EVR allows vehicles to be registered and plated from
sites like auto dealerships.
Third party service providers will help in the development of the needed software
interchange with the DMV main computer, train dealership personnel in their respective systems and coordinate the electronic vehicle registration process.
It’s all about the 1s and 0s.
The vehicle registration process has “gone digital” in more than a couple dozen
states across the U.S.
Eliminating the “hard-copy” forms that remain in the system is the goal.
Proposed federal legislation is helping.
HADA recently logged in with support of added language to the federal Highway
Bill which would allow for eSignature on the required Federal Odometer Disclosure Form—taking the form to digital format, eliminating paper and speeding up
the process of recording the odometer reading at time of transfer.
HADA’s members sent a letter to Senator Brian Schatz, who is on the Senate
Commerce Committee, requesting his help in securing adoption of the needed
authorization language.

Eliminating dealers from standing in line at DMVs will free up customer service
time for other key DMV services, making the process more efficient for all.

Cover Story
It’s about the Benjamins
and the Yuan
A
high diving board, this TransPacific Partnership is.
Indeed, pulling too far to the
political left or too far to the political
right on this pending international
trade pact dive will make for a highly
injurious landing.
It’s all about the Benjamins. And the
yuan. In the end, which international
currency will be number one?
Maybe it’s time to take another look
at The Wizard of Oz.
What so many of us delighted in as
a wonderful children’s tale, might
have actually been written about a
bi-metal standard for the American
currency. Oz stood for ounce of gold.
The yellow brick road, another gold
metaphor. America, after the discovery
of the Comstock Load, a huge silver
mine, debated the merits of basing its
currency on both silver and gold.
The American farmers, depicted by
Scarecrow in the story, were anxious
to pay back debts in a new currency
based in part on silver. Their debts
had been incurred under the gold
standard. Factory workers too,
depicted by the Tin Man, wanted to
pay back their debts using a new bimetal standard.
Wizard of Oz author Frank Baum, a
political cartoonist and satirist of the
late 1800s, let the Wicked Witch of the
East, who was crushed by the falling
Kansas farm house, depict the East
Coast’s Wall St. bankers.
Originally Baum had made the color
of the slippers silver, but MGM, for
purposes of its first big color motion
picture, made them ruby red.
8
Nick Cutter and Eric Fukunaga enjoying a conversation before the start of the
executive committee meeting called to discuss the Trans Pacific Partnership.
Congressman Mark Takai had asked for input on the TPP.
To complete globally is the key to a nation’s wealth and
power.
The new Chinese-coordinated effort –the Asian
Infrastructure Investment Bank agreements—which
consist largely of funds provided by Chinese and European
countries, now totals around 57 Prospective Founding
Member countries but does not include the U.S.
Currently, because the U.S. has such a wide range of
investment opportunities, the U.S. dollar is the world’s
leading reserve currency, followed by the Euro, the British
pound sterling, the Japanese yen, and China’s yuan.
Some say the U.S. administration is seeking to establish
stronger trade with economies around the Pacific Rim to
offset this effort, and thus, at the current time, is excluding
China from the TPP.
For many emerging countries, the holding of large amounts
of a reserve currencies is a strategy used to insure the
stability of their own financial systems.
There are those with different views. Some see trade as a
ruthless assault on their values and traditions.
Economists, in general, agree that international trade is
good. It allows countries to specialize.
If a country is seen to be in poor financial shape,
international speculators may begin selling their
investments, driving that country’s currency value down. If
sufficient reserves are held in a world reserve currency, like
the dollar, that struggling country could start buying some
of its own currency, thus thwarting speculators.
The dollar remains larger than all the other currencies
in the top five combined. China’s currency maintains
a distant fifth place as a currency reserve being used
by other nations because of its government’s heavy
involvement in its currency’s value.
One of the TPP trade-offs holding up things is, on
one side, the sticky issue of the high tariff protecting
Japan’s famous short rice produced by the politically
influential rice farmers who use traditional planting
and harvesting methods. On the U.S. side, there’s the
tariff on light trucks--which includes pick-ups, vans and
SUVs—and which serves as a moby-sized speed-bump for
international automakers. . This truck tariff resulted in
many international automakers building plants in the this
country, allowing those companies to circumvent the high
25% barrier to the hefty-sized U.S. light truck market.
Since so many international automakers have now built
factories inside the U.S. this tariff has become less of
an issue, and thus it provides less in value to the U.S.
negotiators in the way of leverage.
In the end, most economists would agree, that the
lowering of trade barriers around the world, and the
increasing dialogue between countries created by such,
will make things safer and better for all on this planet.

Chris Lovvorn, Castle & Cooke vice president for commercial development; Senator Loraine Inouye, chair of the Senate Energy and Transportation Committee; Kahu Kelekona
Bishaw of Kamehameha Schools; Randy Iwase, chair of the Hawai‘i Public Utilities Commission; Alan Oshima, Hawaiian Electric Company president & CEO; Susan Harada,
Dole Plantation manager; Mike Moon, Dole Plantation operations manager; Jim Alberts, Hawaiian Electric senior vice president for customer service.
Hawaiian Electric officially opened its first utility-owned and operated
Fast Charger on O‘ahu at Dole Plantation in Wahiawa.
The Hawaiian Electric Companies believe a major contribution to accelerating the use of electric
vehicles is providing public charging infrastructure to help eliminate “range anxiety.”
Dole Plantation is an ideal charge spot for residents and visitors driving EVs to or from the
North Shore. Drivers can safely operate the charger and pay a small fee by credit card or
smartphone app. Learn more at www.hawaiianelectric.com/goev.
The DC Fast Charger at Dole Plantation has a CHAdeMO connection (used mostly by
Japanese and Korean EVs) and a CCS connection (used by American and European EVs.) This
is the first charger on O‘ahu supporting both types of fast charging.
Maui Electric also has a DC Fast Charger at its Kahului headquarters. Hawai‘i Electric Light is
installing one in Hilo. The Hawai‘i Public Utilities Commission authorized our utilities to install,
own and operate up to 25 fast chargers in our service territory. Additional sites are being
scouted on O‘ahu and other islands. Hawaiian Electric will own, operate and maintain the units
so host locations get the benefits for employees and customers with minimal responsibility. If
interested, reach us at goev@hawaiianelectric.com or 543-goev.

Period of financial crisis
New players have already sprung up to take advantage of these new shopping trends and consumer preferences.
Some of them are providing convenient service locations through stand-lone service outlets, while others are
offering streamlined in-person experiences by getting people to make car and finance-related selections online
before coming into the dealership.
It’s clear that the way consumers are considering, analyzing, and buying cars has changed radically in just a short
time. The question remains how car manufacturers and dealers will further adapt.
A two-lane road to the top
Our study reveals two critical areas where dealers and manufacturers need to focus: operations and marketing
spending.
Lane 1: Optimizing dealer operations
There is a prevailing myth that a dealer’s business success is mostly driven by structural factors, which are not entirely in his or her control, such a scale or location. Our analysis contradicts that myth.
For HADA members, a copy of the McKinsey Report can be obtained by emailing the HADA office at

2015 First Hawaiian International
Auto Show scores high on Motor
Trend benchmarks
With 350 new cars and trucks, extensive show media coverage, a cars & energy exhibit,
contests, Teacher-of-the-Year car exhibit, proclamations, VIP visits, high-density crowds, Pi(e)
Day promotion and the introduction of the hydrogen fuel cell car to Hawaii, the 2015 First
Hawaiian International Auto Show scored high on the benchmark ratings of the nation’s 21
auto show which, including Hawaii’s show, are produced by Motor Trend Auto Shows, Inc.
1) Hawaii’s show had the 2nd lowest ticket price of the 21 shows when
compared against household income.
2) Hawaii’s show had the 3rd lowest features cost of the 21 shows when
compared against gate dollars earned.
3) Hawaii’s show had the 2nd highest number of attendees per 1,000 square feet
of exhibit space per hour of all the 21 shows.

The HawaiiDealer serves as the “textbook” for many HADA
presentations. Here 60 copies of the first quarter edition
was set out in preparation for the HADA presentation to
the auto mavens of the Auto Lunch Bunch—an informal
monthly gathering of car aficionados which meets at the
Waikiki Yacht Club. HADA begins the public relations for
the First Hawaiian International Auto Show each year with
a HADA presentation to the auto mavens.
19
At the recent HADA presentation to the visiting Japan Auto Dealers Association association members, the car section
of the Honolulu Star Advertiser was passed out and reviewed, then used for a demonstration about how fast-growing Eucalyptus trees could provide fuel to produce electric energy that could be used in electric vehicles and also to
produce hydrogen for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. Japan and U.S. auto manufacturers are leaders in EV and
HFCEV manufacturing. Hawaii is at the forefront in the introduction of these renewable fuel vehicles.

In a word, we’re driven.
For decades, Matson has supported Hawaii’s auto
dealers as both a friend and partner. We have more
sailings, more often, to and from Hawaii than any
other carrier. The Hawaii Auto Dealers Association
can rely on Matson to continue its proud tradition of
providing regular, reliable delivery of automobiles and
outstanding service, including up-to-date technology
for vehicle status reporting and tracking. And after 130
years of service to the islands, members can continue
to count on Matson to deliver.
For more information, call our Customer Support Center at (800) 4-MATSON or visit matson.com.
