Shelter Life - Humane Society of Huron Valley
Serving Greater Washtenaw County Published by the Humane Society of Huron Valley 3100 Cherry Hill Road Ann Arbor, Michigan 48105 734-662-5585 www.hshv.org Board of Directors President, Robert Tetens Vice President, Nancy Culotta Treasurer, Mike Walsh Secretary, Diana Kern Del Dunbar Anne Ferris Peter Fink Diane Heidt Mark Heusel Jane Lumm Teresa Welsh Dennis Wojcik Tanya Hilgendorf Executive Director Mary Rupley, DVM Director of Shelter Medicine Jenny Paillon Clinic Manager Shelter Life Summer 2008 An Animal Hero Named Mickie When Mickie Dobrusin was getting ready for her Bat Mitzvah, she wanted her invitations to request donations be made to her two favorite charities ‑ the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) and Operation Smile. Mickie loves animals and she doesn’t think people understand the plight of animals that end up in shelters, so she hoped she could do her part to make a difference. Mickie’s love of animals is apparent as soon as you meet her. When she visited HSHV last month she almost had her father talked into the kitten she is holding in this picture. Mickie already has two cats (Ozzie and Spot) and a yellow lab named Benny who is an alumni of HSHV. Mickie has raised over $3,100 in donations and wants to thank everyone who supports her wish to help homeless animals. Helen DePinto Director of Behavior Programs Jaci Nicols Development Director Deborah Kern Marketing Director Kelly Schwartz Director of Volunteers and Operational Support Julie Curtis Lead Cruelty Investigator The mission of the Humane Society of Huron Valley is to support the loving, responsible care of all animals in our community. HSHV serves all of Washtenaw County, providing: • Shelter and care for stray and unwanted animals • Adoption of companion animals • Full-service veterinary clinic, including low-cost spay and neuter services • 24-hour rescue of injured animals • Cruelty investigations • Microchip ID • Trap, Neuter & Return (TNR) • Owner-requested euthanasia • Harbor program • Community outreach and education • Behavior Helpline Unleash the Possibilities - We Need Your Help Our current shelter, originally built in 1951, is dilapidated and overcrowded, and suffers from inadequate cleaning systems, air quality, and noise control. The dark and dank feel repels potential adopters, and the overall conditions make the work of dedicated volunteers and staff very difficult. With your help, we are determined to build a modern facility - one that will allow HSHV to be a model of best practices in animal sheltering, prevention services, and community support - one that will save more lives and give more animals a second chance at finding loving, lifelong homes. There are many ways you can help: - Donate a dollar a day for one year - Buy a brick on our “Path of Love” in honor or memory of a loved one or pet - Make a donation that can be paid over four years Please go to www.unleashthepossibilities.net to see how you can be a part of this exciting time in the history of the Humane Society of Huron Valley and make a difference for the homeless animals in our community. Well, we’d like to tell you about another Rocky, a spunky one year old Shepherd/Corgi mix. Rocky was picked up as a stray and returned to his owners 5 days later, but it turned out that his owners didn’t really want him back. Within an hour after picking him up, he was discarded and found by the side of the road in medical distress. Rocky was assisted by a kind stranger and brought to HSHV’s Clinic by the Rescue Team where he received extensive treatment for severe head and leg injuries. Determined to give this happy guy another chance, HSHV gave him the care and love he needed. Rocky went to foster care and it wasn’t long until he stood up and walked on his own. Today, Rocky has made a full recovery, aside from a little tilt in his head and quirk in his step, and has been adopted by a loving family. Heat, Cars and Pets Can Be a Dangerous Combination Many dog tails begin to wag when they hear “Wanna go for a car ride?” However, travelling with pets during the summer months can be dangerous because 120 o heatstroke can happen quickly. Common sense tells most people that leaving their pet inside a parked vehicle on a hot, summer day is the 100o wrong thing to do. Still, many people think they can just 90 o run into the store for 15 minutes and everything will be 80 o fine. What most people need to realize is that the inside 70 o temperature can skyrocket after just a few minutes. 60 o Parking in the shade or leaving the windows cracked 50 o does little to alleviate creating a pressure cooker. In 40 o fact, a recent study by Stanford University proved that 30 o cracking a window had an insignificant effect on both the 20 o heating rate of heating and the final temperature after an hour inside the car. For example, on an 85-degree day, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within ten minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature can reach 120 degrees. Pets are in danger of heatstroke when the temperature reaches 110 degrees. On hot and humid days, the temperature in a car parked in direct sunlight can rise more than 30 degrees per minute, and quickly become lethal. “Pets, more so than humans, are susceptible to overheating,” said Mary Rupley, HSHV Veterinarian. “Dogs have sweat glands on their nose and pads of their feet, but these glands are inadequate for cooling during hot summer days. When dogs pant and drink water it helps them cool down, but if they only have overheated air to breathe, they can suffer brain damage and organ damage in as little as 15 minutes.” If you see an animal inside an unattended car during hot weather, try to locate the owner as quickly as possible. If you can’t get immediate help, call the Humane Society of Huron Valley at (734) 662-5585 x 112. New Hours of Operation Saturday, Sunday & Monday Noon to 5:00 pm (adoptions end at 4:30 pm) Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday Noon to 7:00 pm (adoptions end at 6:30 pm) Have Your Heart Set On a Certain Breed? Did you know that HSHV often gets purebred and designer-breed pets? Mutts make exceptional companions and family dogs, but if you have your heart set on a certain breed, you should start by looking at the Humane Society of Huron Valley first! We have many breeds that never appear on PetFinder (the nation’s number one pet search site) because they come in and get adopted by people that visit frequently. In fact, at least 35% of the animals that get adopted here at HSHV never get displayed on any of the pet search web sites. Just think, you might be searching online for a Poodle right now and never know that HSHV has a sweet little Poodle just waiting for you! Just look at a few of the wonderful dogs adopted recently: Toy Poodle Shih Tzu Boxer Labradoodle HUMANE SOCIETY OF HURON VALLEY HSHV in the Community Tough Economic Times Being Felt By Pets Too Mark your calendars and join HSHV for some family fun-filled days this summer. Check our web site for more information at www.hshv.org. This spring, we have seen a sharp increase in the number of people relinquishing their pets to HSHV because they can no longer afford to care for them, or because they have lost their home due to eviction or foreclosure. As hard as it is to make the decision to relinquish your pet, abandonment is never the answer. Take the story of Splash. Splash, a 4-year-old tabby/tiger mix cat, was abandoned when his family moved from their Belleville apartment home. He was left with very little food and no water but managed to survive until a maintenance worker heard a faint meow. What he found was a very scared, dehydrated cat. We hope Splash’s story will have a happy ending but far too many animals are left abandoned or turned out to the streets, where they get sick or injured, or worse. Check out all of the festivities at: www.ypsilantiheritagefestival.com or call (734) 483-6071 for more information. 3 Here are some ideas for help: - There are many rental homes and apartments that accept pets (type in apartments accepting pets in [your city]) into a search engine for results. - Many kennels offer short-term, low-cost boarding opportunities or boarding payment plans. Call local pet boarding businesses and inquire. - Find someone to care for your pet until there is space available in the shelter or look for a rescue group that has immediate openings. As of July 17, 2008, Splash was available for adoption. We do hope he finds a new forever home. Planned Giving: A Meaningful Way to Carry Forward Your Compassion for Animals As a supporter of HSHV, you have demonstrated your belief in and commitment to the loving, responsible care of animals in our community. Have you ever wondered how to continue your commitment into the future? The answer is simple - remember HSHV in your estate plans by leaving a legacy gift and becoming a member of our Guardian Circle. HSHV’s Guardian Circle are individuals that have made planned gifts which will protect future homeless and abused animals. As a member of the Guardian Circle, you will be making a statement about your love and compassion for all animals today, and tomorrow. Because we are a nonprofit organization, your planned gift will most likely qualify for a gift or estate tax deduction, depending on how and when you make the gift. For more information about leaving a gift to HSHV in your will and the Guardian Circle program, please contact the HSHV Development Office for more information at (734) 662-5585 x 125 or e-mail donations@hshv.org. Gifts That Live On Recent Bequests Received These individuals provided for the welfare of animals in need by securing the future of HSHV with their gift. We thank them and their families. HSHV is blessed to have many wonderful volunteers. Without the support and caring of these amazing individuals, we could simply not operate. From dog walkers, to cat cuddlers, to foster parents - our volunteers give their heart and soul to care for the homeless animals in the shelter. Four years ago, Dean Erskine began walking to get exercise but found himself bored walking by himself. Dean remembered hearing that HSHV needed volunteer dog walkers, and since he and his wife, Aunita, only had cats at home, he decided to sign up for a volunteer orientation. Now, Dean not only likes to wear baseball caps, he also wears many hats as a HSHV volunteer! Dean volunteers as a dog walker, a kitten foster parent, a TNR volunteer, and he is often the voice Dean volunteering at the 2008 Walk & Wag. of HSHV. As a longtime radio host, Dean has a very pleasant and professional voice and he has recorded our PSAs and the HSHV message-on-hold for our phone system. “Fostering kittens is my favorite volunteer activity and probably accounts for 75% of my volunteer time,” said Dean. “Since prospective adopters come to my home to meet the kittens I get to be a part of seeing families find a perfect match. I also enjoy working with the other dedicated kitten/cat fosters, Debbie Pear, Patti Maki, Robin Lund, Cori Walker, Shari Wilcox and the rest to help get these kittens into homes. It’s also very rewarding when adopters send me updates and pictures of the kittens they’ve adopted.” Dean’s favorite volunteer moment came last December when a woman saw a picture of one of his foster kittens on Petfinder. The women got in her car and drove to HSHV to find out how to adopt the kitten. Our staff told her that she would need to contact the foster parent, Dean to see the kitten. It just so happened that on that day, Dean was playing Santa Claus for HSHV at the PetSmart “Santa Paws” day and our staff told her how to get to PetSmart. The woman drove all the way to Petsmart, found Dean in the Santa suit and told me him she wanted to adopt his foster kitten named “Squirt.” “I knew anyone who would go that much out of their way for one kitten would provide a great home,” remarked Dean. “She ended up adopting two kittens!” In Dean’s free-time away from HSHV, he enjoys spending time with his wife Aunita and their six cats. Dean is also a big college sports fan, who loves UofM Football and goes to most games. He also enjoys music from the 40’s and watching old Andy Griffith show reruns. “If you love animals, volunteering at HSHV is one of the most rewarding activities you can be involved in,” says Dean. “The teamwork of the staff and volunteers help to make the time homeless animals spend at the shelter less stressful and help them become more adoptable. There are so many different ways to be involved, just about anyone who loves animals can find their niche. Plus you can’t find a nicer group of people to be around than HSHV volunteers.” 5 We Need You! Volunteering at HSHV is a rewarding experience. There are so many roles you can play to aid the mission of the Humane Society of Huron Valley. You must be 18 or older for volunteer positions requiring direct contact with the animals. If you are 16-17 years old, you may volunteer for other activities. If you are 12-15 years old, you may volunteer working directly with a parent. For further information, please call our Volunteer Hotline at 734.662.5585 x 300 or e-mail volunteers@hshv.org Thank You! HSHV would like to thank the Build-ABear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation for awarding our Fairy Godmother Fund a Bearemy’s Kennel Pals® $1,500 grant. Bearemy’s Kennel Pals is a collection of plush dogs that generates funds for the support of pet programs. Build-A-Bear Workshop dpnates one dollar from the sale of each full-sized furry friend to the Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation to support domestic pet programs including local animal shelters, stray pet rescue and rehabilitation organizations, pet education programs, and other direct pet care initiatives. Money raised through the sale of these animals is directly granted to shelters and animal programs in the United States and Canada on a quarterly basis. The Fairy Godmother Fund enables HSHV to go the extra mile for animals that have suffered abuse or neglect and require medical treatment that is beyond the scope of regular adoption procedures. HSHV budgets for these special cases and each year needs approximately $20,000 in order to provide life-saving medical care. Visit www.hshv.org for more information. 6 SHELTER LIFE • SUMMER 2008 Special Gifts The following is a list of gifts made between November 1, 2007 and May 31, 2008 to the Humane Society of Huron Valley in memory and honor of loved family, friends and pets. We changed her name to Athena, and she has fit in since day one. We adore her, as does everyone she comes across. We are still trying to get weight on her, she is eating very well for us. Our baby girl loves the couch, and the bed for that matter. We send a thank you to everyone that helped in her care and gave her so much love and attention until we adopted her. Please continue all of your hard work. You do such a great job, and I hope more wonderful animals like Athena will be able to get adopted to their own homes very soon. Wish List My husband, Jeff and I adopted Purrdie. I had heard about her when she was on 107.1’s “Pet of the Week” show. We had recently lost both of our cats to cancer, and while we knew another cat couldn’t replace the ones we lost, we also had room in our home and lives for a kitty in need. She has the run of all the rooms in the house and is getting along very well with Erin, our dog. She fits into our family as though she’s been with us for a very long time. We decided to rename her Cinder because of the neat white and silver portions of her coat. We are just so glad we found her. Thank you -- and we are particularly thankful to her foster father, Dean. She is a great cat because she had great people watching over her. Please visit www.hshv.org to see items on our WISH LIST. If you don’t see the item you want to donate, please call us at 734.662.5585 x 104 before making a trip to HSHV. Thank you! Our greatest wish it that all homeless animals find a loving, forever home. Please make adoption your first option.
