NY Correction History Society images of NYC DOC Black History Month event at Rikers Island’s George Motchan Detention Center, February 14, 2011. NYC DOC has held perhaps its largest celebration of Black History Month. It was highlighted by ceremonies at George Motchan Detention Center Feb. 14, 2011. The event included honoring former DOC Commissioner Jacqueline McMickens, remarks by Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott and Rev. Alfonso Wyatt, and personal essays read aloud by their authors, DOC staffers. Printed program, front & back. The program card included some “Artwork produced by inmates attending East River Academy.” That caption also appeared on DOC’s Black History Month poster displayed on a tripod near the stage in the George Motchan Memorial Auditorium. His remarks focused on each individual doing all he or she can to help and inspire others, leading the way just as Black leaders have in the past. “In the end,” Walcott said, “this job will be over in three years, and I will still be a Black Man. The Rev. Wyatts: Like mother, like son. Offering benediction, Rev. Alfonso Wyatt cited decades-long work of his mother, the Rev. May Wyatt, helping Rikers Island’s female inmates. His theme: ‘Your children plus my children equals our children.’ The Black History Month ceremonies came to a close with presentation of a certificate of appreciation to Rev.
