The most common settings for these are an alternate Victorian or Edwardian England, or a ‘Weird West’ version of the American frontier of the same era. Steampunk has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, with regular conventions held and even Steampunk amusement parks on France and Holland. Creativity,” MUSO PROFILE : Jamie McCaskill The next SEWING BEE @ THE GBD Call to Local Performing Artists! Coming back home to Thames has been an eye opener in terms of where the arts are at and especially how they are received. No doubt there is a huge amount of talented people here but I feel there are two challenges that we artists face in terms of development and sustainment. Firstly, what is there to help artists develop and stay here in Thames? Secondly: The perception of the audience and what they believe is good for Thames. Expression is one way forward. We need to encourage people to write and perform their music or their own stories and start challenging peoples perceptions about what Thames (people in Thames) have to offer. Creating a buzz and displaying confidence in what we have right here. We’re often too blinded by amateur theatre and cover bands in this town. And fooled by believing if a band or theatre show comes from out of town they are better than the talent here, but also if they do come to Thames, they can’t be that good. As Performing Artists we need to challenge our audiences and give them something different. And if audiences just got behind expression instead of sniggering at it, this community could explode in terms of the arts. Thames people block Thames expression. No-one else. Not Aucklanders, not Australians, not the government. Thames as a whole. If you’re riding on the status quo train it’s gonna be a long uneventful trip. Stand up for your art and do it better than you think you can! Everyone will benefit. -- Jamie McCaskill is an award winning playwright musician and Actor based in Thames. is on Saturday the 15th November. Come one, come all. Bring your bits and bobs plus your ideas. Perfect timing to create something to wear to the Steampunk Ball at the Bella Street Pumphouse to be held on Sat th 6 Dec. A spokeshorse for the group, GG Graham of Grahamstown, said they wanted to see the $47M new Kopu bridge sold off and the money used to repair the old bridge. Graham said the new bridge was the work of Satan and should be avoided at all costs. He predicted an influx of gold plated BMWs this summer, adding "it will be the end of the Coromandel way of life as we know it" Two horses living in a field opposite the Kopu Station Hotel have already moved out claiming the concrete motorway style bridge gave off a bad vibe and had cast a blight on the whole area. "We want our lovely old wooden bridge back" said one horse while another said the quaint old swing bridge was a much nicer way to cross the river. Clip-clopping across the bridge on a sunny day and stopping in the passing bays to chat to friends was seen as an important part of the Coromandel lifestyle by horses, "if we wanted to be run down by maniac drivers or choked by car fumes we'd move to Auckland". Graham added that he was very suspicious of claims that the old bridge was unsafe and needed a lot of money spent on it. He said he had contacted bridge builders from many different countries and no one had ever heard of a bridge that had large trucks going over it quite safely one minute and then only a nano-second later was in such a state of disrepair that it was deemed unsafe to even look at it in case it fell down. He said more likely than not it was just another case of philistines trying to steal our heritage using scare tactics and neither him nor any other of the horses would be fooled. To prove a point Graham leapt over the barrier and galloped up and down the bridge several times while neighing loudly - "rock solid". To help raise funds and awareness for Save the Children and the work it does worldwide. This year’s Fun Run, on November 16, starting and finishing at the Thames Rugby and Sports Club will be in two parts. The event started in the Kauaeranga Valley but two years ago it was decided, for safety reasons, to use the waterfront walkway. Last year it was on the Hauraki Rail Trail. At prize giving participants were asked which course they preferred. The majority of 5km and 10km walkers and runners voted for the waterfront walkway. The half marathon will once again be held on the Hauraki Rail Trail. Branch president and co-ordinator Lyn Hopkins said it should work well as people will have more room and those pushing buggies with appreciate being back on the concrete footpaths. “It’s a Fun Run that anyone can enter. We really would like to see more families involved in the 5km and 10km walks and runs and of course the half marathon walk and run for the more serious competitors. I would like to thank the business community once again for their support.” FUN RUN Entry forms are available at the Save the Children store at 701a Pollen St Grahamstown, Thames FOLLOWING ON from Community Meeting th on 15 OCT at the GBD, organized by T3 (Transition Towns nd th Thames) & Karl Edmonds the was a 2 meeting on Tues 28 Oct where some Working Parties were formed. Here’s a summary from Mark Skelding Two clear directions came forward from the second meeting, at GBD, on Tuesday28th Oct- one in regard the Calendar, and the other in regard Town Co-ordination. Other comments included a spontaneous recognition from one of the participants of how wonderful the Grahamstown Gazette is as a local news vehicle. (“Awww, Thankyou! – Ed) We are working hard to be able to present some ideas on event co-ordination to the town community by early December, in time to make more detailed submissions to the Long Term Plan process. Equally, the calendar was seen as a very useful, relatively easy target that would have a good impact on building community conversation and interagency creativity. Calendar: The working party is looking at various options for an online planning Calendar that will be accessible to all event organizers. There is also a role that Social Media could play. Also consideration given to best process to "cluster" events to complement each other, rather than compete. Town Co-ordination: Events organisers commonly Chequers Courtyard Café 710 Pollen St, Grahamstown complain about lack of personnel, skills and resource. The working party in this area will be looking at what existing structures could be utilized and built on to provide better support and coordination for Town Events. The research will be asked for in time to bring a suggestion to an early December meeting of the Business Breakfast group, and the Grahamstown Business Association. The objective would be to have a more considered proposal in the Long Term Plan by mid-December Events: :Noted that the Calendar can start a ball rolling, and that the co-ordination will begin to build a base - even before or if a person is appointed - from which ideas can be developed. Therefore these were seen as less priority, but some exciting possiblities are in the offing.
