Marine Captain Honored by Boaters
Fall 2012 The Blue Ridge Chapter Antique and Classic Boat Society, Inc. acbs.com • blueridgechapter.com Marine Captain Honored by Boaters Sunny Weather Brings Out Visitors “Float a Boat for Garrett” was the theme for the 15th annual Charlotte Antique and Classic Boat Show on Lake Norman, September 6-9, 2012. Jennifer Mosher gears crafts toward youthful boaters. All proceeds from advertisements, the silent auction and donations by participants and visitors will be given to Marine Captain Garrett Carnes, who recently returned home to Mooresville, NC. Garrett is recovering from an explosion in Afghanistan which took part of both his legs. His parents and brother attended the show on Saturday and were given a boat ride by Bob Churchill and treated to lunch. The show began on Thursday evening with an “Early Arrivals BBQ” hosted by Pat and Shari Crusse. Friday morning began clear and windy. At noon, members attended the Blue Ridge Chapter’s annual meeting. Friday evening the group was treated to a reception at the home of Judy and Ed Longino. Ed was proud to show off his boathouse, filled with wooden boat and NASCAR memorabilia. The food and fellowship were outstanding! Many thanks to Ed and Judy for their hospitality. Saturday morning was sunny but so windy that the Parade of Boats had to be cancelled, to everyone’s disappointment, During the afternoon, a 1947 Seaplane did a flyover, landing nearby and pulling up to the marina, adding to the enjoyment of our many visitors. Saturday was capped off with a delicious meal in the banquet room of Queen’s Landing. Our hats off to the chef! Recognition of committee members and awards followed. Sunday morning there were 40 participants in the Poker Run. Gerald Hurst’s awardwinning boat. Families Show Zest for Boating Family enjoying ride with Gene McCarthy. The Range Marker This annual event was held at Crooked Creek Marina on beautiful Lake Sinclair. Crooked Creek Marina and The Grill at Crooked Creek are in the second year as our hosts, and not only did they provide the venue but provided the hamburgers and hot dogs. The weather was terrific, and we had eight boats from Blue Ridge Chapter, including Smith Skiff (Alan & Faye Smith), Josie (Bob & Sheila Churchill), Christi (Ron Nowak), and a U-22 brought by the Neffs. Gene McCarthy and Monty Cheshire, new Children ready to ride in “friends” to Bob Churchill’s skiff. the event, brought their Centuries, and they were all kept running. Einstein, the trick-card-reading rabbit, as well as the talents of artist Joel Samuelson, whose thumbprint art project was a huge hit with the kids, graced us this year. The turnout was a little lighter than in years past; however this was attributed to a simultaneous event conflict with the organizations. All in all it was still a terrific day and the boat captains were kept hoppin’. The children and their families from Starlight and the Brain Tumor Foundation had as many rides as they Tom Neff has full load of happy boaters. wanted, and I continue to be amazed at the resiliency and zest for life that so many of them have. It is a pure joy to see the same families year after year, to watch the progression of the children, as many are able to conquer their illnesses. That’s not to say we haven’t experienced some losses, but I believe we are all the better for having these special families in our lives, albeit a tragically short time for some. The simple pleasure in watching a child’s face light up with a smile, and in accepting thanks from Cruising with Monty Cheshire grateful families for sharing our hobby with them, is indescribable. It’s often asked who benefits more, the families or us boaters, and I believe it is mutual. We certainly benefit from spending time with these everyday, ordinary heroes. A continued THANKS to Blue Ridge Chapter for their continued sponsorship. The Boating Bonanza is an important event that is looked forward to every year by the families, and just knowing that, at least for a day, we are able to make a difference is important to all of us. Check us out on the Boating Bonanza Facebook page! Here’s looking forward to the 2013 Boating Bonanza.
