GOD’S WORD TODAY
“My house shall be called a house of prayer for all
peoples.” The prophet Isaiah’s words signal the theme
running through all three readings today. Today’s Gospel is one of the most difficult to understand because it
seems to portray Jesus as remote and unfeeling. If we
look deeper, we see that what the Canaanite woman
did was to challenge the boundaries of the day. Her
persistence was based on the most fundamental of human life situations. Her daughter was ill. When illness
strikes, we care not whether someone who can offer
healing is within our established boundaries. In healing
the woman’s daughter, Jesus, for his part, also broke
down the social barriers of the day. As we prepare to
listen to God’s word today, let’s first examine our own
established boundaries. What boundaries might God be
challenging us to break down?

FIRST COMMUNION
REQUIREMENTS FOR
FIRST GRADERS
What is Children’s Liturgy of the Word?
• It is a special gathering in which children hear the Sunday
readings proclaimed in words appropriate to their ages, and
where they are able to discuss what they have heard.
• The children are dismissed with a leader after the Opening
Prayer and go to a room close by.
They return to the main assembly and their parents in time for
the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
The Diocese of Monterey’s
guidelines for First Communion
require that a first grade student
who plans to receive First Communion as a second grader,
needs to participate in faith formation as a six year old
and/or first grader.
The goal of Children’s Liturgy of the Word is to help children
engage meaningfully in the Liturgy, thus beginning a lifelong
practice of praying, learning, and celebrating at Mass.
First Communion preparation is a two year program, usually beginning in the first grade, but can begin when the
child is older.
For more information, call the Office of Faith Formation, 6241271, ext. 216, or email, sally@carmelmission.org
If you wish your child to begin the First Communion
preparation classes, please contact the Faith Formation
Office, 624-1271, ext. 216 or sally@carmelmission.org.
Explore the Catholic Faith
Sessions to explore the Catholic Faith are now beginning.
Two groups are now forming:
ADULT RCIA
FAMILY RCIA
ADULT RCIA is for adults interested in the possibility of Baptism and full membership in the Catholic
Church. It is also for those previously baptized and
who wish to discern the possibility of full membership in the Catholic Church.
FAMILY RCIA is for children of the age of reason
(seven years or older) who are interested in the possibility of Baptism and full membership in the
Catholic Church. One or more parents attend the
sessions with their child.
Both groups will begin with an Inquiry period, followed by preparation for Baptism, Eucharist, and
Confirmation, if so desired by the candidate.
Anyone who is interested in discerning Baptism and
full membership in the Catholic Church is welcome
to join in one of these groups.
For further information, please call Sally Greig,
624-1271 ext 216 or sally@carmelmission.org.
Carmel Mission Book Club
Now Starting
Pope Francis’ Joy of the Gospel is the first book
of the newly forming book club and discussion group
being facilitated by Deacon Bill.
We meet on Saturdays at 2pm, in Mac Mahon
Center with discussion and sharing sessions for the
following five Saturdays:
August 16: The Crisis of Communal Commitment
August 23: Proclamation of the Gospel (we are
all missionary disciples)
August 30: Social Dimension of Evangelization
September 6: Spirit-filled Evangelizers
It isn’t necessary to attend all the sessions; one session doesn’t build on another, so plan on attending
as many as you can. Free snacks, coffee/tea,
soft drinks available.
Please call Sally at the Faith Formation Office if
you’re interested, 624-1271 x216, or
sally@carmelmission.org so we can order the book
for you. There is no fee; a goodwill offering will be
requested to cover the cost of the book.

Stewardship
“Always Forward, Never Back”
A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
In today’s first reading, the Lord speaks through the prophet Isaiah during a time
of political dissolution and moral de-cline. The prophet had warned of God’s judgment against people for the feelings of self-importance they found in their possessions, and condemned them for various forms of economic injustice such as exploiting the poor and immigrants. Good stewards know that Isaiah’s message is as compelling today as it was in the time of the kingdom of Judah: Do the right thing. Offer
justice and compassion toward others. Be honest in all your dealings. And remember to observe the day of the Lord.
Your Weekly Offerings
The plate collection for August 9 and 10 was $13,190.50 including $2,580.00 in
electronic contributions. The Parish needs $19,300.00 each week to meet its plate
income goal. This week we were $6,109.50 short of our weekly goal. Plate income represents 52% of our income requirement. The balance comes from special donations, the AMA campaign, endowment funds & other sources.

your special needs. Leave your message on the

A good prayer, though often used, is still fresh and fair
in the eyes and ears of heaven—Thomas Fuller
Please note: The Mass schedule is subject to change without
notice. Mass intentions requested less than two weeks ahead
may not appear in the bulletin. Masses are offered for the

Deacon Bill had the opportunity to serve at the canonization mass, and will share that experience with
us, as well as his thoughts on the canonizations.

Top 10 Reasons You Should Join the Choir:
10. It¹s exactly like singing in the shower, except you¹re
wearing a robe and
people are actually listening.
9. Intellectual stimulation – when you make music, you
are using both sides of your brain simultaneously.
8. Friends! You will no longer be able to complain,
“Church is so impersonal – I don’t know anyone in my
parish.”
7. You have a guaranteed, reserved seat for both Christmas and Easter.
6. Wearing a robe eliminates making the difficult decision of what to wear on Sunday.
5. The ushers never pass the collection plate to the choir.
4. It is one of the few activities that do not require electronic equipment, expensive power tools, or shopping.
3. Rehearsals are Thursday night, so for an hour you’ll
reduce the risk of developing tendonitis from nonstop
operation of a television remote control or computer
mouse.
2. Singing is heart healthy and there are no monthly
membership fees and no sore muscles.

News from Junipero Serra School
Monday, August 18th, our school year officially begins with the arrival of teachers and other staff members
who will spend the week preparing for the arrival of our
students the following Monday. Over the last few weeks
I have tried to share my initial impressions of Junipero
Serra School with you and to highlight the central elements of a Catholic school education and the role of the
Catholic School educator.
This weekend I want to outline a major focus for this
school year at JSS. As most of you are probably aware,
all schools in the state of California periodically do a formal review of their programs, identifying areas of
strength and areas for future growth. The self-study
incorporates all aspects of the program (curriculum,
governance, school organization, student support
services and activities, and material resources). All
stakeholders are asked to participate in the process by
providing feedback on their experience of the school.
Most California schools are accredited through the
Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
Catholic elementary schools are accredited by the
Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA), an
organization which actually predates WASC, while
Catholic secondary schools are dually accredited by both
WCEA and WASC. In the case of Catholic schools, the self
-study documents also evaluate how well the school lives
out its Catholic identity in prayer, service, sacramental
opportunities, and religious instruction. Junipero Serra
begins its self-study year this fall as we prepare for a
three-day visit by a group of educators from Catholic and
public schools in February or March of 2016. The process, as you can imagine, is extensive, and the goal is to
affirm all that is good in our schools and to target precisely the key areas that will be most critical for improving student learning as we move ahead in the 21st century.
I want to take this opportunity to thank those of you
who have stopped by or who have communicated a
warm welcome via email or a quick word. Next week
you will be hearing from two other voices at JSS, Kacey
Konya, our Student Council President, and Mrs. Becky
Craig, 6th grade teacher and Student Council moderator.
“Glory be to God whose power working in us can do
infinitely more than we can ask or imagine”
