...a tale of three mighty rivers and early explorers;
of giants – real, imaginary and historical, and a
larger than life road that evokes a modern day quest.

Alton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau
Turn the page and embark on the adventure that begins with today’s confluence
of the Illinois, Missouri and Mississippi rivers. This amazing intersection of rivers has
created a region where early settlers lived in fear of a mythical man-eating bird,
continental explorations were made and cities were forged and transformed by the
ebb and flow of nature, history and these mighty waterways.
Our story began thousands of years ago.
It continues today… with you.

The giants of the Meeting of the Great Rivers come in all shapes and sizes. Jazz giant Miles
Davis took his first breath here, and ultimately shaped an entire genre of music. Alton boasts
the only public statue created to honor Davis in the Americas. Alton’s “Gentle Giant” Robert
Wadlow, who stood at 8 feet 11.1 inches tall, still holds the world record as the tallest man.
And no mention of larger than life figures would be complete without pointing out the impact
Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas had in the final debate of their heated senatorial battle
held in downtown Alton catapulting Lincoln into the national spotlight.
Explore the stories of these giants of music, history, and myth throughout the
Meeting of the Great Rivers.
1. SACAJAWEA
Lewis & Clark Community College Campus, Godfrey.
Facing west, the bronze vision of Native American
explorer Sacajawea is set in the courtyard of this historic
college campus.
2. MILES DAVIS STATUE
Third St., Downtown Alton. Find Davis lost in song
with his trumpet in the middle of Miles Davis Plaza.
3
4. PIASA BIRD
Piasa Park, Alton. Painted high on the limestone bluffs
overlooking the Mississippi River, the mythological bird is
a treasured local legend.
5. ROBERT WADLOW
2810 College Ave., Alton. How do you measure up to
Robert Wadlow, the world’s tallest man? Check out this
life size statue!
3. LOVEJOY MONUMENT
Monument & 5th Sts., Alton. Pay tribute to a giant
of the abolitionist movement, Elijah P. Lovejoy, who is
honored with the tallest man-made monument in Illinois.

BUMP
IN THE NIGHT
There’s a reason Alton is called “One of the Most Haunted Small Towns in America.” Whether
it’s the spooky McPike Mansion where members of the once prominent family and their
servants are said to appear to visitors or the Jasmine Lady who’s hauntingly lovely perfume
fills the air of the Mineral Springs Hotel at unexpected times, the city is full of tales of the
supernatural. Tour providers bring ghost stories home to visitors along the city’s eerie nighttime
streets. Or ramp up the chill level with a dark of night cemetery tour and séance. Tell your own
ghost story with the Haunted Alton app available free for iOS and Android phones.
TO P H AU NTED S ITE S
MCPIKE MANSION
Thousands of visitors and paranormal investigators have visited the
grounds of the notorious McPike Mansion claiming spirits still roam this
property. Some claim the haunts date back to before the mansion was
even built with Native American ghosts and a residue from a possible
Underground Railroad stop.
MINERAL SPRINGS MALL
Once an elegant hotel and spa, this building’s history is filled with tragedy, murder, suicide, natural and accidental death, as well as many happy
memories. Many of earth-bound spirits remain to haunt and make their
presence felt and known.
MILTON SCHOOL HOUSE
The tragic tale of the school includes the unsolved mystery of a janitor
who committed suicide and the associated negativity that can still be felt
today. The Milton School was featured in an October 2010 Ghost Hunters
(TAPS) television show on the Syfy Channel.
FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH
This church is the starting point of Alton Haunted Tours because of its association with the death of a pastor who is believed to still haunt visitors
to the 100-year old church.
MASONIC LODGE
A spirit of a Confederate soldier haunts the basement of the lodge. He is
believed to have been a fellow Mason who died in the nearby Confederate prison.

the Great Rivers delight visitors year-round. Embrace winter with a journey in search of the

the Grafton Winery and Brewhaus.
Lose yourself in the sounds of summer with live concerts in Alton or Grafton’s casual live
music in the park. See national acts booked into the intimate arena of the Liberty Bank Alton
Amphitheater, or watch the Independence Day fireworks flare their magnificence over the
Mississippi in Alton.
Let the wind whip through your hair and the sun color your cheeks during the annual Fall
Color Drives along the Meeting of the Great Rivers. Three different routes showcase the
dazzling display of Midwestern fall colors. Stop by the local orchards and roadside stands for
tree-ripened fruit and locally grown produce fed from the rich soil basin of the Great Rivers.

EXPLORE
THE HISTORY
OF THE RIVERS
With a gentle breeze at their backs and a bit of rain in the air, William Clark, Merriweather
Lewis and 45 men began one of the greatest explorations in history on May 14, 1804. That
amazing journey began at the Meeting of the Great Rivers, a place rich in history, legends and
lore. Step into the Lewis & Clark adventure at the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site, the Number
One site on the national Lewis & Clark Trail and follow the path the men took to prepare for
their quest to find a river route to the Pacific Ocean.
Cruise down the rivers on your own journey through history and follow the paths of explorers
Marquette and Joliet. Walk in Abraham Lincoln’s footsteps as he practiced law and stepped
closer to infamy as the nation’s 16th president. Share the journey of runaway slaves as they
make a connection to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Dig a bit deeper into Alton’s
history as home to the famed Western Military Academy, whose graduates include Paul
Tibbets, pilot of the Enola Gay, and William S. Paley, former head of the CBS television
network.

LINCOLN & THE CIVIL WAR
Travel in the footsteps of Lincoln and Civil War soldiers with
stories told at VisitAlton.com/Lincoln. The most popular sites
include the following:
CONFEDERATE MONUMENT
Confederate soldiers who died in Alton were laid to rest in a
mass burial site, now known as the Confederate cemetery. All
of their names are listed at the base of a monument of this
national cemetery. 635 Rozier St.
CONFEDERATE PRISON
In 1862, the Alton Prison, closed for its deplorable
conditions a few years earlier, was reopened as a military
prison for Confederate soldiers and southern sympathizers.
Malnourishment and disease quickly broke out, killing 1,354
Confederate and approximately 240 Union soldiers. Those
infected with Smallpox were quarantined on Sunflower Island.
William Street
LINCOLN-DOUGLAS SQUARE
The final and most important Lincoln-Douglas Debate was
held in Alton in October 1858. Two bronze statues depicting
Lincoln and Douglas pose frozen in time in heated debate.
Broadway Street & Landmarks Blvd.
LOVEJOY MONUMENT
On Nov. 7, 1837, abolitionist and newspaper editor Elijah
Lovejoy was murdered as he defended his press which was
later thrown in the Mississippi River. Pay tribute to this
martyr of the abolitionist movement at the tallest man-made
monument in Illinois which symbolizes freedom of the press.
Monument & 5th St.
LYMAN TRUMBULL HOUSE
Former Illinois Senator Lyman Trumbull’s house is Alton’s
only national landmark. Trumbull, a close friend of Lincoln, coauthored the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which
abolished slavery. 1105 Henry St.
ALTON LINCOLN TRAIL APP
Follow Lincoln along Alton’s Lincoln & Civil
War Legacy Trail when you download the
app. Navigate from site to site and listen to
audio tracks of each site’s unique story.
It was one of the greatest adventures
in American History...
...the exploration of the uncharted and unknown
upper Midwest and western United States in
search of a water route to the Pacific Ocean.
And it began right here where the Missouri
River meets the Mississippi.
This was the beginning of the adventure which
took over two years to complete and catapulted
the expedition into the history books. Learn
more about the journey, the preparations and
read actual excerpts from William Clark’s diary
by visiting the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site
in Hartford. This is where the true journey into
the unknown began!

The evolution of campus gardens
from Monticello to present day!
Take a stroll back to the beginnings of Monticello
College through the trees that have witnessed the
beginning of campus, and the historic buildings
that have been used to educate for more than
100 years. Be captivated by the spirit of
Lewis and Clark today and take part in the active
stewardship, advocacy and community-building
that is propelling the campus into a bright future.
The Monticello Sculpture Garden’s 2016 Garden
Show celebrates the college’s evolution in
two thematic garden zones – past and present.
