LETTER from the CHAIRMAN
The Colleyville Area Chamber is a reflection of all of our businesses and of our
community. The economy is on a slow process of recovery. Because of this,
everyone is doing more with less. We are working more hours and putting more
energy into our businesses. The Chamber has been doing the same. The Board of Directors has passed a lean
budget for this year, recognizing we need to do more with less income. The staff
has worked hard to reduce our expenses as much as possible. Now we all need to
pull together to utilize the Chamber and a great means to grow our businesses.
There are many low cost or no cost ways to do more for your business.
One of the most effective ways to take advantage of the Chamber is to become
involved in one of the networking groups of the Chamber. These groups become
promoters of our individual businesses and spend time understanding the unique
products and services our businesses offer. We all can use more positive word of
mouth advertising.
We recently held our Awards Banquet where we recognized the outstanding
service of many volunteers in the Chamber and in our community. This was a
great time to celebrate the past. Now we look forward to one of the most enjoyable
events of the Chamber: City Slickers. This has been a long-standing tradition of
our Chamber that many in our community enjoy attending. City Slickers provides another means for you to market your business to the
Colleyville area community through sponsorships, donating auction items or
volunteering on the committee. Make plans to join us on May 16 at the Grapevine
Convention Center! Dave Jung

“...our team welcomed
17 new patients.”
The Fort Worth Plastic Surgery center
joined the Colleyville Chamber in July
of 2009. Understanding the value of
putting your membership to work, I was
anxiously awaiting the Chamber Expo
to showcase our practice as well as the
Robert G. Anderson, MD Medical Spa.
True to form, the Expo was packed and
our booth produced outstanding results.
From the Cosmetic and Reconstructive
side of our practice to our noninvasive
Medical Spa, Dr. Robert G. Anderson
and our team welcomed to date 17 new
patients. Thank you for putting on such
fabulous events that enable me to speak
with and meet so many people.

“It’s a
Wonderful Life”
For 2009 our business was very
successful inpart to our relationship with
our friends at the Colleyville Chamber.
Those friends provided encouragement,
support, services, business and referrals.
Every small business needs friends.
If you remember the greatest movie
“It’s a Wonderful Life,” George built
relationships. George was faithful to his
friends in the good and bad times alike.
And when George had a bad day what he
needed most was his family & friends.
During this past year’s tumultuous
economic times it has been my family
and friends in the Colleyville Chamber
that have supported me and our business.
During 2009 our business GREW! Thank
you friends of Colleyville Chamber for
helping us succeed in 2009.

You
gotta Love
Your Chamber!
One thing I have learned about
networking is you get out of it what you
put into it!
As a second year member of the
Colleyville Area Chamber of Commerce,
I have obtained many rewards through
the friendships developed with other
chamber members. What I have learned
is the chamber is an excellent tool to help
you find additional customers and create
lasting relationships. It is about knowing
the person behind the business name
which makes a difference with me. When
I became an Ambassador, I met Patrice
Ciaccio, Sales Director with Cambridge
Luxury Patio Homes. A year later I am
now in the process of building a house
with Cambridge Homes!
I am also involved with the Thursday
“Colleyville Connection” network group.
Guess who my realtor is? Sophie Tel-Diaz of
Prudential Texas Properties! Another person
who I trust with such a large investment.
That is just a small sample since I try
to do all my business with chamber
members now –to know them is to love
doing business with them. Therefore you
gotta love your chamber!

Dear Colleyville
Area Chamber of
Commerce Friends:
I wanted to thank you for a great first six
months. This has been my first Chamber
experience and I have been pleasantly
surprised. From the very welcoming
Ambassadors to the ever accommodating
staff – you guys know how to make a new
chamber member feel at home! As a guest at the August Monthly
Chamber Lunch, I learned first hand
the effectiveness of being involved in a
chamber. I was a new member and gave
my 30 second “commercial” to the large
crowd in attendance. As I walked off stage
and headed back to my seat, another
guest reached out for my arm and said he
wanted to meet me after the lunch. That
person, that day, became a client. “Developing students’ potential for premier

with more than 20 years of experience, as the newest member of the surgical team at the Fort Worth

and the art of cosmetic surgery at their Fort Worth practice. From facial rejuvenation and breast augmentation to body
contouring, their goal is the same: to preserve and enhance

When choosing a cosmetic surgeon, one of the most
important decisions you and your surgeon can make is
the choice of a surgery center. Fort Worth Plastic Surgery

Worth’s medical district. While beautifully appointed, the
comfortable waiting area provides a most welcoming and
pleasant environment for patients, family and friends.
The immaculately maintained cosmetic surgery center is a

As a renowned Fort Worth plastic surgeon, Dr. Anderson
is devoted to providing his patients with exceptional care

considerable recognition as a leading facelift and rhinoplasty
(nose reconstruction) surgeon. He is also highly regarded as
a liposuction, tummy tuck and breast augmentation specialist
in the Metroplex.
Dr. Anderson is a member of numerous professional
organizations, including the American Society of Plastic
Surgery and the prestigious American Society of Aesthetic

Prior to establishing himself as a cosmetic and reconstructiove
surgeon in Fort Worth, Dr. Anderson completed his medical

School at Dallas. He completed residencies in Plastic Surgery
and Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, as well as a

and book chapters and is a nationally recognized authority on
facial nerve injuries.
Volunteering as a medical missionary, Dr. Anderson spent
nearly six months in the Fiji Islands, working with and
training local surgeons and lecturing at the University of the
South Pacific. More recently he has been involved in medical
missionary work in Mexico and Central America.
Dr. Anderson, his wife Janie, and their three children have
resided in the Fort Worth area since 1987. *
Dr. English complements Dr. Anderson’s expertise in offering world-class facial enhancement and
body contouring surgical procedures including facelifts, breast augmentations, abdominoplasty and
rhinoplasty, as well as the latest cosmetic techniques such as BOTOX, Fraxel Re:pair laser skin resurfacing
and several injectable fillers for specific areas of the face and neck.
Like Dr. Anderson, Dr. English is skilled in reconstructive surgery following treatment for skin cancer,
breast cancer and other medical conditions. In addition, Dr. English specializes in performing lower
body lifts of the torso, buttocks and thighs and is skilled at combining “tummy tucks” and liposuction. “Many patients who have undergone considerable weight loss after bariatric surgery have benefited
greatly from these techniques,” he says.
Dr. English received his undergraduate degree at the University of Florida and his medical degree from
the University of Miami School of Medicine, where he graduated in the top five percent of his class.
Dr. English has been in private practice in the Dallas area since 1988 and continues to maintain a private
practice there in addition to offering his services at the Fort Worth Plastic Surgery Center. With the addition of another world-class surgeon and the ever-expanding selection of breakthrough
treatments and procedures available, Dr. Anderson and Fort Worth Plastic Surgery Center remain at the
forefront of surgical cosmetic enhancements in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
Get Your Summer Body On!
ZERONA® Body Sculpting Procedure
ZERONA® is a new non-invasive body sculpting
procedure designed to remove fat and contour the
body without invasive surgery. The ZERONA® Laser
Scanner allows for the emulsification of fat tissue,
which is then passed through the body during its
normal course of detoxification. ZERONA®, unlike
other procedures, allows the patient to continue his
or her daily activities without interruptions from
surgery, pain, wounds or garments.
About Face!
Fraxel Re:pair System
Fraxel re:pair® treatment is a preemptive strike
against a facelift that delivers surgery-like results for
the most severe skin damage! Dr. Anderson uses the
treatment to tighten skin and correct damage without
any incisions or subsequent scarring. Deep wrinkles,
irregular texture, age spots/sunspots, and sun-induced
redness are all treated by the Fraxel re:pair at The
Fort Worth Plastic Surgery Center. What’s more, most
patients are able to return to regular activities within

from your Police Chief
Letter from the Mayor
Colleyville police are seeking cooperation from citizens and businesses to stop a recent
rash of vehicle burglaries in the city. And they’re providing a means...and a reminder...
to illicit that assistance: reintroduction of the Stop Thief/Hide-Lock-Take citizen action
program. This time we need our businesses to get involved.
Thanks to the Colleyville Area
Chamber of Commerce for
allowing me the opportunity to
introduce myself. My name is
Steve Dye, and I am honored to
be Colleyville’s new police chief. I
began my career with the Houston
Police Department in 1984 and
served with the Garland Police
Department the past 14 years,
where I retired as an assistant
chief to accept the position in Colleyville. In the coming weeks, Colleyville police will be working with local businesses to spread
the Stop Thief!/Hide-Lock-Take message by agreeing to display a small sign on the
front doors or front counters of local businesses. The police department will provide
the signs.
I have been fortunate to work in several different capacities in
my law enforcement career including, Patrol, Traffic, SWAT,
Narcotics, and Mounted Patrol. I have been married for
almost 25 years to my wife, Noemi, and we have two teenage
daughters in high school.
One of the main reasons I was interested in serving
Colleyville is the outstanding reputation of the city and its
unique character. Since starting last month, I have had a
chance to meet many members of the Colleyville community
and have been so impressed with the sincere and gracious
welcome I have received. I look forward to getting to know
many more of you in the weeks and months ahead. I am
privileged to work with professional and caring City of
Colleyville employees and will do my part to continue to
provide the best city services possible.
Under my leadership, our police department will continue to
emphasize a community policing philosophy in the deliverance
of a high level of police service. We will always understand
the importance of teamwork and collaboration with our
community members and business partners in maintaining
a safe and secure city. Our police department will focus on
professional customer service, delivered with integrity. We
will be mindful to use innovation to benefit our operations
and the people we serve, and to work as efficiently as possible.
It is truly an honor and privilege to be in Colleyville. I want to thank former police chief, Tommy Ingram, for his
years of service with the Colleyville Police Department and
wish him the best in his retirement. Thank you for your time
and I look forward to a continued high level of community
involvement always welcoming your input.

Since December, the city has seen an increase in vehicle burglaries. In roughly half of
those instances, police found that the cars were left unlocked. Now police are cautioning
drivers to hide your things, lock your car, and take your keys. The Colleyville Police
Department hopes it’s a message that is heeded not only in the parking lots of local
stores, gyms, and businesses, but at home while parked in the driveway—where many
of the burglaries have occurred.
Colleyville is indeed one of the safest cities in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. However,
crime can happen anywhere and when people don’t take precautions, it becomes more
likely that crime will happen here. Statistics show that vehicle burglaries are crimes of
opportunity. If thieves can’t easily gain access to a car, home, or garage, they are more
likely to choose another target.
In 2008, the Colleyville Police Department launched the STOP THIEF! Program. The
first of its kind in Texas, the program is simple, consisting of a printed placard placed
on the car’s rearview mirror each time it is parked. The placard serves as a notice to
potential thieves that there are no valuables in the car; it also serves as a reminder
to vehicle owners to remove any valuables, including bags, purses, briefcases, money,
laptops, radar detectors, etc.
It’s good advice. Colleyville police hope people listen.
The business signs are free and can be obtained at the Colleyville Justice Center, 5201
Riverwalk Drive, in Colleyville. For more information, contact Community Services
Officer Raymon Cannon at 817.503.1230.

Bonus Depreciation: Along with
Depreciation of assets there is a Bonus
Depreciation. This is another tax benefit to
stimulate spending. The bonus depreciation
allows you to write off ½ of your applicable
property/assets in addition to the asset
depreciation described above.
Maximizing Your
After Tax Earnings
2009 and 2010 Tax Law Changes
and How it Will Affect Your Business–
Many of the tax breaks you have been enjoying are scheduled to expire in 2010.
Are you ready? Are you planning for the changes?
In order to stimulate spending, the government allowed businesses the
opportunity to reduce income, resulting in reduced tax liabilities, enabling
small businesses to purchase equipment, hire staff, and market their business.
So as a business owner, when filing your 2009 returns, some of the key tax
considerations you should consider include: Depreciation of Assets, Bonus
Depreciations, Vehicles, Lease Hold Improvements, and Payroll Filing.
Asset Depreciation: Over the last 8 years, small businesses have been able
to fully depreciate assets purchased in a single year. In 2009, businesses could
deduct up to $250,000 from their revenues in depreciation, when total capital
purchases are under $800,000. Do note, that if your business purchased over
$800,00, the depreciation deduction would be decreased dollar for dollar over
the $800,000 investment.
However, there are always pros and cons. If your depreciation election increased
your income dramatically, you will lose the depreciation benefit in future years,
thus increasing your tax liabilities each year thereafter. To avoid this, you would
not take the write off immediately and thus write off the asset over a period of years. Note, this eight year opportunity is set to expire in 2010, so you may only be able
to depreciate $25,000 on 2010 asset purchases.
How you purchase and depreciate your assets should follow your business goals
and strategies, not the other way around. Due to the complexity of the options, this
is a topic that should be discussed with your CPA - it can make a huge difference
in your tax liabilities.
14
Colleyville Chamber
MArch/april 2010
The bonus depreciation can dramatically
increase your after tax earnings and can
be used to generate a loss. However, this is
planned to expire in 2010, so discussions
with your CPA are essential to ensure you
are not increasing your income significantly,
thus increasing your tax liabilities in
following years.
Vehicles: Another topic that continually
changes are vehicle deductions. In the past
there were a number of loop holes in vehicle
write-offs. This is no longer the case.
The only vehicles that have a 100% writeoff are heavy duty work vehicles that weigh
over 6,000 lbs. These can be written off over
a 7 year period. However, If your vehicle is
under 6,000 lbs, then it is considered listed
property and the write off amounts are:
Year 1 - $10,960, and Years 2 through 7 $2,960.
This now begs the question - should you
depreciate your vehicle or use mileage
allowance reimbursements. The vast
majority of circumstances indicate utilizing
mileage is a sounder financial strategy. This
again depends on the type of business.
Many companies buy vehicles in the
company name so they can write it off.
Did you know that buying a vehicle in
the company name makes you liable for
Business Personal Property Tax (BPP)? If
purchased personally, there is no current
tax on this property. The counties are
starting to ask and tax any property used
in business whether owned personally or
in a business name. The first target is the
realtors and their personally owned cars.
(Exceptions to this rule would include
large fleets of vehicles that you tend to
lease anyway.)
Ready for a remodel? Think first before you
begin in 2010. From Oct 2004 to year end
2009, businesses were allowed to improve
their leases and write off the improvements
over a 15 year period.
Do not rely on the past; “times
are a changing.” Work
very closely with your CPA to
ensure you are making the right
decisions for your business.
Susan
Williams
A Client Focused Mortgage Company
Unless there are changes to regulations,
this is expected to expire in 2010, meaning
businesses will have to write off remodelling
expenditures over 27.5 years for a rental
property, and 39 years for non-residential
- with no bonus depreciation! Something to
consider before renovating.
Payroll: Out of habit, many businesses
filed a 941 (quarterly). If your business pays
less than $1000 annual liability for social
security, Medicare, and withheld federal
taxes, you must file the 944 (annually), this
saves you money and time in quarterly tax
preparation.
DIF Score: Another example of potential
financial impact is surpassing your DIF
score, which is a line the IRS uses to
determine who will be audited–your CPA
can help you determine how to best invest,
depreciate, and plan for the future without
exceeding your DIF score.
Do not rely on the past; “times are a
changing.” I encourage you to work very
closely with your CPA to ensure you
are making the right decisions for your
business. *

from GCISD Superintendent
The spring semester is a busy time in Grapevine-Colleyville ISD. We continue recognizing student and staff accomplishments,
and celebrating the community partnerships that are vital to
the success of the District.
Ten GCISD schools made the list of higher performing schools
for 2009 as determined by the National Center for Educational
Achievement in conjunction with Just for the Kids. Schools are
selected based on outstanding performance across multiple
grades and years. GCISD schools making the list are: Bransford
Elementary, Colleyville Elementary, Grapevine Elementary,
Heritage Elementary, O.C. Taylor Elementary, Timberline Elementary, Colleyville Middle,
Heritage Middle, Colleyville Heritage High and Grapevine High.
Seven students qualified for the prestigious Texas All-State band and choirs. They performed
in February at the Texas Music Educators Association Annual Convention in San Antonio. Participants were: Laura Bumgardner and Kelly Springer, both of CHHS; and Teresa
Gottfredson, Dustin Norwood, Jordan Sakakeeny, Vanessa Todora, and Amanda Wills, all
of GHS. Congratulations to these outstanding musicians!
In February, 42 GCISD students attended the first North Texas Youth Leadership Institute, a
two-day leadership conference involving 150 juniors and seniors from GCISD, Carroll ISD and
Keller ISD. The conference focused on service leadership and on providing students with tools
to prepare them as effective and motivated leaders. The event was an excellent opportunity
for students to network with area business leaders and build leadership skills. Thanks to the
Southlake Kiwanis and Carroll ISD for sponsoring the event for our area students.
On a personal note, you likely have heard
that I have been named the sole finalist
for Superintendent of Richardson ISD.
The news is bittersweet for me – I am
excited about this new chapter in my life
and extremely honored by the invitation
to join hands with their team, but I will not
forget the joy I’ve experienced as part of the
GCISD family. I have thoroughly enjoyed
my time in this community and did not
make this decision without much thought
and prayer. Since coming to GCISD, I have
had the pleasure of working alongside
dedicated professionals who care deeply
about our students and are committed to
instructional excellence. I am proud of all
we’ve accomplished over the last 5½ years
and commend our students, staff, parents,
and community members for continued
support of quality programs. Rest assured
that GCISD is in good hands going forward. GCISD is successful because of this
community’s passion, love for students,
and commitment to being the best. As I
look to the opportunities ahead, I thank
you for the privilege and honor of serving
this community.
Many opportunities for involvement are
available in coming months. Important
