Women`s Fund of Santa Barbara
Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara www.womensfundsb.org Women’s Fund Highlights • The Women’s Fund has donated more than $3 million to Santa Barbara area non-profits since 2004. • We’ve grown from 67 members in 2004 to more than 500 individual and group members in 2010. • Our expenses never exceed 3% of our donations. In 2010, generous underwriters paid ALL expenses so that every dollar donated is applied to community needs. Thanks to $100,000 remaining from Betty Elings Wells’ 2010 matching grant, every dollar donated in 2011 (above $350,000) will be matched 2-for-1, up to $100,000. Since the Women’s Fund granted a lead gift of $150,000 to the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy (DPEA), this program has received regional and national awards for its robotics competitions. The director, Amir Abo-Shaeer, became the first public school teacher to receive a MacArthur Fellowship. The students in this program (50% are girls) develop analytical and critical thinking skills that benefit them in whatever career or academic path they choose to pursue. What is the Women’s Fund? The Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara is a collective volunteer donor group that enables women to combine their charitable dollars and provide significant grants focused on the critical needs of women, children and families in Santa Barbara, Goleta and Carpinteria. The concept is simple: • Women join as individual members for $2,500 or more a year (or as part of a group totaling $2,500 or more). • We identify researched. critical community issues to be • We research local non-profits addressing selected issues and create a ballot of possible grants for members to consider. The research process includes a thorough review of non-profits’ goals, financials, leadership, sustainability and measurable results. • We vote on how to distribute the collected funds. • We celebrate the announcement of recipients at an awards luncheon in the Spring. • We tour grantee sites in the Fall to learn how Women’s Fund gifts are changing lives. The Women’s Fund is committed to educating and inspiring women to become leaders in philanthropy and demonstrating the impact of collective giving. For more information about the Women’s Fund and how to join, please visit www.womensfundsb.org. Why Join? Why should you join the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara? Because it is: Effective: You will improve the lives of thousands of local women, children and families with larger grants than most of us can afford individually. Efficient: Your tax-deductible membership will be part of a fund where annual expenses do not exceed 3% of funds collected. Thanks to generous underwriters, we had ZERO net expenses in 2010. Easy: All you need to do is join and vote for where the money goes. (No ticket selling, no meetings, no auctions) Educational: You will learn about critical community needs and effective programs transforming innovative ideas into viable solutions. Engaging: You will be among the committed women who vote on where collective funds are donated. The Program of Affordable Transitional Housing and Services (PATHS) of St. Vincent’s of Santa Barbara provides homeless mothers and their children the tools to create new lives for themselves and their children. Grants of $35,000 in 2004 and $75,000 in 2009 help these mothers and children to succeed.
