"When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her." A survey of the
Gospels reveals many ways in which Jesus upheld the dignity of women.
In a culture where women were considered second-class citizens, Jesus
was never afraid to encounter women, to affirm them, and to welcome
them among his followers. He regularly broke rules about interaction
with women and understood the value of women's religious testimony.
In today's Gospel we see another aspect of Jesus' respect for women.
Here we see that his heart was stirred by the situation of this grieving
mother. The man who had died was "the only son of his mother, and she
was a widow." In other words, this woman had just been stripped of her
primary focus in life. Also, in this culture, a woman was protected by her
father, her husband, or her son. Absent one of those men in her life, she
was in an incredibly vulnerable position. This, along with the grief of losing her child, struck the Lord with pity. "Do not weep," he told her, clearly
moved by her sorrow. And then, he did the impossible and restored the
dead man to life. But he did more than this. After "the dead man sat up
... Jesus gave him to his mother." In other words, Jesus made a point to
restore and affirm this woman's vocation as a mother.
In our culture, women have earned a much more respectable status
and are no longer dependent upon men. But, at times, the noble and
irreplaceable role of mother is still undervalued in society. Too often,
women who devote themselves to this vocation are dismissed as unimportant. Christ himself reveals, through his ministry to this mother, that
her role is vital. May we also find ways to affirm and serve the mothers
in our midst.

On the Song of the Church
Dietrich Bonhoeffer (Life Together)
Why do Christians sing when they are together?
The reason is quite simply,
because in singing together it is possible for them to speak and pray
the same Word at the same time;
in other words,
because they can unite in the Word.
There should be singing, not only at devotions,
but at regular times of the day and week.
The more we sing, the more joy will we derive from it,
but, above all, the more devotion and discipline and joy we put into
our singing,
the richer will be the blessing

that will come to the whole life of the fellowship from singing together.
It is the voice of the Church that is heard in singing together.
It is not you that sings, it is the Church that is singing,
and you, as a member of the Church, may share in its song.
Thus all singing together that is right
must serve to widen our spiritual horizon,
make us see our little company as a member of the great Christian
Church on earth,
and help us willingly and gladly to join our singing,
be it feeble or good, to the song of the Church.
Eucharistic Adoration: A Time for Prayer and Peace
All are welcome to spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.
We are in need of additional prayer partners to share an hour
on Tuesdays at 6:00 a.m. and noon, Thursdays at 5:00 p.m., Fridays at
4:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., and Saturdays at 6:00 a.m. If you are interested,
please contact Joyce at 612-860-3830.
Second Collection Next Weekend for
Parish Charity Account
St. Stephen’s Church often receives calls and visits from parishioners and
non-parishioners requesting emergency assistance. While we have a
policy and guidelines for how we are able to help, we typically provide
gas and/or food vouchers. For these needs we have a separate account
called the charity account. Next week’s second collection will benefit this
account. Thank you for your generosity. It allows us to continue to serve
those most in need.

School
Officer Fiedler Goes to Kindergarten
Enroll with Confidence
This week the kindergartners enjoyed a police officer visit from Ms.
Fiedler's brother. He spent some time talking about how police officers
keep us safe and how they help people.
From pre-school through eighth
grade, St. Stephen’s School offers
a quality faith-based Catholic Education. Come join our family of
believers. All are welcome! To enroll, please call the school office at
763-421-3236.
The kindergartners were then invited to ask questions about his job.
They wanted to know a lot about his uniform and everything he uses
in his job. He showed them how, even with the lights on, his flashlight
still worked!
They thought it was pretty cool that he has to wear a uniform just like
they do! It was great visit and we are so happy he was able to come and
visit our school!
Mission Statement
St. Stephen’s Catholic School is a
caring Christian community that
nourishes spiritual development
and academic excellence.
Philosophy
Festival of Nations
Our Middle School students and teachers did an excellent job educating
our young students about their nation of choice at Festival of Nations.
There were 15 different countries represented with a flag, a game, a favorite food, or even face paint!
St. Stephen’s Catholic School integrates
faith with academics to prepare students
to make solid Christian choices. It is an
accredited, private school, comprised
of pre-school, elementary, and middle
school levels.
Faith: As a vital part of the parish
community, we educate students in a
Catholic atmosphere enriched by the
Gospel messages of peace and justice.
The spiritual development of students is
the primary goal. The school recognizes
that a person's faith is formed by living
out that faith in community through
prayer, worship, service and study; and
grounded in our Catholic tradition.
Academics: In partnership with their
family, each student is encouraged and
directed to reach his or her potential.
Our academic program emphasizes mastery of the basics, academic excellence,
and a variety of extracurricular activities.
The school prepares students to be fully
equipped for their next level of academic
achievement.
Community: The school seeks to provide
a safe and trusting learning environment
where each student is valued and challenged to grow spiritually, academically,
emotionally, socially, and physically.

Pastoral Care
Please Pray for...
10th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sr. Mary Anne Schaenzer
Both the First Reading and the Gospel tell marvelous stories
of young men being raised from the dead!
Sometimes we see someone come back to life,
someone who has totally changed by the grace of God.
St. Paul experienced a total life change!
Lifeguards at the pool rescue people from drowning.
Maybe you will be called upon
to be a lifeguard for another person,
not at the swimming pool,
but in the life situation
in which they find themselves
swimming.
Are you prepared to respond?
I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Ps 30:1).
Prayer Shawl Ministry Potluck
This ministry is one which extends God’s love to others through meditation and prayer while knitting or crocheting. Shawls are given in times
of illness or grieving, as well as during times of joy (pregnancy, adoption) or celebration (nursing mom, recovery and rehabilitation, special
anniversary or birthday, etc.).
We will meet Friday, June 10 at 11:30 a.m. in FCC 6 and 7. Join us for our
year end potluck. We warmly invite new members!
Hospice Volunteers Needed
This notice is in regard to two hospice programs that are always looking for volunteers. While there are a variety of volunteer possibilities
through St. Stephen’s, it may be that you feel called to volunteer to be
with the dying and their families. Both the Allina and Fairview Hospice
programs have patients in the Anoka County area.
To seek information or to volunteer with Allina Hospice you can call 612262-7108 or email Judith.plucker@allina.com or apply online at http://
www.allinahealth.org/hospicevolunteer.
To seek information or to volunteer with Fairview Hospice you can contact Janell Tibodeau, 612-728-4042, or apply online at www.fairview.

ADMINISTRATION
The Power of Giving is Now at Your Fingertips
St. Stephen’s Church is excited to introduce Give by Kiosk, a modern, convenient way to make offerings and respond to special appeals. It’s faster
and more secure than having your checks manually processed and it’s
easy to use…if you know how to use an iPad, you can use
Give by Kiosk. Simply tap the touch pad screen to choose
the fund you want to give to and then enter the amount
you want to contribute. Once you swipe your credit or
debit card and complete your transaction, you can print
or email yourself a receipt on the spot. Even better, print a
donation slip that you can later place in the basket during Mass.
The kiosk is now located in the Gathering Place. Stop by and give it a try!

Stewardship Reflection
“And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her,
‘Do not weep.’” Luke 7:13
This verse is a great reminder that the Stewardship lifestyle is one of service, putting God first and
to “love one another.” Unfortunately today, many
people have “passion” for
activities they enjoy - their
job and off-work activities.
Many times our “passion”
to excel is at the expense
of someone else. Maybe
we need to focus on a little less passion for our individual concerns and a lot
more compassion for others.

El 10º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Hna. Mary Anne Schaenzer
¿Estás preparado a responder?
Te alabare, Señor, porque me has rescatado (Sal. 30:1)
Voluntarios Para Los Enfermos

puedes usar Give by Kiosk.
