Thanks, Anita Marley, Editor 3 The Soundpost In Memoriam SAD NEWS ~~ SAMUEL NECOCHEA Feb. 16, 1928—Mar. 3, 2013 We lost one of our beloved OTFC members, Sam Necochea. March 3, 2013, Sam left us to go join the great fiddle band in Heaven. We have enjoyed him, & his fiddling & guitar playing, & vocals at our Dist.7 OTFC meetings & OTFC gigs at senior facilities, & at his gigs at various venues. Sam & his wife, Dixie, have been members of Dist.7 OTFC since May In my early days in District 9, in the 1980's, when I was not a fiddler but mostly a bluegrass mandolinist and guitarist, I had the pleasure of backing up Troy on guitar any number of times, when he would play his three fiddle tunes on stage as part of the District 9 jam. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/contracostatimes/obituary.aspx?n=jesse -king&pid=162929362&fhid=2175 He was a friend. Bob Palasek 4 The Soundpost District 1 We are a little late with our news because we missed the last Soundpost but will be caught up by the next issue. We are busy preparing for the State contest and will have details of all the events in the May-Jun issue of the Soundpost. We supported the celebration of Christmas in a big way with three groups providing music in our community this year: The Riverside String Band and Rayburn and the Coerced played at the Bidwell Bar Association’s Frontier Christmas; The Riverside String Band played at the Lake Oroville Country Club’s Christmas Party Rayburn and the Coerced with Allison Woodruff played at the Country Crest Christmas Party The Riverside String Band with Allison Woodruff played in support of the Oroville Optimist Club’s annual Ring and Sing for the Salvation Army. We are having great success with the Fiddle Group Workshops. One reason is the development of our Fiddle Group Workshop Tunebooks by Jimi Beeler and Zeke Walker. These tunebooks are conveniently constructed with a 3 ring binder with slip-in transparent sheet protectors and feature 24 fiddle tunes with music notation, guitar chords and fiddle tabs. If you are interested in purchasing one of these tunebooks contact me via email ljendro@msn.com or call me at (530) 533-1413. If you are in the area, our new meeting place is Feather River Senior Center as of January 27 th; we meet from 2 to 5pm on the 4th Sunday of the month. Come join us! Pictures from our Christmas Party: Larry Jendro, President & his group Time to get ready for all those fiddle contests coming up! 5 The Soundpost District 7 The best kept secret and bargain in San Diego is The District 7 California State Old Time Fiddler’s Association (CSOTFA). If you or a loved one has an interest in becoming a fiddler, making new friends, learning traditional fiddle songs in an accepting atmosphere, all for less than $20 per year, have I got a recommendation for you. The Fiddle Club meets most every Sunday from noon to 3:00 p.m. The people who run the club are some of the nicest, most supportive people in the world. For example, the first time I brought my two beginner fiddler daughters, ages 6 and 8, to the Club, they were welcomed into the circle and immediately given an opportunity to take turns playing the fiddle tunes they knew, which may have totaled three, if we were lucky. If you’ve never sat with the band, it’s a unique experience; to be immersed in the energy and musical vibration really differs from sitting in the audience. Our very first time attending the Club, Sam Necochea called his dear wife, Dixie, at their home (miles from the meeting) and asked her to bring a new violin as a gift for our youngest daughter, as he wanted her to have a better instrument. Aside from being an incredibly gifted and famous singer and musician, devoted family man, and awesome cowboy, Sam immediately took our girls under his wings. This big-hearted act of spontaneous generosity touched our family deeply and set us on the path to becoming huge fans of the club and its members, who have and continue to go out of their way every week to include and mentor our girls. My husband, Jim, now plays guitar with the club too. Admittedly, at first we were all a little intimidated and resistant to giving up outdoor or free play time to sit with this group and mostly listen to them play because of the dearth of songs we knew how to play. No one in the club judged or condemned us for the girls’ short attention spans or continuous trips to the bathroom and the delicious snack table. However, we hung in there and now the girls cherish the people, their guidance, the experience of being embraced, encouraged and a real part of the circle of amazing fiddlers and other musicians, and have learned many new fiddle songs in the two years we’ve been members. The club has even started offering instruction, breaking down a few choice songs for the less experienced fiddlers, on the second Sunday of the month. Members are constantly offering tips and giving the girls all kinds of praise, opportunities to play and even sharing sheet music. The Fiddle Club also sponsors scholarships for children attending The Julian Family Fiddle Camp. Ours are the lucky recipients of partial scholarships this year largely due to the generosity of the Club and one of its members, who donated “the lion’s share” of scholarship money. We also really appreciate the historical connection that this group provides to the origin of fiddle in the United States of America and beyond. Our children are also involved in the San Diego Young Artist Symphony (SDYAS.org), where they learn classical songs and techniques and take private lessons with the fabulous Jane Frey, a well known Suzuki teacher and conductor at SDYAS. We view the Fiddle Club as a wonderful compliment to their private instruction and orchestra, as it is a fantastic opportunity to be immersed in traditional old time fiddle music with people, who are marvelous musicians and have an interest in passing down these songs and ability to improvise and jam in a non-competitive atmosphere. On behalf of Willow, Violet, Jim, and Lauren, thank you District 7! By: Lauren Derstine Humphrey March 12, 2013 6 The Soundpost News from District 9 Our officers are in place for 2013. President - Tom Clausen Vice President - Joe Pavaglianti Secretary -Dian Brown Treasurers – Jean Kalvig and Pearl Ray Membership – Carl Brown District Director – Ruth Oveland Advisors – Billy Smith, John Durbin, and Aileen McAdoo. Appointed positions include: Newsletter editor – Bruce Goble Webmaster – Dave Dalton Sunshine Lady – Jeannette Amick. There were quite a few members of District 9 who were able to attend the State Contest in Oroville in March. District 9 has the responsibility for the Registration Process and I really appreciate those who volunteered to help this year. At our monthly jams, we enjoy having all the musicians up on stage at the beginning and at the end of our jam time. It gives even the shyest person an opportunity to play with the group. Larry Sadler, our MC, encourages people to sign up to play after we’ve enjoyed a delicious potluck lunch. An open invitation is extended to all of you, musicians and music lovers, to join us on the 4 th Sunday of the month. Our location can be found on page 2 of the Soundpost. We hope you’ll join us when you can. Jimi Beeler Contest MC Tex Ash The Soundpost The California Bluegrass Association is very pleased to finally offer an instructional camp for kids during our 38th Annual Father's Day Festival in Grass Valley this year. We will still offer Kids on Bluegrass, our performance activity for young people and our expanded KidFest, our recreational activity. We have hired Bluegrass Camps for Kids (www.bluegrasscampsforkids.com) to produce a four day camp for 8-16 year old young people. Beginning to advanced musicians are welcome to enroll in this camp and it will include instruction on multiple instruments, dance, songwriting, singing, and a performance on one of our stages on Saturday. The faculty will focus on bluegrass, old time and folk music. Bluegrass Camps for Kids produces free standing camps in many states including Alaska and Hawaii and also produces camps attached to festivals. Please go to their website to read about their program. We are enrolling now via our website www.cbaontheweb.org. The four day camp (Thursday through Sunday, June 13-16, 2013) costs $300 (some scholarships are available) and does require that a parent/guardian attend the festival. (We need to have an adult on site if needed). I can be contacted by email at darbyandbruno@comcast.net or telephone 510 735-6364 for any questions. Please forward this email to any families you think might be interested or to any instructors who teach young people. We are registering students now and will limit attendance this first year to 35 students. Thank you, Darby Brandli, President and Liaison to the Youth Program California Bluegrass Association Cloverdale Contest has new dates & new weathr!! The Cloverdale Fiddle Festival will be held May 4-5, 2013 at the Citrus Fairgrounds in Cloverdale. For example we have added youth and adult guitar and mandolin divisions. We will feature top notch entertainment in the world of of time and bluegrass music as well as workshops.
