In last week’s
essay on the
Kashrut of quail,
I noted that the
London Beth
Din does not
permit quail
eggs and states
on the KLBD
website that
the Beth Din
cannot verify a continuous tradition of the local
eggs being kosher. I understand, though, that
quail eggs are served at events supervised under
the Federation. It is important to note that these
eggs are sourced directly from a farm where the
species of quail is approved.
It was great to see so many join us for Neil
Lazarus’ dynamic presentation on ISIS and the
current state of play in the Middle East. On
the one hand, he painted a grim picture of the
interplay of ethnic conflicts and the threats to
Israel from Gaza tunnels (Hamas), Golan rockets
(Hizbollah) and a potential tsunami of refugees
pushing westwards from Jordan. On the other
hand, he was optimistic that Israel would
weather this storm. He was definite that one of
the most significant contributions we can make
is to bolster Israel advocacy through getting
our kids, students and young professionals to
visit Israel – ideally on a structured programme.
In Esther Unmasked we looked at the portrayal
of Esther. Why is the Megillah named after
her (rather than Mordechai or the two of them
together)? What was her specific contribution
and how did she grow into her role? Having
looked at some Midrashim last week from the
rationalist standpoint of the Ibn Ezra (10891167), this week we saw a completely different
perspective through the gematriyas of R’
Eleazar of Worms (1176-1238). He weaves a
masterful numerological interplay between the
text and the Midrashic texture.
century’s most significant Jewish phenomena.
That’s Thursday evening 18th Feb, at 7:45pm,
in the Deal Hall.
Make a note of Sunday May 15th in your diary.
It’s the Sunday after Yom Hazikaron & Yom
Ha’atzmaut. Kinloss will be “Celebrating our
People and our Land.” It’s an exciting project
and you’ll be seeing the publicity and further
details very soon.
Congratulations to all the Morasha students
who celebrated their Chagigat Siddur this
week. We need to sustain the children’s
enthusiasm – for Tefillah and for Sifrei Kodesh.
Much as I like having access to countless tomes
on my Bar Ilan University Jewish Virtual Library
USB drive – and the knowledge that so much
Jewish wisdom is but a Google Search away,
it’s the real books that have meaning for me.
Sometimes it’s the dedication from a friend or
family member. Sometimes it’s the memory
of using that volume in a Shiur; I hear the
presenter’s voice and remember the thrill of
being enlightened. Sometimes it’s the margin
note I’ve made which takes me back in time to
a particular moment and thought. Sometimes
it’s the volume’s own story – printed 200 years
ago and a family heirloom that has been held
by my grandparents and their grandparents.
I know some people get nostalgic about the
different wine stains in their Haggadas. Like
the rings in a tree, they chart its age.
Getting our children interested in reading
is like planting a tree – quite literally a tree
of knowledge. We nurture our saplings and
encourage them to dig deep roots of wisdom
and wide roots - cultural breadth. What a thrill
to watch them grow in stature and for us to
see their individual branches of interest and to
savour the fruits of learning.
Join me in extending a warm welcome to
Jonathan Arkush QC, President of the Board
of Deputies. He’ll address us after the service.
Next week, join us as I interview Rabbi David Wishing you and all your families a Shabbat
Eliezrie, whose recent book, “The Secret of Shalom.

message and marketing of one of the 20th

Lifestyle and Disease Prevention
Some Thoughts on the Sidra,
TERUMAH BY LAUREN LEVIN
My Israeli cousins always give their children wonderful and original names. A few years
ago one of my cousins had a baby born and his circumcision was on Yom Ha’atzmaut.
Everyone waited with baited breath to hear what he would be called. Yet when the
Chazan proclaimed it, it was not a name I was all that familiar with…Dvir. What did
it mean?
In fact the word ‘Dvir’ is used in the Bible as part of a description of King Solomon’s
building of the first temple (Kings 1:6:5). It refers to the Holy of Holies. ‘Dvir’ is from
the verb ‘ledaber’ – to speak. The Holy of Holies is called ‘Dvir’ because it was from
that place, in between the two Cherubs that G-d spoke to the Jewish nation. At the
heart of the Mishkan and later the Temple was the Holy of Holies, the dvir, the place
where there was direct communication, revelation; a meeting place for man and G-d.
As we receive the command to make G-d a ‘dwelling place’ in this week’s parsha, we
ask ourselves if this was then the purpose of the Temple. There is much to indicate that
it is, and in fact Nachmanides (1194-1270) argues strongly that this was the purpose of
the Temple. To this end, he holds that the most important feature of the Temple was
the ark, as he says, “Therefore, He first gave the commandment about the ark and the
kaporet, for they are first in importance.”
By contrast Maimonides (1135-1204) views the command to build a temple differently.
He writes, “It is a positive commandment to make a house unto the Lord, designed
for the offering of sacrifices and for making thereto a pilgrimage three times every
year. For it is said: ‘And let them make Me a sanctuary’”. According to this the central
feature of the Temple was the alter, and the sacrificial service. This shifts the purpose
of the ‘dwelling place’ to a way for humankind to serve G-d, and to be constantly
active in this regard.
Whilst it is unclear which feature is ultimately more important, we can integrate both
schools of thought and view the Temple as having a dual purpose. In Exodus 25:8 G-d
says ‘build me a sanctuary and I will dwell within them’. The sages teach that this is
written in the plural to remind us that G-d will dwell within each and every individual
if we make room for Him in our lives. Our relationship with G-d is based on how we
act down in this world. Today the sacrificial service is replaced by prayer and good
deeds. We hope that elicited by our good deeds, we will be met in kind, through G-d’s
dwelling amongst us as a community, in our homes and within ourselves.

RABBI LAWRENCE:
ON ONE FOOT
Mezuzah Matters
I’m often asked
questions
about Mezuzot
and this week,
while
the
Lawrence family
is in the midst
of moving house a number of mezuzah matters
come to mind.
Mezuzot should be on all doorways to almost
all rooms in a house, not just the front door. A
doorway in halacha is defined by two uprights
and a lintel across the top. This includes archways
between rooms (as long as the vertical uprights
are 80cms before they begin to curve).
Gates without a lintel (which is common on
garden gates) don’t require a Mezuzah. Garages
do. Toilets and bathrooms should not have a
Mezuzah. If a room is smaller than 4 cubits by
4 cubits (about 6’ by 6’), it does not need a
mezuzah. This determines whether utility rooms
and laundry rooms need.
The Mezuzah should be placed on the right
hand doorpost entering the house. It should be
angled into the room and within the top third of
the doorway. With interconnecting rooms, there
are two traditions concerning which room’s righthand doorpost should be used. One is that it
should be on the right hand side of the doorpost
where the door opens away from you. The other
is that it is on the right hand doorpost of the room
leading into a more important room. Bedrooms
and dining rooms count as “important”. Where
there are multiple doorways (such as onto a patio
or garden) each requires a mezuzah. The house is
more important than the garden, so the mezuzah
should be on the right hand side coming in from
the garden
On sliding doors, some place the mezuzah on
the permanent wall to the right. However, if the
door slides to the right, it is preferable to place it
on the left hand side of the sliding partition itself
as this forms the right hand doorpost when you
walk through!
When you leave a property which will
subsequently be occupied by Jewish people, your
mezuzot should be left behind on the doors. If
you have particularly valuable Mezuzot, they can
be replaced with cheaper ones (so long as they
are kosher). If the new family wish to bring their
own Mezuzot, then you can take yours away.
In Israel, Mezuzot have to be put up on the day
of occupancy. In the Diaspora one can delay for
up to a month. This is because we hold that all
houses in Israel are permanent but in Diaspora
they are considered temporary. The notable
exception to the rule is a Succah. As this is by
definition temporary, even in Israel, it needs no
Mezuzah.
Mezuzot should be checked periodically (twice
every seven years). Mezuzot which are on outside
doors are particularly vulnerable to changes in
temperature and moisture which can affect the
parchment and the ink. It’s preferable to place
them in sealed cases.
Checking should be undertaken by a qualified
Sofer. At Kinloss, we use Rabbi Bennaroch (020
8922 5958).
...And finally, some Mezuzah trivia. You know
that the Mezuzah contains two paragraphs from
the Torah (“Shema” Devarim 6:4-9 and “Vehaya”
Devarim 11:13-21). These are the Biblical sources
of the mitzvah.
You’ve probably seen the outside of a rolled
Mezuzah and noticed the “Shin Daled Yud”, one
of the holy names of G-d.
Also on outside of a Mezuzah and written upside
down is the strange expression KUZU BMUKSZ
KUZU. In fact these are the letters Khaf Vav Zayin
Khaf, Bet Mem Vav Khaf Samech Zayin, Khaf Vav
Zayin Khaf. It’s a “code”. If you go back one letter
this transposes to Yud Hay Vav Hay, Aleph Lamed
Hay Yud Nun Vav, Yud Hay Vav Hay – more familiar
words – Hashem Elokaynu Hashem.
Of course, it’s not enough that our houses and
doorways look Jewish from the outside; it’s the
Jewish life on the inside that matters. On the
one hand the Mezuzah represents Hashem’s
protection of our homes. On the other, it is a
warning and reminder of the message of this
week’s parasha, that Hashem wishes to dwell
amongst us, even within the privacy of our homes.
What a prestigious houseguest we have. And
what a responsibility to have a home that makes
Him welcome!
And when we’re unpacked, we very much look
forward to the chance to host you!
