OVER THE TOP!
Permanent deacons are a familiar site in parishes
throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit. They
assist the priest at Mass by preaching the
Gospel and delivering the homily, and also
celebrate funerals, take Communion to the
homebound, and coordinate the Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults. Some permanent
deacons serve outside of parishes, including as
chaplains at hospitals and colleges.
Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal
support the Office for Clergy and Consecrated
Life, and the Permanent Diaconate Information
Team, as well as provide assistance for men in
formation at Sacred Heart Major Seminary.
For more information on the permanent diaconate, or other CSA-funded programs, ministries,
and services, please go to www.AOD.org.
Many thanks to those who have already
responded to our St. Clare Catholic Services
Appeal with a gift or a pledge. Because of your
generosity we have exceeded our Goal!
Remember, all gifts received over our target are
returned to the parish. Until now, such gifts
were used to reduce our parish debt. If you
have not already responded, please do so
today.
Thank You for your support!

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS
Cycle C (Luke)
12th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Prayer is a fundamental principle of Christian stewardship. St. Luke, in today’s Gospel, emphasizes that Jesus
always took time to pray before major decisions or
events in His ministry. As St. Padre Pio stated, Prayer is
the oxygen for the soul. Making time for daily prayer is
essential for our spiritual journey, and for us to advance
in discipleship. Jesus indicates in this Gospel passage
that discipleship also requires acknowledging Him as
Messiah, denial of self, daily shouldering of one’s cross,
and selfless love for others.

From the Pastor’s Desk
I hope you had a great week.
Once again we offer our prayers and
love to all of our Fathers . Thank you to our
Knights for preparing and serving a special
breakfast on Father’s Day. Extra special
thanks to our Knights for their donation of all
of the profits from their St. Patrick’s Day Dinner and for a generous final payment on their
Campaign pledge. Thank you to our choirs
who since last September have led us faithfully through our Eucharistic celebrations.
During July and August they will get a welldeserved rest and during these two months
we will have music provided by our own Dr.
David Troiano. Of course, if anyone by any
chance, discovers during the summer that
they possess the talent to sing or play an
instrument, you are welcome to join us in
September.
Saints of this week.
There are several memorials of the saints this
week. Monday - St. John the Baptist, Thursday
- St. Cyril of Alexandria, Friday - St. Irenaeus,
and Saturday - Sts. Peter and Paul. Each one
of them was a great inspiration to their
contemporaries and they still are till this day.
Let me just say few words about the Solemnity
of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist.
John's birth is one of three that is honored
and celebrated by the Church; the other two
are the birth of the Lord and the birth of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. We have always seen in
John a model of discipleship and of what it
means to make Christ the center of one's life.
Even the universe takes note as John and
Jesus enter this world with the longest day
this weekend. Learn something new about
the saints and see that even today they
provide a lesson for our faith journey.
CSMA
Eight years ago, on June 19, 2005 in Warsaw,
Poland, in the presence of 50,000 people and
the members of the Michaelite Fathers and
Sisters from around the world, the Papal
Delegate elevated into the ranks of blessed
the founder of the Michaelite Fathers, Fr.
Bronislaw Markiewicz (1848-1912). On that
day this past week, the General Superior of
our Congregation, Fr. Kazimierz Radzik,
elevated our Canadian delegation into the
North American Vice-Province of St. Kateri
Takakwitha. I have stepped down as the
Superior of our delegation after two terms in
the office. Our new Superior is Fr. Joe
Dabrowski, currently ministering as the pastor
of St. Mary, Italian parish, in London, ON. It is
a great news for our community and for our
parish as being part of the universal church
around the globe. May our blessed founder
intercede for our parish, school, and community.
New Budget
Our business manager and Finance Committee
prepared our budget for the new fiscal year
2013/14. Please take a look at our financial
situation. If there are any questions, comments, or concerns please contact Susie
Frazer at 313-647-5022 or Larry Keelan at
313-885-7754. Thank you to both of them for
keeping our parish fiscally responsible and
viable. We are not a big parish, /only 706
registered families in comparison to 1980 2250 registered,/ but we are and can be even
more a vital, healthy, faith filled, and joyful
parish. As the days become warmer and
people camp and do weekend escapades,
our Sunday contributions are going down
slightly. Remember that while you are away
for the summer the expenses of running our
parish continue in spite of your absence, so
upon your return, make a point to catch up on
your financial generosity and responsibility to
your parish.
Summer
While you are on holidays from schools, colleges,
and universities, we remind you that WE ARE
NOT ON HOLIDAYS! The church is still open
with regular weekday and weekend Masses
and the sacrament of Reconciliation is still
available on Saturdays. On Thursday evening
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is available for you to come and pray at the feet of the
Lord. As an added incentive in this very warm
weather - St. Clare church is air-conditioned.
You can pray in a comfortable and cool
environment.
A summer blessing prayer
Walk along beside me, Jesus, as I begin the
months of summer. As I work, play, enjoy
family time and friendships, may I hear your
voice within me guiding me toward all that is
right and good. Give me faith in your presence, knowing that you walk beside me in
everything I do. Gracious and loving Jesus,
thank you for the gift of summer. May the
warmth of its sun and the beauty of its light
remind me daily of your love for me. Amen.
Have a great week,
Fr. Andrew

St. Clare Sports Update:
A hearty thank you to all who donated
to our Annual Booster Drive. The
revenue is greatly appreciated as we
continue to make improvements to our
gymnasium. The sports teams continue
to be a source of pride for our parish. St
Clare provides CYO sports not only for
our school children and St. Clare
Religious Ed students but also for
neighboring parishes. This past year we
had children from St. Ambrose, St.
Philomena, and St. Matthew participating in our program.
The St. Clare Golf outing is Friday July
26. This is a wonderful celebration of
St. Clare. Past and Present. Many come
from long distances to enjoy a
fun-filled day. If you do not golf
attend the After-Glow party which
features many door prizes is held at the
Grosse Pointe Park Tompkin’s Center.
Congratulations to former Falcons:
Connor Fannon who led the University
Liggett School to the Division 4 Baseball Championship. He pitched and was
the winning pitcher in the championship game, semi-final game, Regional
game and a District game. Fannon
signed with Oakland University.
Gina Valgoi was a recipient of the
prestigious Detroit Catholic High
School League College Athlete of the
Year Award. Valgoi ran for Loyola
University in Chicago and set countless
track and cross country records there.
After St. Clare she attended Regina
High school.

St. Clare of Montefalco Parish
Loan History
In Summer 1998, St. Clare of Montefalco started the Diamond Jubilee Capital Campaign to cover the
cost of a large renovation planned for the Parish. This renovation included upgrades to the Church,
the social hall and technology. Unfortunately, the project ran over budget and additional debt was
incurred. At the conclusion of the Diamond Jubilee campaign, the parish was left with a large debt,
accumulating interest at a rate of 5.5%.
In the summer of 2004 the Trinity Capital Campaign was initiated to pay down the remainder of the
debt. Excess CSA payments and special bequests to the parish were also applied to the debt, including an estate bequest of over $400,000. The loan was reduced significantly but a balance still
remained.
Recently, the Archdiocese of Detroit called for a Diocesan wide campaign to fulfill the goals of the
Archbishop by strengthening schools, parishes in Detroit and Sacred Heart Seminary so that all may
be better served. St. Clare started the Changing Lives Together campaign in the fall of 2012 with the
goal of paying off the debt, repairing the parking lot and repairing/replacing the aging boilers. It was
difficult to ask parishioners to donate to a third campaign, especially during difficult economic times.
The parishioners of St. Clare came through again! There was a tremendous response to the Changing
Lives Together campaign, parishioners continued to make donations using the debt reduction
envelopes and an anonymous donor recently made a donation equal to the remaining balance on the
loan. The loan is now paid in full and parking lot repairs will take place this summer. The boilers will
be evaluated over the summer and all campaign funds that continue to come in are being set aside in
savings.
