COMMITTEE
The 17th Annual Country
Music Festival a Fantastic
Occasion!
What a great weekend
of Country music we
were privileged to experience over the past
few days. Every conttestant and artist who
performed at the Festival is to be congratulated on their performance and should feel
very proud of the way
in which they presented themselves and entertained. The winner
of the Senior Overall
Trophy was SCCMA’s
Emily Markham pictured at left. Congratulations. Well deserved.
As always behind every function put on by our Association is quite a lot of planning and organising by many of
our hard-working and dedicated Members. The Festival
over the 11th, 12th and 13th of this month is no exception.
Not only is the Committee to be commended for a very
fine effort but as well, those Members who turned up to
do the hard yards behind the scene to contribute their
time to help make the Festival the success it was.
From stage hands, sound people, doormen, ticket
sellers, judges, adjudicators, comperes, lunch and tea
pro-viders right down to the runners; everyone is very
much
appreciated for the jobs they were involved with.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Well, our 2014 South Coast Country Music Association Festival is over, done and dusted for another year;
this was the first time that our Festival has been put together without a formally appointed "Festival
Co-ordinator".
The 2014 Festival was arranged by our ASSOCIATION's COMMITTEE, at all levels of the putting together of the
Festival. Emails, drop-boxes, messages and good old phone calls were used to ensure that communication
and co-operation were at the highest possible level.
Each and every committee member knew exactly what had been done and what had to be done, of course
there was a few small things that had been forgotten or overlooked but were all in place for the kick-off on
Friday night and again I must say a huge "THANK YOU" to all of the Committee, our volunteer workers, judges, musicians and everyone who attended to make this such a great weekend. I can also tell you that two persons on the Committee were extremely nervous as to the final outcome, and it was not until mid-afternoon
that either of them started to relax.
The entry of contestants for the talent quest was right on par with last year’s numbers, one or three more in
fact, and the level of talent was as high as I have ever seen at any of our talent quests, and my congratulations to all the placegetters in all sections.
The Gospel show on Sunday morning was, and I do not tell a fib, the best show that I have personally seen
here in the Illawarra that was made up of non-professional entertainers. Every person that I spoke to also
had nothing but praise for the six people who had put so much time and effort into their performance.
Also on Sunday morning we had the poets’ breakfast. While I was there I had the honour to hear a few of the
winning entries, all very well presented by the chosen poets, again well done.
.
At the Gala Concert, although the numbers were slightly down on previous years, those who were in attendance were treated to a journey through time for Country Music in Australia, from traditional bush ballads
from Ernie Constance, to a little more up tempo woman's point of view from Bec Hance, onto where Country
music is headed by a top shelf performance from some of the winners of different sections in the talent quest
and, finally ,a complete cross section of all aspects of Country music by Travis Collins; all in all a fantastic
show.
As with every concert, show, talent quest or festival, there is always room for improvement, not only the ideas of the Committee, but your ideas, the Members, it's YOUR Club. So if YOU have any thoughts on how to
improve the Festival in any way, tell us - that way we can only get better and better with your input.
It has been a good year with no major dramas. Things are running along quite smoothly.
I would urge all Members to attend the AGM if possible, as there is a couple of items to be decided upon,
one of which I have been told can be sorted out by the Committee, however, I am asking the Members to
make that decision — it is your Club, so please come and have your say.
Thank you all for the chance to be a part of the administration of this great Club.
See you all at the AGM.
Yours in Country Music.

FROM THE EDITOR...
Well, what a great weekend of entertainment was had at the Festival by all those people who attended the function.
I must say without a doubt, that all the acts I saw, were first class and of course with the “Raiders” as the backing
band it was “top of the pile”. I am not going to waffle on but the Talent Quest contestants also were of a very high
calibre. Well done to all concerned.
I stated in the June Newsletter that a detailed report would be in this (the July Newsletter) about our Late and Esteemed Member, Joy Price. At the present time I have not obtained the information I have sought so this report has
had to be held over once again until the next issue.
Good to see at last we are getting some entries in the box for the ‘Test Your Country Music Knowledge’ quiz. Great!
Stay Strong — Go Country.

JUNE FAMILY DAY
Family Day for June was held on Sunday, 22nd with quite
a good gathering in attendance. The day started off with the
usual walk-up of our members and once again about six or
seven people put their names down to get up and start the
proceedings.
The compere for the afternoon was Allan Williams and he
kept the programme moving along with relative ease and
once again acquitted himself very well with the task.
Mike O’Dwyer stepped up first to sing and in his usual style
sang a medley of favourites which are always appreciated
by the audience.
He was followed by Roy Keenan, John Fisher, Sylvia Richards and regular singer at our Family Days, Warren Munday
The backing band was made up of alternating members at
different times.
We were very fortunate to have Jim Samphier as our guest
artist for the day. Jim is not only a member of the SCCMA
but is also a very popular Country Music singer who performs at many other clubs throughout the region.
JIM SAMPHIER RELAXING AFTER HE GAVE
A VERY ENJOYABLE PERFORMANCE AT
THE JUNE FAMILY DAY
Also making another very welcome appearance at our June Family Day was “Him & Me” who, as always performed
a variety of popular songs for the appreciative audience. The band members comprise (above, left to right) Trish
Shepherd, Keiran Shepherd and Gary Whalley. Thank you all for coming along and contributing to help make these
Family Days so much more enjoyable. We all hope you will continue to keep turning up at these occasions.

Another Successful SCCMA Show At “The Basement”
On Saturday night, the 5th July, saw the SCCMA present another very entertaining concert in “The Basement” at the Master Builders Club. Quite a good number of Members and guests attended the function.
“Boots” Morgan unfortunately could not attend to entertain us because of illness, however, a very good line-up of
artists stepped up and with the talents of the backing band “Country Fusion”, really put on a first class show.
The show was opened by band member Stephanie Rodden who sang a bracket of
songs which included “Fade Into You” and “What Part Of No Don’t You Understand” before Kim Madden was introduced to the audience. Kim (pictured at left) is
one of the Association’s very popular members and is always willing to oblige on
the many shows which the SCCMA presents. Kim opened her bracket with the
very popular “Paper Roses” among many other well liked songs and went on to
the end of her segment with “Delta Dawn” and the Patsy Cline classic “Walking
After Midnight”.
Other Band members then did a spot with Tony Lenzo playing the guitar instrumental, “La Plage”. Bass player Lou Mesinez showed his versatility when he sang
“Sweet Caroline”, the Neil Diamond hit. Stephanie once again vocalised with a
swing version of “All Of Me”.
Tony then provided the audience with his own unique version
of a song which is a much loved classic of many when he
Sang “Help Me Make It Through The Night”.
The band and artists then went for a well earned break and returned with some more sets.
We then had the privilege of hearing another very popular entertainer in Ken Harris. We
had not heard Ken sing for some time and despite having an asthmatic bug he showed
what a real trooper he is by turning out to do the show on a cold night. Well done Ken.
Ken’s songs included “Thank God For The Radio”, “With One Exception” and a Roy Orbison classic “Blue Bayou”. I still don’t know how he reached those high notes, but he did!
Pictured above is Ken
Harris with band member, Tony Lenzo in the

Mister Bassman,

The band came back with another set of songs, Stephanie once more rendering a host of
tunes with her usual very able vocal ability. The next artist to step up was Greg Madden. I
think this may be the first time Greg has appeared with the backing band at The Basement
however he presented his songs very well. Included in his bracket was “Give Me That Old
Time Rock And Roll” and “Born On The Bayou”. Well done Greg. We hope you can do it
again some time.
There was more to come before the show ended when Tony Hanson, also a newcomer to
The Basement, entertained before the finale. Tony’s set included the popular song of yesteryear “Green Door” and the classic “I Can’t Stop Loving You”. Thanks for coming along
and helping out Tony.
This was the sixth show the SCCMA has presented at The Basement. All the artists are to
be congratulated on their performances. Last and certainly not least, thanks are to be conveyed to Marc and Allan Williams for providing a first class effort on the sound desk.
