VC & MD’s Message
Very warm greetings to all the readers of Concreting Times.
The general elections of our country got over as scheduled by end of May 2014. As expected, we have a strong single party government in the
centre. I am sure this will bring in lot of political stability in our country. This party has promised to initiate many reforms in order to curtail inflation
and improve the economy. The sentiments are quite positive all over. The stock market has also responded very positively touching all time high
index figures.
Even though the budget announced by the current government in the beginning of July 2014 is a bit lukewarm, there are many positive indicators
towards development, growth and reforms. Many announcements made during this budget like the diamond quadrilateral project, releasing
order for construction of over 8500 kms of NHAI roads, investment on border roads, port connectivity and creation of 100 smart cities are some of
the positive steps towards infrastructure development.
Besides this, based on the interactions the Construction Equipment Manufacturers Association and the Builders’
Association have been having with bureaucrats and senior ministers, it gives us immense confidence that our industry
will again start seeing growth in the coming years.
At Schwing Stetter India, we have been investing heavily in the past years on substantially improving our efficiency as
well as improving the quality of our products. I am very pleased to communicate through this medium that a recent
delegation of senior personnel from our parent company inspected the products manufactured by us in India with
respect to specification and quality and have highly appreciated our products, which will now open up a new
opportunity for Schwing Stetter India in exporting our products to various other overseas markets through our
parent company.
All these positive developments give us enormous confidence for further growth of our market and our company.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the readers Eid Mubarak, Happy Ganesh Chaturthi and a
Joyous Dussehra.
All the best,
Vice Chairman & Managing Director - SSI

Indian cities are among the world's fastest developing cities in terms
of infrastructure, economy, and even population, which calls for a
better transportation system. The transportation system of India is
slowing taking a pragmatic shift to Metros. Kolkata was the first city to
get rapid transit system in India, put in motion almost 25 years ago.
Concreting the Metro
Chennai is the second city in India to run a rapid transit system in
1995, Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System is an elevated railway line
running within the city. Followed by Delhi Metro rail running across
the national capital region. Currently metro rail projects are running
in various parts of the country. After the success of the Delhi metro,
26 cities in the country are at various stages of planning and
implementing the metro rail.
Metro Elevated corridors (Viaduct) are meticulously designed
structures developed with immaculate understanding of high
strength concrete. The elevated structures consist of precast
segment made using special type of concrete. The State-of-the art
construction method helps to make Pre-cast Pre-stressed concrete
segments. These segments are of different types like Box Girder
Segment, Spine, Wings, Single Segmental U, Single Segmental Box,
Segmental Box, Segmental U, Full U girder, Pre-cast pre-stress I
girders, Cast in Situ Span, and Special span.
Schwing at Metro Projects
Concreting is one of the major work in metro construction, Schwing
Stetter ranges of concrete equipments are used for concreting the
metros across India. Majority of Construction work in metro project
are differentiated into Elevated Corridor Structures, Elevated Railway
Stations, Underground Tunnel Construction, Underground Railway
Station, and Underground to elevated Interlinking junctions.
6
Concreting the Way of Life
These pre-casted segments are prepared by casting concrete in
reusable molds in a controlled environment. Then it is transported to
construction site and set in place. Some of the pre-cast structures
used in elevated metro stations are Platform sections, Precast posttensioned cross girders and Pre-cast post-tensioned L-beams.
Schwing Stetter Concrete Trailer pumps are used to concrete the floor
inside the tunnel to lay tracks for metro trains.
The elevated corridor also requires concrete pile cap, pier and cross
heads (cast in situ/pre cast pier heads). Schwing Stetter's Batching
Plants like CP30 and M1 are used for per-casting various segments for
the elevated corridors. Schwing truck mounted boom pumps like S20,
S36 are used for concreting the pile cap, pier and cross heads.
Underground Metro Stations are constructed using massive amount
of concrete in which Schwing contribution is enormous. Underground
Stations are constructed using cut-and-cover methods in two
different ways “top-down” or “bottoms-up” approach. For the
underground stations, diaphragm walls and plunge columns are
constructed to ensure that soil does not collapse on the edges as the
excavation progresses.
Underground Tunnel Construction is carried out using Tunnel Boring
Machines (TBM) which not only excavates the tunnel but also installs
precast concrete liners (tunnel rings). As the machine advances its
movement drilling, pre-cast concrete tunnel liners are installed. The
pre-casted tunnel rings are also made of special type of concrete
which are designed to withhold various types of loads.
The construction of the diaphragm wall is carried out from ground
level using special type of concrete; Schwing Transit Mixers are
employed to transport concrete for the construction of these walls.

Achievement
240 meters vertical placement
by 21 year old pump
Record in Long Distance
Pumping by Schwing SP4800
Schwing Stetter SP4800 Concrete Pump was recently involved in
creating a record by pumping concrete to a horizontal distance of
2416 meters at Sainj Hydroelectric Project, Himachal Pradesh. The
Project is being developed by the state-run Himachal Pradesh Power
Corporation Limited (HPPCL) and construction contract was awarded
to HCC (Hindustan Construction Company Ltd).
Schwing Stetter BP4000 E a 21 year old [Year of Manufacture : 1996]
pump recently did a concreting achievement by pumping concrete to
55th floor [240 meters] at Ahuja Tower Project in Mumbai. The pump
which was deployed for concrete pouring at 52 floor did till the
maximum tower height of 55 floors [240 meters]. The tower is
constructed by L&T ECC and BP4000 pumped high grade concrete of
M40 & M60 for this massive structure. The 21 year old BP4000
pumped a total of 3263 m3 of concrete with horizontal length of 51
meters, vertical height of 240 meters along with Separate placing
boom.
The project involves the construction of tunnel with a length of six km
and height of four meters. HCC used M25 Grade concrete for tunnel
linings in this project. Schwing SP4800 was deployed to do this record
concreting during which it achieved 2416 meter horizontal distance
by pumping 90m3 of concrete using DN150 pipelines. SP4800
Concrete pump has dit a total of 7868 m3 till date in this project.
Batching Plant CP30 with Star Batcher was used for producing
concrete for the mega pour.
Guinness world record by Schwing Boom Pumps
The massive mat pour required a fleet of 208 trucks that each made
10 to 14 concrete drops for a total of 2,100 trips over the 18 ½ hour
period. All of the concrete was provided by eight concrete batch
plants operating at full capacity and located within a 20-mile radius of
the job site. The skyscraperWilshire Grand is expected to be
completed in 2016 and opened to the public in 2017. The Wilshire
Grand will be 1,100 ft. tall, to include a 900-room hotel, office and
convention space as well as five levels of subterranean parking.
Conco broke the Guinness World Record for the largest continuous
mat pour in 18 ½ hours (1 ½ hours under the projected time). To
verify the event, there was an official Guinness World Records
adjudicator on-site. The mat pour was for the new Wilshire Grand
Center that is being constructed in downtown Los Angeles, and is
slated to become the tallest building in the U.S. west of the
Mississippi. A total of 16208 m3 of concrete was places at a speed of
876m3/hr. during this world record. According to Conco Companies
one of the stars of the show was Schwing KVM52 2525- 8 boom
pumps which started the pour. Schwing S46 SX was also pumped in
this site, each of these featured pumps approximately pumped 2,000
yards smoothly, safely and trouble free.

Project Abroad
New Stadium Races Toward Super Bowl 50
The new Levis Stadium , a $1.2 billion structure, is under construction
in Santa Clara California after the ground breaking ceremony in April
2012. This will be the home for Super Bowl 2016, the 50th
Anniversary of the NFL's biggest game. The Design/Build team of
Turner Construction and Devcon Construction (Turner/Devcon, A
Joint Venture), Santa Clara, chose ACPA member CONCO of Concord,
California to help meet the ambitious schedule with their fleet of
concrete pumps.
“There were just a lot of smaller pours , we pumped about 500 yards
per day,” Fink noted, “Most of the concrete was a standard 4,000 psi
mix, with 8,000 psi at shear lugs” The S 58 SX utilizes Super X
outriggers, which were particularly valuable on the crowded site.
Mr.Brandt said, “Pumping set-ups are both inside and outside the
structure, so the narrow 29' 2” front outrigger spread, and the ability
to shoot the curved outriggers out and around other equipment and
obstacles, are a big help.” The ability to provide smooth concrete
output for the precision pours was aided by the Schwing 2525H-6
twin cylinder, all-hydraulic concrete pump with variable output to 213
cubic yards per hour at just 22 strokes per minute. “We also
appreciate the fuel efficiency of the Schwing pumps,” Brandt noted.
Fink said, “In the case of our operators, with a 12 hour limit in work
that California requires, the pump ran continuously like this for nearly
twenty four hours.” Pump maintenance is performed on site and,
“there have been very few issues,” according to Brandt. “These
pumps are real workhorses.“We worked as close to 24 hours per day
as we could and nobody balked at it,” commented Fink. “I don't think
there was any other team that could have done a better job.” This
sentiment was shared by Dave Masel, Turner/Devcon's general
superintendent. “They did an absolutely fantastic job considering the
challenging schedule and simultaneously servicing four adjacent
building sites.”
The construction, supposed to be ready by 2014, was divided into
four separate projects the two midfield sections and the two end zone
sections as opposed to the traditional method of building stadiums in
a “wedding cake”, circling the stadium one section at a time. The
foundation for all four segments had to be built simultaneously. “We
had to excavate 60,000 yards of dirt, reinforce and pump 18,000
cubic yards of concrete, backfill and build a half-mile of perimeter
wall, ” according to Dan Fink, CONCO project manager, “in 40
calendar days.” The project specification simplies that this is the
largest structural steel building under construction in the United
States. “Twenty-three semi truckloads of anchor bolts were needed
for the foundation,” according to Fink, “and the tolerance was oneeighth of an inch.” “Throughout the foundation's construction the
majority of the pumping was accomplished by our Schwing S 58 SX,”
according to Gary Brandt, CONCO pump superintendent VP of
marketing for the Bay Area. “We also used our Schwing KVM 52 and S
47 SX throughout the project.” The S 58 SX's Overhead Roll and Fold
boom with188-feet of reach provided the most coverage from a single
set-up, but it was the ability to move to other locations quickly that
was the most valuable.
Pre-cast sections make up the tiers supporting the 68,500 seats. In
order to reach to the upper deck stairways, crews have placed as
much as 300-feet of line connected to the fully extended boom of the
S 58 SX.The concrete work is expected to be completed in October
and will total approximately 60,000 cubic yards.
“This is one of the fastest I have ever built, and I understand it is the
6th fastest ever.” Dan Fink summed it up best, “It's amazing what you
can accomplish when no one cares who gets the credit.”

Tips on Batching Plant Maintenance
Concrete Batching Plants produce concrete by combining various Aggregates, Cement, Water and Admixtures. Today, portable concrete Batching
Plants are able to move from construction site to construction site, supplying the site with freshly made concrete. In order to maintain a high output
from a concrete Batching Plant, managers have to have a deep understanding of how the plant works, how to prevent damages and how to perform
preventative maintenance and care.
A well-managed concrete Batching Plant will be efficient, save costs and cut down on labour time, while ensuring high quality and consistent
concrete production, better machine utilisation, higher return on investment.
Tips for Managing a Concrete Batching Plant:
Ensure all the persons working in the Batching plant environment
has enough knowledge and aware of the safety systems of the
Batching plant.
Never by-pass the safety
systems of the Batching plant
even for temporary operations.
Don't let unauthorized persons to operate the plant.
Use proper tools and tackles for
carrying any maintenance
activity in the plant.
Ensure that the operator has thorough knowledge about the
machine.
All the problems reported has to
be attended daily for trouble
free operation of the Batching
plant. (Each 8 hour shift)
Ensure regular preventive maintenance
is done.
Use only genuine original spare parts to
enhance the life of the Batching Plant.
Ensure regular check up is done before starting the Batching
Plant and proper cleaning is
done at the end of the
production daily.
Replace the Lubricants and Spare parts
as per the recommended life period.
Keep critical spare parts in stock to prevent breakdown of the
plant.
Safety PPE'S (Safety Helmets,
Shoe's, Hand gloves and
Goggles) should be used by
the persons who are working
with the plant.
All mix recipes should be fed in to the batching plant after
approval of plant in-charge or Quality in-charge to avoid
overloading of weigher's and mixer.
