July 2013 Volume 29 Number 7 SEBA Charters it's 15th Chapter SEBA president Dan Daniel announced the formation of SEBA's 15 th charterd chapter in June. The folks in the Gadsden/Ballplay Alabama area now have greater opportunities to gather for jamming and community fellowship with the newly formed chapter. The members of that area had been meeting for a few months and decided to formally become a SEBA chapter. Turn out the lights, the party is over.... The music has died! On Saturday night, June 1, 2013 Sandra Williams Corley announced the Williamson Music Barn will close. The Music Barn had been in operation for 27 years and was founded by the late John Williams. The Barn was closed after Saturday night's performances and all future performances were canceled. Thanks to all who supported us over the years. Summer's here and so are the strains of stringed instruments and voices keeping the traditions of bluegrass music alive. Lemonade and sweet tea are the order of the day for those with parched throats rendering their favorite songs. So what's so unusual about summer being here? As I've observed, in the past we went from Winter straight into Summer. This has been the first 'near normal' spring season we've seen in near about 10 years. And it's been great! So get out and enjoy yourself and the great weather. This month I want to address a long running issue concerning advertising events on the SEBA websites and in the Breakdown. I am a PhD student at Ole Miss (University of Mississippi) and my dissertation is on bluegrass as it really is in 2013. I am investigating changes made over the last 50 years since a study was done on the subject. I would welcome and greatly appreciate any input your organization members would like to submit. I have sent out over 2400 surveys to the groups that I was able to locate, but I am sure I missed many. Anyone that is interested in participating in the survey should contact me at ebtlr@aol.com I will be glad to forward the survey to them via email. The survey is general information.... no names requested. Thank you, Elizabeth Butler Hello, My name is Jack Kinakin and I own Bluegrass Music Canada. Page 5 July 2013 The SEBA BREAKDOWN “Good Wood & Good Cuts” Back in 2007 SEBA member Kelley Lane was thinking about owning a dream guitar, something like a prewar Martin. And by chance he stumbled upon a book that literally changed his life. The book? Clapton's Guitar: Watching Wayne Henderson Build the Perfect Instrument. Published in June 2006 here's Amazon.com's description: New York Times bestselling author Allen St. John started off looking for the world's greatest guitar, but what he found instead was the world's greatest guitar builder. Living and working in Rugby, Virginia (population 7), retired rural mail carrier Wayne Henderson is a true American original, making America's finest instruments using little more than a pile of good wood and a sharp whittling knife. There's a 10-year waiting list for Henderson's heirloom acoustic guitars -- and even a musical legend like Eric Clapton must wait his turn. Partly out of self-interest, St. John prods Henderson into finally building Clapton's guitar, and soon we get to pull up a dusty stool and watch this Stradivari in glue-stained blue jeans work his magic. The story that ensues will captivate you with its portrait of a world where craftsmanship counts more than commerce, and time is measured by old jokes, old-time music, Eric Clapton plays his and homemade lemon pies shared by good Henderson guitar friends. As you can see it's a pretty interesting book about a phenomenal luthier from Virginia. But more importantly is, like Allen St. John, Kelley Lane too was looking for the best guitar and set out to learn more about Wayne Henderson. Being a new found admirer of Henderson he wrote him a letter that cultivated a great friendship. Soon Kelley would take one of many 6 hour journeys from his home in Rome Georgia to Rugby Virginia. When the two finally met, it wasn't long before Henderson began to share his knowledge and techniques with him. At this point, it is important to share with you that Kelley knew nothing about building or repairing guitars, Luthier Wayne Henderson mandolins or fiddles and the like. But he was on a mission to learn how a master did it. For nearly 2 years Kelley traveled to Wayne's shop every 2 months or so. He became Wayne Henderson's shadow. “I'd watch whatever he was working on and whatever I didn't learn from him, he gave me the skill to find out how to do it right” he said. “It was a crazy idea, but I just wanted build one guitar” Each time, upon arriving in Wayne's shop Kelley would find him doing bindings, shaving braces, setting necks and before long Kelley was purchasing tools as he went from project to Marcia & Kelley in Wayne's shop project. Kelley said Wayne told him that the secret was “Good wood and good cuts”. Soon Kelley Lane grew to become a skilled luthier himself, building and repairing instruments. 5 years and 6 guitars later....... Kelley and wife Marcia still travel to Virginia where they have made friends with so many people including Wayne. In fact, having just returned from the Wayne Henderson Music Festival, Kelly without any preconceived notions, sold his #6 guitar (see article on page 1) and got the attention of at least two more prospectiv0e buyers at the festival. How cool is that? To learn more about SEBA member Kelley and his Lane Guitars visit his SEBA Page at www.sebabluegrass.org/members/detail.php?id=2229 or you can call or write him at 706-346-2933 E-mail: kelleylane@comcast.net www.sebabluegrass.org Turn out the lights, the party is over.... The music has died! I write today with a sad and heavy heart. As most of you have heard the Williamson Music Barn had it final show Saturday night! It was a very difficult decision to make and it was made with great heartache! For many years the barn welcomed bands from all over, people that quickly became the best of friends and wonderful fellowship! I, myself spent 20 or so years enjoying the best part if my life, developing my music ability and made some of my beat friends ever! I love you all with all my heart! Thank you John Williams for the love that you gave each and everyone of us and providing a wonderful gathering place for the best family reunions in the whole world on Saturday nights! It will be forever missed and as we have missed you, my heart will always carrying a special place for you and never be forgotten! Love to all and my God bless you! Sandra Williams The late John Williams had the love and heart for music back in 1987 when he and his, then wife Judy opened the Williamson Music Barn in Williamson GA. For 27 years The Barn was run totally on donations and no government assistance Thousands of performances and at least a million friends later it has all come to an end. John's widow Sandra and a core of hard working volunteers are to be commended for their hard work and dedication to the music, the musicians, the fans, the community and The Barn itself. Gone are the jams and shows but not John Williams the wonderful memories that will be with all those who loved the old place, it's people and welcoming spirit. Here are a few comments from fans and admirers of The Barn. I had not heard until yesterday and my heart is broken . There were many friendships created down there that will continue . Our memories of John and Sandra and their hospitality will forever inspire us all . May God greatly bless you all for all your love and kindness . We will always love you all . Nena Duck Harold and I are saddened to share this news. Mr. John Williams contributed so much to keep the music in our area alive and well and we honor & respect John's memory. A great big thanks to Sandra Williams Corley, Donna Betsill Howell, Donna & Clifford Whitten & all the others who worked deligently in keeping the Williamson Pictures of Performers, Bands, Fans and supporters adorned the walls at the Williamson Music Barn. Music Barn open for these 27 years. We know the decision to close did not come easy and we pray for comfort for all the Music Barn Fans and want to remind them to treasure the good memories. Harold and I have good memories of the Barn that we treasure as well. Harold & Charlotte Kirkland / Hollenville Opry Page 6 July 2013 The SEBA BREAKDOWN I was fresh out of high school, and was attending a music festival at the University of Alabama, Huntsville campus. It was all kinds of music. The McLain Family Band happened to be there. They were going to do a show in one of the halls. They were standing on the sidewalk outside of the hall doing a little teaser set to get people to come in. They stopped me dead in my tracks. I sat right down on the ground, dropped my jaw, and said “Oh my gosh, what is this?!!” Raymond McLain was playing banjo and they were all projecting a lot of energy, had big smiles, and were real pros. At the same show there were some old friends of mine playing in the bluegrass band that opened for the McLains. I was just drawn in by the whole event that day, and I started down a new path. Also, at that period of time, our generation was into what was called the ecology movement. So the fact that this music was being played organically without electricity seemed pretty cool to me. Raymond went on to play with Jim and Jesse for many years. Raymond’s brother Michael played banjo in my band for about five years, and did the banjo work on the Silver and Gold album with me.
