While Howard Stern’s radio future remains a mystery, his Sirius XM wingman is proceeding with ambitious internet radio plans. Bubba The Love Sponge mentioned on his show last week that he hasn’t heard from the satcaster regarding his contract, which like Stern’s, expires at the end of next month. The Tampa-based host, who Stern brought to satellite radio in 2005, will make his radio shows available on radioIO.com, beginning January 11, according to comments he has made on his show and via his Twitter account. Bubba’s terrestrial radio morning show — which airs in six markets on stations owned by Cox Media Group and Beasley Broadcasting (he lost his Miami affiliate last week) — will be simulcast live on radioIO.com, followed by a separate uncensored show from 10:30am-12:30 pm eastern. His agent, Tom Bean, owns the webcaster. Sirius XM currently reairs his terrestrial morning show on Howard 101 the same day from 3-7 pm. Bubba also hosts a satellite-only, uncensored show Fridays from 10am-2pm. Bubba’s internet radio plans also include one-off shows featuring co-hosts Manson, Brent, Ned and Spice; “Behind the BRN (Bubba Radio Network),” a Superfan Roundtable show and a twohour program hosted by his buddy Hulk Hogan. Stern has made the Superfan Roundtable concept a long-running, weekly staple on his Howard 101 channel. Currently on a Thanksgiving week vacation, Stern is scheduled to broadcast his last live show under his current contract December 17. Negotiations appear to be coming down to the wire. On the company’s third quarter earnings call earlier this month, Sirius XM CEO Mel Karmazin said “discussions continue” with its highest-paid talent. Holiday format flips on pace with last year. The holidays may seem to come earlier each Christmas but 2010, so far, sounds a lot like one year ago on the radio. Heading into the long holiday weekend, there are about 175 all-Christmas stations, nearly identical to the 2009 pre-Thanksgiving tally. Five years ago fewer than 100 stations were in holiday mode before Thanksgiving. However, an Inside Radio analysis of the trend shows the pace accelerated in recent years. In 2007 there were about 100, while in 2008 it jumped to nearly 150, according to Inside Radio research director Cathy Devine. The Christmas format has given many stations a ratings bounce, particularly those that are first to capture the position in the market — a factor in the move to go to the all-Yuletide position earlier. PPM has shown properly executed Christmas programming can double a station’s 25-54 AQH share, especially those that “own” the position news INSIDE >> in their market. The holiday format has also become a big revenue producer for some stations that are able to tap into ad buyers’ desire to be associated with shopping and gift giving. >> Citadel serves lawsuit not turkey Will radio set a new Christmas-format record this year? Nearly 175 stations are in holidaymode and the number keeps growing. Last year the Inside Radio database showed a record 484 stations went to an all-holiday music position — a 12% jump over the 431 in 2008 and 2006. In 2007 there were 427, compared to 302 in 2005 and 279 in 2004, according to the Inside Radio database. See the latest list of all-Christmas stations HERE. Digital spending on traditional media forecast to rise 28%. While traditional ad revenue for radio, TV, print and out-of-home is expected to grow just 1.8% next year, digital spending on these legacy media will soar 28%, according to preliminary data from Jack Myers Media Business Report. Myers says that will spur total 3.6% total growth in traditional media categories. The report tracks 57 media and marketing categories, including online-originated display advertising, video advertising, mobile, satellite/internet radio and social media, along with traditional channels. “Marketers are integrating their budget allocations to reflect the increasing cross-over between their marketing and sales functions, which have historically been separated,” Myers says in a blog post. “This trend is especially apparent in social media, which is growing 50% to $1.2 billion in 2010.” Winner’s Circle: KZON rising steadily in tight Phoenix CHR contest. Of the growing number of CHR battles, Phoenix is home to one of the closest races in the nation. With a legacy that dates back to the mid-‘80s, Clear Channel’s “104.7 Kiss-FM” KZZP has almost always been on top in total audience and remains in front of CBS Radio’s “101.5 Jamz” KZON, both in persons 18-34 and women 18-34. But beginning in June, Jamz has edged out KZZP in 6+ and, in October, it lead the entire market in cume for the first time. Jamz also set a station-high 5.2 share 6+ in October, good for second place, and has been rising steadily in 18-34. The upswing has occurred despite any consistent presence in the program director’s office during the past two years. For a year and a half, the station’s PD was based in Sacramento and made monthly treks to Phoenix. Bruce St. James took over in January but stayed just three months, before pursuing a fulltime talk show at crosstown KTAR-FM. Rick Gillette, who came on the scene in August, is working to focus the 41-month old station more keenly on the unique Phoenix market. “We’ve tried to create a destination for the station in the last 90+ days, so that people won’t drive through, they actually might come in and have a cup of coffee,” says Gillette, who previously programmed “Kiss 103.5” WKSC, Chicago. That’s encompassed a Make The Switch campaign, a new morning show and an effort to better involve listeners on air. A live and local airstaff differentiates Jamz from KZZP, which uses voicetracked talent in afternoons and nights. “Having live bodies in the studio 20 hours a day gives me an advantage,” Gillette says. In a market where a multicultural audience has long been the norm, no English language FM has a higher percentage of Hispanic listeners than Jamz — 52%, per Arbitron. “We’re more interested in creating an entertainment experience for the lifestyle, for people who have similar tastes, and not so much targeting based on demographics and ethnicity,” Gillette says. “We try to get a vibe for what the city is all about.” Sometimes it takes “Paternity Test Tuesday” to cut through the clutter. When Rick Gillette arrived as KZON, Phoenix PD August 5, he began a concerted effort to get the jocks to talk more about the audience and less about the station. An “End Of Summer Jam” was the station’s top promotional priority and, rather than pushing listeners to buy tickets, Gillette (pictured) had the jocks ask listeners on-air what they were planning to wear to the concert. “Begging them to come wasn’t working but getting them to go shopping did,” he says. “It’s the difference between fitting into their lives as opposed to getting into their lives.” Perhaps the most blatant example of weaving the audience into the brand is its Make The Switch campaign, a common contest/branding exercise used at recent CBS Radio CHR converts. A top 40 throwback updated for PPM measurement, the station gives away $101 to the correct number caller at three pre-promoted times a day, Monday-Thursday, and twice on Friday. “In their own words, they explain where they came from and what they found unique, or more appropriate to them about 101.5,” Gillette says. “We don’t have to talk about our strengths and [the competition’s] weaknesses, the audience tells our story for us.” Gillette says it’s been an effective appointment listening tactic. The number of meters tuned to KZON has spiked from an average just north of six to as many as 30 when the station airs the contest, he says. Another example is “Paternity Test Tuesday,” swiped from the Maury Povich playbook. A reality TV meets radio feature, morning host Lady La interviews a couple in the studio (accompanied by the child in question) before the paternity test takes place. Integrating the web with on-air content has caused KZON’s web traffic to increase 40% during the past six weeks, according to Gillette. After posting a YouTube video from a pregnant bikini contest, the station stirred the pot by airing a possibly staged call from an irate male who found the MORE NEWS >> INSIDERADIO.COM PAGE 2 NEWS Wednesday, November 24, 2010 video “nasty” and “disrespectful to women.” That prompted a flurry of female callers who disagreed. “I believe in having the audience fully participate,” Gillette says. “When seven stations are playing Bruno Mars, what we do to make listeners feel they’re part of this brand is essential.” Sirius XM begins accepting applications for 12-channel set-aside. After the FCC took more than two years to determine how to parcel out 4% of the satcaster’s channels to outside parties to satisfy one of its merger requirements, the process has been put on a fast track. Proposals are due at Sirius XM by January 7, 2011. The company must inform the FCC of its tentative selections by March 2 and lease agreements are due April 17. The satcaster has launched a web site where qualified entities can apply to lease channel space per terms of an FCC directive. In deciding how to divvy up as many as one dozen channels, Sirius XM says it will look for programming representing diverse viewpoints and/or diverse entertainment content, improved service to historically underserved audiences, original content of a type not available to subscribers and new entrants to mass media. Applicants are expected to demonstrate they have the financial, operational and technical wherewithal to program the spectrum. The Commission earlier said that it may allow up to half of the channels to go to existing terrestrial radio operators but that no provider can be connected with Sirius XM or already provide it with programming. Citadel sues Renda over “Bob” trademark in Oklahoma. A complaint filed in federal court in Oklahoma City by Citadel Broadcasting accuses Renda of infringing on Citadel’s ownership of the “Bob,” Bob FM” and “Turn your knob to Bob” trademarks for radio stations in the state of Oklahoma. Renda flipped KBEZ, Tulsa to “92.9 Bob-FM” June 10 while Citadel claims its KQOB, Oklahoma City has been known as “96.9 Bob-FM” since November 2003. While they serve different markets, the two signals overlap east of Oklahoma City. In a July 21 letter, Citadel informed Renda it would take legal action if Renda hadn’t complied with its demands by August 4. Citadel’s lawsuit seeks legal fees, damages and an end to the alleged infringement based on four counts: federal unfair competition, infringement of state registration, violation of common law trademark infringement and violation of state deceptive trade practices. The suit, which seeks a jury trial, contends that Renda’s actions have caused Citadel “to suffer irreparable injury” and have resulted in “unjust enrichment” to Renda. Inside Radio News Ticker....Citadel cuts Scott Shannon from middays in Atlanta...Following disappointing ratings, Citadel replaces New York-based Scott Shannon in middays on “True Oldies 106.7” WYAY, Atlanta with a local host. Ratings for Shannon and his True Oldies format have been sliding over the past six months. WYAY managed a 2.1 in 25-54 in October. “We want to be live and local,” GM Paul O’Malley tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It gives us a competitive advantage”... Journal reconfigures WTMJ lineup...With four months of PPM data available, Journal news/talk WTMJ, Milwaukee (620) is making some lineup changes. Morning co-host John Jagler and afternoon driver Jonathan Green are exiting, according to OnMilwaukee.com. The station has improved its 25-54 ratings over recent diary levels to rank third, while remaining solidly on top in 6+...Potential mayoral candidate leaves Memphis morning gig...“Kix 106” WGKX morning co-host Brian Elder has been released by the Citadel country station as he considers a run for mayor of nearby Arlington, TN next September. The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports that Elder’s potential candidacy was part of the reason for a breakdown in contract negotiations with the station. Morning drive staples for 15 years, Elder and his partners host one of the city’s top rated morning shows. “Whether or not this is permanent, I don’t know,” Elder tells the paper. “After the election, I may have another shot at this.”...Savage to pen a pair of thrillers...The book-writing side career of syndicated talker Michael Savage is making a sharp turn away from nonfiction. The conservative host has signed a two-book deal with St. Martin’s Press to write a pair of thrillers, according to the New York Times. The first will be published next summer.
