Green is my business
In the last two centuries, mankind’s activities have
mutilated Mother Earth and maimed her resources.
Human civilisation has single-handedly reaped the
unprecedented water, energy and environmental
challenges that plague us today.
The ten warmest years since the mid 1800s
occurred only in the last 15 years while melting
glaciers around the world are predicted to raise
sea levels by up to 88 cm by 2100.
This ‘hot’ news really burned my cheeks. Truth be
told, like many, I used to take the earth upon I
walk for granted and never seriously considered
its well-being 50 years from now.
What will life be like for our children and future
generations? Imagine them not being able to enjoy
the basics we have today such as clean water and
fresh air.
Fortunately, many businesses, local communities
and individuals are now awakened to the
realisation of an ailing Mother Earth.
Here at Keppel, the Group views the protection of
the environment as integral to our continued
pursuit of growth. An Environmental Steering
Committee (ESC) has been set up, aimed at
developing a Group-wide Environment Masterplan
and members of the ESC comprise top
management, no less.
In the Property Division, our developments are
carefully crafted to harmonise with the
environment. More than just houses, they are
homes that enhance the quality of life for
individuals, families and communities in which they
are built.
As a major environmental engineering solutions
provider, our Infrastructure arm has extended its
firm grasp on the green business by investing in
R&D and providing innovative technology solutions
that mitigate a wide spectrum of environmental
issues.
In Offshore & Marine, initiatives are also in place
to ensure work practices are in sync with the
environment, whether in Singapore or overseas.
Day-to-day activities in the yard, such as blasting
works are carried out under controlled conditions
to prevent harm to the environment.
Beyond business, as individuals, we can positively
impact our environment in our daily lives. We may
be our worst enemies, but we too can be part of
the solution. This was the good news I took home,
along with a recyclable bagful of tips on how I too
can be a green champion, from the luncheon talk
hosted by Keppel Land on World Environment Day
(read page 22).
As I listened to the energy-saving tips shared by
the speakers, I was taken aback at how simple the
steps can be – the fundamental guiding principle
to live ‘sustainably’ is to consume only what we
need, and not beyond what cannot be replaced.
What we are committed to and practise at our
workplace can and should be carried on in our
homes. If we are all mindful of these little steps,
together we make energy-saving an easy leap.
Every effort we make contributes to ‘futureproofing’ resources, not just for ourselves but for
generations to come. German novelist Jean Paul
Richter puts it aptly, “Do not wait for extraordinary
circumstances to do good action, try to use
ordinary situations.”
The highest Platinum Green Mark Award from the
Building and Construction Authority for Keppel
Land’s office development, Ocean Financial Centre,
and the ‘Clean Marina’ award to Marina at Keppel
Bay, are testament to our commitment to go green.

Proprietary designs win market
confidence
Keppel Offshore & Marine’s
(Keppel O&M) proprietary
offshore solutions are
gaining foothold in the
global industry.
In June, its offshore arm
Keppel FELS, made headlines
with four repeat rig orders
amounting close to
US$1 billion from the Seadrill
group of companies and
Queiroz Galvão Óleo e Gás
(QGOG). These include two
KFELS B Class jackups, a
DSS 38 semisubmersible
(semi) and an SSDT 3600E
drilling tender.
“With our own suite of
proprietary technology, we
have the flexibility to adapt
our designs to address
technological changes in
terms of drilling processes
and drilling equipment,
among others.
“All our proprietary designs
have been developed with
strong input from our
customers because our
technology innovation must
ultimately create value for
them,” said Mr Choo Chiau
Beng, Chairman and CEO of
Keppel O&M.
Through its proven track
record in rig building,
Keppel O&M has earned the
confidence of customers in
its proprietary designs.
The KFELS B Class design
for instance, was readily
adopted when launched in
2000.
Moreover, as the only
shipyard group to have its
own suite of deepwater
solutions, Keppel O&M is
also enjoying a constant
flow of orders for its
semisubmersibles
as exploration moves into
greater water depths.
QGOG ACQUIRES REPEAT
DSS 38 SEMI
Keppel FELS has secured
a US$385 million repeat
order to build a DSS 38
semisubmersible drilling
rig for Brazilian drilling
contractor group QGOG.
To be named Alpha Star, this
latest rig is a repeat order of
the first semisubmersible,
Gold Star, which was
awarded to Keppel FELS in
August 2006. Gold Star will
support Petrobras’ growth
plans whilst Alpha Star may
be deployed in either
offshore West Africa or
South America, when they
are delivered in the second
halves of 2009 and 2011
respectively.

Besides the two DSS 38

FELS is also constructing
three DSS 21 rigs for Maersk
Contractors and one DSS 51
rig for Transocean. The DSS
series of semisubmersbile
rigs is jointly designed by
Keppel O&M’s Deepwater
Technology Group and
Marine Structures Consultants
of The Netherlands.
KFELS B Class:
The industry’s
power horse
Cost effective and readily
upgradeable to higher
performance capabilities, the
KFELS B Class incorporates
Keppel’s advanced and fullyautomated high capacity
rack and pinion elevating
system, and Self-Positioning
Fixation System. The rigs will
be able to operate in water
depths of up to 400 feet, drill
down to 30,000 feet and
accommodate 112 men.
Since the design’s launch in
2000, Keppel FELS has
secured 33 orders for such
units including the two latest
Seadrill jackups.
SEADRILL GROUP
ORDERS THREE MORE
RIGS
Keppel FELS has secured a
US$420 million contract to
build two KFELS B Class
jackup drilling rigs for Oslo
Stock
Exchange-listed
Seadrill Limited.

four KFELS B Class jackup
rigs, which are presently
operating at full capacity.
We are pleased to partner
Keppel FELS again for the
construction of our latest
newbuild KFELS B Class
jackups.”
The two jackups are
scheduled for delivery in the
second and fourth quarters
of 2010.
Meanwhile, Seadrill Asia, a
subsidiary of Seadrill Limited,
has placed a repeat order for
a semisubmersible drilling
tender at US$160 million.
Designed by the Deepwater
Technology Group, this
KFELS SSDT 3600E tender
drilling rig will be delivered
in the first quarter of 2011.
Keppel O&M has been
working closely with Seadrill
Asia, formerly Smedvig,
to construct their highly
specialised fleet of drilling
tenders since 1994.
When completed, the latest
unit will join Seadrill Asia’s
fleet of six other KFELS SSDT
rigs, built by the Keppel O&M
group. Keppel FELS is
presently constructing the
sixth drilling tender of this
fleet, West Berani II, for
delivery at end 2009. keppelite

Conventionally, drilling
tenders
are
only
deployable next to fixed
platforms. The KFELS SSDT
series has been enhanced
to
provide
drilling
contractors and operators
the flexibility to operate in
deepwaters alongside
Spars and Tension Leg
Platforms.
A typical SSDT carries a
Drilling Equipment Set
(DES) and has high
capacity cranes of up to
200 tonnes to deploy this
DES onto the platforms
within 12 hours. The latest
tender rig for Seadrill Asia
will also have further
enhanced
mooring
capabilities to suit the
demanding requirements
of offshore South East
Asia. It will also feature a
crane capacity of 250
tonnes, four mud pumps
and accommodation for
160 people.

ENSCO to build US$537m
deepwater rig with Keppel
Keppel FELS has won a
contract to build a
US$537 million ultradeepwater semisubmersible
(semi) drilling rig from
a subsidiary of ENSCO
International Incorporated
(ENSCO).
This contract follows shortly
after the award of the fifth
semi, ENSCO 8504, that was
announced in May 2008.
This latest rig, ENSCO 8505,
is the sixth consecutive
semi of the ENSCO 8500
Series ® that Keppel FELS
is constructing, and is
scheduled for delivery in the
first half of 2012.

has become a very important

estimate that our deepwater
fleet, including the 8500
Series® semis, will contribute
approximately 30% of our
total revenue when in

protection JV with Tianjin companies

Engineering (KIE), a whollyowned subsidiary of Keppel
Corporation Limited, has
signed an agreement to
form a joint venture
company, Tianjin Eco-City
Environmental Protection
Co., Ltd. (TECEP) with Tianjin
TEDA Co., Ltd. (Tianjin TEDA
Co.) and Tianjin Eco-City
Investment & Development
Co., Ltd.(TECID Co.).
The joint venture company,
TECEP, will be 55% held by
Tianjin TEDA Co., 25% held
by TECID Co. and 20% held
by KIE. The joint venture
company’s registered capital
of RMB 100 million will be
contributed by the parties in
cash in proportion to their
shareholdings upon approval
by the authorities.
TECEP will focus on the
investment, construction and
operation of infrastructure
for environmental protection,
and is expected to provide
urban environmental
management, pollution
treatment and environmental
restoration and improvement
in the Sino-Singapore Tianjin
Eco-City (SSTEC). TECEP
will also develop and
provide solutions for green
energy and environmental
protection.

attach to a prelaid mooring
system. Capable of operating
at water depths of 3,000 m
and drilling down to 10,000
m, this series of semis are
well suited for the conditions
of offshore Brazil, West
Africa, Gulf of Mexico and
Southeast Asia. Designed
for maximum uptime with
reduced emissions and
discharges, the DSS 21 series
is an environmentally friendly
solution for the offshore
industry.
To date, Maersk Contractors
has invested S$3 billion
worth of projects with
Keppel O&M. Keppel FELS
has also been assigned the
construction of four jackup
rigs for Maersk, the first of
which, Maersk Resilient, was
delivered in January 2008.

On track to deliver FPSO bound
for offshore Thailand
Keppel Shipyard Ltd (Keppel
Shipyard) is on track to
deliver FPSO (Floating
Production, Storage and
Offloading) Lewek Arunothai
to EOC Limited (EOC) for a
South East Asian client.
The 725,000 bbls storage
FPSO was named at a
ceremony on 21 June 2008
at Keppel Shipyard. FPSO
Lewek Arunothai is the first
FPSO that Keppel Shipyard
has converted for EOC.
Keppel Shipyard has
previously, in 1997, carried
out life extension and
upgrading of an FSO for the
Erawan field in Thailand. In
2004, it also converted a

The first part of the vessel’s
refurbishment and life
extension was carried out
at Subic Shipyard in the
Philippines, while the
engineering, procurement
and topside fabrication were
in progress in Singapore. The
vessel then sailed to Keppel
Shipyard to complete the
remaining conversion and
integration of topside works.

Innovating water reuse in Qatar
Keppel Seghers Engineering
Singapore Pte Ltd (KSES) has
applied POTABLOC TM , its
mobile water treatment and
production unit, to produce
high quality industrial
grade water as part of the
construction of the Doha
North Sewage Treatment
Works (DNSTW).
POTABLOCTM is an innovative
self-sustaining and mobile
water production unit
that produces high quality
water from unconventional
sources including seawater
or brackish water, through
technologically advanced
separation techniques such
as ultrafiltration and reverse
osmosis.
Instead of drawing valuable
potable water from the city
of Doha, POTABLOCTM will
recycle wastewater to
provide the main source of
water needed for the project
construction. The Keppel
Seghers’ POTABLOCTM will
produce up to 600m3/day of
recycled water from the
tertiary treated effluent from
the Al Thakira sewage
treatment plant.

Daily life in West Bengal
came to a halt as political
parties announced a 12hour (6am to 6pm)
statewide bandh (derived
from Hindi meaning
‘closed’ used to describe
political protests and
strikes) on 5 and 6 June
2008 due to protests
stemming from fuel price
hikes.
Such was the news that
greeted us upon arrival in
Kolkata on the eve of the
bandh. We were advised
that attempts to drive out
were highly discouraged
for fear of angry mobs.
“Hotel arrest” was the
only option.
Being true blue Keppelites,
our can-do! spirits kicked
into gear and we promptly,
re-arranged three days
worth of meetings into
three quarters of our last
day in Kolkata.
Through updates from the
local news channels,
Internet and newspapers,
we learnt that several parts
of Kolkata were ghost
towns
with
traffic
movement coming to a
standstill. It was a
paradoxically surreal
experience to be stranded
in a hotel with waitstaff attending to guests’
demands promptly, while
many others were stranded
at train stations and
airports. Reports streamed in
about overflowing toilets at
the airport, clogged drains
and and a semi-flooded
departure lounge.
However, in the midst of such
dismal news, I was greeted
with a wedding procession
entering the hotel compound.
Their gaiety and brightly lit
procession struck in me
the realisation of human
resilience in the face of
adversity.
The ironic sequence of events
has given me reason to like
India – its indomitable spirit
lives through its people who
thrive astoundingly amid the
vast plurality in ethnicities,
customs and traditions
alongside rapid socioeconomic development
mounting at breakneck
speed.
Implicit in the protest for a
better life or the celebration
of a new shared life, India’s
people are showing without
a doubt that they seek a
better tomorrow. With such
aspirations embraced by its
people and economy, there
is little shadow cast on the
country’s potential in the
near future.

The Ham Rong prospect
is located in Block 106,
Song Hong basin, offshore

75 km south of Hai Phong

Drilling is expected to take
approximately 57 days to

Enforcing safety – all in a day’s work
Judging from his amicable
nature and cheerful
disposition, Mr Nawawi
bin Asmawi could easily
pass off as a regular guy
working a desk-bound
job. But a typical day for
him is far from mundane.
Nawawi is the Health,
Safety and Environment
(HSE) Manager heading
the Enforcement Branch
at Keppel Shipyard. The
Enforcement Branch is
part of the yard’s HSE
Department.
A typical day for him
begins at seven in the
morning and often
stretches into the evenings.
During this period, Nawawi
and his colleagues are
constantly kept on their toes,
always on hand to advise
yard personnel about their
appropriate
personal
protective equipment (PPE)
and work practices as well
as ensuring that safety
standards are maintained.
Each day, Nawawi and his
two other HSE colleagues
plan in advance, their
inspection strategies and
focus on specific locations
where reports have been
filed on lapses in safety
procedures. The severity of
these lapses differs day to
day. Examples include
inadequate PPE and failure
to adhere to proper
housekeeping and work
procedures.
Covering such a large area to
upkeep safety is not the
greatest challenge. Even
more daunting is trying to
cross the socio-cultural divide
to explain to the 14,000 yard
workers
of
multiple
nationalities, languages and
educational backgrounds
why safety is important.
“The job can be unrewarding
at times as we are often seen
as the ‘bad guys’ in the yards
who are there only to look
for problems with the
workers,” said Nawawi.
Fortunately,
the
Enforcement Team is
supported by other Zone
Housekeeping Teams,
HSE
Officers
as
well as members of the
Workforce Safety Council
and
Subcontractor
HSE Watchgroup. Even
customers help to keep
a lookout for safety
delinquents and provide
suggestions to improve
safety standards in the
yard.
Passion for their work
fuels Nawawi and the
HSE teams in Keppel to
change the minds and
hearts of individuals
that collective safety is
imperative. They have
taken it upon themselves
to drive this through by a
“lead by example”
approach.

Supervisor with Keppel
Shipyard and is responsible
for repairing and overhauling
ship motors.
Hafiz does not consider
himself a naturally hands-on
person. “However, thanks to
practical training in the
workshops and constant
hands-on training on the job,
I’ve managed to overcome
this obstacle,” he said.

Penultimate race off from
Nova Scotia
The penultimate race of
the Clipper 07-08 Round
the World Yacht Race is
underway with the fleet of
ten international yachts off
on their final ocean crossing
from Nova Scotia, on 16 June
2008. The 2080-mile race
will take them across the
North Atlantic to Cork,
Ireland.
It was an anxious start to the
morning as the crews woke
to a light breeze but, as the
morning progressed, the
wind filled in and by the time
the yachts slipped their
moorings at the Sydney
Marine Terminal at midday it
had strengthened to ten
knots to allow a spectacular
start in beautiful conditions
in the harbour.
For some of the crew who
joined the team for the last
leg in Jamaica, this will be
their first ocean crossing.

After surviving her time onboard Uniquely Singapore in leg four of the
Clipper 07-08 Race in February 2008, Diana Chan from Keppel Group Corporate
Communications went on to attempt her first marathon in Singapore’s inaugural
night run, addicted to the adrenaline of pushing boundaries. Keppelite shares
her post-race thoughts.
Many have said that building
a long-term career is akin to
running a 42 km marathon.
Indeed, one of the first things
I learnt when training for the
race was that there are no
shortcuts in life.
Ultimately, I would never
have known that I could push
the limits of my mind and
body if I had not first
ventured out of my comfort
zone to sign up for my first
marathon. In work and life,
I believe the same applies.
I surprised myself with an
achievement by letting
passion preside over fear
and take me into new
experiential arenas and
onto to higher planes of
accomplishments.
As the saying goes, the
journey of a thousand miles
begins with a single step and
to get better at one’s job or
race condition, the only way
is to start practising.
I n c re a s e d c o m p e t e n c e
with active training and
taking charge of one’s
own development fuel
confidence which in turn
feed the drive to improve
performance. With
consistent efforts, the cyclical
end result is a powerful selfmotivator to do and feel
better at one’s job.
While fatigue and falters
abound along the long road
of learning, cracking your
hard-earned veneer of selfbelief once in a while, friends
and mentors will keep you
centred and on-track to
growth.
Braving the last frontier in
the midst of a mixed stream
of haggard walkers and
admirable old-timers still
pushing forward at steady
strides, I realised that with
self discipline, I am my
own best pace-setter. I
compete against personal
benchmarks.
Stretching limits for the long run
Trudging along the sandy
Bedok Reservoir at 4am and
cursing under my breath,
what kept me going was
realising that one always has
to start with the end in mind.
Focusing on the long-term
goal and visualising the
sweet fruits of one’s labour
at the end of the road helped
me pull through the shortterm and immediate pain.
Giving up halfway was
never an option. Indulgent
imaginations of a gassy gulp
of ice-cold Coca Cola at the
finish were certainly a
personal force-multiplier.
At the end of six hours and
37 minutes that seemed like
a lifetime and drenched from
the morning rain, I was high
on achievement. I had
overcome another challenge,
but I know the journey ahead
will be full of more surprises

(iSBUG) will open with a golf
tournament on 4 July 2008.
Adding an artistic dimension

Competition, which has
given artistic Keppelites the
opportunity to chalk up
creativity points for their
teams.
The shortlisted flags of
the four teams Atlantic,
Caribbean, Caspian and
Pacific will be unveiled at
the opening ceremony.

The name futsal can be
derived from futebol de salão
in Portugese or fútbol sala/
de salon in Spanish, which
are translated as ‘indoor
soccer’. The game is played
with a smaller ball with less
bounce than a football with
emphasis on improvisation,
creativity and technique.
Brazil remains the hub of
the world for the sport but
futsal fever has spread
globally and is fast gaining
popularity in Asia as well. It
is interesting to learn that
international soccer stars
such as Ronaldinho, Ronaldo
and Rivaldo began their
formative years building their
skills through futsal.
Traditionally, the soccer
event was the only sport in
the iSBUG that did not
include female participation.
With the winds of change
in motion, the introduction
of futsal this year will
allow female Keppelites to
participate in all events and
kick up a storm of fun and
competition.

has always been a favourite

but we believe that the

Residents of Acacia Lodge
have pitched in to make
the local community a
safe and secure living
neighbourhood under the
‘Acacia Foreign Residents
on Patrol’ (AFROP)
initiative.
For their efforts, Acacia
Lodge has been awarded
the Southwest District
Community Safety &
Security
Programme
(CSSP) silver award for its
community contributions.
Mr Steven Lee, GM of
Acacia Lodge said, “We
are heartened to receive
this award on behalf of all
the residents in this
community. It is a
recognition of the efforts
we have put in to ensure
that the estate is safe,
secure and friendly.”
The AFROP initiative
involves active participation
from residents from Acacia
Lodge, Citizens-on-Patrol
members from Bukit Batok
East Spring View Resident
Committee, volunteer
residents as well as Bukit
Batok Neighhourhood
Police Centre Police Liaison
Officers.
Together, they conduct
patrols around the Spring
View estate on weekends
every fortnightly. The
positive response to the
patrol has seen an increase
in the number of residents

Mr Goh Chye Boon has been
appointed as CEO of the SSTEC
joint venture company between
the Singapore and Chinese
consortiums.
Currently, Mr Goh Chye Boon
serves as the Deputy Secretary
(Industry) in the Ministry of Trade
and Industry (MTI). His extensive
public sector experience covers
many areas including economic
development, fiscal planning,
policy planning, and community
development.
Besides MTI, he has held
leadership
appointments
in Ministry of Finance, Monetary
Authority of Singapore, Ministry
of Community Development,
Youth and Sports, People’s
Association and MINDEF.
Mr Goh will be seconded from
the Civil Service with effect from
1 June 2008, and will serve as

able to share more benefits
with members.
More than a thousand KCU members show support at this year’s AGM
Keppel Credit Union (KCU)
held its 29th Annual General
Meeting (AGM) at the Rock
Auditorium, Suntec City Mall
on 28 May 2008. A total of
1,237 members attended the
meeting.
In his opening address,
Chairman of KCU, Professor
Bernard Tan highlighted the
achievements for the year
2007. Membership, he said,
increased by 20% to 12,092
members while savings
increased by 6.5% to $14.8m.
Group Term Life insurance
coverage had been increased
at no cost to members.
In addition, earlier this
year, KCU introduced
eye healthcare check at
subsidised rates for members
and discounted price for
immediate family members.
Book Prize awards are given
out to member’s children
annually.
KCU’s good performance
meant that they could give
a one-time cash payout
totalling $93,000 credited to
the member’s savings
account in June 2008. The
amount credited would
range from $5 to $20
depending on the length of
membership.

Salsa sizzle
If you see Keppelites grooving
at their workstations, they are
probably practising their hot
salsa moves acquired at the
inaugural salsa classes
initiated by the Keppel
Scholars Alumni Association
(KSAA).
The inspiration to start a
dance class was mooted
by KSAA committee member
Liang Qiyang, who discovered
that there had never been
dance classes organised for
the Keppel Group.
Qiyang shared, “I always felt
that dancing is a good social
activity that provides a good
informal and relaxing
opportunity for employees to
interact with each other.”
Learning from Mr Felix
Lau from the established
dance school John &
Josephine Dance Creative,
participants are provided
a solid foundation in the
basics of salsa dancing and
can choose to move on
to the more advanced
levels. Response has been
tremendous with classes
filled to capacity.

Ms Lee Yin Chiin was
persuaded by her husband
to sign them up for
lessons. Enjoying the dance
tremendously, she now looks
forward to her weekly
classes.
Yin Chiin shared, “Salsa
dancing is a great way to
exercise while having fun. I
also get to meet fellow
Keppelites from other
departments which helps to
widen my social circle. I hope
to make salsa a long-term
hobby for my husband and
myself.”

Keeping A.G.I.L.E. in India
“India’s ethnic plurality offers
interesting and diverse
cultural references in
business communication and
interaction. You have to be
discerning and culturally
sensitive to communicate
effectively in the local
context,” shared Mr Lionel
Tay, Keppel Land’s Acting City
Head for Kolkata, and City
Head for Hyderabad.
Lionel’s candid observation of
working in India stems from
experience accumulated
from having been based in
Delhi for almost four years in
his previous job.
Now, Lionel’s work sees him
fly to Kolkata at least twice a
month on 10-day long trips
and make adhoc visits to
Hyderabad for now.
“My family understands the
needs behind my current
travel and work arrangement
and are very supportive,”
Lionel shares, adding that he
maintains close contact via
video-conference with his
wife and children, two girls,
aged ten and eight and a 22month old boy.
A typical day at work in
Kolkata involves ensuring
first and foremost that the
sales office is presentable
for business and that sales
staff are motivated to
Lionel’s self motivation

and rolled out marketing
tactics.

Unity in crisis
In the face of the natural
disasters in Sichuan, China
and Myanmar, Keppel Land’s
staff and employees on the
ground responded quickly to
provide support and aid to
relief efforts while ensuring
the safety and continuity of
business operations.
HANDS UP FOR CHINA
In Chengdu, Peter Lee, City
Head of Keppel Land, was at
work with four other
colleagues when he felt the
first tremors in his office
located on the 22nd floor of
First City Plaza.
Over at The Waterfront,
Keppel Land’s completed
1,143-unit condominium
project, twenty staff
members were evacuated
almost simultaneously.
In the immediate aftermath
of the earthquake on 12 May
2008 that devastated parts
of the Sichuan province and
other areas across China,
Peter and his staff worked
closely to ensure employee
and resident safety, and
minimal work disruption
amidst after-shocks.
The team braved obstacles
resulting from disrupted
mobile telecommunications
and internet connection,
along with shortage of
daily commodities. Close
monitoring of structural
integrity and periodic
updates to the Singapore
headquarters became
standard procedures strictly
adhered to everyday.
With safety as the utmost
priority, on-site rectifications
to reinforce safety were
promptly carried out at
The Waterfront. Third-party
qualified professionals were
also engaged to conduct
thorough building inspection
and consultancy at the fullyoccupied
residential
development.
For the team, waiting was
not an option. Peter called
for a meeting with his
department heads to map
out precautions required
to avoid compromising
employee safety. As a result,
the main office operations
were relocated temporarily

through Myanmar on 2 May
2008.
Surviving the night safely till
daybreak was a huge relief
for Saman, but that was
only the beginning. He drove
a rapid series of crisis
management meetings and
staff briefings immediately
after as the hotel swiftly
garnered resources to equip
its staff to adequately deal
with the aftermath.
By the tenth day, most
telecommunication and
internet connections were
restored and key office
operations fully resumed.
An evacuation drill-cum-roll
call was also conducted. In
his staff address, Peter said,
“Keppel Land believes in
safety first for all. We take
care of our employees and
their loved ones in times of
adversity.
“Every citizen has a role in
a crisis – our role as
employees of Keppel Land
is to contribute to the
company and continue to
help with Chengdu’s

Shortly before that, Sedona
Hotel Yangon was chosen
as the official hotel to host
an international pledging
conference, co-organised by
the Association of Southeast
Asian Nations (ASEAN) and
the United Nations (UN), that
sought further international

f o r Myanmar’s cyclone aid
relief and rehabilitation
efforts.
The Conference was
attended by delegates from
52 UN and ASEAN member

from 24 UN agencies,

While most of us were still
snug in bed and enjoying the
Sunday sleep-in, over 200
people gathered at the
Bedok Reservoir Park on
8 June 2008 well before
dawn for a 4.3-km run in
aid of the Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals (SPCA) and their
furry friends.
In support of the SPCA Fun
Run 2008, Keppel Offshore
& Marine (Keppel O&M)
sponsored the production
of some 700 tee-shirts for
the event. In addition, the
Keppelite Recreation Club
(KRC) put together a team of
10 Keppelites to participate
in the run.
Three of them clinched the
Grand, 1st and 2nd prizes in
the Men’s Open category.

their way into the fifth,
seventh, eighth and eleventh

Strike or no strike, howls of
delight ensued from students
from the Association for
Persons with Special Needs
(APSN), as spirits ran
high during a bowling
competition organised by the
Keppel Volunteers.
Held at Jurong Superbowl on
14 June 2008, the event was
organised to provide the 37
students with a fun-filled
holiday activity and instil in
them the importance of a
healthy lifestyle.

and volunteers eventually
settled into the groove and
starting smashing pins with
every throw. Laughter at the
earlier futile shots led to
encouraging cheers and

a close, only a sumptuous tea
reception could get them to
leave their bowling balls on
the rack and take a well
deserved rest.
The scores were tallied and
anticipation coursed through
the students as they
eagerly awaited the prize
presentation. Trophies were
awarded to students who
racked up the top three
individual scores.
The others did not leave
empty-handed too as they
left with smiles, good
memories
and
new
friendships.
For those who were new to
the game, they had picked
up a new sport, and for the
more seasoned players, they
had given their best shot at

At the start, volunteers went
through the rules of the
game and emphasised the
values of sportsmanship
with the students. They
were encouraged to cheer
for one another during the
competition, regardless of
how they performed.
When it was time for the
eager beavers to shed their
shoes for bowling soles
and pit their skills against
fellow schoolmates, Keppel
Volunteers worked in pairs to
provide guidance and
coaching.

their skills while others

New site in Shenyang for
integrated township development
Keppel Land has acquired
another 154 mu (about
10 ha) site in Shenyang’s
Shenbei New District
at RMB155 million
(S$30.7 million).
Keppel Land plans to
meet this growing
demand through our
offering of well-designed
large-scale integrated
township developments.”
The new site is adjacent to
the first site which is 353 mu
(about 24 ha) and was
acquired in August 2007.
The integrated township
development is situated in
the western part of the
270 sq km Puhe New Town,
the core area in the Shenbei
New District. It is near
the University Town which
currently houses 12
universities and colleges,
w i t h m o re c a m p u s e s
expected over the next few
years.
The combined site area
will measure 507 mu (about
34 ha) and will house
an integrated township
development with a mix of
mid- and high-rise apartment
blocks housing two- and
three-bedroom units with
sizes ranging from 90 to
130 square metres.
Shenyang, the capital city of
Liaoning Province, is an
important industrial and
transportation centre in
northeast China. It is
strategically located within
the Bohai Economic Rim
which is earmarked to be the
major growth area in China.
