David Upp, Great Plains Conference Missionary April 1, 2015 MISSION LINK > My Twenty-Eight (& Counting) Ministry Sites in Kansas Although I had originally planned to be teaching Bible in Quito, Ecuador, this last month, another drop in student numbers this Spring resulted in my staying in Kansas: busy with Missions Preaching & Itineration journeys to Geneseo UMC, Roxbury UMC, & First UMC, Newton, Kansas. No openings for April, but I've already received 1 request to Share P = served as a UM Pastor T = Taught College Class in Bible M = Mission Intineration/Sermon on Missions in May 2015: revupp@hotmail.com / 620-662-3687 4 1 David Upp, Great Plains Conference Missionary April 1, 2015 April will whisk me away from Springtime in Kansas to Summer in Davao, Mindanao, The Philippines. Again, I will join Caleb and Gladys (with baby Roshan) Byerly to Share The Gospel with the Tigwahanon and Umajamnon Manobo Tribes on the great Southern Philippines Island of Mindanao. We will be in Bukidnon Province & down around the island's largest city: Davao. This wider Mission will include Evangelism & Bible Study, practical workshops like Motorcycle Maintenance, EthnoArts Teams, a Conference on Lumad Evangelism [hosted by Island Breeze Davao/YWAM], and visits to other villages of UN-reached peoples... & I hope to also be able to visit with Davao's UM Bishop. On the way to Mindanao, I will spend part of Holy Week in Hong Kong (breaking up the long flight, my second time in Red China), and part in Manila [but not at their contemporary Crucifixions]. Manila was originally governed by Spanish Conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi as a part of the Territory of Mexico (then labeled as "New Spain"); next, Luzon became a "New Kingdom of Castille". 2 David Upp, Great Plains Conference Missionary April 1, 2015 One of my clearest Palm Sunday Memories came as a guest preacher in Liberia in 1979, in a tiny village outside of Gbarnga, Bong County. My Kpelle translator, a students at Gbarnga School of Theology, told a young boy to go & "Cut some Brooms!" Puzzled, the boy nevertheless did what he asked to do, & returned to the church building holding several palm-branches tinier than the ones held by the people in this painting. We all then began to parade around the village and church waving our "Brooms" to recall Jesus' Triumphal Entry on that original "Broom Sunday"! Mission Link 2012 readers may remember Palm Sunday is the Primary day for Mizo Missionaries to share their faith in public: Rising EARLY to wave Palms & celebrate King Jesus. In some parts of India, Palm Sunday is better known than Easter Sunday (perhaps celebrated only inside churches)! In 2001, my daughter & I brought a full-size palm branch (15 feet long) up from Houston to my UMC's in Trousdale, Belpre, & Macksville, Kansas. Lent & Holy Week are times of growth world-wide (even where they come as weather is getting colder, the days shorter, flowers fading & withering)! March Trivia Question: Which new national President is a Marxist Terrorist & a convicted Felon? Answer: President José Mujica of Uruguay (an old Tupamaro extremist). April Trivia Question: What legal restriction does The Philippines' Government set upon those who voluntarily have themselves "crucified" on Good Friday, as an act of Christian Devotion/Lenten self-mortification {for instance, in the province of Pampanga, on Luzon}? 3 David Upp, Great Plains Conference Missionary April 1, 2015 April First: April Fool's Day Page for Twenty-Fifteen I saw an AD for a medicine called "Delsym" which included a reflection in a window. Bad idea, since "Delsym" back-wards is pronounced like "MIS-LED" ! Illiterate? Write for our Free Booklet! Joke: A frugal diner orders the Winkles and asks if he can get a discount since he brought his own pin and can thus extract them from their shells by himself. He also wants to get a wine to go with that meal, but nothing TOO expensive! The waiter suggests he order their least costly beverage, a nice Piso Mojado. {as follow-up on this motif, Here's a concert: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xz_scedM64} Petition Drive to BAN "DHMO" ... Dihydrogen monoxide: • • • • • • • • • is also called "hydroxyl acid", the substance is the major component of acid rain. contributes to the "greenhouse effect". may cause severe burns. is fatal if inhaled. contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape. accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals. may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes. has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients. Despite the Danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used: • • • • • • • • as an industrial solvent and coolant. in nuclear power plants. in the production of Styrofoam. as a fire retardant. in many forms of cruel animal research. in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, product remains contaminated by this chemical. as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products. The Chemical formula for Dihydrogen Monoxide is H2O. That is why it has NOT been BANNED in the USA. • For more details: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dihydrogen_monoxide_hoax IF current trends continue, by 2020 the ONLY meat in restaurants will be BACON. Brain-teaser: Why do Chinese men eat more rice than Japanese men? A Hong Kong drink is called "YinYong". Invented 80 years ago, it consists of coffee + green-tea-with-milk, mixed in the same cup, & served hot or cold. In Malaysia it's called Cham Kopi. I've drunk cans of 'Coke BLAK' [cola & coffee]. 4
