Reidy CBA President Fall is fast arriving and the days are getting shorter. It has been a busy season for the CBA. After enjoying a great Fourth of July parade. August came and our annual Spinners outing was held under starry skies and perfect weather. The Spinners, although unable to earn a win, presented a fine game and excellent entertainment as usual. We ran out of tickets early this year and are planning to increase the number of tickets available for next year. that take place on the fields that do not currently have a scoreboard or a timer for games. Girls and Boys soccer, field hockey and lacrosse teams will be able to enjoy the scoreboard. In late September the scoreboard was presented to Athletic Director Jack Fletcher and members of the girl's field hockey team. Good Luck Lions! The groundbreaking ceremonies took place on October 9th for the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail. Café Madrid, a 30 seat restaurant in Parlmont Plaza on Alpine Lane opened a couple of weeks ago and because of the great response to this new restaurant they have already increased their hours! The Café was opened by Yazmin BadiasFadjo wife of Dr. Larry Fadjo from Chelmsford Dental and Salud Santibanez who have been best friends for over 20 years. The Café has been decorated with a Spanish flair and there are tables and chairs for dining-in along with a “mock” fireplace and comfortable couches for casual seating. Take out breakfast, lunch and dinner is also available. The family-style restaurant serves Spanish and Cuban dishes. Everything in the restaurant is homemade and it is authentic Spanish cuisine with a Cuban flavor. Breakfast specialties include: Hot Mediterranean Salmon which is salmon in a hot crispy croissant with cream cheese, onions, lettuce and tomatoes; Madrid Omelet which is a potato omelet in a hot crispy croissant; the Havana Omelet which is eggs with chorizo and cheese in a hot crispy croissant and the Chelmsford Omelet which is eggs, cheese and bacon in a hot crispy croissant. Their Butter Croissants, Bagels and Muffins are also delicious! www.ftd.com/feeneyfloristofchelmsford 8 One of their most popular lunch dishes is the Cuban Pork Sandwich which is roasted pork loin, black forest ham, pickle slims and Café Madrid’s homemade mustard dressing. All sandwiches come with Café Madrid’s homemade Spanish potato salad and your choice of homemade French white bread, French wheat grain bread or croissant. Some of the other sandwiches include the Gorgonzola Roast Beef Sandwich; Madrid Parma Sandwich and the Mediterranean Tuna Sandwich. You can also order one of their delicious salads which include: Health Nut Salad; Caprice Salad; Mediterranean Salad; Spanish Madrid Salad; Cape Cod Nut Salad or the Madrid Garden Salad. There are also Hot Sandwiches/Paninis; Paellas (for one) and Tapas! Don’t forget to leave room for dessert and coffee, cappuccino, espresso, latte or Cuban café con leche! 5 The Envelope, Please These days, Americans do everything from paying bills to buying groceries online, but when it comes to confidential business communications, maybe we like things the old-fashioned way. An International Communications Research survey commissioned by Pitney Bowes, a mailstream technology company, found that 86% of consumers prefer to receive bills, bank statements and financial reports via mail; only 10% of respondents wanted this information sent over e-mail. They were also less likely to discard unopened mail (31%) – including new product advertisements, catalogs and marketing materials – than unsolicited e-mails (53%). INTERNSHIPS LET YOU TRY BEFORE YOU HIRE It’s impossible to learn everything you want to know from a potential employee’s resume and an interview. That’s why internship programs can be a valuable way for students and employers to get to know each other before making a big commitment. But just how effective are internships as a test run? Avoiding the Commitment Dip Firms use thousands of dollars and work hours to make change initiatives a success – and then the bottom falls out. Or in this case, employee commitment to the change drops off, and all signs point to failure. Richard Lepsinger, a human resources consultant and coauthor of Flexible Leadership: Creating Value by Balancing Multiple Challenges and Choices, provides six tips for keeping employee support high following a change: • Be forthright about the change and its impact. Open and honest communication makes change easier, so keep executives accessible to respond to employee questions and concerns. • Model behaviors that support the change. Lead by example so employees do not see both old and new sets of rules and behaviors, thus diminishing the credibility and importance of the change. • Don’t put your plan on auto pilot. Unanticipated problems and opportunities will undoubtedly arise after the change is in place, so expect to revise objectives and be ready to promptly communicate them to employees. • Set realistic objectives and milestones. Don’t set employees up for failure; as they reach attainable goals, they’re more likely to see the benefits of the change. • Don’t underestimate the resources required. Provide adequate resources for employees to complete both their regular jobs and their new duties associated with the change implementation. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, nearly two out of three respondents offered full-time jobs to their interns. More than 70% of those offers were accepted. • Maintain enthusiasm and excitement. Continuously communicate the benefits to employees for the duration of the initiative (not just at kickoff) and offer a reward system for reaching objectives.
