THE BREEZE January 2016, Volume 33, Number 6 General Meeting – “Women and Prison” Wednesday, January 13, 4:00 pm Tehachapi Community Congregational Church 100 East E Street Friendship Hall The focus of our general meeting in January is “Women and Prison”, and promises to be a fascinating program. A panel of four, including (our own) Dr. Sheila Frank, Del Troy, Mari Goodman, and David Crounse, will discuss prison life (and related topics) for both men and women. All four have worked at CCI (California Correctional Institution – Tehachapi) at various times, and can provide valuable insight as to “life inside the walls…”. Dr. Frank is a clinical psychologist who, in addition to working at the prison for more than a decade (as a caseworker), has 30 years of experience in her own private practice. Del Troy, local historian and founding member of Tehachapi Heritage League and Museum, will talk about the early years of CCI – when it originally opened (in 1932) as a women’s prison. Mari Goodman is currently a Senior Field Representative for Assembly member Rudy Salas, and has been involved with recent CA Propositions that have affected prison work/education programs. While working for the CCI here, Mari also dealt with women’s prisons, and can speak to the differences that she encountered between the two types of facilities. And David Crounse (son of our current AAUW President) is a captain at the CCI, having worked there for over 20 years. He will discuss current prison conditions, and how they’ve changed over the past several years. You won’t want to miss this interesting and informative program!! (Please come a few minutes early, in order to get refreshments and be seated, in order for us to start the program at 4PM…thank you!) Lunch Bunch by Jan Combs In December 17 of us enjoyed a meal together at Perfetto. That included Sonja's daughter, Cindy, who was here from Idaho to be with Sonja and help out while Jerry was hospitalized. It also included 2 very new members, Debbie Hand-Cutler and Nancy Guidry and 2 long time members we haven't seen for a long time, B.J. Anania and Janice Tietz. All present agreed that the Food and Ambiance rated a 5 on our very precise 1-5 score and the Service a 4 3/4 since it was a little slow but considering there was only one server, it was really quite good. Susie entertained us with a recitation of Cinderella, which we all enjoyed. On January 12, which is the second Tuesday as always, at 12:00 we will be having lunch at The King of Siam, the Thai Restaurant which is on Tucker across the street from Albertsons. Again, we are asking that you please let Phyllis or Jan know if you plan to attend. Story Tellers by Phyllis Belcher When we met last, we set January 5th as the date to have our scripts written or check on progress. Come at 3:00 to home of Phyllis Belcher, 605 S. Snyder. We already have 3 requests for performances. SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR WOMEN Thanks to all who supported the recent raffle! The winner is Diana Fifer. A special thanks to those who donated silent auction items: Helen McAllister, Norm Prigge, Lynne Bauer and Phyllis Aitelli. 4 THE BREEZE AAUW TEHACHAPI MOUNTAIN BRANCH Post Office Box 273, Tehachapi CA 93561 5
