This amazing intersection of rivers has created a region where early settlers lived in fear of a mythical man-eating bird, continental explorations were made and cities were forged and transformed by the ebb and flow of nature, history and these mighty waterways. Our story began thousands of years ago. It continues today… with you. Jazz giant Miles Davis took his first breath here, and ultimately shaped an entire genre of music. Alton boasts the only public statue created to honor Davis in the Americas. Alton’s “Gentle Giant” Robert Wadlow, who stood at 8 feet 11.1 inches tall, still holds the world record as the tallest man. And no mention of larger than life figures would be complete without pointing out the impact Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas had in the final debate of their heated senatorial battle held in downtown Alton catapulting Lincoln into the national spotlight. Explore the stories of these giants of music, history, and myth throughout the Meeting of the Great Rivers. 1. SACAJAWEA Lewis & Clark Community College Campus, Godfrey. Facing west, the bronze vision of Native American explorer Sacajawea is set in the courtyard of this historic college campus. 2. MILES DAVIS STATUE Third St., Downtown Alton. Find Davis lost in song with his trumpet in the middle of Miles Davis Plaza. 3 4. PIASA BIRD Piasa Park, Alton. Painted high on the limestone bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, the mythological bird is a treasured local legend. 5. ROBERT WADLOW 2810 College Ave., Alton. How do you measure up to Robert Wadlow, the world’s tallest man? Check out this life size statue! 3. LOVEJOY MONUMENT Monument & 5th Sts., Alton. Pay tribute to a giant of the abolitionist movement, Elijah P. Lovejoy, who is honored with the tallest man-made monument in Illinois. 2 4 3 VisitAlton.com | 1-800-258-6645 | 7 T H I N G S T H AT G O BUMP IN THE NIGHT There’s a reason Alton is called “One of the Most Haunted Small Towns in America.” Whether it’s the spooky McPike Mansion where members of the once prominent family and their servants are said to appear to visitors or the Jasmine Lady who’s hauntingly lovely perfume fills the air of the Mineral Springs Hotel at unexpected times, the city is full of tales of the supernatural. Tour providers bring ghost stories home to visitors along the city’s eerie nighttime streets. Or ramp up the chill level with a dark of night cemetery tour and séance. Tell your own ghost story with the Haunted Alton app available free for iOS and Android phones. TO P H AU NTED S ITE S MCPIKE MANSION Thousands of visitors and paranormal investigators have visited the grounds of the notorious McPike Mansion claiming spirits still roam this property. Some claim the haunts date back to before the mansion was even built with Native American ghosts and a residue from a possible Underground Railroad stop. MINERAL SPRINGS MALL Once an elegant hotel and spa, this building’s history is filled with tragedy, murder, suicide, natural and accidental death, as well as many happy memories. Many of earth-bound spirits remain to haunt and make their presence felt and known. MILTON SCHOOL HOUSE The tragic tale of the school includes the unsolved mystery of a janitor who committed suicide and the associated negativity that can still be felt today. The Milton School was featured in an October 2010 Ghost Hunters (TAPS) television show on the Syfy Channel. FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH This church is the starting point of Alton Haunted Tours because of its association with the death of a pastor who is believed to still haunt visitors to the 100-year old church. MASONIC LODGE A spirit of a Confederate soldier haunts the basement of the lodge. He is believed to have been a fellow Mason who died in the nearby Confederate prison. 8 | Alton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau H AU NTED TO U R P ROV ID ERS H AU NTED A P P ALTON’S HAUNTED ODYSSEY Trolley tours are available through the most haunted areas of Alton. That amazing journey began at the Meeting of the Great Rivers, a place rich in history, legends and lore. Step into the Lewis & Clark adventure at the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site, the Number One site on the national Lewis & Clark Trail and follow the path the men took to prepare for their quest to find a river route to the Pacific Ocean.
