Welcome to Harris Academy! Why are we here? Students attend Harris Academy for many different reasons – here are some: Credit deficiency Anxiety or other medical issues Child care Better fit BECAUSE SOMEONE CARES ABOUT YOU! Attendance Letter at 5, 8 and 10 days Conference request at 10 days Referral to Project Attend if absences persist Medical Issues – file a 504 Plan with Certificate of Incapacity Failure to earn credits due to absences – back to home HS Handbook - continued Lunch Juniors and Seniors have off-campus lunch, if the following conditions are met: Signed permission slips on file. Permission slips available next week. Passed all classes the previous quarter, after 7th week, passing all classes Are not tardy to block 4 class Sign out before leaving the building Underclassmen and Juniors/Seniors eating in cafeteria Avon students must open a new lunch account, money will not transfer from Avon Lunch is 12:38 – 1:08 Use ID badge to get through line faster No one may order lunch delivered to the building. May be brought by parent. Example: PLATO Next Steps – aka “Don’t Fear the Future” The most important thing we do is prepare you for the future. We will do this by: Taking field trips to workplaces such as Subaru, distribution warehouses, etc. Taking you to visit different post-high school educational options such as MidWest Tech, Ivy Tech and IUPUI Introducing you to Air Force, Marine, Navy and Army recruiters Encouraging you to enroll/stay enrolled in Area 31 Educating you about apprenticeship programs Work with you to meet 21st Century Scholar qualifications Schedule School day, 7:45 – 2:30 (M, T, Th, F); 7:45 – 2:00 (W) Period 1, full semester course; Blocks 1 – 4, quarter classes Advisory period, 11:04 – 11:23 for all students Breakfast, 7:20 – 7:40 (BHS), 8:10 – 8:25 (AHS), 8:30 – 8:40, Grab and Go Lunch, 12:40 – 1:08 Allows students to earn Quarter 1: July 28 – September 30 Quarter 2: October 3 – December 16 Quarter 3: January 3 – March 10 Quarter 4: March 13 – May 25 2X as many credits Calendar We follow the Brownsburg calendar! There is a copy in your registration packet. Notable differences: School dismisses at 2:00 pm every Wednesday (unless we have a 2-hour delay, then school dismisses at 2:30 pm) We do not have any 1-hour delay days. Avon students who drive are expected to be at Harris at 8:30 for 1st block. Bus riders will arrive late and go directly to 1st block. Our first day of school is July 28 Transportation Shuttle buses to and from Avon and Brownsburg High School Students are NOT to enter other buildings while waiting Drivers may enter through doors 1 and 5 Student drivers must get vehicle passes Shuttle for Avon arrives at 8:20 am, leaves at 2:20 pm Student Badges All students will have a badge Badges will be used to enter the building (Door 1) Badges will be used to pay for lunch, you have your badge, front of the line Cost to replace a badge is $3 Lanyards: Will be distributed with the badges DO NOT PUNCH YOUR BADGE! PUNCHING IN THE WRONG PLACE WILL CAUSE THE BADGE NOT TO WORK AND YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY ANOTHER! ALLOW HARRIS STAFF TO PUNCH YOUR BADGE! Supplies No published supply list. The following are suggestions: Notebook and folder for each class Pens/Pencils Scientific calculator for math classes Earbuds/Headphones TEXTBOOKS generally stay in classrooms During Registration Get picture taken for badge Buy parking tag Fill out/Turn in BCSC forms (to include lunch permission slip) Receive letter withdrawing lunch privileges if you didn’t earn all credits last quarter/semester Pay for lunch/Fill out lunch forms Pick up Harris Handbook Supplement Fill out application – if not done already Starting School Schedules are available at the front desk.
