Catholic Schools Week: Jan. 26th- Jan. 31st, 2014
Appreciation Day and
the Catholic Schools
Week Scholar Bowl
Tournament.
Nestled between two weeks of snow
days and disrupted schedules,
Catholic Schools Week went off
without a hitch this year. It was
a great week to celebrate what
makes Catholic Schools special and
unique.
Paula Mattix- Wand, Marquette
Campus Minister, planned a fun and
spiritual week for the students and
faculty of Marquette.
The week started off Sunday with
an all student trivia contest in the
Marquette gym. Student Council
moderator Beth DeCourcey planned
the event. Students formed teams
and brought snacks to share bribe
the judges. All the teams did great
but it was no surprise when the
Scholar Bowl team ended up the big
winners.
Tuesday was very
special this year
because we were
fortunate enough
to have Bishop
Paprocki visit
Marquette and
celebrate Mass with our student
body. We invited the 7th and 8th
graders from St. Ambrose,
St. Mary’s and Sts. Peter
and Paul and filled the gym.
The Knights of Columbus
were in attendance and Fr.
Bill Kessler, the Chaplain at
Marquette, concelebrated. The
Marquette Chorus performed
beautifully throughout the
Mass and helped make the
experience even more special. The
parent-led Explorer Club provided
Monday started our 40 Hour
Devotion, was Teacher/Staff
breakfast for the faculty and staff on
Tuesday as well. It was wonderful
and very much appreciated.
Wednesday was Pancake Breakfast
Day and Chef Paula Mattix-Wand
and her helpers went through 22
pounds of pancake mix as they fed
the student body before school.
Wednesday was Catholic Grade
School Shirt Day so students wore
their t-shirts and sweatshirts from
their various grade schools.
Also on Wednesday, a group of
cheerleaders visited St. Ambrose
to help teach the students various
dances. Mark Ellebracht, Marquette
Class of 1989, School Board
Member and father of St. Ambrose
students, played the role of DJ at
the St. Ambrose Dance and the
students had a great time.

A note from Mike Slaughter, Principal
Dear Alumni/ae, Friends and
Supporters of Marquette:
In the last Marquette Graduate I went on
and on about the “new” Marquette was
made possible through a capital campaign
which raised just short of $3 million. In the
year since we opened the “Commons”
many of you have come into the building
and have seen firsthand the remarkable
transformation. Not one single person has
said it was money “wasted.”
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK (Cont.)
interviewed by Mark Ellebracht on WBGZ
Radio. They did a great job representing
Marquette and talked about what Catholic
Education meant to them.
Later that day, the entire student body and
faculty went to the East Alton Ice Arena and
skated together. It was a great day of fun
and fellowship.
I hope more of you get a chance in the future to come in and see
all the changes. I know we are encouraging class reunions to be
held in the commons. Many classes have already done so and I
am looking forward to my own 40th reunion this summer when the
class of 1974 gathers in the commons.
As I speak with and about alumni, it is also fun to reminisce about
some of our teachers. I get a kick out of listening to stories from
alumni about “this” teacher and “that” teacher. Speaking of which,
I am sure by now many of you have heard that the Ursuline order
is selling the convent on Danforth Street. The Ursulines put a lot
of blood, sweat, and tears (those tears may have been from your
classmates) into Marquette since 1927. For them to no longer
have a presence in Alton will be sad. As I write this I can think of
many “nuns” who impacted my life in different ways. For some
reason, most of the nuns I had loved me…God bless ‘em. So,
next time you have a class reunion (probably those classes prior
to the ‘90’s) see if the conversation doesn’t eventually get around
to Mother “so and so” or Sister “so and so.” And watch to see if
you don’t find yourself smiling or even laughing. It is through these
reminisces that we will always keep the spirit of the Ursuline’s
alive in the halls of Marquette.
In closing, as I sit here and reminisce, I want to put this out there.
In one of the new display cases in the Commons, I am trying to
collect artifacts from past decades. For example there are class
rings (the oldest being from the class of 1930); old diplomas; old
Marquette Reviews; an old inkwell, etc. What I am asking is that
if you have something of significance which is a part of Marquette
history and it is just sitting in a drawer at home, do you want to
give or loan it to Marquette to put on display in the Commons?
I’d love to eventually have a class ring from every class. So think
about it. And meanwhile, think about us.

My Catholic Faith
By: Ella Walters, Age 5
(daughter of Science teacher
John Walters, class of 1980)
My Catholic Faith is all around me. My Daddy
works at Marquette Catholic High School. He
is a science teacher. My Mommy works at
the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. She does
something.
Here I am at St. Mary’s Catholic Grade
school in kindergarten, just down the
road from my Daddy’s School. When I go
to his school, he said I can sit on his desk
sometimes. I don’t think Mrs. Gable wants
me to sit on her desk.
All the colors are blue: MCHS is blue. The
Society of St. Vincent de Paul is blue. St.
Mary’s School is blue. My eyes are blue. The
sky is blue. God must like blue.
The End.

Marquette
Campus
Minister, Paula
Mattix- Wand
had a wonderful
conversation
with His
Eminence,
Cardinal Francis
George when
they were in
San Antonio
for the Knights
of Columbus
Supreme
Convention.
Mrs. MattixWand’s
Theology classes sent letters and cards to the
Cardinal when he was going through cancer
treatment earlier this year.
These students will represent Marquette on the
Illinois Central College baseball team next year
in Peoria. From left to right, Geoffrey Ferguson

for Breast Cancer Awareness
Pack The Place Pink: Friday, February 14
The St. Anthony’s Health Center partnered with
Marquette Catholic High School to increase awareness
for breast cancer and the importance of mammography
at the Valentine‟s Day basketball game between
the Marquette Explorers and the Roxana Shells. As
part of our Pack The Place Pink promotion, the first
300 admissions to the game received a pink SAHC/
Marquette t-shirt and rally towel!
These students signed letters of intent to play
college sports for the 2014-2015 school year.
Front row left to right: Caroline Hoefert (SIU
Edwardsville, soccer), Danielle Huber (Illinois
Wesleyn, soccer), Jordan Hinterser (Chicago State,
soccer), Elaina Smith (Converse College in South
Carolina, golf)
Back left to right: Geoffrey Ferguson (ICC Peoria,
baseball) Joel Reft (Truman State, soccer) and
Austin Siener (ICC Peoria, baseball)
Congratulations and best wishes to these fine
young men and women.
“This is a great opportunity to spread the message
about the importance of mammography, as early
stage breast cancer is often found in a mammogram,”
says Tracy Phillips, patient navigator for our Women’s
Imaging Center. “Saint Anthony’s offers the very best
in breast imaging – we are the only mammography
facility in the River Bend to be recognized as a Breast
Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College
of Radiology.”
Working closely with primary care physicians and
specialists, Tracy provides women with breast cancer
support and guidance through their cancer diagnosis
and treatment. She advocates for yearly mammography
screenings. “Women, age 40 and older, should have
yearly screenings – once a year for life,” she says.

A note from Jodie Zipprich
Junior/Senior Academic Counselor
They’re Baaack!!!!
College counseling is very important to a College Prep
School like Marquette. It is my job to make sure that
the juniors and seniors and their families have all the
information they need when it comes to college applications
and financial aid.
Throughout the school year, we have several colleges and
universities visit Marquette to talk to students interested
in applying. This is a great way for our students to get to
know a little more about the schools they are interested in.
It also sparks interest for students who were unaware of the
schools prior to the visit.
The Financial Aid Guidance night took place in January
at Marquette and many families of juniors and seniors
attended the informational evening.
We have a Career Day coming up on February 26 as part
of retreat week this year. We expect to have at least 25
occupations represented. If any alum would be interested
in participating in this in the future, please contact me at
jzipprich@marquettecatholic.org.
Other upcoming events in the counseling office include an
ACT prep course that will be offered by SIUE but take place
at Marquette.
A Message from
Sarah Ulrich
Marquette Athletic Director
We had a great season of Fall sports this year at Marquette.
Some of the highlights include:
• Football - qualified for playoffs, Prairie State Champs
• Girls Golf - Elaina Smith qualified for state
• Boys Golf - Prairie State Champs
The Winter sports are in full swing. The wrestling team is
heading to the Regional Competition this week and the
other sports will follow. The Dance Team is going to the
State Competition in Peoria in March.
Many thanks to all the fans, friends and alums who support
our athletic teams.
After an eight-year hiatus, the Marquette
Dance Team is back in competition and they
are winning! This year at Belleville East they
took 1st place in both Hip Hop and Kick; then
they went on to Edwardsville where they
took 1st place in Hip Hop, qualifying for State
competition. Next, they went on to Belleville
West for a 1st place in Kick and a 2nd place
in Hip Hop. Here they qualified both for
State with Dance Team Illinois. These are an
amazing group of talented, hard-working girls
who are intense and focused wherever they
perform. For two years they have practiced,
worked with some well-known choreographers
(Tiger Williams), and were the first to ever
receive a standing ovation by the opposing
visitors when they performed at the half at a
Marquette basketball game.
Coached and taught by Stefanie Klaus,
captain and member of the IDTA State
Champion squad at Marquette in 1999,
2000, and 2002, the girls have brought a
tradition back to Marquette. Her assistant
Coach, Melissa (Hertz) Keller, a 2006
State Champion, brings her expertise and
choreography skills to teach and refine the
team.
Come see them perform at the football and
basketball games; you will see a group of
dancers who have perfected their skills, love
what they do, and are proud to represent
Marquette!
Notes from the Advancement Office
Meg Miller
Marquette is advancing it’s Mission one day at a time.
The 2013-2014 school year has been great so far.
The freshman class is 130 strong with students
from Jerseyville, Edwardsville, Alton, Godfrey,
Bethalto, Granite City, Florissant, MO and many other
municipalities. We provide bus service to Florissant,
Jerseyville and Edwardsville. Many of our Granite City
students take the Madison County Transit bus to get to
and from Marquette and of course many students drive.
We have truly become a regional school.
To start the school year, we had a New Family picnic to
welcome students and their families to the Marquette
family. October brought homecoming and all the
activities that go with it. Our open house took place in
October as well and we started all over again talking to
students about attending Marquette for next year.
The entrance exam for incoming freshman was given
in January and the 130+ 8th graders who took the test
are anxiously awaiting their results. They will come back
with their parents in March and register for their classes
for next year. We look forward to getting the know the
next freshman class, the class of 2018. And the cycle
continues.
If you have not been to visit Marquette in a while, please
stop by. We would love to show you around. You are
always welcome here. Thanks for your continued support
of Marquette.
The Renaissance Society celebrates it’s 25th
anniversary this year. Based on an average
of $40,000 per year, Renaissance has raised
over $1,000,000 during its lifetime and was
originally a project begun by Mike Kane
and Paul Maley. We thank everyone who
has contributed to Marquette through the
Renaissance Society for the past 25 years.
Members of the Marquette Renaissance
Society provide annual contributions of at
least $1,000 to help bridge the gap between
money received from tuition and fees and the
actual cost of educating students. We thank
the following individuals for their support of
Marquette for the 2013-2014 school year. If
you would like to make a contribution to the
Renaissance Society please visit us at www.
marquettecatholic.org/renaissance
Veteran’s Heritage Project
The Veteran’s Heritage Project (VHP) is an
organization that was created to help connect
students throughout the United States with the
nation’s veterans. This is the newest organization
at Marquette Catholic High School and was started
by Miss Wiedman with the help of a Marquette
alumnus, Barbara Hatch.
The purpose of Marquette’s chapter of the VHP
is to preserve the stories of the Riverbend area
veterans for all of history while also educating
students on these historical events and people
through journalism. Participating students will
interview veterans who have agreed to tell their
stories and have these stories recorded on camera
and in a published book that will be sent to the
Library of Congress with the student’s names being
credited as the authors of each interview.
Students will witness primary source accounts of
important historical events that have shaped this
nation through their interviews and will get the
opportunity to preserve these stories in history.
Veterans get the chance to tell their story to be
published for history while also education the youth
of America through their interviews and the bonding
process that takes place from separate generations
working together to make history.
Please email mwiedman@marquettecatholic.org if
you are interested in participating in this project.
