Corporal Works of Mercy:
Clothing the Naked
By Deacon Greg McNabb
It was not common that people had multiple sets of clothing until the Industrial
Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Nakedness was a sign of abject poverty.
While many people had one or two sets
of clothing, a poor person might wear
rags or nothing.
In Scripture, Exodus 22 proscribes that if
you take a cloak as collateral on a loan, it
needs to be given back at night because
the borrower has no other clothing for
warmth at night. In the gospels Jesus
tells us that if someone asks for a shirt,
we are to give them our coat as well
(Matt 5:40); and, if we have two shirts,
we are to give one away (Luke 3:11).
These are not injunctions that bother us
today, for most of us have multiple
shirts, coats, shoes, and pants. So what
does this Work of Mercy mean for us today?
It could mean we need to reduce our
clothing until we are at parity with the
poor. To live as they do. It could mean
that we need to reduce our standard of
living to better provide more resources
for those who have less. (Maybe you
heard the statistic over Christmas that
the United States uses more electricity
powering Christmas lights than El Salvador and Ethiopia use in a year.) Many of
us found an opportunity to live this injunction by buying coats, socks -- even
shoes for the men who spent the night at
our overnight shelter over the Christmas
holidays. Their appreciation of these gifts
was touching.
If clothing the naked is no longer a common opportunity in this day and age,
what would be the equivalent sign of
God’s mercy?

INSTITUTE FOR CATHOLIC THOUGHT AND CULTURE
SEATTLE UNIVERSITY
As people of faith, how are we talking about real-world
issues of ecological destruction? Whose voices do we hear,
do we prioritize? What can we learn from Pope Francis’
call to care for our common home?
Please join the Seattle University community for the winter
segment of our 2015-2016 Catholic Heritage Lectures,
“Care for the Earth, Care for the Poor”:
Integral Ecology: Pope Francis
and Planetary Thinking
February 4th, 7pm in the Pigott Auditorium, Seattle U.
Keynote lecture by Christiana Peppard, PhD, Fordham
University, and a panel discussion with panelists, Wesley
Lauer, PhD, Director of Environmental Science at Seattle
University ,and Christina Roberts, PhD, professor of English and Program Director of Women and Gender Studies
at Seattle University.
Drawing insight from Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si',
speakers will discuss local and international issues of water
accessibility and indigenous rights and will examine the
rhetoric we use to raise awareness and call for action.
