A message from Rabbi Rick Kellner
Olam chesed yibaneh…To build the world
from love is a challenge that has perplexed every generation from Noah, to Abraham, to Moses through the days of the Temple into modern times. Human beings have been inclined
to conquer and tear down rather than co-exist
and build up. While many of us have witnessed
remarkable changes in our lifetimes, we recognize that we still live in a world that is torn apart
by violence, hatred and bigotry. Whether it is
in Ferguson, New York, Cleveland, Chapel Hill,
Athens, Ohio, Jackson, Mississippi or any other
place in the country, we can discover the ugly
head of hatred.
As we enter the month of March, we will turn
the clock back 50 years to reflect on the 1965
Voting Rights Laws that were sparked by the civil
rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. Hand in hand, singing, “We Shall Overcome”, African-Americans, Jews, Protestants,
Catholics, Muslims and people of all races and
creeds marched together for justice.
Hollywood has brought this significant historical moment to life with the recent release
of the film Selma. While it visually showed the
struggle and the peaceful resistance led by Rev.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we know that this
struggle and change did not happen in a vacuum. In fact, the Jewish community had a long
commitment to standing up for civil rights.
The 1964 Civil Rights legislation and the 1965
Voting legislation were written on the desk of the
Reform Movement’s Religious Action Center office (www.rac.org). Rabbi Maurice Eisendrath,
the President of the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations (now the Union for Reform Judaism), famously carried a Torah with him on the
march to Montgomery.
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel - who King
often referred to as his Rabbi – was invited to
join King on the third march. The photograph
of Heschel and King walking together (on back
cover) and also another photo of Eisendrath
carrying the Torah (top right) have become
symbolic of the coalition of Jews with African
Americans throughout the Civil Rights Era.
Heschel famously said, “For many of us the
march from Selma to Montgomery was about
protest and prayer. Legs are not lips and walking
is not kneeling. And yet our legs uttered songs.
Even without words, our march was worship. I
felt my legs were praying.”
The words of the Mi Chamocha, our prayer
for redemption and freedom that we say each
morning and evening, remind us of our continued responsibility to work together to bring justice and freedom to the world. The prayer calls
upon God to rise up and bring about redemption. By recalling the great communal experience of walking through the parted waters we
are reminded of the oppression we felt in Egypt
and are reminded of our obligation to respond to
cries of injustice.
On Friday, March 6, the eve of the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday (the first attempted
march in Selma when the marchers were attacked), we will welcome Pastor Charles Tatum
of Good Shepherd Baptist Church to deliver the
sermon. He will be joined by their large, 40 50 person choir of the church who will join with
our choir to sing songs and spirituals of the civil
rights era. We will commemorate the Jewish and
African-American coalition of working together
on civil rights and we will be reminded that we
pursue justice and the need to continue to work
to bring about Dr. King’s dream.

A letter from the President
Dear Fellow Congregants,
On Monday evening, Feb.
23, the congregation gathered
to hold a special meeting to
authorize the sale of a portion
of our land to a neighbor. This
land sale is contingent on receiving approval to host a faith
based early childhood learning center on site. In order for
the land sale to be completed,
Worthington City council must
approve this on site use and we
must be past any time period
allotted for potential appeals.
I am very proud of our congregational turnout - 222 member families voted at this special
meeting. The land sale contract
was approved, but much more
important, the will of the congregation was clearly heard.
The final results for this vote
were:
• 203 votes for
• 18 votes against
• 1 abstention
On behalf of the working
committee, the staff, and the
Board of Trustees, thank you
for your active participation in
this important congregational
matter. We had multiple information sessions, hundreds of
emails between committees and
individual members, and hours
of research and planning. It is
terrific to see the engagement
and interest in this project.
As a result of the affirmative
vote, this committee will turn
its attention to completing the
Worthington approval process.

Ian chose to organize and
conduct a Charity Walk/Run
Event, in honor of his Nana
Delidow and Aunt Carol. Ian
picked the Columbus Blue
Jackets Foundation to donate
100% of the proceeds to. The
Foundation focuses its efforts on pediatric cancer and
over the last 2-months, Ian raised $2,300!
Ian has always been a fast runner and this past
fall, he took interest in competing by participating
on the cross country team. Throughout the season
(both in meets & practices, he consistently finished
amongst the top group of runners). Tennis is another
sport that Ian has been playing for 2-years and has
plans to try out for the middle school team in the
coming weeks.
Ian is an avid fan of the Columbus Blue Jackets
and enjoys attending a number of games each season.
He collects CBJ memorabilia and has a number of
unique, autographed items of various Jackets players.

House from March 1 to April 19.

Children’s Hospital. Families have been able to stay at the Ronald McDonald
House of Central Ohio for three decades. We are putting together donations of their “Top 10 Most Wanted” wish list for RMHC and snack bags for
families.

have now donated over 153 gallons of
soup over the past nine years.

airline pilot, and Brandi, a cellist have
lived in the Columbus area for about
seven years. They joined Beth Tikvah
last summer in order to be a part of
a Jewish community closer to home
than their previous congregation. Their
daughter Juliet (2 1/2) participates in the
Parent Tot program and recently became
big sister to Robert born Jan. 10, 2015.

While many congregants at Beth
Tikvah contribute their volunteer efforts on behalf of the congregation, Jeff
Wasserstrom stands out for his ongoing effort to organize the Brotherhood’s
“Souper Bowl” Chicken Soup Cook-Off
over the past nine years.
Thanks to Jeff ’s efforts, this year’s
event was probably the most successful.
All funds from the cook-off are used to
provide scholarships to assist Beth Tikvah families who send their children to
Jewish summer camps.
In addition to benefiting the Jewish Summer Camp Fund, the “Souper
Bowl” has also become a major social
event at Beth Tikvah where congregants can get out of the cold weather
and have a fun time together sampling
delicious soup and challah.
When asked why he has worked on
this project, Jeff explained that he was
inspired by Ed Schecter (of blessed
memory) who chaired the first “Souper
Bowl” nine years ago.
“Children who attend Jewish summer camps,” Jeff observed, “develop a

deeper and longer-lasting connection
with their Jewish heritage. That is why
my fellow Brotherhood members and I
have worked on this program.”
His wife Cheryl, daughter Sarah,
and son Jason, have also worked with
Jeff on the “Souper Bowl.”

Springs twitter patter bring mitzvot

coming, spring is coming, please...no
really it is! With it a host of opportunities at Beth Tikvah to join in with life’s

and the March on Selma, Purim, Purim
Carnival, Passover & of course Mitzvah
Day. I love spring, especially after a
cold winter. Everything seems new.
Coming through a rough winter
into warmth allows us to think about
our Jewish journey in Passover. Don’t
forget that there are modern perspectives in the Passover lessons. This
change in weather, also allows us to focus on our environment and reminds
us that we are alive and we should be
thankful for everything our planet

answer questions of her young peers.
I hope that some of you had the
opportunity to participate in our Tu
BiSh’vat Seder. It was a great evening
organized by Stacy Levin and Judy
Weisberg. We ate delicious foods. We
also learned about how we could opt for
Green Energy in our homes from AEP,
or electricity from the sun.
On Mitzvah Day, Lydia and Simon
Joseph will be providing information
on Environmental Conservation and
Preservation. They will have a bake
sale to benefit non-profits in Columbus
that lead the charge. Please come enjoy
some yummy goodies and listen to interesting information that may help us
lessen our impact on our environment.
I will soon be posting the proposed
projects for Mitzvah Day and needed
items. Mitzvah Day on April 12 is such
a wonderful opportunity for personal
and congregational Tikkun Olam. It
helps us help others, each other and
renew our spirits. This year our focus
will be on environment, hunger and
homelessness. Please join us. There are
projects to fit everyone’s interests. And
there is still time for you to propose a
project close to your heart.

This morning an NPR Morning
Edition radio segment stated that politicians hoping to run a presidential
campaign in 2016 must raise $100 million this year to prepare. Is that magnitude hard for you to imagine? To wage
a red, white and blue, most successful
yard sale of biblical proportions ever,
about $16,000 of chazeri must be dusted, donated, unwrapped, priced and
sold. This sum represents an enormous
pile of unwanted, not needed and recyclable goods about the size of Mt. Sinai.
Luckily, Beth Tikvah congregants are
exceedingly able to amass quantities
of as-good-as new stuff year after year.
Some would say the “c” in congregant
stands for consumer.
This year’s sale will be the week
after the Fourth of July. Collection of
donated items will begin in May when
Religious and Hebrew schools recess
for the summer. Please start to declutter your closets and cupboards. Box
goods and stack them in your garage or
basement as you do spring-cleaning.

Dear Congregants,
We have a special opportunity for you to recognize your loved ones – as well as those who are of blessed
memory – by dedicating copies of our new High Holy Days prayer book (Mishkan HaNefesh) in their honor.
The book is scheduled to be ready in time for High Holy Days 2015.
The Ritual Committee is offering Mishkan HaNefesh dedications for $36/set (which includes both Rosh
HaShanah and Yom Kippur books). Your dedication will be considered a tax deductible donation, and the
money will be allocated to the Congregation Beth Tikvah Prayer Book Fund.

Friday, March 6, at 7:15 p.m.
Shabbat Evening Service celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and the
march on Selma. Reverend Charles W. Tatum of the Good Shepard
Baptist Church will be our special speaker. We will also be joined by
their 40-person, large choir who will perform at the conclusion of the
service to help us commemorate the march on Selma.
