Those sweet days
of the 1950s
W
e’ve all heard about those days. Those sweet
days of the 1950s. And, although I wasn’t
around then, many who are in the association
may remember them first hand.
Top-down nights made for great cruzin’ down Waikiki
or Banyan Drive on the Big Island. It was the days of
Don the Beachcomber, Trader Vic, Canlis and Coco’s
restaurants…hearing Alfred Apaka or auntie Genoa
Keawe sing, or Gabby Pahinui’s slack-key guitar.
I’m a second generation dealer, born in Japan, with earliest memories of
Hawaii in the 70s when my family opened its first dealership in Waipahu
(near Sky Slide!). And like Meatloaf sings, things may appear closer in
the rear view mirror, and indeed, those 70s don’t seem that long ago. They
are light years away in distance, though, when it comes to comparing
automotive technology.
The cars of today--like the 350 new vehicles annually displayed at the First
Hawaiian International Auto Show—each contain more internal computer
power than NASA used to put man on the moon.
And the cars starting to gain acceptance in 2010 will cruise a lot farther
on a gallon of gasoline, while many new models will be propelled by
hybrid electric /gas power, biofuel / flex-fuel power, electric power, diesel
power, hydrogen, and who knows what at this point. A state plan unique
to America--Hawaii’s Clean Energy Initiative--seeks to make fossil fuel,
well….a dinosaur in twenty short years. Governor Linda Lingle, who
comes from a longtime car dealer family, the Cutter family, will speak at
our HADA Golden Jubilee Celebration. Much thanks to HADA board
member James Hanley for chairing the event, and Bank of Hawaii’s Byron
Hansen for chairing the accompanying golf event.
Though Hawaii’s dealers join elected officials in seeking to wean Hawaii
from fossil fuel, we think the night of commemorating our Golden Jubilee,
will be, if you pardon the expression…a gas. See you all, Saturday, October
3rd at the J.W. Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa!

Looking Back
Oh, those ‘50’s.
…tall-finned chromemobiles ruled.
A colloquial term in the United States which described rear-wheel drive sedans with very generous exterior
proportions and spongy suspensions was land yachts --alluding to luxury, size, and a ride that gave a floaty feeling.
freedom of mobility
…a car afforded new-found freedoms, for a quick bite out at
the drive-in restaurant, a chance to cruise Waikiki, drive to a
new job or school on the other side of the island, or head to
a drive-in movie theater on Saturday night.

HADA Timeline
Building on a legacy of dealer involvement
A present-day HADA connection to Hawaii’s first car
The first automobile in Hawaii, a Woods Electric, arrived October 8, 1899. Its owner, Henry
P. Baldwin, was the great great grandfather of HADA board member Charlie King, and cofounder of Alexander & Baldwin, the parent company of longtime HADA associate member
Matson Navigation Co.
A new car created excitement back then, just as one does today. Many, in Hawaii, referred
to the new contraption by the commonly used name “horseless carriage.”
HADA by-laws signed in 1959
1959
The new car dealers association wasn’t formed until 60 years later, in the statehood year of 1959. The official filing of
the bylaws of the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association took place on February 17, 1959, during territorial times, since
statehood wasn’t declared until August of that year.
The early Association had about 20 members, many with colorful names like Dutch, Speed, and Axel.
The auto industry leaders in the 60’s included Robert Maxey, G.E. “Dutch” Schuman, James Zukerkorn, “Speed” Reynolds
and Axel Silen.
Servco provides accounting services to HADA
A key figure who made generous contributions was Servco Pacific’s Thomas Fukunaga, who made
available his staff to provide valuable accounting services to HADA, something the company
provided for decades.
1972
Hardy Hutchinson hired as manager
In 1972, the Association hired Hardy Hutchinson, a former radio announcer and
newspaper journalist to serve as executive secretary. Hardy, a Hilo boy, preferred to use
the old sugar mill title of “manager.”

1974
In 1974, HADA initiated efforts toward the establishment of an auto safety inspection system in all counties.
1977
HADA bill relieves dealer of responsibility on loaner car
In 1977, under the guidance of legislative chair Ken Matsumoto, HADA was successful in getting ACT 73 enacted. The
law made liability under the No Fault law secondary to the dealer who loans a vehicle, free of charge, to a customer
whose vehicle is in the shop for repairs. In 1976, there were 483,000 cars, trucks and buses on the roadways in Hawaii.
HADA dealers provide vehicles for drivers ed
1978
In 1978, Association members provided 63 vehicles for the State’s driver education
program. The vehicles were leased to the state at a dollar a year per vehicle. In
that year the Association worked to help pass the state’s odometer roll-back law
which was modeled after similar laws being enacted across the nation at the time.
Walter Dods, Jr. helps launch first auto show on Oahu
Also in 1978, Walter Dods, Jr., then marketing director of First Hawaiian Bank, convinced
13 dealers to send vehicles to the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall for what was to be the
first auto show on Oahu. The First Hawaiian International Auto Show continues to this
day, with the bank as title sponsor, and now employing Motor Trend Auto Shows as the
show producer--- which, by a wide margin, is the largest producer of auto shows in the
U.S. with 24 shows.
HADA silver anniversary draws 270+
1984
In 1984, the HADA newsletter reported that “as of October 23, 1984, 270 had registered to attend our Silver Anniversary
at Stouffer’s Wailea. About 100 golfers had signed up.”

HADA helps initiate mandatory seat belt law
In 1985, Representative Brian Taniguchi and Senator Ben Cayetano
introduced mandatory seat belt legislation at HADA’s request. The
measure passed and was signed into law.
HADA helps craft Hawaii’s lemon law
1992
In 1992, HADA legislative chair Joe Nicolai was instrumental in crafting Hawaii’s used car lemon law which provided
customers state-mandated warranty protections on qualifying used cars sold in the Hawaii market. This law was modeled
after many other used car lemon laws being passed in the other 49 states.
Gerald Cutter involves more dealers in board activities
In 1992, HADA president Gerald Cutter wrote, “this has been a particularly active year for our
Association, with Industry Relations, headed by Joe Nicolai, Advertising and Ethics headed by Dave
Chun, Long Range Planning, chaired by Andy Nakano, and Health Insurance lead by Nick Cutter. In
that year the Association made a determined effort to become more involved in the communities,
making contributions to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Hawaii’s Youth at Risk. At
president Cutter’s urging more dealer principals became involved in the dealer association board.
HADA donates $40,000 to Hurricane Iniki victims
In 1992, after Hurricane Iniki, the Association contributed more than $40,000 to assist employees of Kauai members who
sustained heavy personal losses.

HADA contracts firm to help manage association
1999
Hardy retired in May of 1999 and the Association contracted Rolf Advertising to assist with managing the association.
2000
HADA’s “7 Magic Words” bill helps provide free loaner cars
In 2000, HADA introduced and successfully worked for passage of a bill that allowed auto dealers to provide free loaner
cars to customers who had purchased extended service contracts. Hawaii was the only state in the country to prevent
dealers from providing such. Associate member, Cavanah and Associates initially crafted the legislation. HADA’s bill
was known as the “7 Magic Words” bill. It added seven words to the law to allow dealers to provide “for substitute
transportation, towing, and roadside assistance.” Previously such services had been considered insurance, requiring an
insurance license to sell. Extended service contract purchasers were then able to enjoy three benefits previously denied
in Hawaii.
First Hawaiian International Auto Show
In 2000, HADA, along with title sponsor First Hawaii Bank, helped move the First
Hawaiian Auto Show to Hawaii’s new convention center, and with the assistance
from Liberty Productions (later Motor Trend Auto Shows), helped create an auto
manufacturer “international” trade show that introduced Hawaii car enthusiasts
to the latest in domestic and international new vehicles. Revenues from the show
help support the association’s activities and charitable contributions. The Honolulu
Advertiser annually is co-sponsor of the event along with HADA.
7 Cars for 7 Teachers Program
Revenues from the auto show helped provide a HADA vehicle for the 7
Cars for 7 Teachers Program (use of the vehicle for a year), and created
an 84-foot “wall of words” curriculum display that later provided the
foundation for dealer-sponsored education legislation to create annual SAT
9/10 testing in grades 3 through 8 and one year in high school. Today,
some 51 cars (use for a year) have been provided through individual
dealers and dealer/manufacturer ad groups.

HADA helps launch national legislation on estate tax
2001
In 2001, with NADA director Damien Farias assisting, HADA helped introduce Hawaii
Congressman Neil Abercrombie to the issues relating to NADA’s efforts to eliminate the estate
tax. Hawaii’s Congressman led 65 of his colleagues on to the bill, and for the first time in
90 years, legislation passed the Congress initiating a phase-out of the death tax. Efforts for
permanent repeal continue. This year the exempted amount in an estate has climbed from
$675,000 per spouse to $3,500,000 per spouse. And the rate on the remaining amount in the
estate has been lowered from 55% to 45%. Since the tax falls to zero in 2010 and returns to near
previous levels in 2011, HADA seeks a permanent solution this year. The change represents a
savings in estates of roughly $24,000,000,000 ($24 bil) per year.
HADA’s bill adds clarity relating to customer’s right to cancel
In 2001, there was plenty of confusion about a customer’s right to cancel a contract. HADA’s bill provided clarity.
2002
HADA secures passage of bill to tax out-of-state vehicle purchases
In 2002, HADA obtained passage of legislation requiring purchasers of out-of-state vehicles brought to Hawaii, to pay
their fair share of taxes by requiring that 4% be paid before the vehicle could be registered. The state will receive almost
$2,000,000 more per year in previously uncollected tax revenues as a result of the HADA bill.
HADA’s 2-year early sunset of tire tax
In 2002, HADA was successful in obtaining a 2-year early sunset of the tire tax, because the scrap tire
cleanup had been completed; it was the first time in legislative history that a tax had been eliminated
early. The measure saved dealers and consumers roughly $750,000.
HADA launches the HawaiiDealer—the association’s official publication
In 2002, under the direction of HADA president Charlie King, the HawaiiDealer quarterly magazine was
launched. The publication which is mailed to HADA members, state elected officials, national directors
and staffs of the NADA, and is published on the web is used to launch most HADA board meetings as a
review of recent association activities.

HADA authored and shepherded to passage comprehensive franchise laws
The year 2003 marked HADA’s successful authorship and passage of the state’s auto dealer/distributor franchise bill.
Hawaii thus became the 50th state to have comprehensive statutes regulating the licensing of dealers, distributors, and
manufacturers. Also in this year, the Honolulu City Council, at HADA’s request, and with the urging of Councilmember
Nestor Garcia, authorized $175,000 to help streamline the DMV’s auto registration system. DMV then launched its online Motor Vehicle Information System—which allows dealers to check for outstanding parking tickets held in lien against
a used vehicle.
Manheim-sponsored Hawaii Auto-tech Scholarship (HATS) fund
At the 2003 HADA convention, the Manheim-sponsored Hawaii Autotech Training auction netted
$15,000 for tech scholarships. The program reached its projected corpus of $50,000 in 2008 and
funds will be distributed from earnings starting next year.
Dealer Day at the State Capitol
The year 2003 also marked HADA’s first Dealer Day at the State Capitol, a tradition
which started under the direction of then HADA president Joe Hanley and has
continued each session on the day following Opening Day. Dealers gather to talk with
our state’s legislators over a plate lunch at the Capitol.
HADA DATA—Hawaii Auto Outlook launches in 2003
2003
An important feature of HADA publications is the Hawaii Auto Outlook—used extensively by local media for stories
reporting to the public on the state of the industry---and used by the state data book, and state’s lemon law officials.
2004 HADA helps establish AFIP as NADA’s nation-wide trainer for F&I
HADA held the nation’s first association-sponsored AFIP training program under the direction of
then HADA president Wayne De Luz. AFIP, using a HADA letter of recommendation, was later
selected as NADA’s designated national F&I trainer.

Culminating a climb from a 20-year low of 40,673 new vehicles in 1998—the bottom of the “lost decade of the nineties”
HADA dealers sold 70,268 new vehicles in 2005.
HADA launches extensive website: www.hawaiiautodealer.com
Under then HADA president Eric Fukunaga, in 2005, HADA launched an extensive website with dealer
locators, associate member locators, and many other features.
2006
HADA’s bill adds clarity to law on negative equity on credit sale contracts
In 2006, after Ford Motor Credit and others expressed concern that Hawaii was one of several states without specific
language relating to negative equity on credit sale contracts, HADA worked with DCCA and state banking officials to
draft and pass a law adding the language needed for clarity.
HADA helps Sen. Inouye craft national fuel economy standards
In 2007, during a Washington D.C. meeting, HADA’s director on the NADA board, Joe Hanley
worked with Senator Daniel Inouye and his staff during a substantive meeting to help insure that
trucks and cars were handled in separate fashion in the final legislation establishing Corporate
Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. NADA later thanked HADA and Joe for the key role
played in crafting the national standards.

HADA secures passage of bill eliminating tax on warranty reimbursements
In 2008, HADA initiated and shepherded through to passage a bill eliminating $1,500,000 in taxes on new vehicle
warranty repairs which dealers and/or automakers had been paying per year for more than 30 years.
Hawaii’s television, cable, and radio stations run “you auto buy now”
On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed the bill exempting sales taxes on new car
purchases on qualifying consumers’ 2010 IRS returns, but it took a special colloquy on the floor
of the Senate, arranged by Senator Inouye’s staff in conjunction with HADA and NADA to get
an exemption for Hawaii’s new car customers because of our state’s unique excise tax. TV, cable
and radio stations responded by donating to HADA $375,000 in airtime to get the important
information out to car buyers.

HADA commemorates its 50-Year Golden Jubilee October 3, 2009
HADA dealers and associate members will gather Saturday, October 3, 2009 at a dinner at the J.W. Marriott Ihilani
Resort and Spa to “honor the past, celebrate the present, and look to a bright future” for the association. Governor
Linda Lingle will be the featured speaker.
Joe Nicolai sums HADA’s mission
HADA remains vigilant in serving our community and fulfilling our mission, which has been
summarized by the ever-succinct, and longtime HADA legislative chair, Joe Nicolai when he said:
“HADA’s mission is to help auto dealers comply with the laws so as to make car buying by the
general public trouble-free.”
