, in the school gym from 9 to 3.
The show will feature a food concession stand, raffles,
bake sale and more. The fee for an 8 x 8 space is $30. If
you would like to participate, please contact Karen

Sunday School
Sessions will begin on Sunday for children between the ages of
2-5 during the 10:00 & 11:30 Masses. We gather to read Bible
stories, sing songs and do crafts. Juice and crackers are also
provided.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Children in grades 1-4 will leave church to hear the Sunday
readings and discuss. They return to church during the Preparation of the Gifts.
Religious Education
Let us help you with formal training of your elementary school
young people. Religious education and sacrament preparation
classes will begin on Monday, Sept. 14th at 6 PM. Registration
forms are available on the website or in the Rectory office and
can be returned next Sunday after all the masses.
Volunteers are needed for all of our children's programs. All
volunteers are required to complete a virtus training course.
There is a class scheduled for Thursday, September 17th at 7
PM in McMahon Hall. You may register online at
www.virtus.org. Please contact the Rectory office 708 333-3550
if you are interested.
ADULTS
RCIA classes will begin soon. The process is for those who
would like to become Catholic, those who have been baptized
in another faith and also those that have been baptized but
have not completed the Sacraments of initiation (Confirmation
& Eucharist). If you know of someone that may be interested
contact the Rectory office at 708 333-3550.
