‘Dreams’ dwells in landscape where author grew up

quiet self-reliance, tells the story
that inspired her famous novel.
One Sunday, the pastor of her
church told Edwards the true story of a man who discovered in his
40s that he had a brother with
Down syndrome who had been
in an institution since birth.
“I thought this would make a
really good novel,” Edwards recalls while sipping peppermint
tea, “but in the next heartbeat I
thought, ‘I’ll never write that
novel’ because I didn’t think the
story was mine to write. I didn’t
know anything about Down syndrome. I just didn’t feel that I
would write it.”
But Edwards couldn’t get the
idea out of her head. “I remember being very struck by the secret at the center of the family,”
Edwards recalls. “How even if no
one knew the secret, the dynamics of the secret would influence
the family for decades.”
She thought about it for several
years, and then her world collided with the one she would soon
write about. “I was invited to do a
writing workshop for a group of
adults who had disabilities of various kinds, and it brought the
idea to the surface again. I began
to take the idea of a novel more
seriously.”
When she did begin writing,
she says, the first chapter came
quickly. After that, she was curious to find out what would happen in the story and plowed
ahead. She hadn’t a clue it would
become a publishing sensation. “I
had no idea whatsoever,” she
says. “I wrote it without a contract. I wrote it just because I
wanted to write it.”
Nothing, she says, could have
prepared her for readers’ response. “It had been so exciting
but distracting to think about this
whole world who had read Memory Keeper’s Daughter.”
But success hasn’t changed her.
The modest home in a middleclass Lexington suburb where she
and her family have lived for
more than a decade does not reflect her financial success. It’s
decorated simply, accented by artifacts she and her husband collected during the five years they
spent teaching English in Malaysia, Japan and Cambodia in the
Edwards’ debut

1990s after she completed her
graduate work in linguistics.
They run errands and transport their daughters to afterschool activities in a Toyota Prius.
Their most recent “splurge” was
having the basement refinished.
Even though she had published an award-winning short
story collection, The Secrets of the
Fire King, in 1997, it was Memory
Keeper’s that brought her fame.
Paperback marvel
Published in hardcover in
2005, it sold a healthy but modest 60,000 copies. It became a
huge best seller in paperback a
year later, thanks to a perfect
alignment of publishing strategies: Penguin’s aggressive
promotional campaign — they
marketed it as if it were a new
hardcover novel, not just a pa-
perback reprint — and energetic
hand-selling by booksellers, especially independents.
The staff at the Blue Willow
Bookshop in Houston, for example, was so enthusiastic they decorated their display window with
a gauzy, white baby dress superimposed over a black background — just like the haunting
cover of the book.
Fervent fans told friends and
family about the remarkable novel and the tragic secret at its center. The book also became, and
still is, a book club staple.
It was Edwards’ storytelling
prowess that gave the book its
punch.
“We all have secrets. We’ve all
kept secrets. We’ve had secrets
kept from us and we know how
that feels,” Edwards says. “It’s a
universal experience that connected with people.”

part in a novel Edwards began
before The Memory Keeper’s
Daughter, then tucked away after
numerous drafts left her feeling it
was going nowhere. When she
returned to it years later, the novel took on a new life.
“After Memory Keeper’s Daughter, it took me a few months to
shut out the world,” Edwards recalls. “I really had to turn off the
Internet and sort of cloister myself away from the world again
and sink into that psychic space
to write again.
“I love Memor y Keeper’s
Daughter, but in some ways I
think The Lake of Dreams is a
stronger book,” Edwards says. “I
was able to tell the story I wanted
to tell. That’s all you can ever do
as a writer. From there on you
have no control over it.”
So far, reviews have been
mostly favorable.
Library Journal wrote that The
Lake of Dreams lacks “the melodramatic sizzle of its predecessor” but Booklist calls it “a powerful story,” and Kathryn Popoff
of Borders think it’s “captivating.”

Books in Danville, Calif., says she
likes The Lake of Dreams more
than The Memor y Keeper’s
Daughter. “I absolutely loved it.”
Edwards will hear what her
fans have to say this month. She’s
in the first week of an 18-stop
cross-country tour. (She appears
in Brookline, Mass., tonight.)
After a visit to Joseph-Beth
bookstore and then a drive
through Lexington’s downtown,
Edwards is perched on a turquoise-colored stool at Wheeler
Pharmacy’s circa-1960 lunch
counter. She’s drinking Ale-8One, a soft drink made in Kentucky. It’s a chilly winter day and
one of her last moments of relaxation before the tour begins.
Pressed for what will happen
post-tour, Edwards says she has
an idea for a new novel, but she’s
not ready to talk about it.
“I do have a sense of the next
book,” she says, “but I’m taking a
break. I really want to be able to
enjoy whatever happens to The
Lake of Dreams.”

Eminem, the best-selling artist of the past decade, also moves up three slots to No. 7 on the list
of biggest product movers in the SoundScan era.
The rapper has sold 39.6 million albums since
1999, according to year-end data released
Wednesday by Nielsen SoundScan.
Garth Brooks still holds history’s top spot with
68.5 million, followed by The Beatles with 62.1
million. With 53.1 million, Mariah Carey is fourth,
then Metallica (52.7 million), Celine Dion (51.2
million) and George Strait (42.4 million).
Given the prolific young acts on 2010’s list, the
historical ranking could shift dramatically in a few
years. Then again, The Beatles continue to demonstrate uncanny sales clout 40 years after splitting.

child and young woman,” says Eileen Miot of Paris, Ky., a huge fan
of the book, whose 3-year-old
daughter, Marie-Claire, has
Down syndrome. But it’s the love
at the center of the story, she
says, that has made it universally
popular.
“It’s the deeper story, the love
story,” Miot says. “Everybody understands a story about love and
missing out on love.”
Edwards tells a very different
tale in The Lake of Dreams.
It’s the story of Lucy Jarrett,
who returns to her hometown of
Lake of Dreams after her mother
is injured in a minor car accident.
Lucy had fled Lake of Dreams a
decade before, after her father’s
death by drowning.
Her visit becomes a search for
resolution from the heartbreak
she suffered after her father’s
death, as well as a detective story
when she discovers old letters in
her mother’s house. They lead
her to investigate what happened
to the letter writer, Rose, her
great-grandfather’s suffragette
sister who was forced to give up
her illegitimate daughter.
The fictional town in which the
novel is set is located in the Finger Lakes Region of New York
state, where Edwards grew up. “I
knew the lakes well,” says Edwards who shows a visitor a tiny,
painted Asian bowl that holds
pieces of shale she gathered on a
Finger Lakes beach more than a
decade ago.
The bowl sits on her writing
desk and was an inspiration during the creation of The Lake of
Dreams. “One of the pleasures of
writing the book,” she says, “was
to be able to dwell in that landscape in my imagination again.

approving the procedures for soliciting and tabulating the
votes on, and for objecting to, the Plan, (c) approving the
manner and form of notices and documents relating to the
Plan, (d) approving the procedures for conducting a rights
offering, and (e) authorizing the employment and retention
of Epiq Bankruptcy Solutions, LLC as subscription agent.
On December 23, 2010, the Ontario Superior Court of
Justice (Commercial List) granted an order that, among
other things, recognized and gave full force and effect in
Canada to the Disclosure Statement Order and Solicitation
Procedures Order (the “Canadian Court’s Order”). As
a result of the Canadian Court’s Order, the U.S. Court’s
Disclosure Statement Order and Solicitation Procedures
Order, and the procedures established thereby, apply to all

Power Company (Pepco) has
applied to install a 52-mile 500 kV
electric transmission line from Possum Point in Virginia to Chalk Point
in Prince George’s County, Maryland, as part of the initial phase
of the Mid-Atlantic Power Pathway
(MAPP) project, a 150-mile transmission line extending from Possum Point to Calvert County, under
the Chesapeake Bay, and across the
lower Eastern Shore to Indian River,
Delaware. The purpose of the first
phase of MAPP is to add a second
circuit to existing structures within
Pepco right-of-way and to construct
new towers to support the second
circuit across the Potomac River.
The project will permanently impact
117.852 acres of nontidal forested
wetlands through tree clearing activities, temporarily impact 60.023
acres of nontidal emergent wetlands through mat placement, and
will impact 30.934 acres of the
nontidal wetland buffer. Temporary
bridging will impact 350 linear feet
(0.350 acres) of waterways and
0.083 acres of the 100-year floodplain, and 11.307 acres of the 100year floodplain will be disturbed
through clearing activities. The
applicant proposes to mitigate for
permanent impacts through off-site
mitigation. The project extends
across the Potomac River from Possum Point to Moss Point in Charles
County, then along existing rightof-way to Burches Hill Substation
in Prince George’s County and to
Chalk Point Generating Station in
Prince George’s County. The project
crosses the Potomac River, Mattawoman Creek, Piscataway Creek,
Zekiah Swamp, and Patuxent River

Milner: Fears of double-dip recession recede
IMF to tell euro zone

Not surprisingly, business
confidence is on the upswing. In Germany, it’s higher
than at any point since the country’s reunification two decades
ago, despite the euro zone’s welldocumented debt miseries.
Commodities, which underpinned the sputtering Canadian
recovery, also seem to be roaring
back. Oil hit a two-year high on
Friday, and demand in such markets as China and Brazil is at record levels. Natural gas demand
in the U.S. is also shooting up.
In the stock market, the hottest
category is consumer discretionary – the stuff you may covet, but
stop buying when times get
tough. The S&P’s index of such
stocks, which includes car companies, media heavyweights and
retailers like McDonald’s and
Home Depot, has soared nearly
23 per cent this year.
There are still more than
enough trouble spots to temper
the enthusiasm, particularly in
the still depressed U.S. housing
sector. And some surprisingly
downbeat U.S. job numbers on
Friday, as well as a distressing
drop in Canadian private sector
employment, sent a few shivers
through the markets.
But fears of the dreaded double-dip recession have receded;
and investors, both amateurs and
pros, are becoming increasingly
bullish about equities. So if the
stock market retains its oft-touted role as a leading predictor of
where the economy is headed in
the next six to nine months, 2011
ought to shape up as a much better year than the nabobs of negativism would have us believe.
But the market has been wrong
plenty of times before, as veterans like renowned U.S. money
manager Rob Arnott can attest.
“I’m not terribly optimistic
about 2011,” declares Mr. Arnott,

bargains in the hedges that we
need in our portfolios, because
people will take their eye off
the inflation ball.

The stock market has almost
certainly got ahead of itself, he
says, putting the odds of another
recession in the U.S. at better
than 50 per cent. “What we have
is $1-trillion of stimulus buying a
half-trillion dollars of economic
recovery. And that’s not a very
good deal.”
And in Europe, the odds of the
debt crisis deepening also run
higher than 50-50. “It’s the bankrupt looking to be bailed out by
the near-bankrupt. That’s not a
formula for success.”
He concedes that U.S. corporate
profits will hold up reasonably
well in the coming year. But they
are destined to disappoint the
market by falling well short of
expectations. “What’s interesting
is that investors expect lofty
earnings growth when earnings
are already high. And they expect
anemic growth when earnings
have been savaged.” The reverse
tends to be the case.
Stock prices, Mr. Arnott argues,
tend to peak roughly at the time
the earnings growth rate peaks,
rather than the actual earnings

themselves. In other words, if
profits still rise in 2011, but at a
slower pace than this year, it
spells bad news for the market.
“A lot of folks think I’m a purveyor of doom and gloom,” he
says. Gee, I wonder where he got
that idea.
Mr. Arnott is best known in investing circles as an architect of
fundamental indexing, which assigns weightings to stocks based
on measures of economic success, including sales, profits and
dividends. It ignores market capitalizations, the basis of traditional indexes.
He is also known as a shrewd
prospector for opportunities in a
wide range of global investments.
Which explains why he does not
advocate sitting on the sidelines
until the cloud of confusion dissipates. “There’s a whole array of
relatively low-risk investments
that are interesting,” he says.
This is a good time, for instance, for investors to consider
adding a third pillar to their portfolios, alongside the traditional
stocks and bonds. The third pillar
would be designed primarily to
offset the risks of inflation,
whose arrival in our midst he believes is only a matter of time.
The obvious choices would include inflation-linked [real return] bonds and broadly
diversified commodities, but also, surprisingly, emerging-market
stocks and bonds.
“Emerging markets are a wonderful hedge against a reflationary world,” says Mr. Arnott, who
acknowledges some of these potential hedges are not exactly inexpensive. “But if we do have a
recession [in 2011], it won’t be inflationary, and it will create bargains in the hedges that we need
in our portfolios, because people
will take their eye off the inflation ball.”

The euro zone should have a bigger rescue fund for member
states in trouble, and the European Central Bank should boost
its bond buying to prevent the
sovereign debt crisis from derailing economic recovery, an IMF
report says.
International Monetary Fund

will present the report on the
economy of the 16 countries using the euro at a meeting on
Monday of euro zone finance
ministers and European Central
Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet.
“The recovery could still stay
the course, but this scenario
could now easily be derailed by
the renewed financial market
turmoil,” the IMF report said.
“The sovereign and financial
market storm affecting the periphery [of the euro zone] constitutes a severe downside risk.”
The IMF will tell the ministers
that while last week’s €85-billion
($114-billion) joint EU/IMF rescue
package for Ireland and a permanent mechanism for crisis resolution are welcome, they are not
enough.
The document said euro zone
rescue funds “should be deployed for countries undertaking
strong adjustment but remaining
under market pressure, using sufficient liquidity support to cope
with uncertain market responses
so as to minimize costs from
market risks and contagion.”
It was not clear from the document whether this meant the
IMF was advocating euro zone
help to Portugal, whose borrowing costs have risen sharply on
market concern over its high
debt and low growth, but which
has passed an austerity budget
for 2011.
“There is also a strong case for
increasing the resources available
for this safety net and making
their use more flexible, including
for the purpose of providing
more effective support to banking systems,” the report said.
The euro zone, together with
the IMF, now has a fund totalling
€750-billion to help governments
cut off from being able to borrow
on financial markets, in exchange for fiscal austerity and reforms. But economists and some
policy makers believe that
should more euro zone countries, such as Portugal, Spain or
even Italy, be forced to seek EU financial help, the fund would be
too small.
To prevent borrowing costs of
such countries from rising too
high, the ECB has been buying
their bonds on the secondary
market, but the purchases have
been moderate compared with
similar moves in the U.S.
The IMF report will be discussed at length at the euro zone finance ministers’ meeting on
Monday, a euro zone source said,
along with the current situation
on debt markets.
