Visit, O blessed Lord, this home with the gladness of your presence. Bless all who live or visit here with the gift of your love and grant that we may manifest your love to each other and to all whose lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you; guide, comfort, and strengthen us in peace, O Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen The Epiphany of the Lord A Word from Our Pastor Would you like to better understand Jesus and embody his way of life? Join us for the next scripture study at Saint Matthew. We will study Fr. Robert Barron’s “Priest, Prophet, King.” The Tuesday evening sessions start Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. The Thursday morning sessions start Jan. 29 at 9 a.m. If you haven’t signed up yet, please contact Leslie Kerr at 823-0112 or l_f_kerr@comcast.net. Question of the Week Question for Children: In your life, who helps you to see Jesus in other people, such as a classmate or a friend? Question for Youth: The star guided the Magi to Jesus. What people or events have guided you in your relationship with Jesus? Question for Adults: How this past week did you demonstrate God’s love? Visits to the Sick If anyone is ill or has an ill family member, homebound or hospitalized, and wants a visit, contact Loral Tansy in the parish office. Mass and Adoration on Wednesday Join us every Wednesday for Mass at 6 p.m. and Eucharistic Adoration from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Generous Hearts Thought “Once one chooses to become a disciple of Jesus Christ, stewardship is not an option.” Bishop John J. McRaith Solemnity of the Epiphany: Merry Twelfth Day of Christmas! We began the twelve -day celebration of Christmas by reading Luke’s account of the Christmas story. This is the gospel passage read for Midnight Mass each year. It is the story with the shepherds. Epiphany closes out the twelve-day celebration by reading Matthew’s Christmas story, the visit of the Magi. “Epiphany” is a Greek word meaning “to show” or “manifestation.” With Epiphany Jesus is manifested as the messiah sent for all the peoples of the world. The magi represent the gentiles of the world. For this reason, Epiphany is regarded as the climax of the Christmas celebration. Some may still wonder why we do not celebrate Epiphany on Jan. 6, the traditional date, even though we haven’t celebrated it on that date in the United States since 1969. When Pope Paul VI issued the revised liturgical calendar in 1969, as requested by Vatican Council II, it was asked that all countries that do not celebrate Epiphany as a Holy Day celebrate the feast on the first Sunday after Jan. 1. Thus for us, Epiphany can come as early as Jan. 2 or as late as Jan. 8 depending on what day Jan. 1 lands. This either truncates the twelve-day observance or elongates it. This should not matter though, for the twelve days do not celebrate chronos (chronological time), but kairos (sacred time, time beyond chronological time where counting seconds is of no consequence). The Close of the Christmas Season: Though the celebration of the Day of Christmas reaches its high point with Epiphany, the Christmas season lingers on until next Sunday when we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The Baptism of the Lord is another manifestation feast that once again proclaims Jesus as the beloved Son of the Father sent to all the nations. Liturgically the Baptism of the Lord is the last day of the Christmas season. Merry Christmas--still! Epiphany Home Blessing and School Epiphany Mass: When Saint Matthew School returns from Christmas break, we will have an Epiphany Mass and bless our house as a Christian family (the church building) and our house where the children study (the school building). We will observe this celebration on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 8:30 a.m. We hope many can join us for our School Epiphany celebration. It has been a long-standing Church tradition to bless the home on Epiphany as we enter into a new calendar year. You simply do this by gathering everyone around the front door of the home and writing with chalk on the lintel: 20 +C+M+B 15. These are the numerals of the New Year and the initials of the legendary names of the three holy kings, Casper, Melchior, and Balthazar. The three crosses are marks of blessing honoring the Holy Trinity. The three letters of C, M, and B also mean “Christus mansionem benedicat,” Latin for “Christ blesses the house.” Any prayer asking God’s blessing may be prayed as the family does this, and then the house is blessed with holy water. Laura Sheehan, our Director of Faith Formation, is having Epiphany home blessings passed out this weekend after Masses. Be sure to take one home. Catholic Calendars for 2015: Since the Feast of the Holy Family last Sunday, 2015 Catholic Calendars have been available in the narthex of church. If you have not picked up a calendar yet, be sure and take one for your household. This weekend you may take extra if you wish. As Christmas comes to a close this week, once again Merry Christmas, and I pray that God bless all with many blessings for a healthy and prosperous New Year! Fr.
