May 2015 Taylor Extension News Jeanette Coole Secretary Julie Matthews Nutrition Outreach Instructor John Murray Extension Agent 1st Year Overnighter Clover Bash 18 new campers and 13 teen leaders attended this year’s 1st year overnighter at Camp Towles April 10th and 11th. The teens led the new campers in games and activities as well as showed them around the camp facility, answering their questions about summer 4-H camp. On Saturday, all of the participants learned about visual presentations before preparing and giving their own visual presentations on topics ranging from blowing bubbles to folding origami. A HUGE Thank you goes out to all of the organizations , businesses, and individuals who made this fundraiser a GREAT success for the 4-H program. Over $1400 was raised to benefit 4-H members and county 4-H events. Arch Coal’s Leer Mine sent a representative to meet with the kids Saturday morning and present the Taylor County 4-H program with a donation for the Taylor County 4-H Endowment. How! How! WHEN: Sunday, May 31st in the afternoon WHO: 7th through 12th grade members Participants must meet the following weight requirements – minimum weight: 70lbs; maximum weight: 250lbs Participants must be comfortable with heights from 16’ to 40’ Participants must be able to pull themselves along the cable, slow themselves using a glove to create friction on the cable, and should be able to walk at least one mile WHERE: WVU Outdoor Education Center off the Coopers’ Rock Interstate Exit COST: FREE to Youth REGISTRATION: Contact the Extension Office by May 15th if interested Taylor Extension News Page 3 4-H Information 4-H T-Shirt Sale The Taylor County 4-H Leaders Association have 4-H T-Shirts at the Extension Office for sale. Taylor County 4-H People MAKE IT HAPPEN Words are printed in white Green 4-H clover is below Taylor County 4-H Camp Dates: June 21-25, 2015 WHO: Any youth who is at least 9 years of age as of September 30, 2015 and not older than 18 years of age as of June 22, 2015 Theme: 4-H Camping through the Years Cost: $75 —for Taylor County 4-H Members $95 —all other youth Available sizes and Quantity available: 6—Youth Small 8—Youth Medium 9—Youth Large 10—Adult Small 11—Adult Medium 13—Adult Large $40—scholarship for participants who are eligible for free and reduced meals 11—Adult XL 4—Adult 2XL 3—Adult 3XL Cost: $9.00 each for sizes Youth Small to Adult XL 2XL — $11.00 each, 3XL — $12.00 each Registration: Camp Forms are due in the Extension Office by May 22nd. T-Shirts will be available until all are sold STEM Camp PURPOSE: STEM Camp is a science immersive camp that provides 4-H members with hands-on experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to better understand these fields and their place in our lives. Campers get to experience STEM in action in the research labs of WVU while working in teams to find unique and creative solutions to real-world problems. The camp allows youth to see what it’s like to attend college as they work on campus with real-life scientists and engineers and live and eat in an actual WVU residence hall. WHO: Rising 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students from across West Virginia. Space is limited to 24 participants. WHEN: July 19-24, 2015 WHERE: WVU Campus Morgantown, WV COST: $250. Early Bird scholarships ($50) are available for those who register on or before June 1, reducing the cost to $200. REGISTRATION: Deadline is Monday, June 1, 2015. Deposit: This year a $10 deposit is due at time of registration Mountaineer Summer Drawing Academy PURPOSE: To provide West Virginia youth experiences in art, in order for them to have better mindfulness and observational abilities and an understanding of how artistic skills activate an understanding of space, place, perspective, and structure. WHO: West Virginia youth ages 13 to 17 recommended/ approved by art teacher/county Extension agent. Maximum camp enrollment is 30 youth. WHEN: July 22-25, 2015 WHERE: West Virginia University Evansdale Campus, Morgantown WV COST: $225. Scholarships of $100 are available to those who register by July 1rd reducing the cost to $125. REGISTRATION: Deadline is Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Page 4 Taylor Extension News Summer 4-H Camping Opportunities Older Members Conference PURPOSE: To develop leadership among older 4-H members through opportunities to discuss timely issues and problems. To teach new skills that can be used in local clubs and communities. WHO: West Virginia 4 H members entering 9th grade and recommended by the county Extension office. Conservation Camp PURPOSE: To acquaint West Virginia youth with the social and economic values of our natural resources and environment; to create in them a desire to save and defend from waste these resources; and, to develop future conservation leaders. WHO: Any youth who is at least 14 years of age on or before January 1, 2015, and not over 19 years of age by June 10, 2015. WHEN: June 14-20, 2015 WHERE: WVU Jackson’s Mill WHEN: June 15 – 20, 2015 COST: $270. $75 scholarship by deadline. WHERE: Camp Caesar, Cowen, West Virginia COST: $185. Twenty five, partial scholarships are available. Cost to the first 25 4-H’ers to register will be $95. REGISTRATION: FORMS: Postmark deadline is May 22nd will be available soon Alpha I & II Camps PURPOSE: To provide 4-H members personal development experiences to help better understand themselves, and to display personal confidence when assuming leadership positions. WHO: West Virginia 4 H members entering 6th grade and recommended by the county Extension office. Maximum camp enrollment is 400 4-H members. WHEN: Alpha I – July 5-10, 2015 Alpha II – July 12-17, 2015 WHERE: WVU Jackson’s Mill COST: $260. $65 scholarship by deadline. TRACKS: There are additional tracks available at the Alpha camps beyond the traditional camping program. Some of these tracks provide additional scholarship opportunities. REGISTRATION: Pr e-registration deadline for a 4-H scholarship is May 15, 2015. WHO: Ages 11 through 14. Camper must be 11 by June 16, 2014 and must not reach 15 on or before June 20, 2014. WHEN: June 15 – 19, 2015 WHERE: Cedar Lakes, Ripley, WV COST: $172. Trainings will be held: May 7 at 6:30pm Marion County Extension Office May 18 at 6:00pm —Taylor County Location is to be determined. These vouchers are very popular with senior customers at farmers markets and are very easy to accept. Please don’t pass up this opportunity for training if you plan on attending the markets as a vendor. Once the vouchers are distributed to the seniors it is too late to be trained for the year so you cannot wait to see what they are to decide. Firewood Processor Demo There will be a demonstration of a firewood processor at Marion County 4-H Camp Mar Mac on Saturday, May 16 at 10am. A firewood processor is designed to process high volumes of firewood in a short time period. Please assist us in preparing for this event by contacting the Marion County Extension Office at 304-367-2772 to RSVP if you plan to attend. Grafton Farmers Market Opening The Grafton Farmers Market will open on Wednesday, May 13. The market will be open on Wednesdays from 1-6pm and Saturday mornings from 9am- 1pm. The market will be held at the B&O Depot along Main Street. For additional information contact the Extension Office. Additional vendors are always welcome. Regional Grazing Management Workshop There will be a regional grazing management workshop held in the Belington area on June 27th. The day will involve demonstrations of fencing, sprayer and spreader calibrations, weed identification, grazing management and a tour of a very well managed rotational grazing operation. The program will begin at 9:00 and end midafternoon. Plans are being made to provide lunch, hopefully at no cost. Full details will be included in the June newsletter. RSVP will be required. Page 8 Taylor Extension News Agriculture News 4-H Livestock, Land, & Horticulture Judging contests 4th Annual Enhancing Public Understanding of Natural Gas Issues Conference Learn about the latest developments in West Virginia’s natural gas industry during the fourth annual Enhancing Public Understanding of Natural Gas Issues Conference at the Bridgeport Conference Center on Wednesday, May 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Organized by the West Virginia University Extension Service, the conference is free to the public and will feature presentations by industry experts in topics including West Virginia’s above-ground storage tank regulations, the state’s natural gas outlook for 2015, underground injection control, royalty payments and more. Conference pre-registration is required and limited. Those wishing to attend the conference should register online at www.wvuesngconference2015.eventbrite.com by May 8.
